Title: Steel Beasts wish List
Post by: Asid on October 01, 2016, 05:22:02 PM
Infantry quality

I wish we had the ability in V4 to assign the quality of troops globally or by selecting a vehicle. At the moment you have to select each inf squad. Also if they are mounted you need to dismount them first.

Oh my god... someone finally opened this topic here. Im going to have a long long list here. <.<  if I ever have energy to write it.

Hey Asid. Currendly its possible to use Template. Like just once create a template with elite troops and save it. Then you can use it later on. But yeah I agree with you. It would be awesome to be able to globally adjust quality of troops.

- I wish that all actions where crew talks to each other would get a crew voice. Like if commander tells gunner to zoom in, or change polarity. Or if commander chooses to use 50 call instead. - Or if gunner sees need to use frag rounds instead of sabots on BMP-2  or anything like that. Currendly only some of these commands have voice. My point here is that it would make multinational multicrew more likely to succeed. :)   And make steeelbeast less dependant of third party voice software like TS.

Erm...  many more to come. This was one that I remembered right now. But cant get out more from my head right now. Ill head to bed. GN.

What I'd like to see:

Graphics: Native anisotropic filtering (makes textures appear clearer at longer distances), so I don't have to force it through drivers and have additional overhead

Crewable vehicles: T-64B, T-72B3, Leclerc, T-80U, BMP-1

Non-crewable vehicles: T-80B, T-80BV, BTR-D, BMD-1

HMG: PKMS (PKM with tripod)

SP mortars: 2S9

Artillery: M270 MLRS (apparently being worked on)

Code: Either DirectX 11, or OpenGL followed years later by Vulkan.

Did you mean to say "crewable BMP-3"?

My wish is probably pretty easy to implement.

When in map view. In the lower right corner where you can rapidly move the area you are viewing. I wish they would put a small scale map there as well. Sure some of the maps it would be of no help at all because they are pretty featureless but for maps that have some features I think it will be handy for moving around quickly.

With this being a simulator, and not just a game. Would that be realistic for vehicles?

I don't think it's any more of a cheat than glancing at a topo map & picking out where you are on it based on a strong terrain feature.

Will I didn't go as far too say a cheat. Just adding the question between game and simulator. I still think there should only be a military map, and if you turn on easy mode, then you could have a topo map and double f8.

The crew gets out of the tank and repair the caterpillar.

The crew gets out of the tank under fire and run out.

Maybe there should be two topics. One for realistic, simulation wishes, and another just for wishes in the game.

Having a mini map makes it IMO, too much like WOT.

Damn Brah, stop stewing on this! LOL

There is already a minimap. That little white box; I am just talking about a enhancing an already provided feature.

I agree with you about the map type though. I would prefer to just see a military style topo map as well. Preferably one as accurate as a 1/500000 military map.

I am a bit mystified why there is such a resistance to my idea so I have to conclude I am not doing a very good job of getting my thought across. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words so I made a graphic training aide.

As you all know we spend most of our time zoomed in on the location we are presently in with occasional looks around the map. Notice the map is zoomed in on your section but in the lower right is the map in its entirety. This is what I am suggesting & see no resemblance to WoT. Moreover the whole map is so small that is only useful for identifying significant terrain features.

Isn't there similar box( empty without map) currently that we use to move the map around.... At least on mission editor? I think this would be good addition that long know is succesting. And not a cheat at any way.

That does explain more of what you want. I thought you wanted one in f8, or in tank view. Currently the use is just to have an idea of where you are zoomed into. It could easily be enhanced, but would take more away from real life reality. I guess the only question is where to draw the line between nice to have and not adding a significant amount of help, compared to what is on the vehicle in real life is all you get. Myself personally, would like just what you would have in real life. Vehicle functions, and a paper/plastic overlay map.

I'd love to see support for 4K monitors, since I own one. But as Ssnake has said, the GUI code is getting a complete rewrite.

