MP Update

I've got to figure out how to write these things without having to find a picture to go along with it. Thankfully the team has a folder with screenshots, so I have some options.

I was on contract for a while with a crypto firm and they changed direction and ended the contract. So I'm looking for my next gig, but also not wasting any time and going full time on MP while also interviewing. Of course if we sell over 100k copies, then I'll do this full time, but we're pretty far away from that :) No worries, it's always been a labor of love for the team.

I've discovered a few things in the past few years, I'm not a huge fan of the new versions of C++. Maybe if I spent more time using it then things would be different. I've never been one to create template, although I use them all the time. But there is a point where the code is very hard to read and I've always been someone to read the code rather than the docs. I've also spent a few years now learning cloud backend services coding in Go. It's so EASY. After decades of C++, writing micro-services let's you focus so much more on the architecture rather than the code. It's been nice to add a new skill to my portfolio.

Not much of an MP update so far. I have the lobby working. Right now that will be the way, the only way, to launch MP games. I had to take the Steam version and backfit it into our older PowerLobby feature. But it's going well and it connects much better. By doing it this way, the Steam Client acts as the intermediary for MP. Now I am working hard to get the kinks out of the game launch.

I have a couple of routers at home, a vpn as well. Using the lobby connection method works everytime in launching a game between my machines when they are not on the same lan. The host list will pick up the lan games, but when I use the different routers, they can never see each other. But they can create a room and play a game together through there.

I knew there was going to be a way to do this through Steam. It's a big reason we went all in on Steam. When we were with Matrix, they had to run the lobby server. It was a horrible solution, but when power lobbies went down, we did not have any other choice. It was awesome that they did that for us, but I'd rather not be dependent on a publisher for that service. Yes, I know we are now dependent on Steam, but it's different.

Thank you everyone for being patient while we work through these issues. It's this community that convinced us to give it another go and move the games to x64.

I appreciate all the great feedback and we all attempt to answer the questions on the discussion group here and our new discord channel.

MP - Soon!

Thank you for all the support on our boards and on discord. We really appreciate it and even the criticisms have a ton of value for our early access.

I have this standing desk at home, but I also have 5 dogs and 2 cats. So everyday around noon, I look down and all I see is fur as the dogs like to sleep right below me. There's an entire room, a couch, chairs, but they have to be touching my legs. I can't put the desk lower because then I'm running over tails or having my girl Dixie interrupt me to go out every few minutes as she eyeballs a terrorist (in the shape of a Squirrel) running out back. She has somehow learned to put her snout under my mouse hand and continues this until I get up. Amazing her ability to get her way by preventing me from working until I take care of her. I'd admire her effort if she didn't do it so often. Right at my feet is Ejay, our latest re-homing effort. Sounds cute right? He's a Great Pyrenees and even as a puppy he's over 90 pounds. I just have to slowly push him out of the way, nothing wakes him up.

I finally got the MP connection where I've been striving for a while now. The little details matter so much in coding. I just have to clean up the screens and we can get it to our testers. It worked perfectly as I was able to play a game between my two different routers. One is behind a firewall, the other is not. It's the connection I've been striving to beat for a while now. No mapped ports, just Steam running and relaying the packets. Rufus!!! (sorry my daughter has been watching drew barrymore romcoms this week).

We've began beta testing. Found some bugs, fixed them, still testing.

This is how it works:

MP button will bring you right into the lobby screen.
You have to join or create a room in order to see anyone
Who ever created the room is the server
If the creator leaves, next person becomes the owner
Room disappears when everyone leaves

Owner hits the "enter staging room" button
everyone is notified that the server has started
just wait and when it's up you will join the game
once the server starts, the room is locked down (can't join again so don't leave)
once you are connected, you leave the lobby

now you are on the regular MP setup screen and all should work as it has in the past

This is the ONLY way to do MP now. Sorry if you like direct IP, but it really sucks with firewalls. This way will work to allow you to play with ANYONE connected to Steam. It's very cool how easy it is to connect. All packets are routed through the Steam client, so there's no worries.

It's probably buggy, but it does work.

- Updates on graphics of Waterloo AM and Waterloo PM maps

- Fixed unit "flying" over a bridge in the north-east of the Die Huegel map

- New Staging Room layout to better see commander's names

- Fixed Guard/Screen button of Grog Toolbar x64

- Major part of sdk now included in game/sdk folder

Scourge of War - Gettysburg

So we're facing a huge dilemma here. Our goal was to have every game use the same engine, but when we really got down to taking a look at it, we realize that it would take a long long time.

First all of the screens need to be converted to MyGUI, which is a great goal, but a lot of work. That work would add a lot of time to the project and we know for a fact that there are a lot of players that want GB now!

Second is that there have been a ton of changes in the engine, which means that it might not play the same. Syncing the AI will also take time.

The other option is to release it as it's own game, going back on all we've been saying. Bringing the critical updates into the GB engine. The worst thing about that is that the screens only support one language. This can be done over time, but we are trying to figure out the best answer for right now.

