Dev Update 10 Sept 24
Tue, 10 September 2024

MP saves. That's been the bane of my existence (besides trolls) for the past few weeks. Made significant progress yesterday and was able to send the 33MB saved game across the wire during setup.

A long time ago Mitra created a way to do MP saves. It was a hack, but it did work if you set it up correctly. Everyone can thank him that we're even doing this as it was never part of the original plans. I had to ask the rest of the team how it even worked.

He created an ini file that had the name of a saved game. So the scenario loads, everyone picks their officer, then the same saved game is loaded by everyone at startup. The issue is that you have to get the saved game to everyone and they have to have the scenario and setup the ini file correctly.

I've taken that and changed it a little. Now if you save MP games, it creates a saved game in the NetServ folder. That's the folder we use to launch MP. On setup that folder is sent to every player. So we included the saved game (if it exists) as part of that exchange.

My test was that I saved the MP game. The restartMP.sav was created in the NetServ folder. I left the game, copied that folder. I then selected the copy as the scenario for the next game, and it worked!

To those that do not care about the details... MP saved games will be a new folder under the documents/sowx64/scenarios folder. You cannot use the NetServ folder name, as that's the staging area.

As far as the MP error we the 'too much data' etc. errors from the Steam network library. I think we have those beaten as well. Looking at the long initial MP game launch now.

We have a few other improvements coming along nicely. Not sure of an exact date yet, but hopefully soon.

Ligny DLC Is Finally Available
Sat, 14 September 2024

Scourge Of War Waterloo - Ligny is now available.

More famous battles recreated in the SOW engine on remastered maps.

Scenarios covering this battle where the French army under Napoleon attacked the Prussian forces under the command of Field Marshal Blucher.

His Excellency FeldMarschall Blucher promised to engage and hold the French army here for the time necessary. Your corps is in the front line: it is important to hold the line of river Ligne, in order to do this you have to defend the villages and buildings on the left bank of river. The French army must not break our right or we risk to be separated from the Dutch-British Army

That Didn't Work

Gettysburg DLC

The Gettysburg DLC did not go as planned. Our testing, our planning ignored one major area that is a no go. Can Steam support what we are trying to do. It cannot. I'm not blaming it on anyone but me and our team. We should have caught this and known before we released.

Our plan was to put GB as DLC for WL and WL as DLC for GB. So no matter which path you choose, you can get what you want. We tried to be everything to everyone and it failed miserably. Soon after launch players pointed out these issues and research showed that there was no good solution.

In our testing we were just trying to get everything working. We mostly tested the DLC, as the stand alone game would be the same engine. We got everything working at the last hour. But just did not spend enough time integration testing. Even with all that there are still bugs we missed and it sucks. But all we can do is own up to them and fix them. We cannot move forward until we have the solid base.

Two apps cannot share the same workshop, so all mods would have to be copied and supported in two areas. The same issue comes into play in the game lobby. Although there may be a hack for it, it could get shut down in the future. So GB DLC could not MP against GB stand alone and that's not acceptable.

The only solution that solves these issues is to discontinue the GB DLC, give everyone a refund. I've already requested this from Steam and am waiting to hear back. I cannot shut down the store right now or change it.

We apologize that this happened and we are trying to make it right as quickly as possible. Thank you to everyone who jumped on this and found these issues very quickly.

GB DLC

We just heard back from Steam and the GB DLC is no longer able to be purchased. We've addressed the issues and that they cannot be solved. The same content and remastered game is now available through the GB Standalone product. It really is exactly the same which is what caused so many issues. We promised we'd deliver it as a DLC and we promised that we'd deliver it as a standalone. We did, but we did not take into account how well Steam would handle what we were trying to do. Really, why should they? It was my crazy plan.

We will have the stand alone on sale again if you missed the wargamer sale. But the good news is that you should be able to get a refund for the DLC now. So please do as soon as you can.

Now that this is over we are working on moving forward and fixing any remastered issues.

NOTE that both games use the same engine. They will both get the updates. All future plans to expand features will affect both games.

The really cool thing is that you can also download the original 'classic' version if you want.

Thank you for your patience,
(I always laugh at that as I am not patient and when people say that you really did not have much of a choice)

NorbSoftDev GitHub
Sun, May 18, 2025

We've decided that it makes more sense to post our sdk files on github rather than ship with the game.

It's easier to find the files and you can use the source to modify the program to your needs. For the workshop tool there is a ./bin folder that contains the built program.

You do have to have a steam_appid.txt file in order to run the program. That file contains the steam app id of the target file. So for GB, you put in one appid, for WL another. We've also included the two sample files, so it should be pretty easy. It's a very basic program and I think it's based on other examples we've seen.

We also are putting our AI source and our other SDK tools here.

New Release
Mon, May 19, 2025

Since Remastered and GB share the same engine, we posted an update for both tonight. We've been working hard on the GB release and found some issue that could affect both games. We've also worked on some of the sdk tools and other QOL issues.

