Dev Blog #1 — The Battle of Montenotte
Tue, March 10, 2026

Today we're sharing our first Devlog for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars, featuring the Battle of Montenotte from Napoleon's early Italian campaign. It offers a glimpse of how battles unfold in the game, with armies maneuvering across varied terrain while relying on formations, positioning, and timing to gain the upper hand.

Watch YouTube Video

French forces push against Austrian troops across hills, farmland, and villages under foggy April weather conditions. Terrain, visibility, and well-timed flanking movements all play a role in shaping the course of the engagement and determining how quickly the momentum of a battle can change.

The footage also highlights smaller infantry formations known as platoons (pelotons), which serve as the building blocks of larger formations on the battlefield. We'll be sharing more details about formations and battlefield command in future dev blogs.

We hope you like this first look at the battlefield. More devlogs are coming soon!

Dev Blog #2 — The Morale System
Thu, March 26, 2026

Today we're sharing our second Devlog for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars, this time focusing on Morale — one of the key battlefield systems that shapes how units perform under pressure. Morale can shift rapidly during an engagement, with battlefield position, local superiority, and nearby events all influencing how long formations can hold and when the balance of a fight begins to turn.

Watch YouTube Video

Morale must be watched just as closely as casualties. A unit may begin to waver not only from losses, but also from attacks on its flank or rear, or from the retreat of nearby allies. At the same time, the presence of friendly units nearby helps steady morale and slows its decline, rewarding cohesive battle lines over isolated detachments. A single breakthrough can spread panic across the line, turning a local setback into a wider collapse if the situation is not brought under control.

At the same time, retreat does not always mean defeat. A unit that manages to disengage and withdraw under cover can recover its morale and return to the fight, making battlefield management and timing just as important as raw numbers.

Clear battlefield feedback is essential for reading these moments as they develop. Units display their morale state in the interface, helping players judge when formations are steady, wavering, or close to breaking. We also plan to expand battlefield readability further with additional visual cues in future updates.

We hope you enjoy this second look at the battlefield systems of Veterans: Napoleonic Wars!

War Chronicle — Napoleon's Italian Campaign
Tue, April 7, 2026

Napoleon's Italian Campaign, illustrated in Veterans: Napoleonic Wars. A look at the spirit of historical events as they translate into the game.

The campaign included several major engagements — among them the battles of Montenotte, Dego and Rivoli. Each one shows the tactical reality of warfare in this period: rapid movement under pressure, using terrain to your advantage, and concentrating force at the right place and time.

Watch YouTube Video

Speed, positioning, and local superiority often decided the outcome long before the final clash. Armies moved along narrow roads, river crossings, and open farmland, where a single well-timed advance or sudden breakthrough could collapse an entire defensive line. Even when outnumbered, a commander who acted with coordination and boldness could turn the tide.

Terrain played an equally important role — bridges, rivers, and high ground shaped every engagement. Holding a key crossing or an elevated position could mean the difference between standing firm and being forced into retreat.

By visualizing these historical dynamics, we want to show how the principles of Napoleonic warfare are woven into the gameplay of Veterans: Napoleonic Wars.

If you enjoy military history, this one's for you!

Dev Blog #3 — New Units, Weather, and Visual Enhancements
Tue, 28 April 2026

Today we're sharing our third Dev Blog for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars! This time, we are excited to showcase an update focusing on battlefield atmosphere, tactical preparation, and visual polish that brings the battles to life.

A major focus for us has been refining the visual and tactical side of the game. We have updated our environment textures and animations, making the maps look richer and more realistic during your battles. Alongside this, we've implemented more accurate and precise battalion formation animations. Your soldiers will now maneuver and form up into clean, disciplined lines and squares.

To further deepen the immersion, we are introducing volumetric smoke and fog. As musket volleys are exchanged and artillery batteries pound the enemy lines, the battlefield will dynamically fill with lingering smoke, adding a dramatic visual effect to every firefight. We are also introducing a new weather condition — Rain.

Finally, preparation and logistics are taking a step forward. We are happy to introduce the Deployment Phase, allowing commanders to carefully position their infantry, cavalry, and artillery before the first shot is fired. To support your armies, we've also added new units to the roster: Generals to oversee the battle, and Ammo Supply wagons to keep your lines firing. All of this ties directly into our balanced and re-worked Morale system, ensuring that tactical decisions — from positioning to supply lines — impact your troops.

