About This Game

Defiance is a real-time strategy game based on the Terminator: Dark Fate universe that follows the war between humanity and Legion's synthetic intelligent machine network. In the single-player campaign, you take the role of a commander in the Founders faction and guide your army in an attempt to foil Legion's plan to exterminate the last remnants of humanity. In skirmish and multiplayer modes, play as three very diverse factions: Founders, Legion and Resistance.

Take control of an army carried over from mission to mission on a series of large strategic maps. Make decisions about unit placement, battle tactics and abilities so that you just don’t survive but become the leader of resistance against the machines. Hone your skills and military expertise by replaying and achieving the best possible outcomes.

Features

Campaign
•   Start humanity’s resistance against the machines by surviving engagements with Legion and rallying others to your cause. In the post-Judgement Day world, the greatest threats may not come from the machines but rather from other human survivors.
•   Traverse various dangerous locals, find additional allies and supplies and navigate the brutal differences between competing human factions.
•   Engage in complex, realistic battles where your tactical decisions are vital to your survival and ultimate victory. Use a variety of military equipment, vehicles and ammunition types in your battles against the enemy. Recruit and train new units, assign new skills and acquire new weapons and equipment to continue the resistance.
•   Your battlefield tactics and choices have deep consequences. Your resources are limited and you must protect your army. Weapons of war receive damage through a modular component damage system where armour characteristics, component malfunctions and hull structure all affect if your troops survive.
•   Recruit others to your cause and grow your army. Mix and match the composition of your troops to fit your preferred battle tactics. Use infantry units, heavy armoured military vehicles, plasma cannon technology, drones and other flying units and even human skirmishers to achieve victory.
•   Use the battlefield to your advantage! Physics-based building demolition lets you generate a realistic set of tactical consequences, especially in urban areas.
•   Test your skills in online multiplayer matches. Fight against real-life human opponents in 1v1, 2v1, and 2v2 battles.

After the machines took over, a new force is rising to challenge the dominance of Legion. Known as The Movement, this faction consists of survivors, civilians, and former local militia who have banded together to fight back against the relentless onslaught of the machine army. Led by the formidable Jessica Kidd, The Movement aims to unite the scattered survivors and reclaim their freedom. She is a strong leader trying to bring the survivors together.

The members of The Movement rely on their resourcefulness and resilience to wage war against Legion. They make use of salvaged weapons and vehicles, retrofitting trucks, vans, buses, and more with armor and formidable weaponry. This diverse arsenal allows them to mount a formidable resistance against the machines that threaten their existence.

The Movement encompasses various specialized infantry units, each with unique skills and capabilities. Let's take a closer look at some of them.

Guerrillas
(https://clan.akamai.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/6def8ae3535334dbf76f66ddfc38753a046504fb.jpg)

The Guerrillas form an infantry squad of six highly trained individuals. Unlike the common militia, they possess superior Close Quarters Combat (CQC) abilities, enhanced health, and exceptional accuracy. These skilled fighters have undergone intensive tactical and weapons training, making them a force to be reckoned with. As they advance, Guerrillas gain access to powerful abilities such as utilizing remote explosives and landing from a helicopter on ropes. Upgrades enable them to improve their weaponry, increase ammo capacity, and expand their ranks.

Technicians
(https://clan.akamai.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/bbdc6911f2b829ea33d495d0d9b0ce4c82964e60.jpg)

Technicians serve as a vital part of The Movement's infrastructure. These clever handymen are responsible for driving and maintaining all Movement vehicles, including heavy ones. As part of the agile aggression doctrine of The Movement, each technician crew has been trained to direct airstrikes from Movement aircraft, further enhancing their combat capabilities. With advancements, Technicians gain the ability to perform various explosive-related tasks. Upgrades enable them to crew heavy vehicles, detect and disarm enemy mines, set different types of mines, and strategically plant remote explosives in the batteries and reactors of disabled but intact large Terminators, ready to detonate at a later time.

A notable asset within The Movement's arsenal is the Armoured Passenger Trailer.

Initially a regular heavy transport semi-trailer rig, this vehicle can carry up to 22 troops at a time. However, with the skillful enhancements performed by The Movement technicians, it can be transformed into a mobile stronghold. The trailer can be detached and utilized as an emplacement, providing a sturdy defensive position for the faction. Upgrades allow for the installation of various weapons and enhanced armor, bolstering its defensive capabilities.

As The Movement fights for survival and liberation, their determination and resourcefulness shine through. Led by the indomitable Jessica Kidd, this faction brings together resilient survivors to wage a desperate war against Legion.

The Founders stand apart from the Movement, boasting superior organisation and a heavily armed force. As the remnants of the U.S. military, they have access to upgraded military equipment, vehicles, and an arsenal of weapons that surpasses that of their counterparts. With their enhanced resources and strategic prowess, the Founders pose a formidable challenge to Legion's reign of terror.

Within the ranks of the Founders, various specialised units exist, each honed for specific combat roles. Let's delve into a few examples.

Snipers
(https://clan.akamai.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/294db5b35d0eda1044caa2769cc46cb372dd3785.jpg)

The backbone of the Founders' forces, standard infantry squads consist of seven highly versatile combat units. Equipped to engage both light and heavy enemy units, these squads serve as the universal combat backbone of the faction. Upgrades offer options such as improved weaponry and expanded ammo capacity. With these enhancements, the standard infantry squads become even more formidable in battle.
Just like other units in the game, the Founders’ units can undergo training and improvement to unlock their unique special abilities. This allows players to further tailor their strategies and maximise the potential of their forces. Infantry within the Founders can undergo a range of upgrades to further enhance their combat effectiveness. These upgrades include improved body armour, providing increased survivability and reduced speed. Today, we delve deep into the terrifying Terminator units that serve as the backbone of this formidable faction.

