Territory Mode - Dev Diary #1
Tue, 19 November 2024

Troopers! Stand by for a briefing about the upcoming Territory Mode!

This brand new game mode will be released early next year as part of a major free update, adding a ton of new content to both the base game and the two currently released DLCs. It is specifically designed to focus on player choices, customization and replayability. It also allows you to use Federation and Arachnid units from the base game and the different DLCs on the all Territory Mode maps.

Want to jump in early and help us develop this new game mode? Then sign up for the closed beta here!

https://www.slitherine.com/beta/starship-troopers-terran-command

New maps & Territory Points

Territory Mode is played on completely new maps, specifically crafted for the new mode. They often provide random starting bases and have unique layouts to offer a lot of variation and different play experiences.

The new core feature of these maps are the ?Territory Points?, which are spread out across the playable area. Capturing these points will increase the amount of resources you gain over time (income).

Resource management & Technologies

Territory Mode revolves around a new resource type. This resource is required to purchase new units, to reinforce squads that have taken casualties and to unlock technologies. These technologies will provide access to new unit types; and upgrades that expand the performance or abilities of your units.

Unlike Supplies and War Support, the new resource will not be refunded when you take casualties. Careful consideration of what to spend it on is vital to defeat the Arachnid threat.

Advanced Arachnid AI

The Arachnids will not surrender their territory without a fight, and Federal scientists have found that the enemy has become a lot smarter: Their strength will grow over time, they will reclaim lost territory points, form powerful attack waves and outflank your defenses. A mix of units and constructable turrets must be deployed to expand and to hold your territory.

In each Territory Mode game you may face a different set of Arachnids threats, offering a wide variety of challenges. The right strategic choices of what units and technologies to employ will ensure that human civilization, not Bug insect, rules the galaxy now and always!

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks and remember you already sign up for the closed beta.

Territory Mode Open Beta starts next week
Wed, 11 December 2024

Fuel the dropships, Troopers - the Territory Mode open beta will start next week!

This beta focuses on the new Territory game mode - and a major update of the Kwalasha campaign, adding many new units and the materiel resource introduced in the Urban Onslaught DLC. This campaign update assures that gameplay remains consistent with the unit changes and additions we are doing for the Territory Mode.

Territory Mode offers a fresh gameplay experience designed specifically for replayability. A variety of exclusive maps has been created exclusively for Territory Mode, where you can choose new battle groups and assemble your forces deploying units from the base game and any DLCs you own. Want to pit the mercenaries from the Raising Hell DLC against the Bugs from Urban Onslaught? Or deploy Mahanagar?s police units on the volcanic planet of Gehenna? Now you can!

In this mode, the Federation and Arachnids battle fiercely over Territory Points: key locations on the map that provide the resources necessary to recruit units, recover from losses, and unlock new technologies.

But that?s not all. The Arachnid AI has been revamped to pose a greater challenge, forcing you to adapt your strategies as you fight to dominate the battlefield. Beware of counterattacks, every decision counts as you claim your territory!

Get ready to playtest new content with the upcoming open beta. In the meantime you still have the chance to sign up for the closed beta and help us improve the content in development.

Over the past few weeks, you've received intel about the developing Territory Mode. Now, we're kicking off the open development process for this new game mode, and we need your feedback to make it the best it can be.

Keep in mind that this first version of the Open Beta is by no means completed. More maps, units, battle groups and DLC support will be added gradually over the next months. This Open Beta also contains a major update of the Kwalasha campaign, adding many new units and the materiel resource first introduced in the Urban Onslaught DLC. These updates ensure gameplay remains consistent with the changes and additions being made for Territory Mode.

Territory Mode is a new game mode specifically designed for replayability. A range of new maps has been created specifically for this game mode, in which Federation and Arachnid forces battle it out over Territory Points. These points reward the player with the necessary resources required to purchase units, replace casualties and invest in new technologies.

