FlyInside Flight Simulator Update 0.5 Released
12 JANUARY   - DAN CHURCH

Today we launched FlyInside Flight Simulator 0.5.0.0! This is a significant upgrade which includes a total overhaul on VR controller support, a new helicopter flight model, and a more solid world.

First off, we've completely overhauled our VR interaction system. Whether you're using Oculus Touch, HTC Vive wands, or Windows Mixed reality controllers, you'll want to try out your VR controllers. Nearly every switch in every cockpit can be manipulated using your controllers. The new system makes it easy to grab the lever or switch you want without accidentally bumping others. Improved haptics mean you can feel when you come into contact with a lever, and you'll know when you pass every transition in a tiny three-way switch. A new virtual yoke system makes it just as easy to fly an airplane with a VR controller as it was with a physical joystick, and you can fly helicopters this way too. User interface interaction has been revamped too; you can interact with windows and menus using a laser-dot system. Finally, we've also fixed quite a few minor bugs and annoyances with VR controllers.

FIFS 0.5.0.0 adds a brand new helicopter flight model. The helicopters feel alive, thanks to transverse flow, ground effect, ETL, and a number of other aerodynamic effects. You can practice auto-rotations and engine-outs. If you're not careful you'll even end up experiencing Vortex Ring State. Maybe you can practice breaking out with the Vuichard Recovery Technique? We've worked with a number of pilots and enthusiasts to tune our flight model in, but this is just the start. You can expect further refinements and improvements to flight accuracy over the next few months.

Along with improved helicopters comes a more solid world. Trees and houses are dangerous, you don't want to crash into them! For a real challenge, you can now land your helicopter on skyscraper heli-pads.

FlyInside Flight Simulator - Beta Branch Available
1 FEB @ 6:46PM - DAN CHURCH

We've been hard at work since the last update, but due to some bugs and untested features, we aren't quite ready to publish this as a full update. For anyone interested, we have added a public "Beta" branch to FlyInside Flight Simulator. You can check out our latest changes and improvements, but you may find some new bugs too ;)

How to opt in:
1. Open Steam
2. Go to the "Library" section
3. Right click on "FlyInside Flight Simulator"
4. Select Properties
5. Go to the "betas" tab
6. From the "Select the beta you would like to opt into:" dropdown select "beta"
7. Let Steam do its update thing!

Next time you run the sim, go to "Help -> About." If the version is 0.5.3.0 it worked, if it is 0.5.0.0 you're on the last "stable" release.

What's new since 0.5.0.0?
•   Adds night-lighting to all aircraft
•   Positional yoke now supports all settings/features that rotational yoke does (under Settings -> VR)
•   Default is now hold-trigger-to-hold-yoke, as we found "Tap on" / "Tap off" could be a little confusing for new users. Still easy to turn on from Settings -> VR :)
•   Some performance improvements
•   Some improvements to stutter during scenery loading
•   Fixes memory leak which occurs after opening moving map
•   Fixes CPU usage bug which occurred after opening and closing moving map
•   Fixes crashes caused by corrupt texture files
•   Yoke/collective are now grabbable via "Tap on" / "tap off". Hold your controller close to the yoke, press and release the trigger once. The yoke will stay highlighted and you can control it. Press and release trigger a second time to let go! You can change this to the hold behavior from "Settings -> VR" and unchecking "Use Tap-On/Tap-Off Yoke Hold"
•   You can now grab the yoke using a "grip" gesture. On Vive controllers press one of the grip buttons, on Oculus Touch squeeze both the trigger button and the grip button below it simultaneously. This will hold the yoke from the palm of the hand rather than the finger-tip.
•   Fixes MD530F collective grabbability
•   Adds a setting to turn off rudder control from vr yoke/collective grab. Settings -> VR -> VR Yoke Controls Rudder
•   Adds a setting to leave the yoke where it is when you let go, rather than snapping back to center (Settings ->VR -> Retain VR Yoke Position)
•   Adds sensitivity sliders for yoke control to Settings -> VR.
•   Hands are no longer blindingly bright at night
•   Tooltips/interaction bubble are now visible at night
•   Propeller and mixture levers now "multi-grabbable"
•   File -> Record Video now records to MP4, and you can include audio or menus to your videos
•   Engine sounds now go away when engines are shut off
•   Fixed friction bug, helicopters can now get "light on their skids"
•   Fixes turn-coordinator ball bug
•   Improves 717 VR interaction and switch coverage
•   Adds UDP socket capabilities to scripting. Contact me if you're interested
•   Fixes B55 Fuel Flow gauge
•   Adds SDK APIs to parse XML from strings, create strings from XML

If you try it out, please post your feedback on the discussion forums!

