13 Days card game gets reviewed by Wargamers Needful Things

"I would love to be able to write this review without referring to Twilight Struggle, but as the designers themselves heralded it as Twilight Struggle [hereafter TS] in 45 minutes that's not going to be likely.

There are plenty of other reasons too. Victory determined by who has gained most Prestige at game end, a Defcon track and the possibility of a player losing by triggering nuclear war; playing a hand of cards each turn and each card playable for either its events or placing influence; an abstract board to represent the areas to be influenced. The Cuban Missile Crisis - one card in TS : a whole game in 13 Days. Nuff said - mini-TS or TS-lite? Thankfully, it's better and worse than that................"

A Wargamers Needful Things review S&I plus Campaign expansion by NWS...

"Some people are into heavy metal, meaning armored vehicles. Then a smaller subset is into heavier metal trains. Once more we cut the group down to those who are obsessed with the heaviest metal battleships and battlecruisers. To me, they are elegant and stately in their deadly beauty. It is no wonder that for a hundred years or so the guns and armor of these behemoths were the epitome of weapons, and also a nation's ego. While - at the first sight - this version does not look very different from the 1.4.3, it is a huge leap forward! This is simply the biggest upgrade to date: It took about 8 months of hard work and debugging to perfect a whole new telemetry engine and file format.

Why all this work?

The new telemetry engine is more powerful, transparent and efficient than ever:

  • It can manage any kind of data even unknown one. The owners of the Home and Professional editions can now use the new raw telemetry tool to have a look at all the data recorded for each object of the battlefield. In a future release, new customizable telemetry windows will be introduced, in addition of the raw telemetry tool, to replace the old - and now overloaded - telemetry ones.
  • This new engine also supports real-time data recording... which will soon lead to real-time flight data recording for the devices and simulators which support this kind of feature (like DCS World, FSX, X-Plane...)
  • Thanks to lossless optimizations and improved structures, the new engine requires two times less memory to load the same amount of data as before!
  • Thanks to full 64-bit floating point

About This Content

First days of the German operation "Blau" in the summer of 1942 in the Oskol river area. The Wehrmacht 6 Army dealt a crushing blow at the boundary of the 28 and 21 RKKA Armies, forcing them to retreat in disorder to the Oskol river. To prevent the units of the Wehrmacht 6 Army from reaching the west bank of the river, the RKKA command redeployed the 91 TBde to Verhnyaya Lubyanka - the last point before the crossings near Volokonovka - with the objective to impede the enemy advance, and thus, gain time for the retreat of the battered RKKA units.

• Two operations of 6 turns for each of the parties.
• Precisely recreated area of over 60 sq. km: hilly plains with harsh terrain and extensive gullies.
• Historical organizational structure of units at the time of the offensive.