Take the following steps to play the Open Beta

    - Right click on ?Starship Troopers: Terran Command? in your Steam Library
    - Click on Properties
    - Click on Betas

Territory Mode - Dev Diary #3
Wed, 19 February 2025

Welcome back, Troopers!

It has been two months since we rolled out the Open Beta for Territory Mode, and over 10,000 of you have already joined the fight. We want to send a big thank-you to everyone who?s been battling the Arachnids and sending us invaluable feedback. Your reports from the frontlines continue to shape and improve Territory Mode.

We?re now focusing on making the mode easier to learn, refining difficulty, and adding more content. Meanwhile, we?re also working behind the scenes on our next DLC - but that?s a story for another day.

A Note from the Engineering Corps: Savegames
We?ve heard your requests, and our engineers have been hard at work behind the scenes to add savegame support for Territory Mode. This upgrade means you?ll be able to save your progress and pick up right where you left off - no more losing hours of hard-fought territory gains because a sneaky Tanker decided to pop out of nowhere! We know you?ll appreciate fewer ?rough moments? on the road to crushing the Arachnids.

Turret Troubles and Triumphs
One of the recent changes in Territory Mode is how turrets now behave when destroyed by Bugs. Rather than exploding into a pile of scrap, they enter a ?disabled mode?. Technicians, Engineers - or the fancy new repair drones, see below - can bring them back online, preserving any precious upgrades you invested in. Additionally, our artist is hard at work on improved visuals for these disabled turrets. You?ll be able to tell at a glance which turrets can be repaired and returned to combat readiness, making it easier than ever to rebuild your defensive line after a crushing Arachnid assault.

New Turret upgrade: Repair Drone
In tandem with the turret visual improvements comes the Repair Drone - a nifty upgrade you can requisition for your Mortar Turret. Once unlocked, this flying friend will buzz around a radius, actively patching up damaged turrets. It?s the perfect backup when the frontlines are swarming and your Combat Engineers are busy clearing out Bug hives.

More to Come
We?ve been flooded (in a good way!) with feedback and player data from your two months in the field, and there?s still more on the horizon. We can?t wait to share future updates, balance tweaks, and brand-new surprises as Territory Mode continues to evolve. Keep those reports coming, Troopers.

Haven?t joined the Open Beta yet? Suit up and help us refine Territory Mode into the best experience it can be. With every Bug squashed, every turret repaired, and every feedback form submitted, you?re helping the Federation stay one step ahead of the Arachnid threat.

Service guarantees citizenship. Now, get back out there and do your part!

Territory Mode - Dev Diary #4
Mon, 24 March 2025

Troopers!

A lot of work is happening behind the scenes to bring major improvements to the upcoming Territory Mode. Today, we?re excited to share a few new teasers with you!

Territory Mode Progression
We're currently focused on refining Territory Mode to enhance gameplay depth and variety. Our key priorities include:
  • Improved onboarding ? Ensuring that mechanics, units, and challenges unique to the new mode are introduced more gradually and intuitively.
  • Greater mission variety ? Developing a system that supports diverse objectives and dynamic narrative events for a more varied experience.
  • New Territory Mode maps ? The base game and all DLCs will receive their own sets of new maps specifically crafted for the new mode, greatly expanding their value and replayability.
New Raising Hell maps
We are currently using the Raising Hell DLC as an example case for these Territory Mode refinements. The screenshots below show a few of the new Territory Mode maps we are adding to this DLC. Each map has been carefully designed to challenge your strategic skills and keep you on your toes against the Arachnid threat.

Chariots Constructing Nests
To wrap up this Dev Diary, here?s a sneak peek at one of the Arachnids' new abilities in Territory Mode:

Chariot Bugs can now spawn from hives and move across the map to build static defenses. After claiming territory, they can construct structures such as Drone Nests, Hornet Nests, and Stinger Lairs. Tread carefully and always watch your perimeter?a small group of unassuming Chariots, left unchecked, can quickly erupt into a swarm of much more dangerous Arachnids!

