In section 5.2.3 h. and 5.2.4 j. of the game documentation for version 1.0.10, it states that "Number of different unit types over one" gives +1/2 AF/DF respectively.
I tested what counts as a "unit type" and it includes every type except Corps HQ. The exact list is: Tank/Panzer, Infantry/Rifle, Airborne, Cavalry, Mechanized Infantry, Motorized Infantry, Marine, Mountain, Artillery, Ski, Special Forces, Motorized Supply, Air HQs, Naval HQs, Army HQs, and Army Group HQs (I didn't test "Targets" or High Command HQs).
This list seems too broad. I would make the following changes:
1. HQs shouldn't count at all.
2. Motorized Supply shouldn't count.
3. All Infantry type units should be counted as one type (Infantry/Rifle, Airborne, Marine, Mountain. Ski could be included as Infantry or kept as a separate unit type). I can see leaving Airborne as a separate unit type if they perform a paradrop, but not if they fight as ground Infantry.
4. Mechanized Infantry, Motorized Infantry, and Calvary probably should be included together as one "Mobile Infantry" category. Or combine Mechanized Infantry and Tank/Panzer into one "Armored" category and Motorized Infantry and Cavalry as "Mobile Infantry".
The way the different unit types are coded now makes it extremely easy to get the +1/2 combat modifier for attacks, and these changes would make for a more realistic combined arms bonus.

Hi Rocketman,
I looked at each one of your comments. Will need to study them more this weekend. I like the unit type idea.
Thanks,
Ron

No problem Ron.
One more thought on Ski troops. They should be counted as regular infantry in all weather except snow. In snow they should be counted as a separate unit type. Don't know how difficult that would be to code, but it seems more realistic.

Agree on ski troops in snow. Also was wondering about cavalry in woods or swamps. The Russians made great use of both of these cases. Giving them an advantage will cause more historical use in the game.
Will have to look at how hard to code. At least the code change will need to be made in only one place, and that is easy to find.