Rev6-Terminators
Meet the dread-inducing Rev6-Terminators, a squad of three fast-moving humanoid models. These cutting-edge machines are earlier versions of the endoskeletons of the Rev-9 models seen in the movie, with rudiments of biodesign and composite materials in the design of Rev-6.
The Rev6-Terminators are versatile and formidable combatants, capable of utilizing any type of infantry weapon. Their agility allows them to effortlessly maneuver through buildings, fences, and certain walls, bypassing obstacles with ease. Although expensive to field, their rarity on the battlefield only amplifies their fearsome reputation. With a wide range of abilities and the potential for upgrades, the Rev6-Terminators strike fear into the hearts of their human adversaries.

Armed with light cannons and rocket launchers, including guided missiles, Spiderbots rain down destruction upon their targets.
The Spiderbots' devastating firepower and strategic abilities make them a force to be reckoned with.

In Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, the struggle for humanity's existence intensifies, so you might want to be ready if things get out of hand. Your units will develop as the game goes on, growing more powerful and adaptable, giving you the tools you need to combat even the most tenacious mechanical enemies.

Evolve your arsenal, elevate your chances: the Abrams tank.

The renowned M1 Abrams tank - the backbone of the Founders' defence - is at the centre of this update. This tank develops into a distinctive force with each upgrade, bringing with it a fresh set of advantages and difficulties in fending off the unrelenting attack of the machines. Every advancement has its own trade-offs and advantages thanks to the wide range of improvements.

Witness the M1 Abrams tank's growth as it receives its initial round of modifications. This upgrade attempts to improve its capabilities and prepare it for future challenges.

The initial arsenal boost

The biggest drawback is its subpar tank armour, which may be remedied by installing additional armour upgrades and an active protection system.

Enhanced firepower and adaptation

Outfitted with Carbon armour, this advanced defensive layer amplifies protection against most damage types, though energy damage remains an exception.

Masterful defence, precision offence

This blend of cage armour and ceramic plates, enhanced with ceramic armour, provides exceptional defence against energy and cumulative harm.

Upgrade your troops, arm your soldiers, and demonstrate that humanity's resolve is unbreakable, even in the face of merciless machines. In Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, keep fighting.

Use the Movement units to unleash enhanced strength

In Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, the Movement introduces a new upgrading system for its units in the never-ending struggle against the machine insurrection. Prepare for improved firepower, strengthened armour, and strategic adaptability that will redefine the battlefield and swing the balance of victory.

Revolutionising your arsenal
The mighty units of the Movement are at the centre of this metamorphosis, each adapting to better battle the advancing AI menace. The Movement is reinventing mobility and firepower through thoughtful engineering and repurposing.

Heavy trailer - towed carnage
(https://clan.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/4258da65c0326e4c62dd29f1011b80d2429ed9bb.png)

The Heavy Trailer is a towed heavy armament platform that houses a 120mm gun within an armoured turret. This weapon was inspired by rediscovered army cannons, which were then installed on a towable platform for improved mobility. The platform must be stabilised after movement utilising support devices for best precision.

Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance Demo Feedback analysis & our next steps plan
Tue, October 24, 2023

We firstly wanted to express our gratitude to everyone who was able to download and use the demo last week. For us, it has been a huge success seeing so many individuals playing and enjoying the demo. Moreover, it gave us the opportunity to collect a lot of feedback that we will use to improve the game.

The demo missions only offered a glimpse of what to expect, which might not have given you the best representation of how action-packed and exciting this game is. However, we hope this piqued your interest and that you're looking forward to playing more upon the release.

Today we wanted to share with you some of the things we learned from the demo feedback and our plans for the future to make the game better before it is released.

Story and script
Some players found the initial demo missions to be somewhat scripted. These early missions were designed to introduce players to the game's story, but we want to assure you that, starting from Mission 3, you'll encounter more open missions with RPG elements. You'll have the freedom to make your own decisions and shape the story as you progress. Additionally, we're exploring options to allow players to skip early missions, especially for those who have already played them in the demo.

Cutscenes
One of the strengths of Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance is its deep narrative-driven gameplay, which immerses players in the storytelling. The cutscenes in the early missions help you become fully engaged in the single-player campaign. However, if you're craving more action, you can jump into the skirmish mode!

Defensive nature of the missions
We are aware that the first three missions have a defensive nature, and since they are the introductory ones they don't represent the actual mission structure through the rest of the game. Consider these missions as opportunities to learn the game's mechanics and familiarise yourself with the game world. It's the beginning of the game and it lays the groundwork for what's to come.

Tutorials
We've noticed that many players struggled with the basic mechanics. To address this, we are adding in additional tutorial information that can be accessed, which helps teach the basics of unit control.

Performance
We understand that some of you have experienced performance issues, and we are actively optimising the game. While we are working on these optimizations, we recommend always checking the system requirements for a smoother gameplay experience in the meantime.

Interface
We've observed player confusion regarding vehicle identification, especially distinguishing between allied and abandoned vehicles. To address this, we're planning to implement player units and vehicles, enemy units and friendly AI controlled units.

We want to express our gratitude for the valuable feedback you've provided. It's instrumental in helping us enhance the game before release. Stay tuned for more exciting updates ahead!

Hi everyone,

There is a new Terminator update available. This should fix some issues related to the new two maps that some players have been experiencing.

