ABOUT THIS GAME

Welcome to Scourge of War. We hope you are ready for a fight. This game places you in command of the units of armies and allows you to refight the many historical bloody clashes during the age of regimental base warfare. This is a type of wargame that we call real time command simulation. Real time command simulation combat begins with Sid—as in Sid Meier, who released the now legendary wargame Sid Meier’s Gettysburg (SMG) in 1997. This game established a new genre, freeing players from the confines of the earlier wargame conventions of the hex grid and dice roll. It placed the units on a 3D battlefield and lets the player/commander move units around. There were no turns—combat happened in real time and could be interrupted only by putting the entire game on pause. It also included a multi-player (MP) feature that is still in use today. Then came Sid Meier’s Antietam in 1998, an evolutionary release that introduced players to the deceptively rolling terrain outside of Sharpsburg and included other battles in the Antietam Campaign at South Mountain and Crampton’s Gap. The next step in the evolution of the genre was Breakaway Games’ transfer of the game engine to the Napoleonic Wars with the release of Waterloo: Napoleon’s Last Battle, in 2001. The final chapter for the Sid Meier engine was Austerlitz: Napoleon’s Greatest Victory, released in 2002. A new chapter in black powder era combat simulation opened in 2005 with the release of Civil War: Bull Run by Mad Minute Games. This game is built on the traditions of the Sid Meier games but was an entirely new generation. It was noted for its highly capable Artificial Intelligence (AI) opponent and careful attention to historical detail. The second and final game from this very small company was Take Command: 2nd Manassas, appearing in 2006. This release also included the battles of Cedar Mountain and Chantilly, the bookends of the campaign. Both games received multiple awards reflecting the historical accuracy and intensity of the real time command experience.

Then came the start of the Scourge of War series. Recreating Gettysburg and Waterloo in the same fashion. It's been many years since those initial releases and old men need something to do in their twilight years. So, we figured we'd take our time and fix some issues, rebrand the game, get on Steam, upgrade the art, and see what we can do to improve performance. There are improvements to the graphics engine and a large number of next generation art assets. The AI has improvements that build on the experience from previous games. The AI is smarter, meaner, and more likely to run you off the battlefield unless you are a skilled wargamer. This game now uses the Steam multi-Player features to allow you to match your skills against human opponents anywhere in the world the AI or both at once. So, make sure your guns are clean, your powder is dry, and get ready for battle on the legendary battlegrounds of history!

Early Access Game

Get instant access and start playing; get involved with this game as it develops.
Note: This Early Access game is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.

WHAT THE DEVELOPERS HAVE TO SAY:

Why Early Access?
“Scourge of War has been a long labor of love. It's a garage game where everyone that contributes works other full time jobs. We run very tight with our community and frankly there is still a lot to do before we are ready to anoint this version. We have recreated our MP experience using the Steam Libraries, but there are still a lot of features to support. Leaderboards, Lobby, Steamworks for Mods, all this and more are why we decided on Early Access. Due to the size of our team, we really want to engage the community before we decide on the final version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“Probably a year, but that's a very rough guess. We do plan on having frequent new builds.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
“Mostly we are looking at full Steam Support before we are done. Every item that makes sense to support will be supported. Our mod community is strong, so we want to engage Steamworks in order to host and support the mods. We plan on the Lobby, the Leaderboards, and making sure that our community is behind our final product. We are also looking for a single version to support all of our content. No more WL, GB, QB, just Scourge of War and DLCs.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
“Quite playable, MP still has issues on our conversion to SteamMP, the lobby is not fully functional and it's not been tested fully for our optimizations. All of our scenarios are playable. Refer to the About This section for details and follow our announcements as each version will contain new updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
“Absolutely, we will give a better price before release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
“We are going to fully engage with the community. We are not fast, but we are thorough. We have our own forums on our site, but our plans are to support the community forums on Steam. There we will engage the community and find the most desired features and give solid answers on when we can support what they want. We'll depend on them to help track down the bugs that prevent people from fully enjoying the experience. Each feature request will be considered. Our team are players as well, so we want what you want.”

