How to view kml tracks from Fly Is Fun on Tackview

Hi Lonelyman,

The KML format is not particularly appropriate to store telemetry data. Only some of KML files can be used for debriefing in Tacview.

It is possible that Fly is Fun is creating only graphical KML files: which draw things on screen. The problem which these, is that there is no information about the plane position / rotation / time.

Is there any other format supported by Fly is Fun? Maybe GPX or CSV?

Can you share one of these KML file? I will have a look at them to see if we can extract something from them.

It looks like that these gpx files are properly supported by Tacview.

As soon as you have loaded your data, you can use the “Edit Selected Object…” menu option to change the object type to something like “Fixed Wing Aircraft” and its name to the appropriate designation for your plane like DA40 or C172 for example.

Now you should see the proper 3D model as well as the trail displaying the 3D view.

The only thing missing are the roll/picth/yaw. If they are recorded by Fly is Fun, maybe there is another format you can output from it which will expose that information for Tacview.

Should I purchase a license to see it?
 Because when I try to load the track i get the error mnessage, telling me that this format is not supported by tackview

Oh! Yes, sorry I didn’t think about that.

Indeed, past the trial period of 21-days, you will need Tacview Standard or Advanced to open the GPX files. If this is the case, you should see a “Register your copy of Tacview” whenever you attempt to open such kind of file.

roll pitch and yaw is not registered in gpx tracks.


May you suggest the cheapest (reasonable quality-price GPS tracker, which record roll pitch, yaw and G-forces maybe?

For GPS that records roll-pitch-yaw, I know of Stratus 2S and iLevil Sport. But they are not cheap. Maybe you can use your phone, if you can find the right app.

App developers supporting Stratus 3 through the GDL-90 protocol: and there is not Tackview in their list.

Did you have an experience to  import tracklogs from Stratus to Tackview.
How difficult is it?
Especially to adapt their .csv file to Tackview.
Or kml  tracklog is enough to see  pitch, roll and yaw?

Based on examples that have been shared with us, Tacview currently supports Stratus 2 KML files (but not CSV), and roll-pitch-yaw is included in Stratus 2 KML files.

I believe that Stratus 3 would probably be the same deal but we haven't tried it because we didn't get our hands on any sample data yet.

GDL-90 is not supported in Tacview 1 but probably will be in Tacview 2.

Like they are telling, "The example I sent is for ForeFlight EFB. Other EFBs can handle it differently. I would recommend talking with them to see what EFB they are going to use and then contacting the EFB manufacturer for details / questions. We only make the hardware and do not do anything on the software side.

I would ask Tackview what they support and what file formats. You would import the TrackLogs in one of the exported formats to view it.

You must have some type of EFB app to get the tracklog data off the Stratus portable"


Take a look at kml file, I see that the plane is flying with 12degrees left bank, but the heading do not change- strange.

Also, the speed in a certain period of flight is changing rapidly.

What do you think?