Here is the small Changelog:
    • On the Canal map, some buildings that were impossible to enter have been fixed. The rest of such buildings act as decorations - their design has been slightly changed to make this more obvious.
    • On the Island map, a building where squads could descend under the landscape has been fixed.
    • On the Island map, path issues on some stairs have been fixed.
    • In the Nueva Tortuga mission, the difficulty of the duel with the squad of furies has been reduced.
    • Increased the number of slots in the last reinforcement of the Final mission (Galveston) so that the player can call all of their units.

Questions Answered on the ?We Are Legion? DLC

Hi there. I?m Mark, the Senior Producer on Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance. So here we are, a few weeks out from the release of the first major DLC. We are releasing ?We Are Legion? on the 10th December and are all very excited about getting it out to you all to play.

I wanted to answer some of the questions that players in the community have been asking about the new DLC. I find that it's a fine balance of giving information, but not wanting to spoil the story or the experience. As the new DLC is story based, in the same vein of the first T-Force campaign, I would still want players to have surprises and shocks as they play. So, I will do my best not to give too much away (in the knowledge that I?m sure there will be streamers out there that will stream the game before you?ve played it - do try to avoid spoilers).

Here we go:

Why a Machine focussed DLC?
As we have said, the new DLC is going to be Legion based, with you playing the side of the Machines. Why did we choose this, rather than just continuing with the story in the main game? We saw a lot of community comments early in the game's life-cycle about ?Wouldn?t it be great to play as the Machines!?, and early on decided that we would like to provide that too, but to an extreme. So, the path of the first DLC was formed.

Will there be more human campaigns?
Yes indeed. The plan is, as always, to see the journey from the first game story through to where we see the future war in the Dark Fate movie, with the Resistance fighting Rev 7?s & 8?s (and getting their asses kicked), but eventually, getting to a point where they are hopefully ?winning the war?. This will see more advanced human tech and equipment (hovering drop ships, augmented resistance fighters like Grace, etc), and more advanced Legion units (Rev 7?s splitting themselves and morphing bladed weapons and tentacles).
We plan continuing the story of Alex Church as he helps bring the Resistance together, as well as bringing in other forces to join, from both internal (and external) of the US.
I guess the question is also, ?Will there be more ?Legion focussed? campaigns??. I can answer that by saying, if you enjoy ?We Are Legion?, then there would definitely be the option of more similar campaigns in the future. If everybody hates it, then maybe not.

Are we getting new Legion Units?
This is the most asked question since the DLC was announced. Well, there are new units in the game, but these are primarily given to other factions (mainly the Integrators, as many sharp eyed players may have seen, in the gameplay reveal, the Integrators are sporting new weapon platforms).
(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/694e586c0cc46a794530cf73403c5471b14955c7.png)Integrator Armored Carrier with Legion plasma weapon

(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/8abd2fd77c05a1b1795ef9e92bbbd6206ee1fbf3.png)Integrator Platform: A Legion Hunter Platform, converted to manual control and mounted on a semi-trailer wheel chassis

Legion however are getting a whole upgrade on how the army management works, as well as full customisation for all the units.

This means that you will be able to not only customize the weapons on your units (and I mean, heavily customize weapons, with a greater array of weapons being attached to units and vehicles that did not support them in the original game, as well as units being armed with different weapons at the same time).

You will also be able to upgrade and customize many elements of your various units, by researching and ?buying? new features. These can be added onto your reinforcement units.

We also have ?blueprints?. Blueprints are like ?production templates?, and allow customized units to be added to the reinforcement roster, with these new unit versions to be fielded during re-inforcement or within the core of your Legion army.
Each unit has a number of slots that can be upgraded.

(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/aa33cd173bb55ccf2e94e90791ecc372ac07094b.png)New Legion Army customization screen

So, upgraded legs, for increased speed, upgraded torsos for increased armor protection, updated vision chips for accuracy, etc. There is a restricted number of upgrades allowed per variant, so you can create specific units for specific jobs.

You may have a Rev blueprint type with increased speed and rate of fire for speedy assaults, but another Rev type that is the normal speed, but has higher armor, damage and accuracy, and carries two variants of machine guns, for a slower but more powerful follow up unit!

Not only can you upgrade units like this, but you will be able to assign additional abilities to units to make them ?something else?. For example, a drone could have the ability to drop smoke grenades, making a very unique, speedy unit perfect for smoke cover. Or a legion tank can be created with an artillery-caliber gun (155mm), capable of demolishing any human fortification. Or even a spider with a self-destruct ability to explode its reactor, making it a useful bomb when damaged.

(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/a773296fa70c27b10ab64079817851e36bdbe2fa.png)Legion Artillery: Multi-Barrel Plasma Cannon. Significantly higher rate of fire than basic artillery, but less range and damage.

(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/1f4cc16fe1de1f4bb704049a491a24e08ec701bd.png)Legion Tank Weapon Customisation: Heavy rotary 30mm cannons. This weapon turns your tank into a mobile grinder capable of grinding both infantry and not heavily armored vehicles

(https://clan.fastly.steamstatic.com/images//41646712/6202293c4535d8ebf9090b8e6199e38502886c12.png)Legion Tank Weapon Customisation: Heavy 155mm cannons. The most powerful high-explosive weapon, capable of destroying any fortification

As you can see, you will be able to tinker with your army to produce something unique to your needs and strategies.

In conclusion, we?re thrilled to share insights about the upcoming ?We Are Legion? DLC for Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, set to launch on December 10th. We hope this peek into the new features and campaign elements has sparked your excitement.
But this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for Part 2, where I, Mark, will be back to answer even more of your burning questions. Your feedback and curiosity drive our development, and we?re eager to engage with you further. Until then, keep an eye out for more updates as we count down to the release.