Dev Log: MP Update

Working towards being more active in keeping everyone up to date of where we are currently. We started last year with the goal of converting Scourge of War Waterloo into a full Steam release. To us that meant replacing all the libraries that we use with Steam API where provided. This was mostly seen in our MP library. We started with a great lib called Raknet and I cannot thank them enough. Now it's time to move on and we're ripping out the guts and shoving Steam Networking inside. This is taking longer than we thought as we still work part time, although we've been doing it so long that a few are retired.

The Waterloo idea has moved on to Scourge of War Remastered. A common SOW 64 bit game to run all of our content as we upgrade it. That includes all of our battles eventually released as separate DLC to the main game. We also have a lot of new content and my hope someday that a fantasy or scifi mod is created for everyone to try :)

We also plan on using the Steam Workshop for mods, removing our old copy protection, using Steam leaderboards, etc. All in on Steam and very happy they provide so many tools. I still remember decades ago when I was upset that I had to download Steam and have it running to play Half Life 2. Now it's just time to grow up :)

We hoped to get it out earlier, but we moved the date back. We plan to do early access as soon as we figure out how to do that. We want to put it out there so people can play. We understand that there is no way to buy the game currently, and we want that fixed.

Progress?? Today we got the client and server connected and into a game. It's taken a while to get there, but we are there. Trying not to mess up what works while still using the new guts. We took a break, have not worked on the code for a few years, but we're getting back in there. A bunch of grumpy old men trying to use the green reanimator liquid on a classic.

We had two choices, keep the game with our publisher until the sales slipped into the nether or reset the base and give it a new more workable base. We hope you agree and support our choice.

Life is absolutely crazy! You just never know what is going to happen or where things will end up. I find myself with extra time as I have 3 months to find a new job. So I am interviewing and trying to fix SOW bugs. The main issue is around switching the guts of MP still. It's been a headbanger, but I finally found the culprit today and it's a huge relief. There is still cleanup, but this is the last bug that would prevent a wimpy early access release.

It's hard to not just rewrite everything, you really want to when you are looking at code you wrote many years ago. It's just not practical though. The first release will have just a few enhancements as we are really doing a port and removing a bunch of garbage no longer needed. We hope to have many release as we move forward and full Steam support in every way that makes sense.

We hope for a June release, so keep your fingers crossed!

Sorry for the completely unrelated image, but I was feeling nostalgic. This is the very first time I ever put my game code out for the world. The people on that team have done some pretty cool things.

So I was trying to debug why our uploaded version was crashing. The logs said that it was missing sprites, so I put in the sprites, but it still kept crashing. I have a staging folder and I was trying to launch from there and it crashed every time, as if I was doing nothing. Thing is that it was Steam enabled, so as soon as I launched the game from the staging folder, Steam shut it down and launched the version in the Steam folder. Talk about frustration! But I finally figured out why I was a dope today.

In real life I got fired. That was a shocker. It was over the fact that I said from day 1 I would not commute more than 15 minutes. They changed the HR policy and decided they did not care about the terms of my employment. It happens to the best of us, but it really is a shock because it just destroys everything you thought you could depend upon. You fight for your family and do what it takes to get the income coming in again. So if you see any odd pictures of me...

But SOW is the subject here. Between all the craziness that real life throws at you, we've been working to try and get something out that is a little different, runs a little better, and looks much nicer. It's a work in progress, so it's early access. We are just trying to get everything together and we'll have it up for sale. We've had some changes on the team, but my right hand is back in charge. Jim has taken the reigns again so you can be sure that everything will get done. We'll get all the team listed for the credits as we've got some new faces and the old guard together. We're not fast, but we do finish and if we're lucky we'll give you something you like and improve it enough or make enough promises for you to be happy. We still have major work to get done, it's not close to where we want it to be, but we are a small team and would love the input of our supporters.

