Both 100 years old and still full of fire
The woman who flew a thousand planes
Mary Ellis delivered Spitfires and bombers to the front line during World War Two. Mary is one of the last surviving pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), she was honoured at a surprise party to celebrate her 100th birthday at Sandown Airport, Isle of Wight, on 2nd February 2017. She recalled flying "about 1,000 aeroplanes" during the war, including some 400 Spitfires and 47 Wellington bombers, which she flew solo.
