Order of Battle goes global

Posted: Wednesday, June 01, 2016 by Alberto Casulini

Order of Battle fans, we have big news for you. The game previously known as Order of Battle: Pacific is being restructured into Order of Battle: World War II, a bigger project with a wider scope and the goal of featuring multiple fronts of World War II.

Order of Battle: Pacific is going to be split into three different products:
·         Order of Battle: World War II, featuring the bootcamp missions and the first mission of each DLC.
·         The Order of Battle: U.S. Pacific DLC, featuring the American Pacific campaign.
·         The Order of Battle: Rising Sun DLC, featuring the Japanese Pacific campaign.

Now hold on to your seats! Order of Battle WORLD WAR II will be available to everyone for free! It contains the bootcamp scenarios plus the first scenario of every DLC (including future ones), and they are completely free. You will be able to try the game, play several scenarios and decide if you’d like to buy the DLCs.

Important: if you own Order of Battle: Pacific you’ll be given free keys for the two DLCs, Rising Sun and U.S. Pacific, plus any other DLC you already own!

That’s not all: in order to unlock the fully-featured editor and every single faction in multiplayer only a single DLC purchase is needed!

Ok, here is an example of what you can expect from this system.

Below is the campaign screen that you’ll see if you’re a newcomer to the series and you have never purchased the base game. You have immediate access to the bootcamp campaign (at the top) and all of the other campaigns (which are DLCs) are grayed out but you can still click on them!

Greetings all!

I just downloaded Order of Battle WII from Steam which as Asid stated it´s free.  After playing the "Bootcamp" tutorial I decided to buy the OoB Winter War campaign. I haven´t started it yet but Iam sure it will be alot of fun. You start off with the Finnland Army against Russia.

The game is similar to "Panzer Corps" but with added flavour, ships, airplanes and other goodies. It´s one of those wargames that are fast to learn and play, but also has you hooked on keeping on playing and playing till you finish the mission. To me these are great ingridients for a game and the balance in OoB show´s this pretty good.  The drawback for some is that it´s not to accurate historicaly, it´s not a 100% blueprint of what happend in real life.  Personaly I don´t mind this, actualy I like it because you have the chance to change the outcome.  I sometimes find it boring to fight a fight that you know you have no chance beacuse in real life that was how it ended.  A example of this was "Hearts of Iron III" or any of it´s saga.  You would play a country that in real life never enterd the war, thus you would not have enough resources or manpower to progress you´r country and put up some resistances against the enemy.  In a way it was alot of work and HD space´s for the dev´s and you for nothing. The idea is cool that you could pick any country but theré wasent much that you could do with it beacuse the game base was historical.  I have nothing against that, it´s just that it´s not my cup of tea always.

Another thing that I like about OoB and Batlle of the Bulge from Slithering is that unit´s  don´t spend a bunch of time firering at each other.  As much as I like Flashpoint Campaigns, I find that units take alot of hit´s on each other thus making game play very long between turns.  When you have a bunch of unit´s all over the map this can be a burden, making the campaign and/or mission last for ever!

Enough of my chatter LOL. The game play´s smoothly on W10, has nice graphics and I find it fun to play, and fun dose not mean easy Iam sure of that.  The only bad thing I have found for now is that multiplayer is not working quite well for now with the latetest patch. The MP connection just keep´s on looking for a server for ever so you have to make a hard reset in order to get out of the screen.  It´s a bummer beacuse I wanted to get you guys online with Oob and have some fun.  Iam sure they wont take long to fix this as the dev´s seem to be very active with new content and upcoming campaigns.

You can find the free Order of Battle base pack at Steam for download. Download is about 1GB.  I can not paste the link beacuse for some reason Microsoft Edge or the DOW site dose not do anything when I click the above Icon´s. My guess it´s more a Edge problem.  I would guess the link provided by Asid on the first post is the same link to the game.

Red reporting from the cold winter war land´s! "Soldier, get me a hot tea on the run"!

Care and hope some of you will try out OoB if you find you like this kind of gener.

Steam Link: http://store.steampowered.com/app/312450/

Thanks for the feedback. I think that this is a great way to introduce people to a game. You get the engine for free. You also get a scenario or 2. If you like it then you can buy add-ons.  Command Ops 2 by Panther games does the same...I suggest you try that http://www.panthergames.com/

Let us know what you think of OOB once you have had a few hours/victories/defeats under your belt.

Oh and I friend Jhay plays this quite a bit.

Glad to see that other people are still playing these quasi-board games.  I have really enjoyed OoB and have been playing through the new scenarios.  Thanks Asid, for helping to publicize these games.
(And Asid, I have been lurking off the east coast of Scotland, and I notice that you have NOT come out....)

Order of Battle: the new Specialization System

As you may know we are working on a major update for Order of Battle: World War II. This patch is accompanying the new exciting campaign pack: Blitzkrieg, finally introduces the Wehrmacht to Order of Battle! It also introduces a number of free features and today we’re going to talk of one of them.

The new campaign specialization system builds upon the old system, making it deeper and more fun, varied and interesting. The current system is simple: at the end of some scenarios you simply pick one between two choices, and you’ll continue with your campaign.

After the update this is going to change. You’ll gain a number of specialization points by completing a mission (5 every time you complete a mission successfully) and a varying number by completing a secondary objective.

Whilst in the campaign screen you’ll be able to spend your hard-earned points in a number of specializations – some will have prerequisites, such as having to unlock certain specializations, or having reached a certain date. These specializations allow you to customize your core army by obtaining special bonuses and unlocking new special abilities, and give even more flavor to certain units.

This allows far more freedom and variety than the previous system. We believe it will help with making the game more varied and offering more replayability.

Also, there are now more specializations than before: all the old campaigns have been adapted to the new system and they now have more specializations than before!

This new system is an exciting opportunity, and we believe it will nicely complement another big feature we have in store for the next update. But we’ll talk of that next week

Initial thought´s. Not to be mistaken as a proper AAR.

Last night I playid my first mission of the Winter War campaign in a medium setting. I recomend you start off in a low setting at first.  Not that it´s to difficult to go about but I got beat on turn 19 out of 20  ;D

I had alot of fun and I like how it works! As in all games this type you have to think your moves real well.  I did make some mistakes beacuse there are things that I didn´t really know how they worked, I do now though  ;)

Great fun and a nice game! Happy to have it!

Last week we spoke of the specialization system coming with next patch, but today we’re going to talk of something different, something new.

Order of Battle: World War II will have a Import core army tool, allowing linked campaigns in which players can carry over their core armies. The idea is to link together campaigns which will form a larger mega campaign. At first it’ll be only Morning Sun linked with Rising Sun, but we plan to make use of this future as we release more campaigns (for instance, we’ll certainly link the upcoming Blitzkrieg with any future-and-yet-unannounced-but-certainly-coming campaign featuring the Wehrmacht).

How does it work? It’s quite simple. At any point during a campaign (although it’s best if you do it once the campaign has been completed) you’ll be able to select the button Export core from your campaign -> Core army screen. You can then save your Core army.

At that point, start the next campaign. You’ll be prompted with this screen, asking if you intend to import a Core army.

Click yes, and you’ll be able to select which one you’d like to import.

Select the one you want to use, and there you go! Now you’ll start with a set of units carried over from your previous campaign. They are not free, though! You still have to buy them like you’d buy a new unit, but they retain the name and 30% of the experience they had, as if they had been destroyed. That is, naturally, for balance purposes.

