The objective was to defend the town of Brye, NW of Ligny. The French took a fancy to it.

View  looking SW. The idea was to use the river as barrier to fall behind.

Biondo was sent to the NW of the objective. He had plenty of room to manoeuvre. I kept my cavalry to protect the artillery.

I kept the cavalry back but in the open behind the artillery. The artillery was lined up. Ready for the French!

The enemy had split. They had sent a force to attack us from the west. They did not know that Biondo was waiting. My cavalry was eager...They would come into play.

The enemy in the west found that that direction was blocked. Biondo moved in to engage. To the SE of the objective I started to manoeuvre my cavalry. I wanted to implement the next part of my plan. The enemy had pushed hard in the centre. The trees provided cover for our infantry. My cavalry arrived behind the enemy. I wanted to harass the enemies rear. Keep their cavalry busy.

My infantry in the tree line.

They formed square because of the cavalry charges. They held for a long time!

The cavalry was pulled back. They were ready. The artillery was organising to engage the French when they came through the trees!I joined the push against the French in the west.

My move to attract the enemy cavalry attention worked. Maybe a little to well. I decided to pull back what remained of my cavalry. The enemy started to take the woods to the south of the objective. I ordered the troops to fall back into the objective.

How it ended

Looking west. The French are to our left and in front.

The stats say it was a marginal Allied victory. This is because we held the objective. The timer ran out when the battle started to get really bloody. Yes we withdrew north into the objective. It was a good decision. So we thought. We still had reserves. they were fresh. Who knows what would have happened had the battle continued. The French also had more artillery and cavalry. They did not use their artillery to their best advantage. I should have made better use of the ground to the south of the objective and made the enemy engage me earlier then fallen back closer to the tree line. The French played well.

A good battle!

My orders were to stay NW of the obj and repel French attack.

When first I saw the Old Guard coming from west but with no cavalry in their support I thought I could stop them because I had cavalry to force them in square.

So first I committed my netherland division to face the French. The Brunswick division was held in reserve waiting to understand where it could be useful.

The battle seems proceed well (I didn't saw nothing about Asid manoever near Brye) but at a certain point I saw French Dragoons moving from SW towards my position.

I decided to fallback, also because I lost a couple of squadrons in a thoughtless charge (my mistake).  :(

Now also my men were forced in squares receiving canister fire from enemy guns wich were just placed in the right position.

I was committing the second netherlands brigade to replace the first when the battle finished.

I still had all my fresh Brunswick division ready to fight but I had no more cavalry. And a French division was moving out of the wood threatening my left.

I don't know what could be the outcome if the battle continued.