We hope you enjoy this look at the latest additions to Veterans: Napoleonic Wars. Don't forget to wishlist us on Steam!

Welcome to our fourth Dev Blog for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars! Today, we are happy to show you new game mechanics, new unit art, and new historical maps we are working on.

First, we are introducing a new mechanic: Pre-Battle Army Management. You can use the new menus to visit the Arsenal, buy new weapons, and equip your infantry, cavalry, and artillery. You can also manage your soldiers in the Barracks to make sure your army is ready for war.

Next, we added New Unit Portraits. When you select your troops, you will now see new detailed 2D art for different types of soldiers, officers, and cavalry. This brings more personality to your army.

We are also working hard on environments and showing early looks at four historical battlefields: the Battle of Mondovi, the Battle of Arcole, the Battle of Lodi (featuring its famous bridge), and the Battle of Rivoli (introducing winter landscapes and snow).

Finally, we are adding Night Missions! You will now have to command your army in the dark. This creates a very different atmosphere, with musket flashes lighting up the night battlefield.

We hope you enjoy this look at the latest updates for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars. Thank you for your support, and please don't forget to wishlist us on Steam!

Dev Blog #5 — Behind the Scenes: Building the Montenotte Map
Wed, 1 July 2026

For this dev blog, we wanted to show you something a little different. No gameplay this time - instead, a look at how one of our battlefields is actually made.

Here is Montenotte, one of the first maps in the game, coming together piece by piece in the hands of our level artists and level designers, from a blank canvas to a finished battlefield.

Why rework a map you have already seen?

After our playtests, the feedback was clear. The map felt cramped. Players were squeezed between the mountains, with little room for real tactics. Reinforcements in the second phase were a problem too: they arrived too close to the Austrian flank, so a fast cavalry rush could decide the battle before it had really begun.

There is also some context worth sharing. The first version of Montenotte was built early in development, before several of our gameplay systems were ready. Fortifications, for example, did not yet exist in their current form, so much of the map was laid out without those tools in mind.

What we changed

More room to maneuver. We expanded the battlefield and opened up real distance between the key points of interest, so there is finally space to plan a tactic and commit to it.

Reinforcements as a decision. We pulled the reinforcement positions further back. Bringing them into the fight is now a choice you make as a commander, not an automatic rush.

A redoubt worth taking. The redoubt is no longer simple decoration. It is now a real objective - a position you need to fight for and hold.

A strong first impression

Montenotte is one of the first missions in the game, so it shapes how new players feel about everything that follows.

Thank you for all of your feedback, and thank you for your support. Development continues, and there is more on the way.

War in the Desert: Inside the Egyptian Battlefield
Thu, 16 July 2026

Today we're giving you a closer look at the Egyptian battlefield: how we build the desert, how the heat will test your army, and who you will face there.

Terrain That Shapes the Battle

The environment is not just a backdrop - it plays a tactical role. Dunes slow down unit movement, forcing you to think carefully about your approach routes.

And then there is the heat. The scorching Egyptian sun is represented by an air distortion effect - a shimmering heat haze implemented as post-processing. It adds a real sense of the desert to every battle: the air itself seems to tremble above the sand.

But in this campaign, heat is more than a visual effect.

Heat Fatigue: A New Campaign Mechanic

The campaign introduces a heat fatigue mechanic, reflecting the unfamiliar climate your soldiers have to endure. Units accumulate heat fatigue as they take part in missions, and the more exhausted they are, the less effective they become in battle. Pushing worn-out men past their limit will also cost you reputation.

There are two ways to deal with heat fatigue:

And one more thing: camel units do not suffer from the heat - a natural advantage of a mount born for the desert.

New Factions: The Mamluks and the Ottoman Empire

The Egyptian battlefield brings two new forces, each with its own roster and character.

Riding Into Battle on Camelback

The dromedary camel units deserve a closer look. Each camel carries a two-man crew: one soldier controls the mount while the other fires, and in melee both fight. Functionally they fill the role of cavalry, but with their own unique animations that set them apart on the battlefield.