That would be all regarding the Import tool, but there’s something else we’d like to show you today. Players who own the Winter War DLC will have access to a unique division in Blitzkrieg, after they research the Waffen SS specialization: I’m talking of the SS Wiking division, a completely unique division unlike any other in the Wehrmacht.

Order of Battle: Blitzkrieg - Interview with the developers!

Hello everyone! With the release of Order of Battle: Blitzkrieg drawing near (tomorrow!) we decided to ask a few questions to the developers from the Artistocrats.

We hope youi'll find it interesting.

With Blitzkrieg, Order of Battle visits the main European theatre for the first time. Germany in 1939-1941 was waging a type of warfare which was completely different from the one fought in the Pacific or in Finland during the Winter War. How is it represented in game? How is this campaign different strategy wise?

Blitzkrieg is the first purely offensive campaign of the game - at least as far as overal scenario objectives are concerned. And while armoured warfare played a smaller role in the Pacific theatre, the harsh terrain of Finland and the Sino-Japanese conflicts, the Germans practically invented it.

This is immediately visible by the large variety of different tank types and Ausführungen that are available in the 1.5 years of war covered by this campaign. Besides the Panzer I, II, III and IV series the Germans have access to Czech 38(t) tanks and even captured French equipment through the Beutepanzer specialization.

On a tactical level, many scenarios are designed entirely with armoured pincer attacks in mind. Players will find that using historical large scale encirclements - using Panzer units to spearhead the attacks - will provide the best way to assure victory. This is largely achieved by the simple-yet-effective supply system of the Order of Battle series, but is further emphasized by primary and secondary objectives. In particular during the invasion of the Soviet Union players will have a hard time grinding through the massive Soviet armies frontally. By instead pushing aggressively around the flanks of these forces and eventually closing the encirclement, huge amounts of units will be trapped and easily wiped out.

Blitzkrieg adds a multitude of new units (over 200!). Many vehicles – do you think that Blitzkrieg expands on the concept of combined arms and mechanized warfare in Order of Battle? How?

While the German Panzers take much of the glory, the only way to assure that their advance does not grind to a halt is by providing selective and effective artillery and air support. Stuka dive bombers and motorized artillery are essential to preserve the strength of the Panzer arm by breaking enemy strong points and AT positions.

Equally important is the follow up of infantry forces to mob up any remaining resistance and securing the supply lines of the armoured spearhead. The AI is particularly effective at cutting through the player's supply lines, so careless play will quickly cripple the potential firepower and mobility of an isolated Panzer division.

Blitzkrieg doesn’t add only Germany, but many other countries as well. Could you tell us something of their army rosters?

As Order of Battle grows and visits new theatres of war, many units and nations are being added. France and Poland now have a respectable and varied amount of unit types available while the British - already present since the Pacific campaigns - have received further additions to their arsenal.

Besides these, players will encounter many new units when facing the minor Allied nations of World War 2 such as Belgium, Norway, Greece and Yugoslavia.

What about the AI: has it been improved and adapted to the new type of Blitzkrieg warfare?

Besides various general fixes and optimizations of the AI code, specific attention went to retreat mechanics.

Besides strategic retreats in specific scenarios such as the evacuation of Dunkirk and the breakout attempts of encircled Soviet forces during Barbarossa, the AI will now retreat badly damaged units from the front lines. Rather then sticking around indecisively until the player delivers the final blow, these units will now retreat to the rear or attempt to leave the map entirely. This behaviour can even be consciously used by the player to meet the strict time-table of the German offensives: Destroying every single enemy unit is time consuming, and while secondary objective encourage the destruction of enough enemy forces, some can be "allowed" to escape to assure a quicker conclusion of the current battle.

What’s next in the future of Order of Battle? What can you tell us?

Blitzkrieg ends in 1941 with the Battle of Moscow. Needless to say we are not yet done with the Germans! A total of at least 4 more German-oriented campaigns is planned for 2017, including some rather unique content.

Equally important, the long announced - and requested - Skirmish Mode is now the focus of our attention. Without any other major theatre changes coming in the near future we hope to finally find the time to finish this exciting feature in the coming months.

Order of Battle to feature the Kriegsmarine!

Order of Battle returns to its roots with this DLC and it expands to the icy waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, pitting the Kriegsmarine against the might of the Royal Navy and its allies.

Order of Battle: Kriegsmarine features a subject rarely touched upon by other games and never with such level of detail: you will follow the German navy in its years-long campaign to challenge the Allied supremacy of the sea.

This will put you in situations which you’ve never faced before in the Order of Battle. You will fight as the underdog and support land operations, perform convoy-raiding missions, lure enemy ships into deadly ambushes and make extensive use of submarines. Fight through historical and what-if scenarios alike and demonstrate you are the real master of the seas!

The game will feature iconic ships such as the Bismarck and the Scharnhorst, introduces a wide range of submarines, naval bombers, flying boats, gun boats, destroyers, cruisers, and it’ll be even possible to make use of the Graf Zeppelin carrier!

Kriegsmarine will start its beta soon. We are looking for willing and active beta testers to help us finding bugs and give us suggestions. We need your help, so if you’re interested  join the beta. http://www.slitherine.com/beta/cnda.asp?gid=677, This beta will also be the first testing phase of the new skirmish mode, a much-anticipated feature in Order of Battle.

A look at the new features of Order of Battle: Kriegsmarine

Kriegsmarine (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=677) is the upcoming DLC for the Order of Battle series and it covers the German Navy’s efforts to challenge Allied superiority at sea. From the shores of the Baltic to the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean, you will lead a smaller varied fleet of destroyers, cruisers and battleships, submarines, seaplanes tenders and carriers, as well as Marines units specialized in amphibious assaults.

This DLC marks, of course, a return to naval mechanics. The team has put a lot of focus in expanding the naval aspects of the series with Kriegsmarine, and to best represent naval warfare they implemented several new features. Let’s look at them, shall we?

Firing efficiency & Hit avoidance

This new mechanic will completely alter how naval combat is played out in the Order of Battle series. Now both movement and range will play a role in damage calculation.

The mechanics already existing in the game dictate that, in order to maximize your damage output, a ship that moves before firing must keep the same distance between itself and its target at the start of the turn and after the move. Basically, if the range stays the same before and after you move your ship, you will have maximized your firing efficiency as you won’t need to calibrate your guns and present the full broadside to the enemy at all times.

This is now combined with new mechanic: By keeping your ship on the run, you make it harder to hit. The more movement points you spend in a turn, the more hit avoidance you will have, and the enemy will deal less damage to you.

The trick is to try to keep the same range between you and your target when firing, but move as much as you can so that you won’t be a sitting duck! In a larger scale naval battle, the trick is to move as much as possible and outside of the effective range of most enemy warships, while still maintaining the same distance to specific targets for maximum firing efficiency.

New Submarines Mechanics

First off, surfaced submarines are now much harder to spot. Previously, they could be spotted by any surface ship or aircraft as long as they were in visible range. Now, they will only be spotted by adjacent ships: this allows brave submarine captains to take risks and gamble. Surfaced submarines can move at a higher speed to close in on merchant convoys or stalk enemy fleets. On the other hand, while a submerged submarine is slower, it can only be detected by sonar.

We also introduced a limited submersion time: now submarines have a battery which they use when they are submerged. For most submarines, it’ll last 3 turns, although for some later models (like the German XXI) it will last 4. Then, the submarine will have to resurface and recharge the battery for a number of turns.

These new mechanics make submarines way more interactive and interesting to play.

The number to the right indicates the battery duration – how long your submarine is allowed to stay submerged!