Many missions have no briefings at all...Oh and some folks don't even look at it if there is one...  ::)

In the planning phase you can make text larger prior to start, and in game. Not the briefing, or graphics made by the mission designer. Maybe one day.

That would be good, of it would translate. That way he would be able to read what someone types in English, and others could read what he types.

Thank´s Cougar, didn´t know that. Tutorials and game menus text is small, I have to squeeze my eyes and gonna get wrinkles under my eyes, then my girlfriend is not gonna love me any more! All SB´s fault LOL! Cupid will hunt them down  ;D

I agree the language thing but there´s way to many of them in the world.  Maybe Forester can do it the other way around, have his system adapt to a standard keyboard.

I just tested these things on Steelbeast...  when you have russian language pack picked to group of active languages. and your language on steelbeast is english. You still see russian as weird letters.

But if you choose russian language from steelbeast menu. You see both russian and english letters correctly  -  Downside is...  all text on steelbeast is on russian, and grew speaks russian.   :(

I understand that there is a need for excavated obstacles, and you'll get them, once that the new terrain engine has been successfully implemented. Once that it is there we'll start working on dynamic terrain, and that would include the ability to dig trenches of any size.

Red. You can already do this. You have to go to F8 then select the track from lower right. Should bring up a list. Highlight troops, and it should give you the option to mount your troops, or ones nearby.

That would be good. Here's another one: eSim should stop using MD5 hashes for its downloads section. MD5 was cracked a long time ago, and should be replaced with SHA-256 at a minimum. For calculating and verifying hashes, I recommend HashTools (http://www.binaryfortress.com/HashTools/).

In case anyone is wondering, here's why eSim should not replace MD5 with SHA-1: https://sites.google.com/site/itstheshappening/ SHA-1 is theoretically crackable right now. Like I said, it's time for eSim to replace MD5 with a minimum of SHA-256, and HashTools is a great tool to use for this.

Here's another thing: improvements to the installer. As it stands, Steel Beasts compresses various file collections into RAR archives. Among the files it compresses are already compressed CAB archives. Compressing already compressed data doesn't work very well, and can actually increase compressed file size. Simply putting files into subfolders as required and compressing the collections into RAR archives would be simpler, cut down on the time it takes to make the installer, cut down on installation time, and possibly save on installer size.

Ssnake's broad wording has got me a bit worried about the prospects for any more Cold War vehicles being added:
Quote
I'm not categorically ruling all this out, but to be honest it's more of a diversion than anything else. I see a serious danger to dilute our development capacity and to create a false impression about what SB Pro is about. As soon as the first Sherman is in, people will scream for a Panther and a Panzer IV (both of which, arguably, saw some post WW2 battlefield use). Features create their own demand dynamic. At the same time our actual business is the polar opposite, armored warfare of today and the next ten years rather than the last ten, or from 60 years ago.

Volcano and Ssnake have observations that will affect future vehicle additions. More complicated vehicles will absolutely need 3D interiors, while simpler vehicles will only have 3D interiors as a bonus:
Quote from: Volcano
I guess it just depends on the vehicle. For the simplest vehicles the interior view is not vital, but is still nice to get your bearings, and further make you feel like you are inside of it. But for the more complicated vehicles, the interior is vital, because you cannot map every button to a key.
Quote from: Ssnake
...and we're not just talking about one super-complicated vehicle, but the entire fleet of them. Our default hotkeys cover as much commonality as possible. And we have basically used up all 102 keys on the keyboard, with maybe three to five left. Those that are awkward to find while looking at the screen.

We could of course start using exotic and painful combinations like Shift+Alt+0 - but we won't. This runs contrary to our principles about good user interfaces. Therefore, 3D interiors are not just eye candy but a necessary element to allow us to present a wide range of different fire control systems in a single product.

Here's my wish-list.

1. Add basic but more accurate interiors for the "simpler/simplest vehicles" driver's station. It doesn't have to come with be clickable knobs and buttons, but at least make the interior accurate looking as per the vehicle, rather than a stock driver's station for various more complicated vehicles.