Questions Answered on the ?We Are Legion? DLC

Hi there. I?m Mark, the Senior Producer on Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance and here?s the second part of Dev Diary #1

Does this campaign follow the T-Force Story, or is it separate?
Yes it does follow the events that occurred in the main game (which is why, anybody who has completed the first story may get more out of it than if you haven?t finished the main story, though we do give enough ?backstory? for any players starting the DLC without completing the main game).
We see the ongoing story from a different perspective, and we hopefully answer a few questions that were remaining from the first story too. (Did somebody say Prototype?)
And will we see any returning characters from the main game? Well, that would be telling?.. (but yes, we do!).

Is the new Campaign set in the same locations as the first campaign?
As the story is continuing, we do begin in some very familiar locations. A lot of the new story does occur around the southern US states but as anybody would have seen in the announcement trailer and free wallpaper, we also are moving to some other locations in the US too, that are outside of the initial US map we provided.

Are there any new Multiplayer or Skirmish Maps with the DLC?
For the DLC, there won?t be additional maps given for Skirmish or MP. But, as we move into the new year, we will continue adding campaign maps into the Skirmish and Multiplayer lists as we have done through 2024. So, expect to see maps from the DLC appear in Skirmish and MP updates throughout 2025.
There are also some new features that will also find their way eventually into Skirmish & Multiplayer. For example, the army customisation that I mentioned above may appear in some form (setting up your army before a battle!).

Is there new music?
There have been new, Legion themed tracks produced. There are 12 new tracks in the DLC, to get you into the ?Legion vibe?.

What were the difficulties with coming up with characters for the machines when they have been mostly "Shoot first ask questions never" throughout the franchise?
This was definitely a challenge. We were aware that if the whole campaign was an emotionless machine speaking to you in binary, it may become frustrating. So, there are a couple of ?human? elements injected into the story, alongside Legion. So whilst you are ?Playing Legion?, as we?ve seen in the first game, there are times when Legion will call upon human factions to help their cause (Chihuahua for example, or the occasional Founder!! (no spoilers)). So, missions will not just be Legion speaking to you like an angry answer machine.

I hope that you have many more questions and we would love to answer them. So, if you want to learn more, there is a strong community on the official discord channel where I?m always about answering your questions (unless Marketing sends a kill-bot after me to shut me up).

Questions Answered on the ?We Are Legion? DLC

Hello, Mark here again (Senior Producer on the game), back with the next Developer Diary for Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, with the new ?We Are Legion? DLC just a few weeks away from release. As you can imagine, we are all busy polishing the various missions, and very excited to almost be at the point where you can play the new levels.

The first diary last month answered a number of questions that some of the community posed, and this one follows up with further answers to even more questions.

So, let?s get hear some of the questions you asked.

I loved the challenge, playing as the ?underdog? with T-Force, vs Legion. How will the DLC make playing Legion challenging with them being ?realistically? more powerful than other factions? Playing as Legion and not just relying on numbers or technical superpower
Well, there are times where you do get that feeling of ?over whelming the humans? with sheer numbers of forces, especially on the easier difficulty levels. Playing on the lowest difficulty level, I find that there is an element of more traditional ?group and attack in force? RTS tactics. This does change on the higher difficulty settings though.
But, even with a large, powerful Legion force, there are more advanced human adversaries that Legion fight against. You have probably seen from the shared playthrough of Mission 3 that there is a mission where you are attacking an Integrator camp, with their more advanced weaponry. And now, after Galveston, the Founders have more advanced weaponry (as you saw through the base game with basic vehicles being upgraded with plasma cannons and similar). So, even if you are fighting humans, their tech has been upgraded for a more difficult fight.

How will the units be transferred from mission to mission? Will there be supply factors as per the base game, or something else? What factors will influence the ?Reserve? points during missions?
The player has a small core army that is taken from mission to mission in a Carrier. This can be customized and changed between missions. Alongside this, there are the research abilities and the blueprints functionality that I explained in the last dev diary.
There are also Production units that Legion will provide at given points during a battle, depending on certain criteria. These are gained from ?energy? that you gain from performing various mission objectives. So for example, if you capture an Integrator power center, you may be given 5000 units to purchase more Legion reinforcements during the battle.

Will the new Legion campaign be similarly linear as the base one or more open ended with different possible endgame outcomes?
The original campaign had a few branches and decisions that ultimately impacted on the final few battles, especially with the final battle at Galveston, dictating which ally forces you received.
There are less branching opportunities in ?We Are Legion? when it comes to campaign choices. There are some decisions that you will make that impact the individual missions but not impact later missions.
There is still the whole new research and upgrade unit options that ultimately gives a different gameplay feel depending on your army upgrade decisions, that may have a similar impact later in the game, similar to how in the first campaign, army characters surviving (or not) had an impact later (Big Bob, Kondo, etc).

Which new things do you (devs) find most exciting in the DLC?
I am personally excited about finally answering some elements of the story that were set up in the first campaign. I read a lot (well, all) of the community discussions and it?s great seeing players questioning character motives, what discovered tech was, what are the motives of the Integrators, what the huge prototypes discovered in the game may mean. So, it?s exciting from a story point of view to be able to answer some of those questions and to build on the lore of the Dark Fate Universe.

I have a question regarding the DLC trailer. Who are Legion fighting near the Lincoln monument? Do they have anything to do with the founders in Texas? How big is the founder's faction if they fight in both Texas and Washington? Is the founders leader we know the only leader of the faction or are there others? Does the DLC take place before the main campaign or is it something like a continuation?
The forces seen in the DLC trailer are Founder units. The lore that was written for the Founders was more detailed and in depth than what was seen in the original campaign. We have a history written (that I am sure we?ll share in an upcoming diary) about how the founders came to be, where they?re based, and what their fundamental motives are. I know that their background showed that they were actually based in the North East of the US, and the Southern forces were outposts as they spread into the south. So, perhaps, we haven?t met the main force of Founders just yet!
And as for the Founder leader (Actual) that you meet in the first campaign, he isn?t the only leader. And maybe, just maybe, we may answer some questions about him in the new DLC too!