Primary & Secondary guns split

We decided to split the primary and secondary armaments for battleships and battlecruisers to more accurately portray these vital ships of the era.

Primary guns can only be fired once every 2 turns. Their range and firepower is far greater, meaning that you want to save that when it’ll truly have a significant impact or when a good target is available. That offers an interesting choice to players and adds depth to naval combat. In addition, the secondary guns armament is often equally effective at close range against smaller enemy ships.

Each ship now feels more unique and specialized as well as historically accurate, and there are big differences between various BB types. For example most BB/BC have destroyer calibre guns (100-128mm) but some like the Yamato are armed with (light) cruiser calibre guns (150mm).

Seaplane tenders

In Kriegsmarine we have an entire new class of units, seaplane tenders.

These allow the German Navy to carry and resupply seaplanes (in fact giving it some sort of “prototype-carrier” capability). While floatplanes and flying boats used to be limited to the reconnaissance role, Kriegsmarine adds new types in the offensive role, including floatplane fighters and (torpedo) bombers.

The ship to the left is the AV Greif: it can carry armed floatplanes (like the Arado AR 196 A-3) and resupply floatplanes and seaplane torpedo bombers (like the Heinkel He 59) alike.
The one to the right is the AV Bussard. It can carry and resupply floatplanes and torpedo bombers!

And more!

Kriegsmarine has a lot more to offer, but we don’t want to give away too much info at once. We’re looking forward to you trying the game and finding all the nice little touches that the Artistocrats left there for you to find. But let’s say bye, for today, with one of my favorite new ships.

Everyone who guesses the name of that ship wins a cookie!

Order of Battle: Kriegsmarine is out!

In Order of Battle: Kriegsmarine you'll brave heavy enemy fire while at the lead of powerful battleships and cruisers - true beasts of steel! You will command silent predators, marvels of German engineering, the U-Boots, in their lethal hunt for Allied convoys. You will build and employ massive new Carriers, platforms from where to launch your newest aircraft, and gain a devastating edge over your enemies.

Kriegsmarine is all of this, and more. Your efforts will decide the fate of the war. Are you up to the task?

The new DLC for the Order of Battle series releases today on our store and on Steam. It features the exploits of the Kriegsmarine, the German Navy, in its effort to fight Allied supremacy at sea. It adds many new units, and it presents players with the intriguing possibility of exploring “what-if” scenarios: what if Germany had developed, built and deployed aircraft carriers? What if Germany had fully executed Plan Z and built the next-generation battleships? You have the choice.

That’s not all! Kriegsmarine is accompanied by several new features which have an effect on naval gameplay in general: new mechanics such as fire efficiency and hit avoidance, new submarine rules, primary and secondary guns for ships, new unit types, a first look at the Skirmish mode, and more! It is truly a massive update.

And if you’re still unconvinced, we’ll stream the game tomorrow on our Twitch channel!

So what are you waiting for? Get Kriegsmarine now, and give us your feedback on the forum!

A patch has been released using the in-game automatic updater. This will fix a number of the main issues introduced since update 5.2.0 (mostly affecting naval maps).

NOTE: Due to a bug in 5.2.0 the game will crash after downloading the update. This is "normal". After manually restarting the game it should correctly be updated to 5.2.2 and a popup with patch notes will appear.

Patch notes:

• A number of bugs fixed that could cause certain scenarios turn freeze when ending a turn
• Objective fixes in Sevastopol, Voronezh and Winterstorm scenarios (Panzerkrieg)
• Resource bonuses set for playing Panzerkrieg scenarios outside of the campaign
• Minor issues fixed with some of the new units (SU-152, Soviet M4 Sherman, Sturer Emil)
• Fixed game crash after (successfully) applying automatic patch

Order of Battle: Sandstorm is coming!

1941. Erwin Rommel is appointed commander of the newly created Deutsches Afrika Korps, with the goal of supporting Italy in their campaign against the Allied forces in North Africa.
It is the beginning of a great military campaign which will show the world the military genius of Rommel, a series of great accomplishments which will earn him the immortal nickname of the Desert Fox.

Order of Battle: Sandstorm (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=727), the new DLC in the Order of Battle series, will let you relive those years.

You will need exceptional strategical ability to succeed in the brand new campaign – one of the longest ever in Order of Battle, 14 scenarios! Beware, you will be outnumbered and time is against you. Deceive your enemy, then outmaneuver and vanquish them before you run out of supplies.

Sandstorm greatly expands the roster of Italy, adding many unique units as well as specializations. It also introduces a brand new terrain type to Order of Battle, Arid, as well as new terrain rules to represent the hazards of fighting in a desert environment (has anyone mentioned sandstorms?).

Sandstorm is currently in development and it’s about to enter Beta. If you would like to follow its development and give us a hand in testing it, please apply for the beta here (http://slitherine.com/beta/cnda.asp?gid=727).

We will show you more of the DLC soon, so stay tuned!

Order of Battle: Sandstorm - A look at the new scenarios

Sandstorm (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=727) is the new upcoming expansion in the Order of Battle series, bringing the game to the sands of North Africa.

We asked the developers to talk of the new campaign and tell us about some of the new scenarios.

Campaign

In 1940 Italy joined World War II on the Axis side. In the same year, an offensive was launched with an aim of defeating the British forces in Egypt. Disaster followed, with a British counterattack where Italian forces were defeated in detail and lost part of their Libyan colony. Germany hastily sent a small blocking force to prevent the loss of all of North Africa and it is here that the player enters!

The Campaign starts with first the German clashes with British and Commonwealth forces over the Cyrenaica region. The Campaign in North Africa was characterized by a high degree of motorization on both sides, leading to dynamic and mobile warfare. This feature is included in the game as well where you will need lots of trucks for your army to keep up with your tanks.

Another characteristic of war in the desert was its dire supply situation. Partly due to delivery across the sea, partly to distances on the ground and of course partly due to enemy action, there was never enough of it for all ambitions. Order of Battle’s supply mechanics shine in this respect and a variety of situations related to supply are a watchword of the Sandstorm Campaign.

Historically Axis forces were defeated and expelled from Africa, but many what-if speculations have arisen since. The Sandstorm Campaign will allow you to explore some of those what-ifs by exploring semi-historical situations without going too much into fiction. But most importantly, based on your success of achieving secondary objectives, the next scenarios could feature significant territorial and tactical changes.

Scenarios

Tobruk

Historical setting:

After the crushing defeat of the Italian army, Rommel arrived in Africa in February 1941. After his troops were unloaded they staged military parade in Tripoli and were immediately sent to front. They were followed by more troops via the same route.

Their task was to establish a defensive line at El Agheila and protect Tripolitania from further British advances. This proved to be unnecessary because the British had outrun their supply capacity and were diverted to Greece to counter incoming attacks there.

At the end of March, Rommel decided to launch probing attacks and since the British had insufficient strength remaining they ordered a retreat. This only motivated Rommel to push even harder disobeying orders and neglecting all supply difficulties.

In a very short time all of Cyrenaica was in Axis hands. All but one harbour - Tobruk.

Scenario description:

Immediately at start of campaign player can fill his core with German and Italian units.

The map itself provides for several routes of advance once the first line is breached and all require use of motorized transportation for Infantry. Your Supply dwindles with time and it is imperative to acquire your opponent’s supply bases in order to keep the offensive going.

Many historical events could repeat themselves, like the blowing of supply bases during the British retreat, capturing General O’Connor, Australian units moving towards Tobruk while the rear-guard is protecting their retreat. Additionally some things could go differently than the historical operation, like the capture of Tobruk.

