Old School Tactical by Flying pig games Review

While I own a fair number of board games, I have never done an unboxing, let alone a review of one. My reviews up until now have been of digital wargames. So in a sense this is like coming home. My purchases of boxed wargames have mostly been of older games with a few newer ones here and there.

I have not really been that much of a fan of tactical games, since in my youth we played a lot of what I call 'squad argument'. I don't remember that much playing, but I do remember a lot of arguing. Give a man with a pocket protector a set of wargame rules, and he turns into an armored warrior on the side of right. I am, however, an equal opportunity gamer. I'll give pretty much any game a try. I will do the unboxing etc. with the game components and also use a very well done vassal port of the game.

Flying Pig Games is the board game company that has brought us Old School tactical. They also publish, among others, 'Night of Man' a tactical futuristic game, and '65' a game about the early battles in Vietnam. Yaah! magazine that is up to issue six now, is also published by them. It contains a game in every issue. They are also doing a kickstarter...

Scourge of War Quatre Bras - Friedrich von Specht's Though Afternoon

Though scenario! It is no joke to patch up the damage that the Duke of Wellington's complete inaction has brought during the crucial hours of June 16th 1815 is no joke. So here I am in the digital version of the saddle of von Specht and his line infantry brigade.

Moving through the town of Quatre Bras, my first Line Battalion on its way to glory or defeat. In the background, soldiers of the 9th Regiment on Foot (9th Infantry Division).

The mission is to delay the enemy until reinforcements arrive.

Jaggers of the Avant Garde are already in position. My objective area is where the star/sun icon is placed.

Moving troops into contact is not a trivial matter. In games like Scourge of War, where each formation has its own computer controlled commander. Proper coordination will demand enough foresight from the player. In this case, my brigade arrives piecemeal. The First Line Battalion is in the background, closely followed by the Second (foreground).

Fortunately, no major damage resulted from my dubious command. One battlion French infantry from the Jamin Brigade was not in better shape and they...

Graviteam Tactics Fall Blau - Second Battle Video AAR

The second battle video AAR is up, fellows. After my enveloping maneuver (which I am not sure it succeeded, look at the last part of the video), the Soviets counter-attacked. First part

With just two platoons of infantry available, I chose a very optimistic deployment -one platoon forward, a second one as a reserve- and waited for the attack. I was not allowed to dig in, I suppose because my troops were just pulled out from the previous dawn attack. But the treeline offered some sort of cover and concealment.

After a good Soviet artillery pounding, the Soviets moved across the open terrain and were stopped, although to many losses in our side.

At a certain point in the battle the terrain surrounding my men's deployment came to life with Soviet infantry trying to flank us. I had to use my second platoon to attack them by fire.

It was a good infantry fight and I can't wait to see how the campaign will unravel. It is still morning and the rest of the day will be very interesting.

Here is the video. Please watch it in YouTube if you want to see it in high resolution.

Cheers,