We are still thinking that June will be our release, so stay tuned sportsfans.

We've submitted a build for release, but it got denied. Since we do not have a typical client server architecture, they could not confirm the MP. We tried to explain how it worked, that we've had the game this way on Steam before, and we're waiting for the response. I apologize that it's not ready by our release date. But please be assured we are doing what we can to get it out as soon as possible. Even if we just have to remove some tags so that they can pass it, we will. It's submitted again, so we are just waiting. Thank you!"

Very happy to finally get it out. We are much less intensity than earlier in our lives. The older we get the more amazing it is that we released this game by our little team.

It's a ton of code, I'm not sure I could even do it again. So now we are just modifying what we already created. Adding the features we've always wanted and a lot of just getting things right. If MP is not working for you, just open the ports. If it still doesn't work, then please be patient. We have plans to make it a lot easier using a different API from Steam.

We have enhancements for the maps. We no longer have the 32 bit memory limits and we run a good bit faster. Just a little to wet your whistle. We really hope you enjoy our efforts. I was also pleasantly surprised to see we had a German translation with others planned.

For those that have already played, hopefully the new eye candy will help you out. For others, it's finally ready.

Big items to come, SOWGB as a DLC. Enhanced MP. Leaderboards and Lobby. Just to list a few items.

Thank you from all the team. It's all the players and the great feedback that brought us together to give it another go.

I found that SOWR's code seems to be exactly the same as SOWWL's, and I can use SOWWL's DLC file to unlock LG,WE,QB in SOWR. And use all of SOWWL's mods, including DOWToolbar.

MP Update

I've got to figure out how to write these things without having to find a picture to go along with it. Thankfully the team has a folder with screenshots, so I have some options.

I was on contract for a while with a crypto firm and they changed direction and ended the contract. So I'm looking for my next gig, but also not wasting any time and going full time on MP while also interviewing. Of course if we sell over 100k copies, then I'll do this full time, but we're pretty far away from that :) No worries, it's always been a labor of love for the team.

I've discovered a few things in the past few years, I'm not a huge fan of the new versions of C++. Maybe if I spent more time using it then things would be different. I've never been one to create template, although I use them all the time. But there is a point where the code is very hard to read and I've always been someone to read the code rather than the docs. I've also spent a few years now learning cloud backend services coding in Go. It's so EASY. After decades of C++, writing micro-services let's you focus so much more on the architecture rather than the code. It's been nice to add a new skill to my portfolio.

Not much of an MP update so far. I have the lobby working. Right now that will be the way, the only way, to launch MP games. I had to take the Steam version and backfit it into our older PowerLobby feature. But it's going well and it connects much better. By doing it this way, the Steam Client acts as the intermediary for MP. Now I am working hard to get the kinks out of the game launch.

I have a couple of routers at home, a vpn as well. Using the lobby connection method works everytime in launching a game between my machines when they are not on the same lan. The host list will pick up the lan games, but when I use the different routers, they can never see each other. But they can create a room and play a game together through there.

I knew there was going to be a way to do this through Steam. It's a big reason we went all in on Steam. When we were with Matrix, they had to run the lobby server. It was a horrible solution, but when power lobbies went down, we did not have any other choice. It was awesome that they did that for us, but I'd rather not be dependent on a publisher for that service. Yes, I know we are now dependent on Steam, but it's different.

Thank you everyone for being patient while we work through these issues. It's this community that convinced us to give it another go and move the games to x64.

I appreciate all the great feedback and we all attempt to answer the questions on the discussion group here and our new discord channel.

MP - Soon!

Thank you for all the support on our boards and on discord. We really appreciate it and even the criticisms have a ton of value for our early access.