Will the Integrators be the ones to help send the super soldier (Grace in the movie) to the past?
My take on it is that the ?Resistance? that is starting to form from the first game is a coming together of all the factions of humanity, fighting back against Legion. And it?s likely this Resistance that ultimately sends Grace back to help Dani Ramos in the movie (a Resistance that is led in part by Dani Ramos in the movie). So I guess there is still the question, do the Integrators help within the Resistance? Well, we shall have to see.

Can a Legion tank be armed with 2 rail guns in the DLC?
The rail gun is not available to attach to a Legion tank in the DLC. Sorry.

Are we going to see Balzano in the new DLC? I would like to know more about the misadventures of that character.
There are returning characters from the first campaign in the new ?We Are Legion? DLC. I can confirm though, that Balzano, unfortunately, is not one of them.

How do you approach exploring Legion as a Character?
This was one of the most challenging parts of the new story, peeking behind the curtain of the ?Big Bad?. Legion is written to be very logical, methodical, machine-like. However, we did think that a whole campaign playing as that logical entity may not be as exciting as it could be, so, as I mentioned in the earlier diary, we have introduced some human element to the story. As well as not always playing as the Legion Command core, but elements of it, so there is more of a ?dialogue? available. I?d like to say more, but, you know, spoilers?

Well, we are close to the release and so you will hopefully be playing ?We Are Legion? very soon. As I mentioned before, I am always reading comments and feedback on the official discord channel, and will always try to answer your questions where I can. So please do join us there. Until the next time.

Hi everybody. Mark here again, Senior Producer on Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance. Looking at my watch, we are only hours away from the release of the new DLC, ?We Are Legion?. I cannot tell you how excited I am for it to be released so that you can play as Legion, and control its machine hordes against humanity!

https://youtu.be/TDel7taDs2w

As mentioned in an earlier Dev Diary, the storyline in ?We Are Legion? follows on from the story in the main game. So, I?m aware that there may be a bunch of players who haven?t completed the full campaign, with Alex Church and T-Force. As the DLC picks up threads from that story, I?ve decided that this Dev Diary is going to be a short story recap of the first campaign, so that, if you have completed it, there is a quick refresh for your memory, and if you haven?t completed the first campaign, this will catch you up (though, I would always suggest finishing the story in the main campaign to get the most out of the new DLC).

And of course, there will be spoilers below.

The game begins in Atlanta, one month after Judgment Day in the Dark Fate timeline. The city is destroyed, and Legion?s machine forces are overwhelming the last remnants of the US military. A police officer, Officer Stevens, takes it upon himself to save some surviving civilians, and in doing so, help steer the remnants of the army in a retreat. At the end of this prequel mission, Stevens is brought into the remnants of the army by a high ranking Military officer, who informs Stevens that ?the government, the president, everyone, has gone?, and that they must build something new (more from this military officer later).

We next see Stevens 10 years later, in the fight against Legion. Now a Major in the Founders force, a faction composed of the remnants of the US military. Major Stevens is bringing Lieutenant Alex Church (our main protagonist) to a Founder?s outpost for one of his first commanding roles. What follows includes a Legion convoy with human prisoners, Church making the decision to return to the Founder?s base, Haven, with the prisoners, and a subsequent attack by Legion, with Haven base ultimately being lost.

This leaves Church and his small team of Founder survivors cast into the wasteland, with Legion hot on their trail. With manpower low, the team, nicknamed ?T-Force?, start to make an allegiances with The Movement, made up of a militia from the civilian survivors who have banded together to fight back against the Machines.

During this period, T-Force also meets ?The Integrators?, a cult of humans that worship all things technology, to the point of speaking and acting like machines. They see the way of the Machine to be the true way forwards. As a faction, they scavenge technology and produce hi-tech weaponry and equipment, often splicing human and Legion tech together to make hybrid weapons and vehicles. Partly nomadic, there are Integrator settlements scattered around the south of the US.

T-Force?s fight continues, alongside The Movement through New Mexico, and into Mexico itself, to take on the Cartel gangs who seem to be working with Legion, providing ?slaves? and humans for the Machines, for an unknown purpose. After destroying the Cartel stronghold at Chihuahua, Mexico, and helping a slave uprising there, T-Force return to the US, to Texas, helping the inhabitants of Vega against Marauder gangs and onto Oklahoma City, the ?Meat Grinder?, where the remnants of a Founders force that had been decimated in Oklahoma City exist. A huge battle ensues against Legion, who has a factory base that must be destroyed.

Once Oklahoma City has been cleared of Legion, T-Force head to Fort Worth, Texas, where they discover unsettling reports about humans being ?harvested? and new Legion technological advancements at a huge Legion research and production facility at Galveston, Texas.

After a mission to Mount Taylor, where Church discovers human prisoners that have been tortured and studied, and in many cases, skinned alive to help create a new form of ?Infiltrator? unit, an early attempt to replicate a human, Church returns to the Founders to impart all the information on technology and human harvesting that they have discovered.

The Founders is led by Actual, the Military Officer from the very first mission, who has helped form the Founders. Very interested in the information about the technology, he brings Church and T-Force back into the Founders and begins to formulate a plan to destroy the production facility at Galveston.