Since the capture of Tobruk is a secondary objective and is a very challenging one to achieve, the player is allowed to fulfil their primary objectives first before proceeding to secondary ones.

Crusader

Historical setting:

The British plan to relieve Tobruk was to send armoured groups through the desert with an aim to attract Axis armour and defeat it in one big tank battle. Their Infantry was to swing behind the frontier positions, seal it and continue down the road supported by slower infantry tanks. The Tobruk garrison was to break out when circumstances became favourable.

The Movement of the tank groups did not attract Axis armour because Rommel thought it was a faint and an Axis planned attack on Tobruk was just about to start. At this moment British separated their tanks into three columns. One going to Bir el Gubi, other one to Sidi Rezegh and the third one was kept in reserve. Soon enough the fiercest battles emerged around Sidi Rezegh and units from both sides were rushed there, creating a confusing battle with shifting frontlines and layers of enemy units running into each other.

Two things saved the British, Rommel’s idea to turn his armour into the British rear in an attempt to destroy their supply and the intervention of Commander-in-Chief Middle East to relieve the British commander and prevent the British units from retreating. New replacements were poured into battle and the British continued the battle at Sidi Rezegh whilst the Axis were driving deep into their rear.

The Battle of attrition went in favour of Allies, connection with Tobruk was established and Rommel ordered a retreat, leaving frontier garrisons to their fate.

Scenario description:

The player cannot be utterly defeated in this scenario. You can either crush the Allied forces and change history or, if the pressure becomes to strong, you can authorize a strategic withdrawal and fight another day at the Gazala line. This means that this is the spot where the campaign branches before it rejoins again in semi-historical invasion of Malta.

This scenario also has two variant setups depending on whether Tobruk was captured in the previous scenario. If Tobruk is already held by the Axis, then the Allies will not try to relieve it but just to recapture it. This brings different starting positions and a few tricky changes in strategy by the British.

The Scenario itself is intense and demanding with many areas to cover. Will you form a defence line in front of Allies or will you rush into their rear to destroy supply and hamper all of their army? If Allies establish connection to Tobruk, don’t worry, you will get a second chance to nullify their gains but in a tight time limit.

Do you want to feel that you are making an influence on the battlefield? Well this one is for you.

Gazala

Historical setting:

After the see-saw battles of late 1941 and early 1942, the frontline had stabilized at the so-called Gazala Line. Both sides were preparing an attack on the other. Rommel was faster. The Northern sector was heavily defended and the Axis only staged a feint attack there while their main force swept across the desert and outflanked the line to the South.

Finding itself behind Allied static positions and minefields and confronted by armour on the other side, Rommel realized that he needed to shorten his supply routes before proceeding further. This sequence of events is known as the Cauldron battles where the main Axis force resisted British armour with an anti-tank screen while, at the same time, reducing the British 150th Brigade in their rear and clearing extensive minefields for their supply convoys to pass.

When the shortening of their supply route was complete, and British armour was destroyed, the Axis mobile columns hurried towards the Allied supply bases. The Base at Belhamed rail station was blown up whilst Tobruk surrendered! The Capture of fuel at Tobruk allowed the Axis forces to move forward.

Scenario description:

The Allied unit dispositions, including minefields, were made based on historical sources. Rommel’s greatest victory will ask nothing less of you. As long as you avoid heavy defenses on the north momentum can be maintained. The Southern part of the map, as well as the rear, provides more approaches.

The Secondary objectives are lined up in a way to facilitate your path to victory and maintain focus, as well as being historically inspired. Transporting cargo trucks will give you actual supply output to help fight against dwindling supply over time.

Also, besides controlling territory you are tasked to destroy the British Army. But do not worry, if they are cut from their rear this will cause units to abandon heavily dug in positions and make them easier to destroy. Who knows, if you get lucky maybe the Tobruk garrison will surrender to you, Herr General!

Herkules

Historical setting:

This is actually a semi-historical setting because Operation Herkules, the Axis invasion of Malta, was planned and could have happened, but didn’t. The Germans had reservations about it due to heavy losses of Fallschirmjäger on Crete and because a seaborne operation would depend upon the Italians. When Rommel captured stocks of fuel at Tobruk he was eager to continue with his offensive and Operation Herkules was called off.

Scenario description:

This Scenario features airborne and seaborne amphibious landings followed by land combat, while the Regia Marina holds the Royal Navy at bay and on top of this there is a need to control the skies.

But, before the scenario escalates into full scale battle involving all military branches, its elements are introduced gradually and in subsequent phases.

The first phase is the airborne invasion with the task of establishing an operational airfield. The player can select the difficulty of this task. They can aim for more airfields at the same time at the expense of a dispersed and more vulnerable force or they can concentrate on fewer objectives but with stronger force concentration. Higher the risk, higher the reward!

The Second phase includes seaborne landings but, in order for it to start, certain coastal batteries need to be neutralized first. There are several landing places to choose from and it is wise to destroy the coastal batteries covering those approaches.

In the third phase of attack you are to proceed to your objectives whilst at the same time protecting the supply routes of the land forces on the island. The Royal Navy will be alerted by this time and only thing between them and your invasion force is the Regia Marina.

Kasserine Pass

Historical setting:

Tunisia is characterized by mountainous terrain and while those mountains had several passes those that had road and railroad networks were more important than the others.

Kasserine was one such important pass with two rail-lines from the Tunisian coast meeting there before proceeding inland and further, to the Algerian coast.

If the Axis were to destroy the Allied forces in Tunisia, then they needed to get through the Kasserine Pass then break out toward Algerian coast and encircle the Allied armies, leaving them with no major port to resupply.

Logistics and Axis strength at the time was what made such plans impracticable.

Higher levels of command had disagreements about the scope and purpose of forthcoming Axis offensives. Various plans were laid down. A less ambitious one called for the capture of Thala and Sbiba as prerequisites for an attack on Le Kef to disrupt the Allied flank and gain time. A more ambitious plan called for capture of Tebessa as a prerequisite for an attack on Bone at Algerian coast.

In such unclear conditions Rommel tried too much with too little probing along all lines and eventually retreated.

Scenario description:

The objectives in this scenario depict this strategic dilemma.

The Victory objectives are contradictory to one another, meaning you can achieve only one and never both.

Whatever choice you make, it will make a difference in the subsequent scenarios. Will you wait for an Allied attack on the Tunisian bridgehead or bring battle to the enemy? Great ambitions always bring great challenges. Do you have what it takes to become ...Sun Hero?

Order of Battle: Sandstorm - The Italian armed forces

In Sandstorm (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=727), the upcoming new expansion for Order of Battle, the Italian army obviously plays a very important role.

As commander in chief of the Axis forces in North Africa, you will be leading a joint army of German and Italian troops. Today we'll look at some of the new units available to Italy coming with Sandstorm.

Tanks

In the first years of the war, Italian tanks are lightly armored and undergunned to complete with their heavier British and American counter-parts. By bringing some more modern tanks designs into production however, you will have access to a number of effective medium tank types.

- L6/40: While useful for reconnaissance and attacking unprepared infantry positions or lightly armored vehicles, its armament and armor is inadequate for dealing with tanks or entrenched positions.
- M14/41: A minor upgrade over the M13/40 medium tank, but still lacking the armor thickness and gun calibre to compete with all enemy tank types.
- P26/40: The first tank design with decent armour and a capable 75mm gun, roughly comparable with the Panzer IV and M4 Sherman.
- P43 bis: This vehicle forms the pinnacle of Italian tank design, inspired by the German Panther tank and armed with a powerful 90mm anti-tank gun.