I have this standing desk at home, but I also have 5 dogs and 2 cats. So everyday around noon, I look down and all I see is fur as the dogs like to sleep right below me. There's an entire room, a couch, chairs, but they have to be touching my legs. I can't put the desk lower because then I'm running over tails or having my girl Dixie interrupt me to go out every few minutes as she eyeballs a terrorist (in the shape of a Squirrel) running out back. She has somehow learned to put her snout under my mouse hand and continues this until I get up. Amazing her ability to get her way by preventing me from working until I take care of her. I'd admire her effort if she didn't do it so often. Right at my feet is Ejay, our latest re-homing effort. Sounds cute right? He's a Great Pyrenees and even as a puppy he's over 90 pounds. I just have to slowly push him out of the way, nothing wakes him up.

I finally got the MP connection where I've been striving for a while now. The little details matter so much in coding. I just have to clean up the screens and we can get it to our testers. It worked perfectly as I was able to play a game between my two different routers. One is behind a firewall, the other is not. It's the connection I've been striving to beat for a while now. No mapped ports, just Steam running and relaying the packets. Rufus!!! (sorry my daughter has been watching drew barrymore romcoms this week).

We've began beta testing. Found some bugs, fixed them, still testing.

This is how it works:

MP button will bring you right into the lobby screen.
You have to join or create a room in order to see anyone
Who ever created the room is the server
If the creator leaves, next person becomes the owner
Room disappears when everyone leaves

Owner hits the "enter staging room" button
everyone is notified that the server has started
just wait and when it's up you will join the game
once the server starts, the room is locked down (can't join again so don't leave)
once you are connected, you leave the lobby

now you are on the regular MP setup screen and all should work as it has in the past

This is the ONLY way to do MP now. Sorry if you like direct IP, but it really sucks with firewalls. This way will work to allow you to play with ANYONE connected to Steam. It's very cool how easy it is to connect. All packets are routed through the Steam client, so there's no worries.

It's probably buggy, but it does work.

- Updates on graphics of Waterloo AM and Waterloo PM maps

- Fixed unit "flying" over a bridge in the north-east of the Die Huegel map

- New Staging Room layout to better see commander's names

- Fixed Guard/Screen button of Grog Toolbar x64

- Major part of sdk now included in game/sdk folder

Scourge of War - Gettysburg

So we're facing a huge dilemma here. Our goal was to have every game use the same engine, but when we really got down to taking a look at it, we realize that it would take a long long time.

First all of the screens need to be converted to MyGUI, which is a great goal, but a lot of work. That work would add a lot of time to the project and we know for a fact that there are a lot of players that want GB now!

Second is that there have been a ton of changes in the engine, which means that it might not play the same. Syncing the AI will also take time.

The other option is to release it as it's own game, going back on all we've been saying. Bringing the critical updates into the GB engine. The worst thing about that is that the screens only support one language. This can be done over time, but we are trying to figure out the best answer for right now.

64 bit support
Async support
Steam lobby support

That we could deliver a ton faster. The price would be the same, whether as a DLC for our current release or as a new game makes no difference.

From the dev:
I'm still trying to figure this one out, but I just wanted to address the fact that you can see it but there is nothing there yet. This is what we commonly call as 'winging it'. I had to get it up to work with it and test it. So we're working live and we'll let you know when you can post your mods. I think for a long time SOW has been missing a common place for mods. Another great reason to be on Steam. So be excited, as we are, and look forward to a plethora of game play options.

About This Content
This DLC contains five scenarios covering this battle where the French left wing under Marshal Ney attacked the Allied forces under the command of the Duke of Wellington.

History
The Battle of Quatre Bras was one of a pair of battles fought by Napoleon's Army of the North on June 16, 1815, on second day of the Waterloo Campaign. In order to force apart the two Coalition armies that faced him, on the evening of the previous day Napoleon had divided his army into two wings. The Left Wing, the nearly 28, 000 men of the II Corps and the III Cavalry Corps under the newly-installed Marshal Michel Ney, was intended to push forward quickly past the crossroads at Quatre Bras to block the approach of Wellington's Anglo-Allied army from Brussels to the north. This would enable Napoleon's Right Wing-68,000 soldiers under combined the III, IV, and VI corps and Cavalry Reserve under Marshal Grouchy, with the added weight of the Napoleon's 20,000-man Imperial Guard in reserve-to crush the Prussian army as it approached from the east. Napoleon would then combine his entire army and turn it toward Wellington in front of Brussels.