2. Add crew management. Like in Microprose's original B-17 sim, B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th (Dev. Wayward Design/Pub. Hasbro) and Silent Hunter V. But I suppose this only works if there is a protracted campaign. The Mighty 8th allowed you to bandage your injured crewmen. The sim was also a little too real as you hear the cries of your injured crewmember. "I'm hurt bad". Or something like that. Call me compassionate, but I have soft spot for my crew. Heck, even Colonel Doolittle would agree. He took care of the Doolittle's Raiders matters for as long as he was alive.

So that's my 2 cents worth. It would be worth much more if I could contribute directly to eSimgames by actually sending then pictures of the actual "simplest" vechicles.  That way I can do the research for them and save SSnake some time. Hey, that's not a bad idea, IMHO. I'm off to check the interiors out by referring to Jane's.

As for crew management, I bet it'll be at the bottom of the heap of things to do, since SB is about the simulation of tanks and vehicles.

Cheers
Frankie Kam

If we would simulate full caliber steel AP rounds, we would also simulate ricochets. But the ricochet angle of modern APFSDS rounds is so ridiculously high (>80°, measured from the face normal) that it's just not worth it.
:facepalm_smiley
Here's a list of rounds in Steel Beasts that can be considered to be AP rounds:
5.45mm RU: 7N6M AP
7.62mm x 54R: 7N13 AP
7.62mm x 51: M61 AP
.300 Winchester: MK 248 MOD 0 AP
.338 AP485: XM1154 AP-I
.50 cal M2 AP-T
.50 cal M8 AP-I
.50 cal Mk 121 APHEI
12.7mm RU: B-32 AP
12.7mm RU: AP-I
14.5mm KPV: B-32 AP
14.5mm KPV: BS-41 AP-I
14.5mm KPV: AP-I
20mm RH202: DM43 API-T
23mm 2A7: BZ API
23mm 2A7: BZT API
25mm Bushmaster: SAPHEI-T
30mm 2A42/2A72: 3UBR6 AP
75mm 75/SA 50: PCOT-51P APCBC-T
75mm 75/SA 50: POT-51A APC-T
100mm D-10T: BR-412D AP-T

Oh yes, ricochets are added to my Steel Beasts wish list.

Post by: Rinix on June 11, 2017, 03:59:58 AM
My Steel Beasts wish list has only kept growing since I last posted it. So I'm only going to post the graphics and general sections.

Graphics:
All light sources being able to cast lights and shadows, right now only the sun can do this
Better looking water
Bokeh depth of field
Higher resolution gunsights
Higher resolution textures and normals, up to 4096x4096 or higher
Hit decals
Native ambient occlusion (I don’t know if soft shadows already covers this), recommended methods to examine are SSAO (simplest), SSDO (modified version of SSAO), HBAO+ (high quality and highly efficient), and VXAO (highest quality, highest GPU cost, runs best on Nvidia Maxwell-based and later GPUs, requires a minimum of DX11 or OpenGL 4.5, don’t know about Vulkan support)
Native anisotropic filtering (makes textures appear clearer at longer distances), so we don't have to force it through graphics drivers and have additional overhead
Post-processing AA like FXAA and SMAA (both anti-aliasing methods work with Nvidia and AMD graphics cards if they are implemented in the game itself, FXAA has been around longer and is presumably simpler, while SMAA delivers better quality)
Rendering and outputting in HDR as an option, rather than just rendering in HDR and compressing the output down to SDR
Screen space reflections
Spruced-up trees (pun intended)
Support for Nvidia DSR and AMD VSR
Tessellation (will require a minimum of DX11, OpenGL 4.0, or Vulkan)
Volumetric fog
Volumetric lighting/God rays