Stay tuned for more updates!

Dev Diary #5: Territory Mode Battle Groups
Mon, 26 May 2025

Troopers! It?s about time for a big intel drop on the upcoming Territory Mode.

A lot of work is going into the new game mode behind the screens. In today?s Dev Diary we will delve deeper into the concept of Battle Groups, and how these form the core of the Territory Mode experience.

New modes, new menus
The introduction of the new game mode has necessitated a redesign of the main menu. We?ve already highlighted this in a previous Dev Diary, but further changes have been made based on player feedback and new design requirements.

When clicking the ?GO TO WAR!? button, a new screen will require you to select a game mode: Story campaigns, challenge missions or Territory Mode.

Battle Group selection
After entering Territory Mode, next you?ll be presented with the Battle Group selection screen. The base game and each DLC will come with its own Battle Group - each featuring a unique theme and set of exclusive units, mechanics and technologies. In this screen, you can also access a summarized information overview for each of the available Battle Groups.

Battle Group missions & progression
Choose your Battle Group and you?ll enter the ?Mission Selection Screen?. In this screen, missions will be available for you to accept on Kwalasha - the base game?s planet - or any of the planets from the DLCs that you own. This means that, regardless of which Battle Group you have selected, you can fight in any environment and against all Arachnid unit types that the game and DLCs offer. As we continue to release new DLC, this variety will only expand.

Missions not only vary by planet, but also by starting tier, map type, objectives and Arachnid threats you?re expected to encounter.

The first time you start playing with a Battle Group, only a limited set of basic units and technologies will be available during the early missions. As you complete missions, however, you will unlock new unit types, new technologies and more complex, higher tier missions will become available. But beware, new Arachnid types and threats will also activate as you progress with the selected Battle Group.

Once you launch the selected mission, you?ll be taken into battle.

Playing a Mission
A quick summary about Territory Mode gameplay: you capture territory points to acquire resources over time. These can be used to deploy units, call for reinforcements and to acquire new technologies. Technologies provide access to new unit types or apply upgrades that expand the performance or abilities of your units. For more information, see our previously released Dev Diaries.

Each Battle Group has its own set of technologies and unit types. Some of these may be shared with other Battle Groups, but many are exclusive and thus offer unique challenges and gameplay experiences.

The following screenshots show the different content available to the ?Ground Pounders? - available as part of the base game - and the ?Hellraisers? - available with the Raising Hell DLC. Note that this content is still in development and may differ once the Territory Mode is officially released.

The Technologies available during your mission depend on the mission's maximum Battle Tier, and is restricted to the content you have unlocked in the ?Mission Selection Screen?.

If you manage to achieve all primary objectives - or fail a critical objective - the mission will end and you'll be taken back to the Mission Selection Screen. If a victory was achieved, new content may unlock. But regardless of the outcome, new generated missions will become available to choose - so you?ll always have new challenges ready to accept.

That?s all for now on Territory Mode, Trooper. For a final bit of news: Next month we?ll be announcing a new roadmap update - including still unannounced DLC content!

New Roadmap - 3rd Anniversary Update
Mon, 9 June 2025

Troopers!

Next week, the 16h of June, is the third anniversary of Starship Troopers: Terran Command. To celebrate this - and to show you how we remain dedicated to supporting and expanding upon the game - we are sharing the year 4 roadmap today.

Without further ado, check the infographic below! But don?t stop there, as we go into more detail about its content further down in this post.

Campaign Update | Summer 2025

The first free update brings new content and improvements to the base game and both of the existing DLCs. New player units have been added to the Kwalasha campaign - and several are also available in the DLC campaigns. Many Kwalasha missions have also been updated to focus on these new units and to enhance the overall experience.

The Raising Hell DLC will also receive a small amount of new Mercenary unit types, along with significant improvements to its campaign missions. The Urban Onslaught campaign has additionally been updated with several changes to its missions, mostly focused on the new units.