Ney, however, had failed to push through the Quatre Bras intersection on the evening of June 15, and contented himself with massing his troops on the morning of June 16, squandering hours when he outnumbered the 8,000-man Anglo-Allied contingent more than two to one. Ney's attack did not start forward until 2:00 p.m., and an hour later the 5th British Infantry Division (7,400 men) and the 3rd Dutch Light Cavalry Brigade (1,400 men) arrived to even the odds for Wellington, who arrived in person to take command of the Allies. The 7,900 men of Jerome Bonaparte's 6th French Division arrived next, soon balanced on the Allied side by the appearance of the black-uniformed Brunswick Corps (9,200 men), and fighting became heavy all along the line. At 5:00 p.m., the 7,500 men of the British 3rd Division arrived, and tipped the weight of numbers permanently in favor of Wellington's army.

Ney now sent for the I Corps of d'Erlon, which had marched toward the Battle of Ligny, being fought at the same time by Napoleon's Right Wing a few miles to the east. Before the counter-marching I Corps could arrive, however, the Battle of Quatre Bras ended. Wellington's Anglo-Allied army had lost 4,800 men to Ney's 4,000, but most importantly, Napoleon's Left Wing had been unable to either advance toward Brussels or aid Napoleon's Right Wing in its attempt to crush the Prussians at Ligny. Both Coalition armies had survived the French June 16 attacks, and would combine two days later to put an end to Napoleon's career at Waterloo.

Mods

Finally got the mod upload tool working. We are going to work out the kinks and then we'll put it in the release for everyone to try. Next step is having the game query the mods from the Workshop. They are not put in the mods folder.

So.... If you have a mod, and you upload the mod, and you subscribe to that mod, then you will see it listed twice. Once from the Mod folder and once from Steam Workshop.

This is going to be so cool!!!!!!!!!!

No longer will you have to search around for a mod. No longer will you have to try and find a place to host a mod. You can also vote on them, let the world know the best ones.

As Randy's Mod is probably the most famous one, we let him put his up first. It was messed up, but it's there. I finally got a good one up by posting one of MarkT's maps.

This has been a big hole in the game, where do I post and get mods. Now it's answered and we're all excited to see all the mods in one place.

Thank you for the great engagement of the upgraded games. We we not sure that the community would welcome it, but it's nice to see we were wrong. We've had great engagement and it's good to see these niche games still have a good audience.

There are so many cool features we want to add, but we're always playing catch up. I have way too much on my plate and the team is very small with limited engagement this time around. So we're doing what we can and making sure to be consistent in what we promise. It's confusing as getting GB out early caused no end of questions and confusion. We will do everything we have stated though.

It's a quiet time now on Steam, but starting in Autumn begins a lot of sales and we'll be fully participating. We hope that will expose us to a larger player base. Which in turn we hope will allow more competition in the MP lobbies.

Currently we have the Ligny and Wavre in the Steam review process. It's taking a while due to some confusion on requirements.

Once we get everything caught up we do have a list of new items to add to the game engine that we really feel will add new playability.

Thank you from NorbSoftDev!

MP saves. That's been the bane of my existence (besides trolls) for the past few weeks. Made significant progress yesterday and was able to send the 33MB saved game across the wire during setup.

A long time ago Mitra created a way to do MP saves. It was a hack, but it did work if you set it up correctly. Everyone can thank him that we're even doing this as it was never part of the original plans. I had to ask the rest of the team how it even worked.

He created an ini file that had the name of a saved game. So the scenario loads, everyone picks their officer, then the same saved game is loaded by everyone at startup. The issue is that you have to get the saved game to everyone and they have to have the scenario and setup the ini file correctly.

