The more you play, the better you will become as you start to understand the game mechanics.
What time is "1845 Eastern Time North America. -5.0 hr GMT"?

Our first battle ended very quickly, we started as far away from the objective as possible. While heading North to the objective, the enemy was detected to our east, so some of our divisions engaged. I was the Northern most force, so continued towards the objective. When I could 'see' the objective, the enemy already held it of course.
When I started to engage, and felt semi confident we could take it Brian was assisting as well. The game ended aburuptly. We figured either a time limit on the objective or point limit ended it on us.
The next game Rick tried to omit any limitations like that. This time we totally routed the AI. This one didn't end on it's own, so we just all agreed to resign. There was only small pockets of enemy troops scattered on the field. I used that program you gave us last week to view, it is a great way to get a feel for the Battle! On my laptop (working today) right now, so don't have access to it.

DeucheDodge (not sure the spelling we called him Double D :roker ) was the commander in both battles
-
The 2nd Battle, this time we started approximately equal distance from the objective.

DeutscheDoge (Double D) ordered us to straight to the objective ordering myself and Brian to go on the Northern flank. For some reason the AI general sent a division way North!

By the time we arrived on the field the others were already inflicting pain on the enemy forces. The lost division was making it's way down from the North

With the main forces handily defeated, the force coming from the North was easily dealt with.

Possibly the AI was trying to hide a deep flank maneuver, on the theory (or stat calc, or randomly chosen set of ideas or whatever) that the central thrust would hold ground at the center position long enough for the errant division to arrive and smash your left flank.
The problem from your description and the map would then be:
1.) the central objective area didn't have any good defensive area except the fort to stand and hold for maneuvering (and y'all got to the fort first);
2.) you took at least one division maybe more in a shallower arc northward, accomplishing much the same thing first. So the enemy's force was smacked and you weren't really in much of a fight by the time the final division arrived, thus effectively able to outnumber and envelop it, too.
