Title: New SOW Waterloo Toolbar (DOW Toolbar)
Post by: Asid on January 22, 2017, 09:32:33 PM
A new toolbar is being created.

It is in the initial stages and being tested by us before it is released.

Initial Features
•   It will replace the Vanilla.
•   It will be activated as a mod.
•   It will work with vanilla scenarios
•   Button highlight. So you know they have been pressed
•   Pressing on some buttons opens a sub menu.

Buttons; you can right click on some button to see more options

If you look at the Cavalry toolbar below. You will notice the "Fog of war" is where the unit information usually is. This is a feature in development for this toolbar.

Please feel free to suggest additions/removals for the toolbar.

Like it so far, good work!

I would like to see the command map button changed to simply CM instead of the map texture.

Agreed. I also miss the arrows for navigating the OOB.

Thank you very much for your work on this.  Im sure its not easy as that toolbar can be a pain from my experience but maybe you have figured out a trick to it :)

Just thank you for your hard work to help improve the game for everyone.

Testing V1a.

Things are moving in the correct direction.

Some additions:
-Removed flags from artillery guns; anyway, you can still select them clicking on the caisson when they are unlimbered or on the horse when they are limbered (the flags are still there, just invisible and near the ground ;))

-Ammo bar now shows the number of ammo per man instead of the total of the battalion (it's always a bar, not really a number, but now works much better than in the other version)

-added a tips in the terrain box. And also the terrain box is affected by the FOW

We will add the default scenarios to the toolbar.

Update: Mod Toolbar DOW v2

Change list 15/02/17

Added:

- Added default scenarios (played through "user scenarios")

- Added red text "Routed" on the unit status panel when a unit routing

- Added blue text "Good Skirmishers" and "Sniper" on the unit identification panel wich appears when a unit as a good skill in Open Order and Marksmanship so you can identify the best battalion to deploy in skirmish formation (or detach skirmishers company)

- The text "Fatigue" and "Morale" become red when the unit fall under 30% of that value. If a unit is fatigued, she can't charge, if Morale is low your unit is very unstable and close to routing.

- Added three notches on the Men bar at 75%, 50%, and 25% of total strenght. The 50% notch is red so you know that your battalion/squadron/gun is very close to routing

- Added the following mods:
      - Terrain Sprite3                                                   Jace11
      - Objective icons mod                                            Jace11
      - Explosion effects mod                                          Jace11
      - Replay icons mod (3d blocks in the replay view)     Jace11
      - Smoke&Flare mod                                               Biondo

Changed
- changed the Map Icons. Also now you can't see who is occupying an objective in the 2d map view.

- changed Tips for the Retreat Button (only for the officers, I need to fix it also for troops)

- changed the way you open the Advance Forward menu: now you open it with a left-click. Also changed the button's color, now red

- changed the way you open Skirmishers menu: now you open it with a left-click. You'll find a new button in that sub-menu to deploy all your battalion in       Skirmisher order

- Added some missing tips

- Changed the Map, OOB and Menu skin to match with the CM style

- Changed Map's skin in the Send courier menu and in the Message sent/received

- Some little tweak in the Telescope view (a bit more wide view)

- Now you can close the Map and the Command Map right-clicking on the relative button.

It does look like it brings together the best bits of most toolbars around. The highlighting of chosen options is really really important. Several times I have not been sure if my selection has taken for a unit.

How to get the toolbar?

Before I play MP online I΄d rather like to be able to handle the interface by practicing before a bit.

In the heat of a battle it takes automatisms. Otherwise my valuable troops find themselves in a mess, while I΄m trying to find the right buttons.

HITS-System, recon, communication, order-delay, modded interface etc. all new things need a little bit practice in the approach.

Moments of overtaxing will follow anyway. Thats for sure. But let me keep those below maximum.

Sorry. Just managed to get online.

As for the "KS Mod". we do not use it. We did use it extensively but faced a few problems with the mod. It has some great elements but our group tried it and chose to not use it.