I've taken that and changed it a little. Now if you save MP games, it creates a saved game in the NetServ folder. That's the folder we use to launch MP. On setup that folder is sent to every player. So we included the saved game (if it exists) as part of that exchange.

My test was that I saved the MP game. The restartMP.sav was created in the NetServ folder. I left the game, copied that folder. I then selected the copy as the scenario for the next game, and it worked!

To those that do not care about the details... MP saved games will be a new folder under the documents/sowx64/scenarios folder. You cannot use the NetServ folder name, as that's the staging area.

As far as the MP error we the 'too much data' etc. errors from the Steam network library. I think we have those beaten as well. Looking at the long initial MP game launch now.

We have a few other improvements coming along nicely. Not sure of an exact date yet, but hopefully soon.

Ligny DLC Is Finally Available

Scourge Of War Waterloo - Ligny is now available.

More famous battles recreated in the SOW engine on remastered maps.

Scenarios covering this battle where the French army under Napoleon attacked the Prussian forces under the command of Field Marshal Blucher.

His Excellency FeldMarschall Blucher promised to engage and hold the French army here for the time necessary. Your corps is in the front line: it is important to hold the line of river Ligne, in order to do this you have to defend the villages and buildings on the left bank of river. The French army must not break our right or we risk to be separated from the Dutch-British Army

Gettysburg DLC

The Gettysburg DLC did not go as planned. Our testing, our planning ignored one major area that is a no go. Can Steam support what we are trying to do. It cannot. I'm not blaming it on anyone but me and our team. We should have caught this and known before we released.

Our plan was to put GB as DLC for WL and WL as DLC for GB. So no matter which path you choose, you can get what you want. We tried to be everything to everyone and it failed miserably. Soon after launch players pointed out these issues and research showed that there was no good solution.

In our testing we were just trying to get everything working. We mostly tested the DLC, as the stand alone game would be the same engine. We got everything working at the last hour. But just did not spend enough time integration testing. Even with all that there are still bugs we missed and it sucks. But all we can do is own up to them and fix them. We cannot move forward until we have the solid base.

Two apps cannot share the same workshop, so all mods would have to be copied and supported in two areas. The same issue comes into play in the game lobby. Although there may be a hack for it, it could get shut down in the future. So GB DLC could not MP against GB stand alone and that's not acceptable.

The only solution that solves these issues is to discontinue the GB DLC, give everyone a refund. I've already requested this from Steam and am waiting to hear back. I cannot shut down the store right now or change it.

We apologize that this happened and we are trying to make it right as quickly as possible. Thank you to everyone who jumped on this and found these issues very quickly.

GB DLC

We just heard back from Steam and the GB DLC is no longer able to be purchased. We've addressed the issues and that they cannot be solved. The same content and remastered game is now available through the GB Standalone product. It really is exactly the same which is what caused so many issues. We promised we'd deliver it as a DLC and we promised that we'd deliver it as a standalone. We did, but we did not take into account how well Steam would handle what we were trying to do. Really, why should they? It was my crazy plan.

We will have the stand alone on sale again if you missed the wargamer sale. But the good news is that you should be able to get a refund for the DLC now. So please do as soon as you can.

Now that this is over we are working on moving forward and fixing any remastered issues.

NOTE that both games use the same engine. They will both get the updates. All future plans to expand features will affect both games.

The really cool thing is that you can also download the original 'classic' version if you want.

Thank you for your patience,
(I always laugh at that as I am not patient and when people say that you really did not have much of a choice)

We've decided that it makes more sense to post our sdk files on github rather than ship with the game.

It's easier to find the files and you can use the source to modify the program to your needs. For the workshop tool there is a ./bin folder that contains the built program.

You do have to have a steam_appid.txt file in order to run the program. That file contains the steam app id of the target file. So for GB, you put in one appid, for WL another. We've also included the two sample files, so it should be pretty easy. It's a very basic program and I think it's based on other examples we've seen.

We also are putting our AI source and our other SDK tools here.
