Monitor advice

Hey guys,

My old eyes are feeling the need for a larger monitor. I currently use a dell 36" monitor but its probably 7-8yrs old, a certifiably antique in computer circles. Anyway I am thinking like 45-50" wide monitor. I hear the curved screen is all the rage now but have also heard there is a fair bit of distortion at the edges.

I wont say price isnt an option but dont feel the need to piss money away. I am looking for a quality monitor that is also a good value.

Any of y'all keep up on this stuff & can give me some recomendations? I really would prefer to not spend hours researching them.

Hi Longknife

Cougar did a lot of research recently when he purchased a new monitor. He can also tell you about a curved screen.

Wilso uses a large LCD TV. He seems to have no problems and likes it.

You will have to look at a few things. Kind of games you want peak performance on, refresh rate, aspect ratio of monitor/games/graphics card, of you want gsync or other support,and if you go with a curved monitor the account of distortion. If we are able to get on TS at the same time, I would be more than willing if time permits to help search/research with you.

Take into account the pixel density and the distance you will watch from... Big screen equals high pixel density is pointless as you cant see the edges sharp...

Hey Don, it will be relatively close. 4-5ft probably. In the near future I will be making a new PC cockpit & thats about the distance I want the monitor.

Longknife, in picking a new monitor, you should probably stick with 1080p resolution, unless you want to upgrade your PC to handle 4K.

I was wondering how well my current rig would handle a 4k monitor. Its a year old but still "up there" specs wise. Its a i7 4.4ghz with 32mb ram & 8gb vid ram. OS is run on a 500gb SSD drive but most of my games reside on a 2TB HD.

I was thinking about just buying a TV since the prices are so attractive but hear all this stuff about refresh rates etc. I take it yours works well?

I am gauging what I need by my highest demanding game which is DCS. If the monitor displays DCS well then its good enough for me.