The toolbar is coming along quite nicely, I really like the marching music but it seems a bit quiet to me. The first thing I noticed was you don't have the TC on/TC off all subordinates & the take charge of officers buttons, for me they are some of the most important commands on a toolbar.

Not sure, if I understood your point correctly, but yesterday when playing MP at DoW event, the flag icons to switch the AI control for commanders and batallions/esquadrons on/off were still there in the toolbar.
Upper left corner of the command buttons above the buggle.

It's in the Grog toolbar.

Actually the way to do this with our mod is via the keyboard, IIRC 8, 9 and 0 are the key.

I will add in the next version of the toolbar as buttons.

Thanks for the feedback :thumbsup

Hi Roy

I am glad you like the toolbar. We welcome and encourage input from the community. The toolbar is not complete and is constantly being improved.

As for the marching music, we are adjusting the levels to get a good balance. Norbsoft removed the slider which enabled adjustment from the menu a while back.

We have a great multiplayer community. Feel free to join us  :thumbsup

Roy, do you mean low volume when you are very close to a battalion (so full volume) or when a battalion is marching far away from you? Do you feel marching music volume is lower than other sounds in game?

Marching music is something quite difficult to balance. If you raise up too much the volume you can notice bad sounds and music overlapping during the game which is quite annoying, too low and you have some moment where you can't hear nothing which is bad too. It's possible to increase volume only using an external program. The file which identify sounds in game only permits to lower volume. In game it's not possible at all but we're talking about something which was not designed to work the way it's working in the mod.

The way marching musics were designed was different. In Gettysburg (in Waterloo wasn't implemented but the basics were the same as Gettysburg) when you ordered a brigade to march and hit Using Road button, a music starts and loops until they march on the road. You can only enable/disable without have the possibility to increase/decrease volume.

I found that it's possible to have things works exactly as in Gettysburg but the problem is that you can't have specific marching music for different units but only generics one.

Of course everything can be improved ;)

Low volume when you are very close to a battalion. It seems low compared to say cavalry or artillery.

But if you don't like this way to play it's possible to schedule the battle you prefer here and see if someone wants to join. On steam there are other guys looking for   bird eye view game. I or you can make a post there to see what happens.

We wants to encourage everyone to play with the preferred style  :thumbsup

BTW, when playing HITS, you probably dont want the marching music to be of higher volume, cos you are often the closest possible to the batallions.
When side by side to a friendly general and simulating a verbal communication on the field by TS-whisper-channel, I indeed had problems to understand the otherone properly because of the pipers and drummers.

The bar showing the unit΄s strengh is very thin. There is a little red marker moving to the left if a unit has suffered losses, so you can estimate the percentage of force remaining.
The absolute number on the right only displays the initial strengh.

OK, I suppose it's a bit like FOW with the estimation of casualties.

Yes, correct. You have three markers the bar at 75, 50 and 25% of the initial strength.

You couldn't also see information from a battalion which don't have an officer in "bonus range". In any case you still could give orders to that battalion

Is that when you get no information in the toolbar? I did wonder about that. :)

Late reply:

I am in GMT +8 so I can't join your multiplayer event at 21:00 GMT.

However, over the past few years, I have used your toolbar and played many memorable multiplayer games with my friends. Thank you so much for your work! :doh

But I want to ask a question: is sandbox multiplayer online can only choose one side, and the other side can only be randomly refreshed? This creates a very large number of unfair division games.

Yes, coop-sandbox-mode does not allow to compose the opposing force.
So it can happen that an infantry division is facing a cavalry division or other inadequate setups occur.

Therefore I recommend to use the scernario editor "SowWLSdkv2" to create setups individually. You can select any detail about the forces.
A couple of years ago we did like 90 % of our MP sessions by using the sandbox mode, so coops could result in unwieldy Opponents. Nowadays its just the opposite. We mostly play scenarios built with the editor.

At the first glance it might look a bit confusing. But its not hard to create a simple scenario very quickly.

1. Select a map
2. Select an OOB
3. Drag the active units from the OOB and drop them on the desired positions on the map
4. Place one or more objectives on the map and set its conditions
5. Set End Time and save the scenario.