Fighters

- CR.42: While maneuverable in dogfighting, this biplane fighter cannot compete with boom-and-zoom attacks by more modern monoplane fighter designs.
- MC.200: In the hands of an experience pilot the Macchi C.200 Saetta is a match for the British Hurricane fighter it will frequently meet over the deserts of North Africa.
- MC.202: With the "Folgore" fighter the Italian Airforce has an excellent fighter design capable of matching enemy aircraft in combat.
- G.55: The "Centauro" is probably one of the best fighter aircraft available to the Axis, with powerful armament and excellent flight characteristics.

Artillery

The Italian Army has access to a large variation of towed and motorized artillery units.

- Obice da 75/18: This light mountain gun can be moved quickly and through difficult terrain, allowing short range artillery support in all environmental situations.
- Semovente da 75/18: Carrying the same gun as above, this self-propelled gun offers good firepower and protection for its crew in a fully enclosed casemate.
- Semovente da 105/25: Effectively a heavier version of the previous SPG, this unit carries a powerful 105mm gun and thicker frontal armour.
- Semovente da 149/40: This machine does not offer much protection to its crew but can keep its distance from the enemy thanks to the powerful 149mm artillery gun.

Regia Marina

The Italian Navy has been expanded in Sandstorm with a ship type of every class to match the enemy fleets in all types of engagements.

- MAS torpedo boat: These fast and light boats are armed with two torpedoes for hit & run attacks against enemy warships, and one machine gun to defend against enemy aircraft.
- Soldati destroyer: Ideally suited for reconnaissance, shielding larger warships from enemy torpedo attacks and engaging enemy ships with its own torpedoes or battery of four 120mm guns.
- Bolzano cruiser: This heavy cruiser is armed with a powerful array of guns, capable of providing fire support during naval battles and coastal attacks.
- Littorio battleship: This class of battleships is the most modern and powerful available to the Italian Navy. It is equipped with impressive primary and secondary gun batteries.

Hotwheels & Bersaglieri

Besides the common lines of unit classes, the Sandstorm campaign also adds a number of more unique units to the game:

- Bersaglieri: These units are composed from above-average recruits and have received intensive physical and marksmanship training. The Bersaglieri form the elite of the Italian infantry arm.
- AS.42 Sahariana: Similar to the transport vehicles of the British "Long Range Desert Group", the low-profile Sahariana reconnaissance vehicle is easily concealed and can track enemy units undetected to strike vulnerable targets at the right time.
- AB 41: Armed with a 20mm autocannon and two machine guns, this reconnaissance vehicles is effective at harassing enemy infantry and light vehicles. It can also be converted to run on railway tracks for even faster but more restricted movement.
- QF 2-pounder Portee: This British truck carries a 2 pounder anti-tank gun in the back. While vulnerable to infantry, air and artillery attack, it does provides a mobile platform to rapidly set up defenses against Axis armor.

Sandstorm has many more new units to offer: we're looking forward to releasing the expansion and hearing your thoughts on them. Until then, stay with us, for we have more stuff to show you!

Victory or Death! Order of Battle: Endsieg has been announced!

The final chapter of the "krieg" trilogy is here: after four years of campaigning the battle-tested Wehrmacht will have to face its hardest challenges in Order of Battle: Endsieg (http://slitherine.com/products/742/details/Order.of.Battle.Endsieg).

The Endsieg campaign, the biggest and longest yet, includes 16 unique scenarios. The story begins right after the Battle of Kursk, where the game provides the option to import a core force from either the Panzerkrieg or Sandstorm campaign.

The first five scenarios are based on the historical 1st Soviet offensive in the Donbass in summer 1943, up to the Leningrad–Novgorod strategic offensive in early 1944. A decisive defeat of the Red Army will eventually allow total victory over the Soviet Union, while failure to do so will turn the campaign away from the Eastern Front and into the Battle of Anzio in Italy.

In the second part of the campaign the player's forces are transferred to the west, where the Allied invasion of Normandy has opened a new front. Initially you'll be forced on the defensive, and you'll be tasked to extract other German forces from the Falaise trap, defeat Allied airborne units in Market-Garden, and defend the city of Aachen and the Huertgenwald against heavy attacks. By reaching a decisive victory in the German Ardennes Offensive in December 1944 the tide of the war can finally be turned again, leading to a set of ultimate battles to destroy the Allied armies once and for all.

Covering the final years of the war, Endsieg offers powerful weapons such as Tiger II heavy tanks, Jagdpanther tank destroyers and Me-262 jetfighters as well as several new specializations. But beware, the enemy has brought many deadly new weapons of their own!

Are you ready to change history?

Order of Battle: Endsieg Campaign Tree

We have prepared something special for you. Endsieg  (http://slitherine.com/products/742/details/Order.of.Battle.Endsieg) has a branching dynamic campaign tree which means that the outcome of battles or managing to fulfill certain optional objectives will affect the campaign later on.

We have drawn an infographic to show you how the system works!

The arrows connecting specific scenarios mean that the result in one scenario affects the other

Order of Battle: Endsieg Units Preview

Take a look at some of the new and powerful units the German War Machine would deploy into the battlefield in Endsieg (http://slitherine.com/products/742/details/Order.of.Battle.Endsieg), the latest chapter in the Order of Battle series!

PzKpfw E-100
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/PzKw_E-100.png)

The Entwicklung Series specialization represents several new tanks in different weight classes and focuses on the standardization of their design. It reduces the cost of the Panther and Tiger II tank units and allows production of the E-100, a virtually indestructible super-heavy tank.

Sturmtiger
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/Sturmtiger.png)

This assault gun is built on the Tiger I chassis and is armed with a 380mm rocket-propelled round. This massive firepower combined with the thick armour of the Tiger design make this unit very effective at smashing enemy fortifications while crippling their morale and combat efficiency

Krupp K5 Railroad Gun
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/283mm_K5.png)

In the battle of Anzio on the Italian front, this 283mm railroad gun will be available to rain death upon the Allied positions. Due to a slow reload the weapon is rather ineffective at destroying enemy units, but its extremely long firing range provides an unprecedented ability to strike strategic targets anywhere on the map.

SdKfz 251 Uhu
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/SdKfz_251_Uhu.png)

The new Vampir Nachtjäger specialization focuses on infra-red light, which is only visible though special sighting devices. It unlocks the SdKfz 251 "Uhu" halftrack, equipped with a powerful IR searchlight to increase the offensive combat effectiveness of all adjacent German tanks.

He 177 Atombomber
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/He177.png)

Through the late-war "Uranprojekt" specialization the Germans gain access to the ultimate weapon: the atomic bomb. While very expensive to produce, a bomber carrying this weapon can evaporate any target on the battlefield.

Me 262 Schwalbe
(http://www.matrixgames.com/amazon/Art/OOB_ES/Me_262.png)

Order of Battle is coming to console!

That's right! You might have heard this already (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koWx-Kh9OVw) but now it's official: Order of Battle is coming to console.

After three years and a half of development, Order of Battle is currently one of the biggest wargames available: thousands of unique units, hundreds of scenarios, many different playable factions, the ability to fight on many fronts of WW2, from the Pacific Ocean to Russia, from Finland to Burma.

We are glad to be able to port this huge game to console. It will be the first wargame of this kind available on console, and it will sport a brand new UI adapted to console gaming.