Scourge of War Engine Update
Fri, 26 September 2025

BUG CORRECTIONS

Bug correction is always on top of our ?to do? list. I?m really proud of the community we have because of its constant suggestions and feedbacks. This helped us a lot in finding bugs which sometimes could be very difficult to find.

The last effort we put in this area is the correction of the bug that make a Multiplayer battle to crash when a player leave the game: this should be fixed now

UI IMPROVEMENTS

A request that has been hanging there for so many years, is the possibility to invert the mouse wheel to zoom in and out in the 3D map. That was actually something you could already do but that means to go in a certain folder in another folder, search for a certain file, add a command line, etc. Now you can go in the Options screen, also in game, and tick the Invert mouse wheel option. Voil?!

OTHER NEW FEATURES

I think that the most exciting improvement here is the improved draw distance for trees, objects, terrain and units. You can tweak and find your sweet spot by playing with the Terrain options in the page 2 of the Options screen.

To improve Multiplayer experience, we added a popup message that inform the host of a game when someone leaves or drops so the host is aware of it and can decide if go on or restart the game.

LEADERBOARD AND ACHIEVEMENTS

And now that you have all this new stuff available, are you ready to launch your troops towards the enemy and dominate the Leaderboard? Show us and to the world who is the Scourge of War Master!

The Field of Waterloo Has Never Looked Better: Major Engine Update October 1!
Sun, September 27, 2026

"Up, Guards, and at 'em!"

On October 1, Scourge of War: Waterloo receives its biggest engine update in years. The update brings higher frame rates, a sharper and richer battlefield, proper ultra-wide support, and near-instant saves. To celebrate, starting October 1, Scourge of War: Waterloo, Scourge of War: Gettysburg and all of their DLC are deeply discounted.

The same day, our Gettysburg players get Scourge of War: Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle of the American Civil War. If you've ever wanted to trade the squares of Mont-Saint-Jean for the sabers of Fleetwood Hill, the discount makes it the perfect time.

What's New in the Engine

This is a free update, and every battle you already own benefits, along with all your favourite mods. Here's everything that's new.

Performance
  • Much higher frame rates in wooded battles. Tree and foliage rendering now uses multiple CPU cores, removing the biggest slowdown in large battles. Our heaviest forest test scenes went from about 18 FPS to about 60 FPS. Battles on open ground run faster too.
  • Saving is now almost instant. The pause when saving a game is gone.
  • Saved games are about half the size. They take less disk space and upload to Steam Cloud faster. Your existing saves still load.

Graphics
  • New optional post-processing. Sharpen the battlefield and adjust colour, contrast, brightness, warmth and a subtle corner vignette, all built into the game with no extra tools. Distant columns look crisper. The HUD, menus and text are never affected, and the performance cost is negligible. Off by default.
  • Ground bump detail. On Shader Model 3.0 graphics cards, fields and pastures can show fine surface relief that catches the sun, so the ground no longer looks flat and painted. Steep slopes stay smooth to avoid streaking. Off by default.
  • Terrain self-shadowing. Ridges and slopes now cast shadows across the ground, adding depth and a real sense of time of day. The shadows are pre-baked for each map, so they cost nothing in frame rate.
  • More natural water. Water now blends with the scene behind it instead of glowing, and the shimmering along shorelines is gone.
  • Trees fade into distance fog. Distant treelines no longer look pasted onto the landscape.
  • Trees now draw at their correct proportions. Some trees used to look stretched or squashed.
  • Less flickering and shimmering of trees and foliage as the camera moves, and no more halo artifacts where trees overlap.
  • Much less flickering at high camera heights. Soldiers, objects and models no longer shimmer and flicker when you view the field from high above.

Displays
  • Ultra-wide support fixed. On screens wider than 16:9 (such as 32:9), soldiers, objects and trees no longer vanish when the camera faces certain directions.
  • Proper ultra-wide framing. Wide screens now show more of the battlefield to the sides instead of squeezing the view. 16:9 and narrower screens are unchanged.
  • New VSync option to remove screen tearing. Off by default.
  • No more windows stuck off screen. If you choose a resolution too large for your monitor, the game now keeps the window on screen or picks the largest resolution that fits. This also works at startup, so a resolution saved from a bigger monitor can't lock you out.

Saves
  • Autosave now keeps ten saves. It used to skip every other slot and kept only six.

For Modders & Map Makers
  • GenerateShadowMap tool. Bake terrain shadows for your own maps from the heightmap, with your choice of sun direction, sun height and shadow darkness.
  • Per-map NearClip setting to fine-tune depth precision on each map.
  • Triple the AI save slots. AI mods now get 30 integer slots per officer instead of 10. They start at zero, are stored in saved games, and existing AI mods work unchanged.
  • More forgiving drills.csv. Cells that contain only spaces or start with spaces no longer corrupt formations.

Full details and all INI settings are in the Engine Release Notes included with the game.

The Emperor Awaits

The Grande Armée is formed up on the ridge at La Belle Alliance, and Wellington's line waits in silence behind the crest. On October 1, the guns open again, better than ever.

With Waterloo, Gettysburg and every DLC deeply discounted, there's no better time to take the field. Update, sharpen your view, and march to the sound of the guns!
