Greetings gents,
I was not sure whether to post this here or in the Mission/AAR board but assume that board is meant for actual DoW missions which this isn't *yet*.
I have an idea for an open ended campaign that I have already begun work on. As I get deeper into it I will no doubt have questions for experienced mission creators about some of the minutia in the mission editor but for now I have some questions about group preferences.
I wonder how far do y'all feel is an acceptable distance for movement to contact? Im not thinking long road marches but so far most of the missions I have been involved in contact is made pretty quick. Im thinking a couple clicks away for room to maneuver.
How many people should the mission be made to accommodate?
Most missions will be mixed tanks & IFV's but would like to do a couple where its strictly IFV's & PC's. Would there be any resistance to that?
Finally to ratchet up the pucker factor how would y'all feel for some of the missions be where you are in command of a single vehicle instead of a platoon?
I am sure some if not all of these things have been discussed in the past so please forgive me if I am rehashing old news.
Hi Longknife. It's great to hear that you are into mission making. I will do my best to provide you what ever information you need.
So to answer your questions.
I was not sure whether to post this here or in the Mission/AAR board - This topic here is just fine. If you want I can move this to Mission Design.
I wonder how far do y'all feel is an acceptable distance for movement to contact? - Truly it can change a whole lot, depending of who makes mission. Normally at large missions enemy is about 4-7 klicks away that there is no direct visual contact. Especially on open maps. Though some recon forces can be spot as early as click or two. - Usually its better to have some distance that AI controlled friendly units, especially on open maps do not start shooting right away.
There has been nerve breaking missions that have been nearly entirely without enemies. Then again some missions have more than enough of them. Like last Saturdays one.
How many people should the mission be made to accommodate? - Hmm it depends of two factors. How many units players will control? If they have platoon, then there is lot of flexibility and mission can and should rather have less than too much. However we do not recommend this anymore. Instead we have clear preference to 1 unit per player (+1 as reserve if necessary). Then again if its Multi-crew mission is less flexible and should have more units rather than too few. Usual number for players for our weekends missions would be around 7 / +15. For Wednesday it can go sky high, or be as low as just 4.
I would say that prefer mission minimun 7 and max 21 people.
Most missions will be mixed tanks & IFV's but would like to do a couple where its strictly IFV's & PC's. Would there be any resistance to that? - We have done many missions with or entirely without tanks. These are usually very different and many have enjoyed them. - Though in general there is resistance to these kind of missions, because some people simply prefer Tanks, and or specific nations vehicles. Yet I think you still should go for what ever idea you have, you cannot please everyone.
how would y'all feel for some of the missions be where you are in command of a single vehicle instead of a platoon? That would be great! It's is our current aim to do so. Also. I personally am trying to introduce multi-crew missions when ever possible. But not everyone likes those. So don't worry. Go for it!
I am sure some if not all of these things have been discussed in the past so please forgive me if I am rehashing old news. Yes these are more or less constant topic. It's hard to please everyone, but we have quite good group here, and we are very flexible! Its been proven again and again.
If you need any help with your project let us know and we will make sure you will get what you need to make a great missions.
