The VBS3 NATO initiative allows NATO member and partner nations access to up to 50 VBS3 licenses in order to prepare for or participate in NATO exercises. During the past 12 months, 11 member nations have used the VBS3 NATO licenses for a range of activities.

As lead nation for the program, the UK Joint Forces Command have organized two events. The first was a face-to-face workshop held at the UK Defence Simulation Centre at Boscombe Down where national representatives worked with staff from the UK Defence Academy to create and execute a number of missions in VBS3.

The second event was a distributed exercise where member nations collaborated to run a number of scenarios using VBS3 from their home nations linked together over the internet.

The VBS3 NATO program has been well received by those nations that have participated as it removes the necessity for investment in the software in order to participate in short duration exercises. The community that has built up around VBS3 NATO also allows member nation staff to exchange expertise and knowledge relating to VBS3.

“The VBS 3 NATO program has enabled NATO to further develop its use and understanding of modern immersive technology to enable preparation for its forces for deployment,” said Paul Thurkettle, NATO e-Learning Programme Manager. “By creating this license opportunity, we are enabling nations and NATO to work together to develop solutions which are interoperable, share common requirements and challenges and most importantly to encourage shared experimentation and assets. As Bohemia Products are used by many of our NATO nations and partners, it is the best choice for our development at this time.”
