Mission Summary :
The last weeks have been damp and cold. It’ s not exactly the kind of weather you expected in the Middle East. We've been here since September and the only thing we have fought with so for was boredom. We have been away from our families, your friends and our life for too long. Last month, on the 17th the air offensive started. From what we have seen on CNN, Saddam took a heavy pounding but on the ground it’s been quiet… almost. At the end of last month Saddam forces made an attempt to take a Saudi town of Al-Khafji. Two of our recon units were trapped in the city for a couple of days but we let the Saudis to liberate they homeland a few days after. Two LAVs were lost due to friendly fire.
You are part of Task Force Ripper, 2nd Marine Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine division. Our tanks have been mixed up with LAVs (NZLAV) to give you more flexibility. Our long wait has finally come to an end. Two days ago President Bush rejected Soviet peace plan and demanded Iraq begin withdrawal from Kuwait by noon Feb. 23 to avoid ground war. Iraqi information official branded U.S. position “shameful ultimatum and set one-sixte of Kuwait’s 950 oil wells ablaze. Today it’s the time to cross the border and liberate the country.
MapExcerpts of the battalion commander's (HVAOC 6) orders for...BLUEFOR (D.O.W.)
1) SITUATION:a) Enemy:Iraqi forces have been under relentless attacks since January 17th and are expected to be severely weakened. According to our S2 data we are facing XX Corps 14th Infantry Division which is expected to be reinforced by a nearby 5th Mechanised Division. Their equipment is made of older Russian designs T-55s and BMP-1. The enemy had several months to prepare for a defence and is expected to fight from well prepared positions. Their artillery was mostly destroyed during the air campaign but in spite of their we are fighting the 3rd largest army in the world battle-hardened during recent war with Iran.
b) Own:We are a reinforced C Company Task Force Ripper made of the following units:
2 platoons of M-60A3s (TTS)
2 platoons of LAV-25s (NZLAV)
2x M113 ITV from the battalion support company
1x M113 MICLIC
1x M9 Combat Engineering Vehicle (Wisent ARV)
1x M113 Eng
2x Supply Truck
2x Fuel Truck
Other friendly units will advance along the front so make sure that you have a positive ID before you open fire. I know I repeat it over and over but is imperative that you make sure that what you is in you sights is enemy. We don’t need any more blue on blue incidents.
c) Attachments and detachments:1x Smoke Screen to cover breaching operation. (Trigger 1)
1x off map artillery battery HE, ICM
1x battery of MLRS with ICM
2) MISSION:Your mission is to advance through the minefield and reach PL Midway. Once reached, you will prepare a hasty defence and wait for the the rest of the Task Force to advance through the breach. Our ultimate goal is Al Jaber airbase located near Kuwait City.
3) EXECUTION: Breech the minefield and head towards Kuwait City.
4) TERRAIN AND WEATHER:Terrain ahead is mostly flat like a pool table and I have nothing more to tell you about it. February has been rainy and this day is expected to be no different. Furthermore, Iraqi forces set several oil wells on fire which limited visibility to approximately 1000 m. A big advantage of this is that their forces do not have thermal sights and can see shit in these condition. The disadvantage is plainly obvious: our aviation assets have very limited chance to support our advance and it will be difficult to ID the target.
