Gettysburg
« on: November 30, 2016, 01:23:03 PM »
Anyone playing SOW Gettysburg?

I really like the gameplay of Waterloo but the names & places are so foreign to me that its kinda overwhelming. I realize that is all superfluous & the names really dont matter but I am looking for some of what I perceive as normalcy.  That said I am thinking about getting SOW Gettysburg. For those that may have it is the gameplay pretty much the same as Waterloo? From the screenshots I have seen it appears so.

I reinstalled the other night. I was kind of disappointed  with the Graphics and UI after plying Waterloo  the past few weeks. But definitely wish I could do the Gettysburg battles in the Waterloo 'world'.

Hi Longknife

It does make a difference if you have more of an interest or connection with the subject matter. Also the names can be a problem in Waterloo if you are not familiar with them.

The engine is not as refined as Waterloo.

I also have GB as does Beef. We will be playing it at some time.

Try the free demo. It is an old version though.

That pretty well nails it though I had not considered it until you said it. I have a passing interest in Waterloo but an intense one in the Civil War.

While I have no practical knowledge of modding SOW it would seem that it is very mod friendly. Wouldnt it be possible to mod Waterloo to play CW battles? I mean the other night MP we were playing on a Gettysburg map until it froze. Its also possible to change/modify uniforms so to my laymans mind it would seem possible.

What mods do you use in GB? I am presently surfing their forum & see some very nice ones. In regards to the UI I thought this mod quite nice & pretty much the equal of Waterloo.

Well you cant really bring the GB troops into Waterloo but you can use most of the maps in Waterloo and do for the KS mod.

Hi all

The KS Group did an ACW mod for Gettysburg called "Couriers and Maps", we think it improves the gameplay. There is also another very good mod by Martin James compatible with C&M called (I think) "Additional ACW Flags and Sprites" which covers the early war uniforms as well as a load of OOBs and sprites/flags for the trans-Mississippi.

I played the Gettysburg demo last night & enjoyed it greatly. I will be purchasing it & the add ons this weekend.

The engine is not as refined as Waterloo.

I am wondering what the difference is between the two of them is? Right now my time in Waterloo & GB is pretty much about the same. Other then the UI looking different I did not see a tremendous difference. I even thought the graphics were pretty much on par. I am sure I am new enough that I dont know what I dont know so would appreciate any insight.

Hi Longknife

They both use the same engine. However Waterloo has been slightly tweaked. Also

•   Waterloo uses the new MyGui interface
•   Waterloo allows men to fortify buildings
•   Waterloo allows Square formations as well as others
•   Doctrine for Waterloo is different. More reliance on combined arms
•   Waterloo has some functions removed which were available in GB

They are both great games. Different enough to justify owning both. They are also 50% off on Matrix which gives you a serial as well as a Steam key.

Some of us in DOW own both. We will be playing both.

Hope this helps.

Thanks brother! I appreciate the insight!

I noticed playing GB last night I was immediately more comfortable & suddenly realized why. I knew what I was looking at.

All the uniforms & flags in Waterloo are so foreign to me. In GB I could glance at a unit & know if it was Union or Confederate. In Waterloo I have no freaking idea LOL Consequently I am having a hard time putting together a mental picture of the landscape so to speak of the battle.
I guess I just need to play it more.