Preparing to take on Legion at Galveston, T-Force approaches the Integrators for support. The integrators offer a mission to Church, to infiltrate the city of Midlands, Texas to capture some unknown technology. Reports of Legion forces in Midlands acting strangely prove correct, as Church finds Legion units fighting each other for some strange reason.

In the heart of Midlands, Church discovers ?The Prototype?, a huge, spider-like monstrosity of a machine that seems to pre-date Judgment Day, and is not considered to be part of Legion's forces. Finally destroying this Prototype, and fighting off hordes of Legion units that attack Midland now that the Prototype has been destroyed, the Integrators come in and take the data and technology from the Prototype, and leave for their settlement.

Church makes the decision to infiltrate the Integrator settlement at Taos, and steal the new technology that seems to make Legion forces fight against each other. Helped by his Movement allies, Church is able to steal this technology, that the Integrators have labelled ?Digital Storm?, Church leaves the Integrator settlement (after a fight) and, with the initial help of the Founders, moves to Galveston to try to destroy the Galveston facility.

During the battle of Galveston, Church unleashes ?Digital Storm?, which turns Legion units nearby to fight against other Legion units. During the battle, Actual, the leader of the Founders, focuses on gaining access to the new Legion technology, rather than, as Church believed was the plan, to destroy it.

As the battle of Galveston rages, once Actual has the technology he wanted, he takes the new technology, and leaves Church and T-Force high and dry, to fend for themselves against the continuing horde of Legion.

T-Force only manages to survive by various allies from earlier in the campaign appearing to help in resisting the Legion forces. With the help of these allies, Church and T-Force turn the battle into a victory, and flood and destroy the Legion facility. The battle of Galveston is won.
Church, now standing alone from the Founders once more, sees that the only way forwards is to unite the various factions of humanity, to resist against Legion. To perhaps form? a Resistance.

So, what of the Digital Storm, a radiation pulse weapon that was discovered by the Integrators, and now held by Church? Where did it come from, who were its creators?
And what of the Integrators, betrayed by Church, technology stolen from them and their settlement recovering from a fight with T-Force

These unknown threads are where we start the new We Are Legion campaign. But from Legion's perspective.

We hope you enjoy bringing some pain to humanity!

Dev Diary - A look at the upcoming update
Fri, 11 April 2025

Welcome back to the Resistance!

It is time for an information dump on some upcoming updates and new content for the game. Check out information on the soon to be released Army Management Screen for Skirmish and Multiplayer, as well as some new bits of information on the upcoming Conquest Mode and some player questions answered too.

Skirmish and Multiplayer Army Management Update
It?s the Mid 2020?s, when in Terminator: Dark Fate, we are told that the Machines will rise up. Are we now entering the period of Machine Rule? Is the world on the brink yet? Well, one thing we are on the brink of is the new update for the game, that sees army customisation for Skirmish and Multiplayer introduced.

Next week, we are releasing the new Army Management tool for Skirmish and Multiplayer games. This allows you to create new army presets, customising units and squads that can then be used either in Single Player Skirmish, or when you go head to head with other players.

The new Army Management tool has the same customisation seen in the main campaign, allowing you to add new weapons, armor and engine upgrades to vehicles, and to add additional weapons and abilities to infantry units.

Customised units become ?presets? within your army roster, that can be called during reinforcement. There is a set amount of ?preset points? within each army to balance the amount of customised units you can field, keeping the balance of armies fair.

Either duplicate an existing Army set up and customise that duplicated version, or create a new customised army from scratch.

Each new customised unit has its own new points cost. So, crank up a unit to the max, it may become twice as expensive as its base unit. For example, in the images below, there are 2 sets of Rangers units. The first is the default, that costs 800 points, the second, a rangers squad with an additional Laser Sniper Rifle and a full suite of additional abilities (Bullet Rain, Powerlifter, Marathon Runner, Chameleon and EMP Devices) that costs 2180 points.
So there is a direct balance between cost and enhanced abilities.
But it does allow you to hone various units to maximise their battlefield potential.

Each new preset can be called just once during a battle, but quickly duplicating presets in the Army Management Screen allows multiple versions of a unit to be easily created.

And fear not, the base, default version of a unit can be called upon during reinforcement as many times as you wish, so running out of unit types if you haven?t created multiple presets of each won?t happen.

The Movement also is improved with this new Army Management screen as it now allows you to pre-set up tractor and trailer combinations, so trying to hurriedly link up a tractor and trailer during a multiplayer game is no longer an issue. The example below shows a customised Tractor Truck, with a Heavy Platform already connected (an additional 400 points for the additional Mounted Minigun and Junk Armor on the customised Truck preset) Selecting the Tractor or Truck would automatically select the connected unit too.

It is also possible to set up passengers within presets, so if your tactic is to deploy troops quickly using vehicles you can pre-load them into vehicles to quickly call them up.

We have found that this new Army Management system opens a whole new dimension to Skirmish and Multiplayer, allowing a much more varied array of vehicles and units at your disposal and we are really interested in seeing some of the custom armies that you create.

Some Visions from the Future!
The next big release on the horizon is the new Conquest Mode. I wanted to drop some more nuggets of information about it here, so here are 3 new facts about it:

1) There is a new helicopter appearing in the Conquest Mode. Although not a troop carrier, it will be cheaper and have a full range of strike capabilities.

2) The United Federation of Marauders will emerge as a new united faction. Those disparate marauder gangs will band together, to become an even greater threat to the Resistance's existence.

3) The Cartel playing both sides? If you play your cards right, you may be able to have Cartel Templars join your Resistance, if you can overthrow some local Cartel factions.

Finally for this diary, I asked the community (on discord) for some questions that they wanted answers, so here are some that I randomly took:

Community Questions:
These questions were posed by players on the official Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance discord channel. Why not join, and you can ask me directly.