In addition to all of the above, this update includes significant performance improvements, specifically targeting the slowdowns you may have experienced during long play sessions and on larger maps.

All this new content will be available in the Open Beta next month.

Territory Mode | Autumn 2025

If you?ve been following our Dev Diaries, you know we have a new game mode - Territory Mode - in development. It offers unprecedented freedom in unit selection and tactics. Played on new maps crafted specifically for Territory Mode, you?ll battle the Arachnids to capture Territory Points, adding a fresh strategic layer to the game.

The base game and each DLC will get exclusive Territory Mode maps and their own unique Battle Group. Please see our last Dev Diary for full details, but in short: a Battle Group comprises a tailored set of unit types, technologies and gameplay mechanics - several available only to that group.

Choose your Battle Group and challenge the Arachnids across countless generated mission variations!

First ?Battle Group? DLC | End of 2025

At the end of the year, we?ll release a new type of DLC that is focused exclusively on Territory Mode. Fight the Bugs on several new Territory Mode maps set on a brand new planet, with its own unique environment and bringing several new Arachnid unit types. Unlike the currently available DLCs, no story campaign will be included in this DLC. Instead, you?ll gain exclusive access to a uniquely themed Battle Group featuring its own units, technologies and gameplay mechanics.

New ?Story Campaign? DLC | Early 2026

Early next year another big ?story campaign? DLC will drop. Similar in scope to the Raising Hell and Urban Onslaught DLCs, this will feature a brand new story campaign, set on a jungle planet and featuring new characters, new units and new Arachnids.

In addition to the campaign content, the DLC also expands Territory Mode with new maps and its own unique Battle Group - featuring the units available in the campaign, as well as new technologies and gameplay mechanics.

We hope you?re as excited as we are, Troopers - your war against the Bugs is only just getting started!

Updated Campaign: Releasing the Beta
Tue, 15 July 2025

Content Update Beta begins today!

Attention Troopers!

Another major free content update is now LIVE on the Open Beta branch! This update brings new units, mission improvements, and performance improvements to the base game and both DLCs.

Note that all Territory Mode content has been disabled in this beta update, but expect another major update for this upcoming new game mode soon. Please see the bottom of this post if you want to access the old Territory Mode beta on a separate Steam branch.

Base game: New units & improvements
The Kwalasha campaign adds new units with unique roles. The M4A Grinder is a light weapons platform capable of delivering rapid fire. Two new bipeds - the M9A Sledgehammer, which carries a heavy mortar for long-range support, and the M6A Jaeger with its heavy anti-armor gun and spotter drone - provide new mobile firepower. And finally, the Fortis E-Pulse Troopers wear heavy armor suits for a strong frontline defense.

Raising Hell DLC: New units & improvements
New mercenary units and mission updates add versatile support to the field. The Drilling Biped is a rugged vehicle that repairs machines, builds defenses, and holds its own in close combat. The Hunter-Killer Merc is quite the opposite: delivering precise long-range strikes, aided by a companion drone for spotting and close support. Lastly, the Merc Squad has also been upgraded with varied weapons for greater adaptability.

Urban Onslaught DLC: Improvements
Missions have been updated to feature the new units and the A-12 Pegasus gunship can now unleash relentless rocket barrages on designated areas on the ground.

Many missions have been rebalanced or updated, integrating these new units in their respective campaigns. We recommend you start a new playthrough to get the best experience!

Performance improvements
Significant optimizations alleviate the slowdown experienced during long play sessions and on larger maps, ensuring smoother gameplay across the board. However, this is still in Beta, and we are working on more improvements.

Note to our Map Makers
This update includes significant balance changes! If you're creating or maintaining custom maps, be sure to playtest your maps to ensure everything still plays as intended.

We?ve also added a few new decorations?and we can?t wait to see how you?ll use them in your creative community maps!