Order of Battle: World War II will be released on console as a premium game, containing the base game plus all contents from the U.S. Pacific DLC. All other DLCs will be released at the same time as the base game, for a truly staggering amount of content!

Order of Battle: World War II (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=516) will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this spring. Stay tuned for more information!

Order of Battle goes East! Red Star has been announced!

Set in a new theater of war, the new expansion for Order of Battle: World War II puts the player in charge of the Soviet army for the first time.

Red Star (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=813) covers the battles of the Red Army in the years 1938-41.

The campaign starts with the Battle of Lake Khasan (July 29, 1938 – August 11, 1938), the attempted military incursion by the Japanese from Manchukuo, into territory claimed by the Soviet Union. It continues with the conflict of Khalkhin Gol, the decisive battle of the undeclared Soviet-Japanese Border War. Repel the Japanese and expel them from Mongolia!

Then, get transferred to Europe and participate in the Soviet invasion of Poland (as result of the so-called non-aggression pact with Germany). and win the Finnish forces moving your steps in the gelid Winter War!

The last stage of the DLC from summer 1941 deals with the German invasion of the USSR and ends with the battle of Moscow in Dec. 1941.

This expansion is the first of a planned trilogy covering the full extent of WWII from the Soviet point of view. Much like in the Weltkrieg trilogy you will be able to carry over your forces from one campaign to the next, so expect to be able to continue the fight!

Order of Battle: Red Star (http://slitherine.com/products/product.asp?gid=813) is due to release this summer on PC, Mac and Steam. We will be releasing more information on the DLC in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

We are currently looking for beta testers willing to provide us with feedback and criticism on the new campaign. If you would like to take part in it, please sign up here (http://www.slitherine.com/beta/cnda.asp?gid=813)!

Order of Battle: Red Star - The Red Army is coming!

Red Star is the new expansion for Order of Battle, introducing the Soviet Union as a playable faction for the first time.

Many Soviet units had already been introduced by the Winter War DLC, but of course Red Star brings it to a whole new level, adding brand new unique units for the Red Army!

Today we shall have a look at a few of these new units.

1. BT-7 A artillery tank

The fast BT-7 tank was produced in large numbers from 1935. While the standard version had a 45mm gun the specific BT-7 A variant was designed for artillery support, and equipped with a short barreled 76mm gun. Between 1936 and 1938 over 150 BT-7 A tanks were produced, and used against Japan, Finland and in the early stages of Operation Barbarossa 1941.

This provides the player with an reasonably armored self-propelled artillery unit that is much more mobile than the typical towed artillery systems of the Red Army at this point.

2. KV-1 m1940 heavy tank

The heavy tank KV-1 came too late for the Winter War, where only the prototype was tested. After  a shorter series of the early m1939 version the KV-1 m1940 became the main production model, and was the most recent KV-1 version available in summer 1941.

While it was a well-armored tank that came as a nasty surprise for the Wehrmacht early KV-1 tanks had problems with poor visibilty and a weak transmission. Later the player can upgrade to improved models of this tank.

3. 76mm Su 1-12 gun truck

In the 1930ies the Soviet Union made massive efforts to mechanize the Red Army. Increasing numbers of tanks and motorized rifle troops required artillery units able to keep up in battle. An early attempt to solve this problem was to mount a 76mm m1927 howitzer on a GAZ-AAA truck. Produced in low numbers as Su 1-12 the weapon was used in combat against the Japanese. Most of these gun trucks were lost in 1941 though.

While armed with a 76mm gun like the BT-7 A this unit is cheaper, but also more vulnerable.

4. 122mm A-19 towed artillery

The Red Army has bigger calibers in its arsenal, but the long-barreled 122mm gun is still a highly effective gun, and was first used in combat in 1939. Later this type was also modifed for use in self-propelled guns, and finally developed into the D-25 gun used as main armament of the heavy IS-2 tank.

Players now have a choice to use heavier Soviet artillery that packs a bigger punch, or the A-19 gun, which has a better firing range.

5. Komintern prime mover artillery tractor

The Komintern artillery tractor was developed from the unsuccessful T-12 and T-24 tank designs to tow heavier types of artillery. Over 2000 of these were produced from 1935-1941. The rather heavy vehicle is slow and vulnerable, but being fully tracked it can actually perform better in bad weather and heavy terrain than wheeled trucks.

6. GAZ AAA truck with Quadruple Maxim MG anti-air mount

The Maxim MG m1910 was the typical heavy MG used in Russia during World War I, in the Civil War and in World War II. Additionally to the infantry version,  aircraft-mounted and naval variants were developed. In the early 1930ies GAZ trucks were equipped with a quadruple mount of Maxims to provide an early self-propelled anti-air weapon, which was not overly effective, but at least it can provide some cover against air attacks.

7. GAZ MM truck with 25mm anti-air gun 72K

The light AA weapon was used as towed gun from 1940, but later mounted on a GAZ MM truck to get a self propelled version. Heavier towed Soviet anti-air guns were certainly more capable, but less useful in mobile warfare. As the player may find himself struggling with substantial Luftwaffe air operations in 1941 this unit may help him to protect his tanks.

8. Neman R-10 light bomber

Developed as KhAI-5 the aircraft entered service in 1937 as R-10 for use as light bomber and as reconnaissance plane. Ca. 500 aircraft have been produced. The R-10 has been used first in the border battles vs. Japan. Although outdated the R-10 was still in service in summer 1941, and flew combat missions beyond 1942.

This is the first Soviet tactical bomber available for purchase in this game.

9. Suchoi Su-2 light bomber

This more modern light bomber entered service in december 1939 and was build in over 900 pieces. When war broke out against Germany the more capable Il-2 had just entered service, and pilots and groud crews were rather inexperienced to operate the new plane, so the Su-2 still had an important role to fill. The Su-2 suffered heavily in combat 1941 and was increasingly replaced by the IL-2 from 1942.

10. Guards Infantry

Soviet Guards units were established after the costly, but successful Yelnya Offensive in september 1941. In Red Star those guards units are not simply purchased, instead the player can upgrade his experienced infantry units to more capable guards infantry units once he unlocked the required specialisation.

There are  but a few of the new units coming with Red Star!

The Red Army strikes back! Order of Battle: Red Steel has been announced
21 Nov 2019

It is the winter of 1942, and the Red Army is about to turn the tide of World War II.

Order of Battle: Red Steel brings you back to the most pivotal chapter of the war. Take command of the forces of the Soviet Union and push back the Wehrmacht, for the Motherland!

It is the second installment of the "Red" trilogy of DLCs which put you in the shoes (or boots) of generals like Zhukov or Konev. The new campaign starts just when Red Star ended, and those who want can play Red Star and Red Steel in sequence, importing their savegames from one campaign to the next and retaining their core army, unlocked commanders and specializations.

Red Steel has 16 new scenarios. Action begins in January 1942 with Soviet attacks at Staritsa, still not far from Moscow. During the harsh Russian Winter, you will need to remain on the offensive as the German army staggers, until the tide begins to turn again in spring 1942.

Then we make a little detour to the Crimean Front, which offers a somewhat different challenge due to its peculiar geographical features.

In summer 1942 the Wehrmacht launches a new grand summer offensive which finally leads to the crucial battle of Stalingrad. This battle plays a major role in Red Steel, and the various developments related to it are featured in several scenarios from autumn 1942 to January 1943.

In the last stage of the campaign, the Germans recover again with another victory at Kharkov. The final scenario gives the player a glimpse of the Kuban air battles, where Luftwaffe and VVS - the Soviet air force - clashed in intense air combat with massive numbers of aircraft involved over the Kuban region in the Caucasus.