How will the tech from Galveston affect the Resistance soldier equipment and vehicle customization, can the dev sneak peak a bit of info about it?
is there a change we go to Europe and Asia and does legion have any present there
(from discord user: NQIMNyannn)

The plan is that in the Campaign DLC, there will be new enhancements, abilities and units that will be directly influenced by the tech gained at Galveston (the end of the first campaign). We are looking at enhanced humans, and the first use of humans attempting to harness the Legion tech discovered there on their vehicles.

Release date on Conquest DLC?
(from discord user: Diabolos)

I can?t give the official date at the moment as release windows can change, but the current plan is to have it released during Summer 2025. There will also be a Closed Beta released prior to release so if you watch out for announcements, you may be able to get an early look at it in progress.

Are you planning on adding different types of environment? maybe a map with snow or a mission in the ocean with ships?
(from discord user: krankSIE)

Well, we have mentioned that the new Campaign planned for the end of the year will see Church and the Resistance head up in to Canada. Expect some more extreme environments, and how would Legion units perform in snow?

Will there be other nation / remnants of, or factions not yet seen?
(from discord user: Nikita)

The plan is to introduce some elements of other nations in future campaigns. Hopefully I can drop some more information on this in later info dumps.

So, prepare for the new Army Management Screen update that will be available next week (currently playable on an Open Beta branch on Steam) and I will see you on the future battlefield!

Good luck.

The Spring Update for Skirmish and Multiplayer is out now.

In case you missed it, we released a Dev Diary a few days ago (above post) that went in-depth on today?s update. The main highlight is a new feature: the Army Management tool, which allows you to create your own unit and army presets for Skirmish and Multiplayer modes.

This gives you more freedom to set up and customize your reinforcements, just like in the main campaign. You can add new weapons, armor, and engine upgrades to vehicles, as well as additional weapons and abilities to infantry units.

We hope you enjoy this new addition. Let us know what you think. Below you?ll find the full changelog for the update, have fun and enjoy the game.

Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance - Uprising | Dev Diary #1
Mon, 23 June 2025

With Lieutenant Church heading north in search of new recruits and allies for the growing Resistance, the task of holding the heartlands has fallen to you, the player, charged with managing our forces and standing firm against the relentless advance of Legion?s hordes.

And so, here we stand, preparing to face the challenge of our newest addition: Terminator: Dark Fate ? Defiance: Uprising (https://store.steampowered.com/app/3650450/Terminator_Dark_Fate__Defiance_Uprising/)!

The new Conquest Mode DLC is being released very soon, and so I thought it would be a good time to give a bit more detail on some of the new quality of life features that have been introduced.

Faction Icons
We released a screenshot of the world map last month. I wanted to show you the updated version with new faction icons now in each sector that they own. To be honest, this was due to a number of color blind people who noted they couldn?t tell the difference between some of the factions. I think you?d agree, the new faction icons make that much easier to see.

(Conquest Map showing new faction icons)

No Saves for a Rogue Like Experience
So, the team made the decision for the Uprising Conquest Mode to remove the Save Game function during most battles.

There are still some autosaves during a few ?critical? missions when objectives have been met,  but these are slightly longer, harder missions. For most battles, there is no save, as battles should be somewhat shorter, with missions being won or lost in 15-20 minutes.

There will always be an autosave BEFORE the mission, which is made every time you press DEPLOY in the mission briefing screen.

However, as there are many elements that are RANDOM, when you re-load a mission from that save, you will likely get a different experience. Your spawn point(s) may be different, the enemy will attack from a different direction and encounters may be different. Even skipping a couple of days may mean that the mission will be somewhat different.

This has been designed to create the Rogue Like experience that the Conquest Mode gives you.

(Mission Briefing screen showing Deploy - and is that a new map!!)

Retreat

With the more Rogue Like game flow of the mode, we have provided a RETREAT option during battles which allows you to extract your troops immediately.

This allows you to sneak into sectors and ?steal? trophies and scavenge vehicles, without starting a large-scale battle. You can also help to weaken an enemy (if you can?t destroy it in one go), as all destroyed units will temporarily reduce your opponents strength (reserves). When attacking the sector again, the enemy will be weaker. And if that sector is cut off from its key point, then its ?strength? will not be replenished.

So, retreat becomes a very useful feature to sneak, and not be overwhelmed.

(Retreat option is found on the Menu. There is still honor in leaving, to fight another day)

Evacuation & Re-deployment
Throughout the missions in the Uprising Conquest Mode, the EXIT area is always available, allowing players to extract units from the mission battle, back to the Army Reserves screen.

This then allows you to re-supply, heal (if you have spare troops available), repair and refuel vehicles. It then allows you to re-deploy them if you have a slot remaining for that unit type.

One-Button Extraction
When you have gained a victory on the battle, when you have achieved the objective, whether that is domination, defended a point for a given amount of time, or depleted the opponents so they retreat, a VICTORY button appears, allowing for a quick extraction if you wish.

This finishes the map, and your units are returned to the Army Management screen.

So, you do not have to move all your units to the EXIT area to extract them.

You can use the VICTORY extraction whenever you like once the battle has completed, so you may want to spend some time scavenging for vehicles and weapons, get drivers into vehicles, picked up weapons, and then press VICTORY to extract with your new found loot.

I have found playing the Mode, that with Extraction abilities, you can use tank drivers and other specialised drivers to drive vehicles off the map, remove the driver out of the vehicle, and then re-deploy them without a vehicle, to search and drive other vehicles off the map.

