Russell Kirsch, a computer scientist credited with inventing the pixel and scanning the world's first digital photograph, has died aged 91.

Pixels, the digital dots used to display photos, video and more on phone and computer screens, were not an obvious innovation in 1957, when Kirsch created a small, 2-by-2-inch black-and-white digital image of his son, Walden, as an infant.

That was among the first images ever scanned into a computer, using a device created by his research team at the US National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institutes of Science and Technology).

This work "laid the foundations for satellite imagery, CT scans, virtual reality and Facebook," said a 2010 Science News article about Kirsch.

That first square image, that article said, measured a mere 176 pixels on a side - just shy of 31,000 pixels in total.

Today, the digital camera on the iPhone 11 can capture roughly 12 million pixels per...

Between a River and a Hard Place by El_Chacho

1) SITUATION:
a) Enemy:
A Russian tank regiment is moving southeast. After securing key river crossings on the Muddy River the enemy is looking to secure territory in order to continue their offensive across the Deep River. The Russian tank regiment's immediate objectives appear to be the river crossings at Merkelville North and Merkelville South.

The enemy will likely attempt to outflank friendly positions in and around Merkelville North and Merkelville South by a turning movement using the roads south of the Muddy River and west of the Deep River.

The only enemy formation available for such a turning movement is a tank battalion equipped with T-90s and BMP-3s. Their doctrine dictates the use of reconnaissance assets to find a suitable avenue of approach, but given the need for a quick advance, the enemy may opt for ad-hoc IFV-tank teams for a reconnaisssance in force.

b) Own:
Our battalion continues its preparations to defend Merkelville North and Merkelville South and is now consolidating and reorganizing. The battalion...