General:
Ability to carry more than 1 type of RPG ammo, like a rifle squad with a Carl Gustav M2 launcher and a mixture of rounds, or several variants of the AT4 or M72 LAW at the same time
Active protection systems
Armed UAV, since they’re already using the Sperwer’s 3D model as a generic medium UAV, they could make a Sperwer-B armed with the Spike-LR ATGMs that are already in the simulator
Dynamic thermal signatures which change with activity for both infantry and vehicles
Firing assault rifles from positions other than prone
Firing RPGs from positions other than kneeling
For the installer, putting files into subfolders as required and compressing the collections into RAR archives, since the current system of compressing some files into CAB archives and then compressing all of the files into RAR archives only adds to installer building time due to having to compress twice, and only adds to installation time due to having to decompress twice
Functional firing ports on PCs
Get rid of the generic MGs for rifle squads and implement the option for light infantry to have an LMG as an option, the rifle and MG dismount squads are intended to be spilt teams of a single squad, therefore the rifle dismount squads shouldn’t have a generic MG
Gradual identification of targets
Ground clutter providing concealment
Ground surveillance radar
GUI code rewrite to optimize the GUI for a resolution higher than 800x600 and to work better with aspect ratios other than 4:3
Having the option to only be able to draw map graphics during the planning phase
Hiding the motorcycle while the dismount is scouting
Illumination rounds
Improved HE and fragmentation model
Improved damage model, dice rolls to determine damage from spalling don’t cut it anymore
Increased variation of movement penalties within squad types, like an RPK-74 having less of a movement penalty than an M60
Instancing, which requires a minimum of DirectX 11 or OpenGL 3.1
Instantly kicking a player out of a crew position when that crew member becomes a casualty
Leopards with working commander’s panels that show laser range finder returns
Limiting time spent in the F8 view after a vehicle is destroyed
Look into LIDAR data compression, such as LASzip or LizardTech’s LiDAR Compressor
M1919A4 for the Sho’t Kal’s commander instead of the M240
Make the RBS56 NLAW behave like the top attack ATGM that it is
Manual aiming and firing of rifles
Manual aiming and firing of RPGs
Map updates that can be turned on and off for individual vehicles
Mine roller option for M113G3
More command vehicles with access to UAV cameras, right now only the M113G4 DK OPMV can do this
More natural camera movement in F1 view and binoculars view
Moving the commander’s map view while in unzoomed F1 view on vehicles with map panels
Normals folder in Mods folder
Repair vehicles reducing the time it takes to repair any damage that the damaged vehicle could otherwise repair on its own
Rewriting for DirectX 11 or OpenGL 4.0+
Rewriting for the Vulkan API, as well as porting back to either DirectX 11 or OpenGL 4.0+ for those with older graphics cards, maybe have id Software’s Frankfurt studio do the porting
Ricochets
RPGs with actual trajectories
Secure new customers such as Belgium, Estonia, and Portugal, since they won’t require too many new additions and therefore are relatively easy additions to the revenue stream
Sniper teams being able to shoot at vehicle crew that expose themselves
Sniper teams equipped with anti-materiel rifles having the ability to engage vehicles and vehicle sights
Support for GPGPU computing, like OpenCL 1.2
Support for more than 6 vehicles per platoon
Support for multiple alphabets at the same time
Support for OGG and MP3 sound files
Using libpng and libjpeg to capture screenshots, and setting libjpeg’s chroma sampling to 1x1 to prevent red text from being smudged
Vehicle dashboards that look better than what we have now (will satisfied when all dashboards looks better than they do now)

Oh my god. I feel that if developers would see your list they would look at it in disbelief and then their heads would turn red and steam to come out of their ears.

And yet... I do kind of agree with you. Even to an amount that this all should be minimum requirement. Though... I guess that now when I said that. It's my death sentence.

I am not sure I understand you correctly about clearer images at longer distance, and forcing them through graphics. Are you saying getting clearer images then a real life sight would get? When dealing with graphics, we need to remember this is a simulation, and should as accurately as possible, render real life, not better than real life.
I agree with much of this. There is so much, untapped potential.

A lot of the things we would like, which appear on your list Rinix, are visual. Some people say it is just eye candy. I disagree somewhat. I believe immersion is increased by better visuals.