The dromedary units also differ in appearance - from the familiar French uniforms to variants incorporating elements of traditional desert clothing.

The Technical Side

Our environment is built entirely on low-poly objects - this is the foundation of our optimization approach. We do not use Unity's standard terrain system: every element of the battlefield is a low-poly asset, which gives us full control over both performance and visual style.

To keep that rich, detailed look, we sculpt high-detail source models in ZBrush (a heavy, resource-intensive process) and then bake all that detail into normal map textures. The result: in-game assets stay lightweight, but the surfaces still read as fully detailed.

More to come - stay tuned!

Visual Update
Fri, August 14, 2026

Several new visual elements have been added to Veterans: Napoleonic Wars recently. Let's take a closer look at what's new.

Key art
In case you haven't seen it yet, here's our new key art, along with a few glimpses into the creative process behind it!

You can download the full version here (https://steamcommunity.com/linkfilter/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Fdrive%2Ffolders%2F1jIfS3ra4eK1pF19aRw_1-4eOQpDbnKyl%3Fusp%3Dsharing) with and without the logo.

Main Menu

The main menu now features a full day-and-night cycle and is built entirely as a 3D scene. A windmill turns in the breeze, and grass sways in the wind, creating a calm, living scene that welcomes you before you dive into battle.

Destructible Towers

We added destructible towers to make the battlefield feel more dynamic and to give players a clearer sense of interaction with the environment around them. Towers now break down through multiple visual stages depending on how much damage they have taken, so their condition tells you something at a glance. This also works as direct feedback for the player: seeing a tower crumble is confirmation that your shots are landing.

Boats and Surf

To bring more life to the coastline, we added boats along the shore. Combined with newly implemented surf effects, the water now feels active and alive, adding depth to the world around the battle without pulling attention away from the fighting itself.

Marching Dust

Troops now kick up dust as they move across the battlefield, adding another layer of visual feedback to their movement.

Stay in formation:

We will keep sharing updates as development continues. As always, thank you for your amazing support!

Dev Blog #8 — Refining the Battlefield
Fri, September 4, 2026

Fellow commanders, welcome to our new dev blog.

In our newest video, we walk you through several updates coming to Veterans: Napoleonic Wars.

Narrative moments

We added a bit more storytelling to battles. Missions can now open with a short narrative introduction, and during the battle you'll see short lines describing what's happening on the battlefield - reinforcements arriving, troops advancing, flanking maneuvers, and more. These lines point you toward your next objective in a more atmospheric way, and give you a bit of historical context behind the events - for example, why the Battle of Montenotte was fought to split the Austrian and Sardinian forces.

Faster point capture

We also changed how point capture works. Capture time is now shorter. This was one of your most requested changes, and we agree: capturing a point took too long, and it slowed the battle down where it shouldn't. With this update, those moments move faster, and the overall flow of battle feels more balanced.

Reinforcements arrive from the map edge

Enemy reinforcements no longer appear out of nowhere. Now, they march in from the edge of the map, just like real battlefield reinforcements would. This makes every fight feel more grounded, and gives you a chance to react.

Side objectives

New side objectives are now available in battles. Complete them to win extra rewards, such as resources you can use to recruit more troops for your next battle.

Thanks for watching. Tell us what you think in the comments, or drop by our Discord (https://steamcommunity.com/linkfilter/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscord.gg%2FmZgGJzd6yK) and share your feedback with us. See you next time!

The visual update continues with more changes and improvements across Veterans: Napoleonic Wars. Here's another look at some of the new additions.

Artillery Firing Effects

Artillery fire now has a more pronounced visual effect, with a brief muzzle flash followed by a thick burst of smoke. We're still fine-tuning the smoke density and dissipation to make the effect look as realistic and natural as possible.

Updated Campaign Maps

The mission select screen has a new look: campaigns are now shown on detailed historical maps of Italy and Egypt, with marked battle locations from Montenotte and Lodi to Shubrakhit. This is where you'll choose where to lead your troops next.

New Unit Visuals: Ottoman Officer & General

We're continuing to diversify unit visuals across the roster - refining older models and adding new ones. Here's a look at the mounted Ottoman officer and general, sabers drawn and ready to lead their cavalry into the charge.

