It's possible to split a brigade in half (infantry, cavalry and artillery) and have them rejoin and recombine as player want. To do this, you have to open the Console by pressing the appropriate key (in my keyboard it's the key on the right of key "L"; you'll notice a small "-" in the upper left corner of the screen.
Once that appears, you can digit commands:

splitbrig then press ENTER
This will split the selected brigade in half (if you have 5 elements in that unit, the brigade will be splitted in 3 and 2 elements per brigade), creating a new officer for the newly created brigade (this is a very poor officer, keep in mind)

joinbrig then press ENTER
Select a brigade and type this command, the mouse pointer will display a "plus" on it and if you click on the flag of another brigade commander in your division, the units composing the former brigade will be merged with the latter; the officer of the first brigade will disappear so always merge a bad commander with a good commander, otherwise you'll lose the good one for the rest of the battle
