It was great fun for me as well & a significant learning experience! As I said as I was ducking out I wish I could make the AAR to discuss some of the things I saw. I also wish I would have saved the replay so I could see how the battle developed. I believe I heard Stardog say we won just as I disconnected from TS.

For my part I got bogged down on the left flank. I was supposed to approach the town on the far western flank unfortunately just as I was deploying my troops 2 battalions of cavalry hit my left rear flank. It was my 1st time dealing with cavalry! I boxed my formations & was able to drive them off but my brigade was split. I received orders to attack the cavalry. I really didnt know how to do that so instead stood my ground hoping to anchor the left flank which I was mostly successful at until 5 battalion of infantry came marching down the road to me. Now I was between a rock & a hard spot. The cavalry I swear was operated by a human & not AI because of its timing. It seemed like every time I tried to maneuver they charged. Finally when I deployed my men in line to meet the approaching infantry they charged again & for the 1st time did grievous damage catching my line in the left flank.

I recieved orders to witdraw to the rest of the group & fought a fighting retreat back up the hill harried by cavalry & infantry.

All in all I rely enjoyed myself & now I'm hooked!

BTW sorry panthera I realized about 3/4 of the way through the game I wasnt sending you messages. I didnt know after you clicked on the name you had to press enter to select it. Consequently I think Stardog got most of the messages meant for you. Im not totally sure even now that I have the messaging system completely figured out.
For example towards the end of the game about every 5 sec I had the same message pop up. It did it non stop for the last 20min of the game. Message attached,

Hi Longknife

I sent you the replay. Follow the instructions.

The courier: There is a whole section on it in the manual (p69). For mp games communicating with humans all you need to do is

1. Hit "message recipient" tab
Select recipient by double click. Make sure their name appears on the right hand side section.

2. Hit "Free text" tab
Type your message. Press enter. The message moves to the right hand side. If you do not hit enter then you will send a blank message.

3. Hit "Send message" button on the bottom right.

The message you attached. It is an intercepted enemy message from one of their couriers by you.

I eventually started using the OOB after sending bad messages to StarDog. Opened the OOB, selected the recpient, then there is a courier icon on the top right. That opens your message addressed to that person.

Longknife I was also getting 'those' messages every 5 seconds near the end of the battle, eventually they went away.

Hi guys,

About the mass of AI messages some players said they were getting towards the end of the battle - were these actually popping up and OPENING a new message received window, or were they just "clicks" indicating a message received that players were then opening to see what they were? Or do people leave the received message window open so those messages keep showing up?

I am trying to work out what actually was going on because the KS Mod stops those messages from "popping up" - you still get them but the player has to open them manually.

Hi Mr Digby

It happened to me while the message was open. New ones would overwrite it.

Also when I closed down the window then new messages would pop up.

I did think that the KS mod had fixed the "message spamming" issue.

Correct, this does not happen with the KS Mod; we fixed it.

I recommend you play with the message window closed.

If you do that and find that AI messages still "force" the window open, let me know. But I doubt it will happen.

I was in a KS MP game tonight and had dozens of AI messages arrive but they all stay "closed" - you hear the click of a message arriving but know you can safely ignore it.

They were "Popping Up" on the screen over and over, everytime I would hit X to close.

Thanks brah!

I just watched it. It was amazing to see how much was going on & seeing "the big picture" of the battle. Having the limited view of HITS is really very cool & really emphasizes the fog of war.
Seeing the boxes moving around really didnt give a good impression of the carnage on the western flank.

Cavalry hits my unprotected flank as I form up into line for the approaching infantry.

I really enjoyed myself & am looking forward to the next one!

PS: How do you turn off the UI for screen shots?

Gettysburg allows you to cycle thru several UI settings, one of which was to remove the toolbar and other interface items fully, so screenshots were easier, but Waterloo doesn't allow that.

I think you need to go into the options settings while in a game, there you'll find a checkbox to disable message pop-ups. I think this may be one of the settings the KS set-up notes recommend as I never see these annoying "courier spam" messages from the AI.

This is a shame. Why remove it? Doesn't make sense.

It is not mentioned in the KS setup post.

I wasn't sure if that note was in the instructions or not, I guess I was mistaken.

The whole GUI was changed for Waterloo for localised language purposes. Many people think this was a huge error by Norbsoft. It led to all kinds of complex repercussions. Many veteran gamers think the Gettysburg interface worked fine and there was no need to change. My GUI was the new software used and it has many shortcomings...

So do Free text courier messages still pop up, if you unchecked that?
Title: Re: SOW Waterloo Multiplayer 10/12/16
Post by: Mr. Digby on December 12, 2016, 05:22:21 PM
I have it unchecked and never see them. Make sure you close the message window after use, don't leave it open. They'll still flash up in an open window.

The KS Mod is written so they don't pop up, so I am very puzzled as to why you guys are seeing them.

Peaceful town when we arrived from the North, battle has begun to our East

(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag371/cmurphy625/screen0002_zps94qptluj.png) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/cmurphy625/media/screen0002_zps94qptluj.png.html)

Then all hell broke loose when the enemy attacked us in force from the North West.

(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag371/cmurphy625/screen0010_zpsrbq2huhs.png) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/cmurphy625/media/screen0010_zpsrbq2huhs.png.html)

Next with reinforcements from Panzerde coming on from the North, we were able to clear that side.

(http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/ag371/cmurphy625/screen0011_zps3vuooccz.png) (http://s1373.photobucket.com/user/cmurphy625/media/screen0011_zps3vuooccz.png.html)

Reinforcing the South West Flank later, but the battle was pretty much over by then, the enemy was spent.

Nice AAR Tuna. It was quite tough for a long while. It looked like we would get overwhelmed. Good job Panzerde pushed hard.

It was a fun battle, although I think Longknife had his hands full when he was attacked by both infantry and cavalry.

I was ordered to take the cavalry division south and scout out the town of Santo Domingo, our objective. I arrived on the wooded hill to the north of town to find it apparently empty. I sent my chasseur brigade down among the buildings to investigate:

I was ordered south-east out of the empty town to cover the right flank of the corps. Riding up a low ridge I reached the crest to find a dense complex of pinewoods and walled olive groves on the far slope. Austrian infantry were moving upon the down on the lower slopes. I ordered my two horse batteries to unlimber and open fire:

Over a period of about 40 minutes the enemy infantry division in the olive groves made several determined attacks, trying to drive me from my hilltop. All were beaten back by canister or counter-charges:

Unfortunately this enemy attack completely occupied my division for the whole battle and despite calls for cavalry support from my fellow officers I was unable to withdraw from my hill as doing so would have allowed the enemy to sweep into Santo Domingo from the SE as well as from the north.

Later in the action I looked behind me and was shocked to see the hill to the north of town by which we had approached about 90 minutes earlier, swarming with Austrian troops:

I think the right choice was made by having you engage the enemy to our SE. If you had not then the enemy could have possibly flanked us and caused all manner of problems.

Nice AAR Mr Digby :)
