Title: SB Pro Moddable?
Post by: Asid on February 17, 2015, 12:57:13 PM
I am starting this topic to encourage constructive dialogue concerning the modding of Steel Beasts Pro (PE).

Desire:
Many of us would like more playable vehicles in SB to allow us to simulate a wider theatre of operations. This desire also extends to 3D objects. The modding does not extend to the simulation engine.

Problem:
eSim games have limited resources and contractual commitments which prevents them from fulfilling some of our wishes/desires.

Potential solution:
The creation of a group whose sole purpose would be to create the aforementioned mods. This group would be made up of volunteers. They would liaise closely with eSim games and follow strict procedures and guidelines from eSims. Once there is a viable mod it can be beta tested by the "Mod" group and later put out as a "beta" for the wider SB community.

The benefits:
1. No financial cost to eSim Games.
2. No manpower diverted by eSim Games.
3. The community can contribute which could foster an improved social environment. An increased sense of pride and achievement would also follow the successful completion of a mod.
4. The SB community is comprised of many individuals who have excellent knowledge of the subject matter.
5. The SB community has been around for many years as have many of the members so interest in the sim is unlikely to "drop off" like what happens to most other games/sims.
6. Modding could potentially increase the customer base as some people enjoy that aspect of a game/sim.
7. An increase in the customer base because some vehicles could be introduced that were not playable or even exist. This could interest potential customers.
8. eSim Games may have the opportunity to recruit members of the "Mod group" to work part/full time on the main simulation. This is interesting as eSim would have a "pool" of potential employees who have knowledge of SB and have produced proven SB products.
9. Modders have been known to "think out of the box" which could produce interesting solutions to problems.
10. eSim would have total control of the production and distribution.
11. eSim would have the option to use the mods in the Pro version for it's military customers further enhancing the product.

Potential issues:
1. Update? What about updating the Mod?
2. eSim Games would have to check/authorise the mods so would require time allocation from them.
3. eSim would have to provide a level of support/tools to the modders.

Please discuss.

Regards

Urm...

Honest words from me.

"This sounds awesome!"

I think that this could be the way. I really think that this game needs many things fixed, and fans could do things that Esim games is not interested about.

Sadly I don't have any modding experience but I would like to learn thought. However I'm unsure of how much I could be able to contribute. Hopefully at least a little.

Agreed and this would be awesome.

I also do not have any experience in this area, and would nto be able to contribute, othe than to maybe help with vehicles I have been on like M1IP, M1A1, M1A2, M113, M577, M88, M3A2, Humvee multiple versions, and LMTV.

The implementation of things in software however, I would be of no help at all.  :(

Contributions would be entirely voluntary. There are many ways to help/contribute:
1. Gathering of credible/certifiable information/data
2. 3D artwork
3. Documentation
4. Testing
etc....

Well I can help with gathering information, documentation, and testing...not sure about anything else. In short, I'd be happy to do what I can to benefit the community.

This is just a topic to promote coversation and constructive dialogue. There are many ways to help and i believe there would be no shortage of volunteers.
