The Seven Years War (1756-1763) - Pomeranian War

The Seven Years War continues to be an obscure war gaming delicacy.

The latest DLC from independent developer Oliver Keppelmüller brings Sweden as a playable nation.

After much improvements through patching, this war game brings grognardy bits from Total War, Scourge of War, Europa Universalis into an strategic, operational and tactical war game about the first global conflict. Not an easy task, but the design talents of Mr. Keppelmüller appear to be endless.

The game now has a manual, which helps to understand the economic facet of the game. Managing the economy is actually not that difficult, but it can be left to the AI.

It is rather unfortunate that the game still suffers from interface issues, like the dim highlighting of active buttons, the size of the icons and the non-obvious ways to aggregate the high volume of information coming from your cities.

And -this is just a matter of personal preference- the tactical battlefields are so dark and somber ...

Cheers,

Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe - Review

It's simple but deep. It is a game for the 21st century but designed with solid, good, old principles. Its gameplay flows unrestricted, seamlessly across several strategic aspects but invites and rewards a deep exploration of many factors involved in waging a global scale war. It's hex-based but devoid of many board games' antics.

Fury Software has been around since 2002, pursuing perfection through many iterations of its Strategic Command signature game. This review is for their latest and best, Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe (SCWE from here).

Beef, Stardog and I played a co-op against the AI in Scourge of War Waterloo.

We were allies (red) against the French (blue). Division v Division. HITS.

Beef was "Le Beof.

I took the role as commander. We had quite a distance to travel. We started in the NW corner. Village De Cahalane was the objective in the south approx 4.5Km away.

We travelled in column formation using the roads.

At la Traversee de Martin I decided to split the forces. Stardog followed the road west.

Beef was sent to the east so we could have a 3 pronged attack. At this point we did not know what we faced. I mad my first error here. I sent 50% of my artillery to aid Beef. Then I changed my mind and called them back. I then changed my mind again and sent them to Beefs area. This lost precious time.

Beef got engaged very quickly by seasoned enemy infantry. My plan was to come through the woods and behind the enemy attacking Beef.

My plan did not work. The enemy engaged me as soon as they saw me breaking through the tree line. I suffered terrible losses and my men fell back. They never truly recovered. IMy remaining troops assisted Beef in a desperate battle. A battle we realised could not be won. It did not always feel that...