Abandoned Vehicle Markers
Most maps will have abandoned vehicles, and as these are discovered, you are informed by an officer, and a marker is placed on the map. This is very useful when salvaging the battlefield after a fight.

(https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXd1jD6fPR9OfWWL5RIw8osSiPJkRBbEc4y5i4W9euT_GYvnTp4W1FoWZ1Hnsz3CW9F-v7wzJcwXE0XxhxlQADIomTm4UL0ettx4cUIqEXf0qz7mngqquU3i3jNJBtAPn6Dgh64H?key=Dlsp6tpY0obIP7IUITTY6A)
(An abandoned vehicle marked on the map. An Integrators Plasma Howitzer!)

And Finally
There will be more information dropping about the Uprising Conquest mode before it is released, so please do watch out. And I am always available to answer your questions, when I can, on the official discord channel here (https://discord.gg/u3YY7tnU8D).

And finally, I want to leave the last word to Major Stevens, who returns for the new Uprising Conquest Mode. Here is some dialogue of his straight from the game:

?The mission's in crisis in the heartlands. Legion, barbaric Marauders, Cartel gangs, those blasted machine cultist Integrators - friends are hard to come by, but we got a few left still. We'll need to rally with every last one of em, soldier, 'cos I ain't ready to say die to the machine. Not yet.?

So, good luck on the battlefield soldier, the Uprising is almost here!

Uprising - Dev Diary #2
Tue, 8 July 2025

With the release of the new Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance: Uprising Conquest Mode DLC on the near horizon, we thought it would be a good time to journey back to the world of Terminator for more intel on what to expect.

Save Game System Update
In the last dev diary, we mentioned the team's decision to limit save functionality in Uprising to reinforce the roguelike feel. However, following player feedback, we've adjusted our approach.

New save options include:

  - Quick Save Option: Can now be enabled via custom difficulty settings. It's off by default to preserve the roguelike experience, but available for those who prefer flexibility.
  - Autosaves: Now trigger every 20 minutes during all missions (not just long or complex ones).
  - Victory Saves: Completing a mission will now autosave, letting you exit and return later to collect trophies or salvage vehicles.

We hope these updates strike a better balance between challenge and player choice.

Following the Games Story
Although Uprising delivers a more open, roguelike experience, it still follows the storyline we began in the main game and continued with the We Are Legion DLC last year.

In this DLC, you take on the role of an officer tasked with helping build and sustain the rising Resistance, battling against the various factions entrenched in the heartlands of the United States.

Your commanding officer is a returning character - Major Stevens, last seen assisting Lt. Church in the final mission of the base game. From a former military base captured from the Marauders in Alabama, you'll manage and expand your army, fighting across multiple sectors to reclaim territory from Legion, the Marauders, and the Cartel. You'll also support your Movement allies and decide whether to befriend or oppose the enigmatic Integrators.

(The Uprising begins, capturing the Alabama base from the Marauders)

Sectors and the Army Store

Each sector you capture provides unique units to your Army Store. For example:

  - Capture the Island Sector near your initial base to unlock Bradley tanks.

  - Take control of the Integrator base on the new Riverside Village map in the north to unlock Integrator Dozers and Technicals.

The composition of your army is shaped not only by what you capture, but by the route you take across the map.

And of course, any vehicles and weapons abandoned on the battlefield can be salvaged for use in your growing force.

Allied Sectors

You can only attack sectors adjacent to ones you already control. However, forming an alliance with a factionsuch as the Movement allows you to use their territory as a bridge to reach new areas.

In one of my playthroughs, for example, this let me link up with Movement forces stationed near the Legions main base, opening a path for a full-scale attack with my army.

Legion Deep Raids

Legion can deploy airborne forces using the same carrier technology introduced in the We Are Legion DLC. This enables them to launch Deep Raids, striking even sectors fully surrounded by friendly territory.

That means your main base or even secondary bases can come under sudden assault. Defending these becomes critical to surviving the machine onslaught.

Quality of Life improvements
We've made several QoL upgrades across the DLC and the base game. For example:

  - Training upgrades are now visually indicated directly on unit icons within the army management screen.

  -   - You'll see a small upgrade available icon like this one on the Templarios unit or the Heavy Weapons Squad below.

(Templarios have an available upgrade)

Further Updates
When the DLC releases, development doesn't stop there. Conquest Mode's open-ended design gives us plenty of room to expand.

Look forward to:

  - New unit types

  - Additional mission types

  - Emerging world events in future updates and DLCs

And Finally
The Uprising DLC is nearly here. Keep an eye out for more info dropping soon and join the discussion on our official Discord! I'm always there, ready to answer your questions.

And once again, I'll leave the last words to Major Stevens, returning to lead the fight in Uprising:

"Divided the machine has us beat. But together there is a way forward if we choose to resist!".

So, see you on the battlefield soldier very soon, the Uprising is upon us!

This DLC introduces a full sandbox-style, rogue-like campaign that puts you in command of the Resistance across 22 dynamic sectors in the post-apocalyptic United States. With no scripted paths and multiple factions acting on their own, every decision you make, every battle you win or lose, shapes the course of the war.

You?ll clash with the unpredictable Marauders, who thrive in chaos and strike when sectors are left isolated. Face off against the relentless war machine of Legion, always expanding and always hunting. Watch for the Cartel, a ruthless paramilitary force with its own agenda. Support the struggling Movement, your last true allies in this war-torn world. And deal with the enigmatic Integrators, whose advanced tech may be the key to turning the tide, if you can gain their trust.

Raid Marauder strongholds, scavenge vehicles, and recruit new troops to reinforce your army. From high-level planning on the sector map to intense tactical combat on the ground, Uprising hands you full control of the fight ahead.