64 bit support
Async support
Steam lobby support

That we could deliver a ton faster. The price would be the same, whether as a DLC for our current release or as a new game makes no difference.

not ready yet

From the dev:
I'm still trying to figure this one out, but I just wanted to address the fact that you can see it but there is nothing there yet. This is what we commonly call as 'winging it'. I had to get it up to work with it and test it. So we're working live and we'll let you know when you can post your mods. I think for a long time SOW has been missing a common place for mods. Another great reason to be on Steam. So be excited, as we are, and look forward to a plethora of game play options.

Scourge Of War - Quatre Bras!!!
Thu, 8 August 2024

It's Out

Here is our first DLC for Remastered. It's an old favorite. We want to make sure we're doing this correctly, so hopefully this works smoothly.

Steam page

-10%  £8.50  £7.65
Offer ends 15 August 2024

About This Content
This DLC contains five scenarios covering this battle where the French left wing under Marshal Ney attacked the Allied forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington.

History
The Battle of Quatre Bras was one of a pair of battles fought by Napoleon's Army of the North on June 16, 1815, on second day of the Waterloo Campaign. In order to force apart the two Coalition armies that faced him, on the evening of the previous day Napoleon had divided his army into two wings. The Left Wing, the nearly 28, 000 men of the II Corps and the III Cavalry Corps under the newly-installed Marshal Michel Ney, was intended to push forward quickly past the crossroads at Quatre Bras to block the approach of Wellington's Anglo-Allied army from Brussels to the north. This would enable Napoleon's Right Wing-68,000 soldiers under combined the III, IV, and VI corps and Cavalry Reserve under Marshal Grouchy, with the added weight of the Napoleon's 20,000-man Imperial Guard in reserve-to crush the Prussian army as it approached from the east. Napoleon would then combine his entire army and turn it toward Wellington in front of Brussels.

Ney, however, had failed to push through the Quatre Bras intersection on the evening of June 15, and contented himself with massing his troops on the morning of June 16, squandering hours when he outnumbered the 8,000-man Anglo-Allied contingent more than two to one. Ney's attack did not start forward until 2:00 p.m., and an hour later the 5th British Infantry Division (7,400 men) and the 3rd Dutch Light Cavalry Brigade (1,400 men) arrived to even the odds for Wellington, who arrived in person to take command of the Allies. The 7,900 men of Jerome Bonaparte's 6th French Division arrived next, soon balanced on the Allied side by the appearance of the black-uniformed Brunswick Corps (9,200 men), and fighting became heavy all along the line. At 5:00 p.m., the 7,500 men of the British 3rd Division arrived, and tipped the weight of numbers permanently in favor of Wellington's army.

Ney now sent for the I Corps of d'Erlon, which had marched toward the Battle of Ligny, being fought at the same time by Napoleon's Right Wing a few miles to the east. Before the counter-marching I Corps could arrive, however, the Battle of Quatre Bras ended. Wellington's Anglo-Allied army had lost 4,800 men to Ney's 4,000, but most importantly, Napoleon's Left Wing had been unable to either advance toward Brussels or aid Napoleon's Right Wing in its attempt to crush the Prussians at Ligny. Both Coalition armies had survived the French June 16 attacks, and would combine two days later to put an end to Napoleon's career at Waterloo.

To access the DLC in the game, you go to the Waterloo Battles tabs and it will be to the right of the two Waterloo tabs.

Mods

Finally got the mod upload tool working. We are going to work out the kinks and then we'll put it in the release for everyone to try. Next step is having the game query the mods from the Workshop. They are not put in the mods folder.

So.... If you have a mod, and you upload the mod, and you subscribe to that mod, then you will see it listed twice. Once from the Mod folder and once from Steam Workshop.

This is going to be so cool!!!!!!!!!!

No longer will you have to search around for a mod. No longer will you have to try and find a place to host a mod. You can also vote on them, let the world know the best ones.

As Randy's Mod is probably the most famous one, we let him put his up first. It was messed up, but it's there. I finally got a good one up by posting one of MarkT's maps.

This has been a big hole in the game, where do I post and get mods. Now it's answered and we're all excited to see all the mods in one place.

Looks awesome and I'm glad they're adding steam mods. I wonder if anyone has tried the new multiplayer and if they have had any good games with the remaster?

Thank you for the great engagement of the upgraded games. We we not sure that the community would welcome it, but it's nice to see we were wrong. We've had great engagement and it's good to see these niche games still have a good audience.

There are so many cool features we want to add, but we're always playing catch up. I have way too much on my plate and the team is very small with limited engagement this time around. So we're doing what we can and making sure to be consistent in what we promise. It's confusing as getting GB out early caused no end of questions and confusion. We will do everything we have stated though.

It's a quiet time now on Steam, but starting in Autumn begins a lot of sales and we'll be fully participating. We hope that will expose us to a larger player base. Which in turn we hope will allow more competition in the MP lobbies.

Currently we have the Ligny and Wavre in the Steam review process. It's taking a while due to some confusion on requirements.

Once we get everything caught up we do have a list of new items to add to the game engine that we really feel will add new playability.

Thank you from NorbSoftDev!
