Basic Survivability as a TC
« on: September 04, 2016, 05:34:48 PM »
I am currently trialling SB Pro (thanks Asid!), and I have progressed to the TC tutorials (Leo 2A5) and have an issue.

I die.  All the time.  Especially in the artillery and multiple unit tutorials, and don't even get me started on the Instant Action scenario.

I realize that these scenarios have both a spotting and firepower disparity.  This leads me to try shoot and scoot and keyholing (and scoot) tactics.  But I still get kicked badly.  It seems that the AIs ability to spot is vastly superior to mine.

So the question is, how do I improve my spotting ability?  I know I have some issues with aligning the TC view when switching between views while the tank is on the move; in the interval where I figure out where I am looking in relation to where I need to be looking, I frequently eat APFSDS-T.  It's possible I need to adjust my mouse sensitivity down a bit.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Hi Christian

In game. Go into the 3D view. Click your mouse and your cross-hairs change to a mouse pointer. Go to the top left corner and a menu appears. Select  "System > Show mouse vector". This will help you to gain mouse control.

Pop onto TeamSpeak anytime and we can help you quickly.

I am sure others will post a reply here to.

Well one thing you could do would be to set your difficulty and realism settings on low.  It would make it easier for you to start Steelbeast with.

Other thing would be to go on shooting range and get score over 90%   this is usually most easy to get on something like M113    (kind of cheating.)

Instant action mission is very difficult for even the pros. If you can get 10 targets killed you are very good player. - It is not meant to be survivable.

And if you are a TC... you might want to keep gun pointing the direction where youre looking at most often. Basicly overriding gunner when not allowing him to engage.

Also study the intelligence reports. Try to look locations from possible enemy perspective. Prepare to be surprised. expect unexpected.

When you study the maps from enemy point of view... sooner or later it becomes easy to start thinking where actual enemy would come. :)

And play with us. :)  We have a few very experienced players, who can teach you a lot. My initial survivability was also very low. With SB you learn that tank is a very powerful weapon but very vulnerable at the same time, if not used properly.

Also leopards will elevate gun up while reloading... exposing a weak spot. So would be best to reverse to cover after each shot. :)

Thanks guys.

90% is where I am at right now, done with the L2A4.  I noticed that my gunner often hits first, but that the T-80s are pretty hard to kill.  If I stick around chasing the kill, by the time I kill one (after 2-3 shots, mostly accurate), I am taking accurate and damaging return fire.  But I can only shoot-scoot so much, and I have the problem that I have to reacquire every time.  And it seems that once alerted, the enemy is very good at engaging me when I pop up.

I need to work on keeping oriented to the ground, and realizing that the TC Peri points to the same bearing consistently, independent of turret movement.

How do I get the gunner to go "weapons free"?  Currently if he says "on" when I don't see anything I give a fire order authorizing him to engage.  But is there any way to get him to freely engage by target priority, while still retaining the freedom to override if I see something more pressing?

Just make sure you have "fire at will" = F key, and then keep hitting space bar :D    it will tell gunner "fire" "Fire" "fire"

also T-80 doesn't have thermal so once you start engaging, after your first short. deploy smoke screen in front of you. - Human gunner can work on with last lase without re-lazing. / AI gunner will manage well enough with or without smoke. :)

Also..  hitting target where it hurts..  is at lower hull. / however AI will engage center mass...  so that's why you might want to try being gunner instead. Aim at the center hull of target and usually eastern tanks will send turret sky high.   T80- turret is very well armored. Especially agaisnt HEAT war heads so you want to use SABOT instead :)

I die.  All the time.

That is accurately modeled in SB.

Back when I was in the Army the Soviet Union pouring through the Fulda Gap was the main concern. in our M60a3's we were told that in that sort of full blown conflict the life span of our tanks was 12 seconds. 3 seconds for the TC.

To say alive stay buttoned up when practicable. Obviously you need to be able to look around but as in all things on the battlefield its a matter of risk management. 1st sound of anything offensive & if not button up at least drop lower in the TC cupola.

that's is more than antitank infantry. We were given just up to 6 seconds o.O     the time that turret takes to turn to face us and shoot.

Try to orient your fourth to where the enemy is so when you go back to reacquire, you should only have to look in a small area. Example is pull back, move left, turn right so front is pointing in correct direction. Pull up. Scan as you pull up, and for on target.

The best thing you can do is upload your AARs so we can see if you are doing something wrong (or not!)
