911: a threat to SB-PE and your computer?
« on: February 10, 2018, 09:14:49 PM »
I am writing to warn everyone that there are two computer vulnerabilities discovered within the last 30 days that may affect your computer's speed.

The problems have been named MELTDOWN and SPECTRE. All computers built since 1995, even the new 2018 model computers on the shelf, have the vulnerabilities. Apple admitted the bugs were present in almost all of its products. INTEL is throughout it's line of processors.

The current band-aid fix for this are Microsoft Windows updates that are appreciably slowing down the processing speed of computers with INTEL processor equipped operating systems.

I have one of the worst affected. I have a 6 year old Alienware desktop with a Windows 7 operating system. In the last week, my computer was running slower, the programs seemed more ‘glitchy’, even freezing up. I discovered the info about MELTDOWN and SPECTRE and the crappy fix being sent out by Microsoft. I uninstalled the crap update to put my Windows 7 back to its normal performance. The update file is KB4056894.

All the Windows and MAC operating systems are affected. Word is that Microsoft's current ‘fix’ for the problem has a side effect of slowing down computers from 5% to 30%. If your computer has slowed down at all recently, download and run the IN_SPECTRE.EXE file to see if you have any performance hit from any windows updates since 1-1-2018. Here is the location to get the file,..

Here is an article that points out what update files affect what operating system,..

The thing to keep in mind about the fixes is that the newer your hardware, the less the impact of the fixes on your performance. On hardware from 2017 onward, the fixes that have been released so far (which don't cover every fix that needs to be made) don't have any noticeable impact on gaming: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-performance-meltdown-spectre-intel-amd,5457.html

Hi Rinix,

thanks for your input. I too read that Windows 10 users would experience less of a performance slowdown than Windows 7 and 8 users.

The recently released 'fix' was a half-measure at best. I uninstalled Microsoft's alleged 'fix' because it was slowing my Windows 7 computer and causing glitches (not unlike a computer virus).
My decision was to delete the 'update' and regain computing speed.