Red Steel also adds new unlockable Commanders as well as new Specializations focused on the Lend-Lease aid program, allowing you to get access to American and British planes, tanks and trucks.

Order of Battle: Red Steel (https://www.slitherine.com/game/order-of-battle-red-steel) is bound for release in Q1 2020. You can take part in the Beta by applying here (https://www.slitherine.com/beta/order-of-battle-red-steel).

Red Steel is Order of Battle’s second DLC, focusing on the German invasion of Russia. After the initial German success seen in the Red Star DLC, it’s now time for the counterattack.

You can now purchase OT-34 flame tanks, T-70 light and KV-1 m1942 heavy tanks, improved 45mm 1942 AT guns, and the new ZiS-3 field gun which can also be used in an AT role. In the air, you’ll need the improved models of aircraft like Yak-9D and La-5F fighters, or Il-2M or Pe-2FT tactical bombers to keep up with the Luftwaffe.

But the enemy is also fielding brand new equipment: the Germans have new and improved Panzer 38 G, Panzer IV G, and Bf-110 G vehicles. Their Romanian allies now deploy R-2 tanks and IAR-80 fighters, whilst the Hungarians are using a derivative of the Italian Reggiane 2000 fighter under the name MAVAG Heya, plus more equipment from Germany.

Starting today and for the duration of one week, the entire Order of Battle franchise is getting a nice discount on Steam. Don't miss it!

Don't forget that you're still in time to take advantage of the Order of Battle sale, lasting until Monday on Slitherine! You can see all the offers  here (https://www.slitherine.com/inventory/special)

Order of Battle - Join the Beta Tournament
22/07/20

From Matrix/Slitherine:

Yesterday we released an update for Order of Battle, introducing the Slitherine Tournament system to the game.

Players who are familiar with Field of Glory II or Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach will know what this system is: it is a system through which Slitherine can set up fully automated tournaments.

All you need to do is sign up, then the system will pair you with opponents and create your PBEM games. You will be notified by mail of when the tournament is starting, and when it will be time to play your turns.

We are now ready to start our first tournament ever for Order of Battle. It is a Beta tournament, so there might be bugs. If you encounter any, please let us know and we will address them.

The Tournament will begin on Monday 27, and it will last 3 rounds, each lasting one week. You can sign up here (https://www.slitherine.com/tournaments). The tournament follows Swiss Tournament rules: you can find the full list of rules here (https://www.slitherine.com/tournaments/rules).

Please note that even though Order of Battle: World War II is a free-to-play game, you will need to own at least one DLC to be able to play multiplayer and to join the tournament.

Order of Battle: Red Storm has been announced
Tue, July 28, 2020

Order of Battle: Red Storm, the third chapter of the Soviet DLCs trilogy, has been announced for PC and Mac.

Fight the massive battles between 1943 and 1945 and lead the Red Army to victory.

The campaign begins with the fierce tank battle near Prokhorovka during Operation Citadel, the last grand German summer offensive on the Eastern Front in mid-1943. Following the failure of Citadel the Red Army will almost always be on the offensive.

Like in the previous Soviet DLCs, Red Star and Red Steel, Red Storm includes both famous and crucial battles as well as operations that are less known or limited in scope, but still provide unique challenges. So while the Eastern Front is known mostly for large land battles, a few operations with amphibious and naval elements, like the Kerch-Eltigen landings and the liberation of Crimea, were added.

An optional scenario roughly in the middle of the campaign depicts key aspects of partisan warfare in Byelorussia - winning it offers additional benefits in Operation Bagration, the huge offensive against Army Group Center in the same region a few months later.

The ultimate goal of this campaign is the defeat of the Third Reich in the Battle of Berlin. But Red Storm does not stop there - players can opt for another battle after the fall of Berlin and take their core army to the Far East to defeat Japanese forces in the last major Soviet offensive of World War 2 in Manchuria.

Order of Battle: Red Storm is about to start its Beta. If you are willing to give us a hand in providing your feedback, you can sign up here https://www.slitherine.com/beta/order-of-battle-red-storm

We will be revealing more information about Red Storm in the future, so stay tuned.

Red Storm, the third DLC in the Soviet Trilogy for Order of Battle: World War II, will release on September 17th

Red Storm covers the battles of the Red Army from 1943 to 1945 and features 15 new scenarios. The campaign begins with the massive tank battle near Prokhorovka during Operation Citadel, the last grand German summer offensive on the Eastern Front in mid-1943, and ends in Germany, where you will have to defeat the Third Reich in the Battle of Berlin in 1945.

Red Storm features 15 new scenarios and many new units for the Soviet, German and Hungarian factions. Eager to know more? Here's a sneak peek of the new air units.

Yakovlev Yak-9 T

The Yak-9 fighter was based on the robust Yak-7 and entered service in late 1942, during the battle of Stalingrad. It soon became available in ever-growing numbers, which helped the Soviet Air Force immensely to battle the increasingly stretched Luftwaffe in 1943-44.

Several variants were developed for specific purposes, like the Yak-9 B fighter-bomber, the D and DD versions for long-range escort missions, or the Yak-9 T equipped with a heavy 37mm gun able to destroy heavy bombers or even small naval vessels with just a few shots. The gun was so large that the cockpit had to be moved back to make room for the weapon. Of the nearly 17000 Yak-9 fighters produced ca. 2700 were built in the Yak-9 T variant.

Yakovlev Yak-3

The Yak-3 was a fighter aircraft developed from the earlier Yak-1 with the goal to create a dedicated air superiority fighter that was highly agile, robust and easy to fly. The plane turned out to be one of the smallest and lightest combat fighters fielded by any nation during the war.

When the aircraft entered service in summer 1944 it quickly demonstrated that it was a deadly dogfighter. With German air losses mounting the Luftwaffe issued specific orders to avoid air combat vs. the Yak-3 below altitudes of 5000 metres, where the Yak was most formidable. Between spring 1944 and summer 1946 over 4800 Yak-3 fighters were produced.

Tupolev Tu-2 S

The Tu-2 was a modern twin-engined frontline bomber, developed since 1937 by the famous Soviet engineer Andrei Tupolev. He was imprisoned during Stalin's Great Purge, then allowed to continue work, and released again in summer 1941 due to his important role for the Soviet military.

The Tu-2 entered service in late 1942, and proved to be fast, agile, and able to absorb serious damage. But it was also complicated to produce under war-time conditions. As only limited numbers of this type reached the front lines in 1943 the design was reworked into the Tu-2 S to greatly simplify production. The new variant was built from December 1943 and proved to be an outstanding bomber aircraft which played a key role in the Red Army's final offensives.

Heinkel He-162

The He-162 Volksjäger ("People's Fighter") was a result of the German Emergency Fighter Program which called for a simple jetfighter that could be built quickly to counter Allied air power in late 1944. At this point, the superior Me-262 jet had already entered service, but it was complicated, expensive and not always reliable.

Out of many advanced late-war designs the futuristic-looking He-162 was chosen for cheap and rapid mass production. While it was plagued by initial problems, and needed experienced pilots, its short service and post-war tests revealed it was a capable fighter indeed. But with only 120 pieces delivered by May 1945 the plane came too late to make a bigger impact. It remains a rare sight in OOB, but nonetheless a dangerous opponent.

Order of Battle: Red Storm - Out now
17 Sept 2020

Red Storm (https://www.slitherine.com/game/order-of-battle-red-storm) is available now and is the third and final DLC in the Soviet Trilogy for Order of Battle: World War II franchise. The new expansion covers the battles of the Red Army from 1943 to 1945.