A New Look for the Camp UI

We've reworked the Camp UI and created new artwork to go with it - a painted camp scene that serves as the backdrop for the various menus.

The demo now features four battles: Montenotte, Rivoli and Arcole in Italy, and Alexandria in Egypt, plus a tutorial battle to help you get your bearings. The demo is available until October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT. Once you have led your army into battle, tell us how it went on the Steam Community hub or in our Discord (https://steamcommunity.com/linkfilter/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscord.com%2Finvite%2FmZgGJzd6yK). Bug reports, balance thoughts and impressions of how the battlefield feels are all welcome.

Veterans: Napoleonic Wars — Early Access Roadmap
Mon, October 26, 2026

Fellow commanders, With the Early Access launch of Veterans: Napoleonic Wars just around the corner, we'd like to share our plans for the future of the game and give you a glimpse of what we're working towards.

But first of all, thank you to everyone who joined us on the battlefield during Steam Next Fest! Your feedback, bug reports, and honest opinions have been incredibly valuable, and they've already helped us make improvements to the game.

Thanks to your feedback, we've prepared a Day One patch that addresses several issues raised during the demo. For example, one of the most common complaints was how long it took to capture the redoubt in the first mission, so we've shortened the capture time to make the opening battle flow more smoothly.

This is just one example of how your feedback helps us improve the game, and we're already looking into other areas you've brought to our attention.

Where We're Going

Early Access is only the beginning for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars. We have plenty of plans for the time ahead, and our goal is to keep expanding the game while refining the tactical experience at its core.

Not every update will look the same. Some will focus on smaller improvements, quality-of-life changes, and balance adjustments. Others will bring larger additions that expand the scope of your campaigns and offer new tactical challenges.
Beyond the major additions outlined in our roadmap, we'll continue working on stability, performance, AI behavior, and the overall feel of battles. We want to make sure we're not just adding new content, but also improving what's already there.

Our current plans for the future of Veterans: Napoleonic Wars are outlined in the roadmap below.

Shaping the Future Together

These are our current plans, but priorities may change as development progresses. We'll continue listening to your feedback, reviewing what works and what could be improved, and making adjustments along the way.

Community feedback will remain an important part of this process. Whether it's something you enjoyed, a mechanic that could use more work, or an idea you'd like us to consider, we want to hear about it.

We encourage you to share your thoughts in the Steam discussions or join us on Discord. We'll be following your conversations closely as we continue developing the game.

There's still plenty of work ahead, and we're looking forward to sharing more updates with you as Early Access progresses.

Thank you again for your support and for helping us make Veterans: Napoleonic Wars better.
Form the line, and we'll see you on the battlefield on October 28!

Fellow commanders,
The wait is over. Veterans: Napoleonic Wars is available in Early Access starting now!

Take command of regiments of infantry, cavalry, and artillery and lead them into battle in real time. Hold the line, form columns and squares, and keep a close eye on morale, fatigue, and line of sight as the battle unfolds. Your soldiers are your most valuable resource, so look after them and build an army of veterans that can turn the tide of history.

Early Access launches with the following battles: Montenotte, Arcole, Rivoli, Alexandria, Shubra Khit, Pyramids, Marengo, Austerlitz, Friedland, Wagram, and the Tutorial Map.

Thank You

It has not been an easy road. Those who have followed the game since its announcement may know how much work has gone into it, and we are glad to finally put it in your hands.

Many of the challenges along the way were easier to overcome because of you. Our community and the content creators who covered the game shared new ideas, analyzed the battle system with us, helped test the game, reported bugs, shared their impressions, and simply cared along the way. Thank you for that. We hope to keep your support, and we will do our best to live up to your expectations on the road to full release.

What's Next

We have plenty of plans for Veterans: Napoleonic Wars, and you can find them in our roadmap. Take a look and tell us what you think.

Your voice will keep shaping that road. Whether it's something you enjoyed, a mechanic that needs more work, or an idea you'd like us to consider, we want to hear about it. Share it in the Steam discussions or join us on Discord, and we will be following your conversations closely. We're excited to build the game together with you.

Form the line, and we'll see you on the battlefield!
