IL-2 Sturmovik / DCS World - Strafing with the Spitfire

Let's talk ground targets, guns and WWII aircraft.

The Operation Epsom Campaign for DCW World, has you strapped to a Spitfire in an armed recon role. The Spitfire LF Mk. IX featured can't carry bombs so you are limited to your guns.

Strafing by aircraft in WWII is a great topic that I would like to explore in this blog post.

There is probably no better book (at least in english) about WWII strafing than Colgan's Allied Strafing in World War II: A Cockpit View of Air to Ground Battle. This highly recommended book, although oriented mostly on the American P47, will help you to get into the "strafing mindset".

This blog post is focused in the Spitfire, but most of the same principles can be applied to other aircraft.

My first exhibit is a quick mission in IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Kuban, in which I'm flying a Soviet Spitfire MKVB.

In this quick mission, I strafe German targets that can't shoot back at me (artillery positions), which is great practice. A video recording of this mission is available below (please visit the YouTube version for full HD).

First things first, it is advisable not to dive down at fu ...

Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 - Operation Pugilist DLC is Out

What a great wargaming weekend ahead, folks.

Graviteam's treat for this weekend and many more is Operation Pugilist, with a new 100 square kilometers of Tunisian battlefield around Wadi Zigzaou-Zarat. The campaign features the engagements of 22-24 March at the Mareth Line (playable from both sides).

I apologize for the dark images, but it is 0400 and the sun is not up yet.

Briefing and maneuver map from the British side.

I started the campaign as the British side and it is a pleasure to play. Just like in the real life battle, my bridgehead across the Zigzaou River is tenuous, with just a few men and a very scant prospect of being reinforced with enough AT guns and tanks.

Nantucket for P3Dv4 Released!

Were pleased to announce that Nantucket Island has been updated to version 1.02 for full compatibility with Lockheed Martins Prepar3D version 4. In addition, the seasonal and dynamic animation functionality has been converted to use SimObject Display Engine (SODE) in place of our old Viva technology. We think youll agree that the ease of use (not to mention not having to worry about compatibility with new sub-versions of P3D) make it well worth the switch. This new SODE version covers both Prepar3D 3 and 4.

Other Changes in version 1.02:
New grass textures for better realism
Enhanced ground poly textures
Lots more static planes - both GA and bizjets
Added detail in open hangar
Dynamic apron night lighting (P3Dv4 only)

These changes are planned as an update to the FSX version as well. Details will be announced once a release date has been set.

If you already own Nantucket for FSX and P3D3, download version 1.02 by logging into http://iblueyonder.com/my-account/ and click on the link to your Nantucket purchase. The 1.02 installer will be available in your list of downloads. Your registration number will work for this version as well.

If you hav ...