The campaign begins with the fierce tank battle near Prokhorovka during Operation Citadel which was the last grand German summer offensive on the Eastern Front in mid-1943. The failure of Operation Citadel led the Red Army to be almost always on the offensive after. The ultimate goal of this campaign, therefore, is the defeat of the Third Reich in the Battle of Berlin.

You will now be able to purchase light Ba-64 armored cars, devastating BM-31 Katyusha rocket launchers or hard-hitting 100mm anti-tank guns. Improve your air forces with the agile Yak-3, the heavily armed Yak-9T and the more advanced Yak-9U as well as the improved medium Tu-2 and heavy Yer-2 bombers.

It is not just the allies getting new equipment, however, as the enemy is also fielding brand new equipment: the Germans now deploy their deadly 8.8cm Pak 43 as well as the nimble Pzkw II Luchs and new He-162 jet fighters in 1945. Their Hungarian allies will also field Turan tanks, Zrinyi SP guns as well as the Bf-109 and Me-210 aircraft.

To celebrate the end of the Soviet Trilogy, we're running a 50% week-long discount on Order of Battle: Red Star (http://www.slitherine.com/game/order-of-battle-red-star) and Order of Battle: Red Steel (https://www.slitherine.com/game/order-of-battle-red-steel). Join the Invasion Operations Tournament
Tue, October 20, 2020

The Invasion Operations Tournament is exploring the interesting and unique challenge that comes with invading the enemy from the sea and against entrenched defenders on land. Invasions are always a tricky business. The advantage is hard to predict as the attackers often know where the defenders are. But that may not help against the truly entrenched and determined on their home turf.

Take on other players and both sides to see who will come out on top.

The Invasion Operations Tournament is the second official Order of Battle tournament and features 3 unique scenarios:

Peninsula Invasion (1942) – This fictional scenario occurs near the start of the Japanese invasion of Burma. This is a unique take on an invasion front that was historically mostly overland. The Japanese forces must cut a vital rail link whilst the British defenders must make the best use of the dense jungle to frustrate their attackers.

Wake Island Assault (1942) - Distracted by the battle at Pearl Harbour, the American defenders at wake island repel one invasion only to face a second, more determined attempt. The defenders historically were overwhelmed and eventually captured. The balance of power for this mission has been evened out so anyone could come out on top.

Karjelan Kesä Fictional Scenario (1941) - This scenario features the German forces attacking over the Karelian Peninsula with the Russian forces defending north of Leningrad. This fictional scenario covers a “what if” situation where Germany took the lead in this theatre, rather than just helping to arm the Finns.

Important Update for Mac Users
Wed, November 18, 2020

We are ending support for the Mac version of Order of Battle at the end of 2020.

How it’s going to work:
- We will be releasing an update to the game before the end of 2020. This will be the final patch update for the Mac version of Order of Battle.
- You will retain access to any DLC you already own, and you will continue to be able to purchase any of the currently available DLC should you wish.
- Future DLC campaigns will not be released for the Mac version of the game.
- You will continue to have access to the PBEM servers, but will not be able to play against anyone who uses a Future version of the game. We will make a legacy PC version available so that players can continue to play against their friends on PC if they wish.

Unfortunately, the effort required to keep the game up-to-date for the very small community of Mac users is just not sustainable anymore for the team.

Order of Battle: Allies Defiant - New units preview
12 Jan 2021

Order of Battle: Allies Defiant (http://www.slitherine.com/game/order-of-battle-allies-defiant/) will be released on January 28th and it will come with 12 new scenarios as well as featuring some of the most iconic British units in WW2.

Join us for the first preview stream this Thursday, January 14th, 6.30 PM GMT, where we will be taking a look at some of the new scenarios and watching the new units in action.

In the meantime, you can also read about some of these new units below:

1. Hawker Hurricane Mk. IID

The Hawker Hurricane, which made its maiden flight in November 1935, was the most important British fighter aircraft at the outbreak of World War 2. Hurricane fighters formed the backbone of the RAF's Fighter Command in 1939-40 and downed more Luftwaffe aircraft during the Battle of Britain than the more modern and soon to be much more famous Spitfire.

Improved German fighter models appearing after 1940 made the Hurricane increasingly outclassed as a fighter, but the plane found new life as ground attacker and fighter-bomber. The Mk. IIC variant became known as "Hurribomber" and the Mk. IID was soon dubbed the "Flying Can Opener" since its heavy armament of two 40mm guns made the plane an excellent tank buster.

2. Handley Page Halifax

The heavy four-engined Halifax bomber flew for the first time in 1939. It also made its operational debut in March 1941, roughly a month after another heavy British bomber, the Short Stirling. Together, with the later Avro Lancaster, these planes made up the bulk of the strategic bombers in the RAF's Bomber Command in World War 2.

The Halifax was used widely in strategic bombing raids, including in attacks on Kriegsmarine capital ships and on V1 launch sites. It also served as an air transporter, for example during Operation Market Garden. The Coastal Command also operated the airframe as well, to deploy naval mines or for anti-submarine and reconnaissance missions.

While the production of the Halifax ended in 1946 with over 6100 planes delivered, the aircraft still continued to fly as civilian freighter and participated in the Berlin airlift 1948.

3. Daimler Mk.I

The Daimler armoured car was a successful British design which incorporated many advanced concepts and remained in service well into the 1950s and 1960s.

A parallel development to the smaller Daimler Dingo "Scout car", the bigger Daimler Mk. I was armed with a 2 pounder gun and entered service in 1941. Throughout the war the vehicle was used for armed reconnaissance in North Africa, Europe and in the South-East Asia theatre.

The vehicle's rugged nature, good all-terrain performance and high reliability made it one of the best armored cars in World War 2. Daimler delivered almost 2700 vehicles, including a howitzer-armed version for close fire support and a slightly improved Mk. II variant.

4. Scammell Pioneer

The Scammell Pioneer was first produced in 1927 and later used as an artillery tractor, recovery vehicle and tank transporter in the British Army. The tractor version was used militarily from 1935 onwards to tow medium and heavy artillery pieces of calibers from 4.5 to 8 inches. Over 3400 Pioneers of all types were produced until 1945 for both civilian and military duties.

With the introduction of this unit type to OOB, heavier British artillery units now require this heavy tractor for transport purposes. Light and medium guns can still be towed by cheaper trucks, however.

Order of Battle: Allies Resurgent - Announced
3 Aug 2021

Order of Battle: Allies Resurgent, the second chapter of a trilogy of DLCs featuring World War II from the Allied perspective, is coming soon. The new campaign depicts battles in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and finally in Europe from late 1942 to early 1944.

At the start of the campaign, you lead US forces in Operation Torch, which marks the beginning of US involvement in the fighting in North Africa. After the first battle against Vichy-French units, the player has to prevail against veteran Axis forces in Tunisia.

Afterwards, the campaigns shift focus to the advances of the British Eighth Army into southern Tunisia. Following a successful breakthrough at the Mareth Line, the British push north: they aim to form a continuous front with Allied forces which participated in Operation Torch, and advance into Tunisia from the west.

In spring 1943 you take command of both the US and British forces in a combined offensive to retake Tunis, and to end the Axis presence in North Africa for good.

The last stage of Allies Resurgent shows the return of Allied ground forces to Europe, beginning with the amphibious invasion of Sicily. Finally, the player has to invade mainland Italy at Salerno, defeat German defences at the Volturno Line, and ultimately needs to take back Rome.
