Afghanistan '11 - The Quest for the Light Infantry Mindset

Afghanistan '11 is such a brilliant game that makes me want to put it through its paces. I am a big fan of William Lind's work and one of his recent books is just about fighting insurgencies. So here I go for a short open question.

Oh yeah. The Taliban show up in mass against my forward operating base.

In 4th Generation Warfare Handbook
, Lind and Thiele argue that this type of warfare is essentially a light infantry's fight. The real life Taliban and militias, as well as the ones portrayed in Afghanistan '11 pack very nimble kits, and their firepower is limited. But according to the before mentioned book, light infantry's main asset is its mobility.

In an ideal situation, forces fighting an insurgency should mirror the enemy and adopt the so-called "light infantry mentality": be always ready, improvise to make up for the absence of massive firepower, develop an ambush mentality and (above all) be extremely mobile.

How to fight the Taliban and militias as a light infantry force? How to be mobile enough to deserve the title "light infantry"?

Although indispensable, moving troops with MRAPs is moderately...

Falcon BMS - Balkans Theater of Operation for BMS 4.33 U3

Have you tried this theater of operations for Falcon BMS? If you have not been following Falcon BMS lately, there were some very nice updates on the 4.33 version (the so-called U1, U2 and U3). You will need to be up to date with the U3 in order to be able to play the Balkans.

That being said, here are some snapshots of my first mission for the "Under Siege" campaign.

Taking off from the Casale airbase was quick and uneventful. Here I am slowing down so my wingman can catch up.

Mission: destroy enemy air defenses. Here I am, cruising at 15,000 feet over the Adriatic Sea, hoping for my HARM missiles to find their targets.

Tacview 1.6.0 is now available to everyone!

Download: HERE

The long awaited real-time telemetry is here! Use it with DCS World, FSX, Prepar3D, or X-Plane to record and review in real-time a flight in progress. An first draft of the instructor remote control is also available. This tool enables you to control up to four simulators, to assist trainee pilots and reduce their workload.

To prevent cheating, real-time telemetry may be disabled during network sessions depending on the host preferences.

These two new features go naturally well together: Use the real-time telemetry to watch in real time your trainee from outside and inside the cockpit. Help him/her using the remote control to pause its flight simulator and actuate some of its aircraft controls. In the next update, you will be able to directly bind joystick and keyboard to remote control commands.

All Tacview network features are independent and can be combined the way you want. For example, you can combine the real-time telemetry and the online-debriefing to review, with your fellow squadrons leaders, in real-time, a network battle in progress like a red-flag training.

In addition, many updates and fixes are introduced in this version...