Thank You,
The FlyInside Team

FlyInside Flight Simulator 0.5.4.0 Patch Notes
22 FEB - DAN CHURCH

•   Adds "Intro to Flight" scenario
•   Adds 737 startup checklist. Look for white spinning arrows on the ceiling to find the first switch. White spinning arrows mean you need to set the switch (per the checklist), a green circle means the switch is already in the correct position
•   Adds internal cockpit night-lighting to all aircraft
•   Adds VR keyboard which appears when you tap into a textbox in VR
•   Greatly improves simulator startup speed
•   Video recording now records to MP4, and you can include audio or menus
•   Positional yoke now supports all settings/features that rotational yoke does (under Settings -> VR)
•   Some performance improvements
•   Some improvements to stutter during scenery loading
•   Fixes memory leak which occurs after opening moving map
•   Fixes CPU usage bug which occurred after opening and closing moving map
•   Fixes crashes caused by corrupt texture files
•   Fixes B55 Fuel Flow gauge
•   Adds SDK APIs to parse XML from strings, create strings from XML
•   Adds newer less obnoxious waypoint model
•   Adds wind sound, several sound fixes
•   Fixes several issues with loading stutter
•   Improves speed of terrain loading. Not done yet, but it's harder to outpace the terrain loader when flying fast
•   Fixed several aircraft systems bugs
•   Sim no longer hangs when audio devices are unplugged
•   Helicopters are now properly affected by wind/gusts
•   Several fixes to Steam installation process
•   Adds option so you can choose whether yoke is "hold to grab" or "tap to grab"
•   Adds UDP socket capabilities to scripting.
•   Yoke/collective are now grabbed via "tap on" / "tap off". Click the trigger once to grab it, then click the trigger again to let go. No need to hold it down constently.
•   You can now grab yoke using "grip" buttons on Vive/Touch controllers, which grabs from palm/fist rather than finger-tip
•   Adds setting to disable VR rudder control when grabbing yoke/collective
•   Adds setting to leave yoke where it is when you let go of it with VR controller
•   Adds sensitivity sliders for VR yoke/collective. I find that the helicopters are super flyable using only VR controllers if you turn down sensitivity a little
•   Tooltips/hands now appear at night, but not blindingly bright
•   Ground friction is now proportional to "weight on ground". You can get light on your skids in a helicopter and you won't be stuck in place
•   Propeller and mixture levers now function as multi-grab
•   Piston engine sounds now turn off when engine turns off
•   Fixes turn-coordinator ball bug
•   Improves 717 interaction
•   Adds heading to location dialog
•   Adds units/descriptions to helicopter flight dynamics tables

FlyInside Flight Simulator 0.5.4 Released!
22 FEB - DAN CHURCH

We've just released FlyInside Flight Simulator 0.5.4.0. This update includes loads of fixes and improvements, along with a couple of big new features!

This update includes the beginning of our flight school, which will include a series of tutorials and challenges. Two missions are currently included. Intro to Flight will teach you basic aircraft controls and instruments, and guide you through a take-off and landing. The second tutorial is an interactive 737 startup procedure. You'll flip tons of switches and start a 737 from cold and dark! The second tutorial is still a work in progress, we're going to add voice-overs and explanations so you know what you're doing, and why. You can expect more scenarios soon, now that we have an efficient process for creating them.

In addition to the flight lessons, we've added several major usability improvements. You can now configure VR touch controllers to your liking from "Settings -> VR". This includes how sensitive the "virtual yoke" is and how it responds to motion, and whether you hold down your trigger, or simply tap-on/tap-off for yoke grab. All aircraft cockpits now support beautiful internal night-lighting, so you can read the gauges when it's dark out. Finally, the built-in video recorder has been upgraded to output MP4, making it a lot more user friendly.

In addition, there are quite a few minor bug-fixes, performance improvements, aircraft fixes, and loading speed improvements. We hope you enjoy this new build, and as always, look forward to your feedback!

Thank You,

The FlyInside Team

FlyInside Flight Simulator 0.6.0.0 Released!
27 JUL @ 12:30AM   - MALCOLM

We are excited to announce a major new update for FlyInside Flight Simulator! We’ve added a worldwide scenery streaming system, new scenarios, helicopter flight model enhancements, and plenty of bug fixes and performance improvements.

The most striking difference you'll notice is brand-new, high-detail scenery. Our new scenery system is a complete overhaul of our old one -- we now use Bing Maps to stream imagery directly into the simulator, with a resolution of 1 ft/pixel. You will now be able to fly around the whole world instead of being limited to the US, and you will see detailed photoscenery instead of generic neighborhoods. Because we use a streaming system, you won’t need to worry about a huge download. The system requires an active internet connection, but just 2 mb/s should be fast enough for a smooth experience. If you have no internet connection, the simulator will use the old scenery system instead.

In addition to the scenery overhaul, we have implemented all sorts of bug fixes, usability enhancements, and stability improvements. Despite looking better than ever, the simulator runs just as smoothly as before. Be sure to try out the improved helicopter flight models in the B407 and MD500, and learn to fly the T-38 with our new tutorial, featuring some cool flight maneuvers.

Thanks,
The FlyInside Team
