Sure here are a few picks, note I am still thinking if I want to make some further modifications. My map mod changes are subtle, but I do like them.

Given the graphic structure of what seems like a million .bmp files, are you colour filtering these in a batch?
There is a plug-in for GIMP that allows for this.
I like where you're headed, as some of the original colours are a little on the high vibrancy side.
May have a dabble myself, (I did the retro maps for Warplan & Warplan Pacific and a couple of others).

There are 1,395 low level images that have to be modified, plus the Europe, high, and mid level. I am just about done with version 2 of my map mod.
