Hi Dogs Of War'ers
Here's what I've been tinkering with. The Steel Beasts Legacy (SB1) Europe.act file. That is a colour palette file which I can edit using a palette editor. So the result is that my Steel Beasts Legacy (2001) game can play with the modified colours. FYI, SB1 doesn't play in Windows 10. I play it inside Virtualbox.
Like so below. These are
actual in-game screenshots. They were not re-adjusted by a colour editor in any way.
What have I achieved from this? Well depending on my mood, or just for the fun of it all, I can change the Europe.act file to a different theme to play SteelBeasts Legacy in a different colour palette. So in effect, I can make a 'new' game, everytime, anytime I want it.
I created 4(!) different versions of the grand-daddy of all Steel Beasts tank sim versions For the "Bleached Bypass" version, I was trying to reproduce the "Saving Private Ryan" colour scheme. This
link shows you how it is done by using Gimp. In the Europe.act colour palette file, there are 16 rows and 16 colouns. 256 colours. Each colour corresponds to a category of the game. Like sand, water, grass, close by bushes, far away trees, etc. So not only do I have to convert the original colours into a new colour scheme, I also have to make sure that the new colours are in their correct categories.
My personal favourite is the half-saturated colours palette. The maximum saturated colours palette is when I am in the 1990s 8-bit Super Mario game mood. The beauty of the SB1 game is that, thanks to its ageless gameplay and sound effects, I can enjoy the game in
any colour scheme I choose. I can switch back to the original (out of the box) green colour scheme, I can still enjoy the game.
If you have a kid son, or 6-year-old kid nephew who is likes wargaming, you can introduce him to Steel Beasts by letting him play Steel Beasts Legacy with the Super Mario High Saturated colour scheme.
If your precious eyes hurt just by looking at this actual in-game screenshot, then you know who to blame."Hey, kiddo! Check out this cool game that runs in kid playground colours.
Except that it's not just a game. It's an accurate simulation of the M1A1 and Leopard tank
with realistic sound and gameplay."
"Kewl! But Uncle, the graphics ... ew...it sux big time!
You expect me to play this? Does it have MP?""Multiplayer? Erm...yes, erm... no not really. You want graphics?
When you get older and start working then you can afford to buy the
Steel Beasts Pro PE Version 20.05 with the photo-realistic dynamic terrain engine...
with your own money. Read my lips. I am not your Automated Teller Machine.
You'll have to go buy your own games then."
"I see. Tanks, but no tanks. I think I'll stick to Battlefield 5" So I like to manipulate colours. I like to make play around with retro games. Retro games are my colour palette. I even have an idea of recolouring SteelBeasts Pro PE itself. From this...
What we're used to now. Straight out of the box, realistic green colours ala Steel Beasts, ala real-life. ...to this:
What say we colourise the game a wee bit eh? Yes, the Steel Beasts game purists will be up in arms. But I am an artist. You may say I am a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