The issue with SB is that eSims is working with an older engine. They have to be creative when they add anything. If you just "bolt on" code it is not efficient and can lead to issues. The more you add-on this way, the more the problem can be compounded.

I play many games/sims which have things we would love to see in SB. Things like deformable terrain, hit decals, proper lighting, etc. We just have to hope that eSims can be creative and find a way to keep improving. A new engine would be great but this can cost quite a lot, not just financially.

Makes sense now. Only thing we must always keep in mind, is that this is a sum, and not a game when it comes to the things we want added. I would really like to break my squad to have just the RPG member run up and take out a tank, or demolish a building, without rushing the whole squad.

I wish esims would fix the infantry dismount bug.

I was playing with an M113 yesterday in a DOW mission. I dismounted my 2 squads. no problem. When I went to remount only 1 squadremounted properly. The other squad mounted and dismounted. My vehicle would stop and start due to trying to remount. I lost total use of the mounted unit. I tried all the usual fixes. Nothing worked. I spent a large part of the mission trying to fix this.  :thumbdown

This may seem as a very odd wish...  but here it comes.

I wish that map / mission creator would be able to create or choose to use outdated map.

One where buildings might be missing or might have additional buildings roads. Perhaps lake or river would have flooded. Or Fighting have caused an forest fire that cleared area from protective forest cover.

To me, it would add immersion, because on real life I deal with these changes on maps nearly every day. There are roads, where there didnt use to be. Or Water canals, ditches. Or bridge is missing.

I also wish mission creator to be able to set a local weather conditions. Such as local fog or smoke to a selected area. That would stay desired time, even hours and dissappear or slowly vanish at the end of selected time.

I do also wish minefield sizes would be possible to set as down as to a single mine or single row of few mines.

In my Steel Beasts wish list, there are these entries under the General category:
The need to adopt one of these newer graphics APIs just became more urgent: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/7ncr3y/regarding_amd_and_the_lack_of_directx_9_support_a/ AMD's latest graphics driver has broken DirectX 9 support in a number of games. AMD's statement that they are not very interested in fixing this issue because the game it first showed up on was from 2007 was made before it was discovered that other games, including very recent ones, are suffering from the same issues. Now whether AMD will fix these issues for any of the games is up in the air. Considering this, it's time that eSim Games moved Steel Beasts to a newer graphics API, even if it's only to DirectX 10.0.
Title: Re: Steel Beasts wish List

It turns out that AMD will fix the issues after all: https://www.techpowerup.com/240159/amd-will-fix-adrenalin-driver-game-incompatibility-issues-after-all But it raises the question of how committed AMD will be to supporting games running on DirectX 9. It's still time for eSim Games to move Steel Beasts to a newer graphics API.

Ssnake is wrong about the T-64. Transnistria and Uzbekistan have the T-64 and are at peace, but he may still have reservations about them. DRC also has the T-64, but is busy with its own civil war. South Korea has some T-80Us and BMP-3s, but Russia is looking into buying them back.
Quote
A playable T-64 - I'd love to add it, but the number of countries operating them is limited, pretty much all of them are in an undeclared war and have other things on their mind than supporting a German/US game developer with access to the vehicles and to their user manuals. The same goes for a T-80. I won't rule out that at some point an unexpected opportunity might present itself. Even then we'd still need an open slot in the development work plan, and if I'm doing my job as the sales force, such an open slot would never emerge. Fortunately for you I'm only a mediocre sales guy. ;)

I don't know if this is coming with the new terrain engine or after that, but it's good to know that Steel Beasts will finally be getting instancing. :)

Be aware that with the next major update we'll switch to single-bit transparency for foliage/ground clutter (to enable instancing).

Thanks to Rotar's help, I was able to get Nvidia DSR working with Steel Beasts (using only the first image from http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3587/~/how-to-enable-dynamic-super-resolution-in-games), and I imagine that AMD VSR would work just as well (https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/DH-010.aspx). I can remove "Support for Nvidia DSR and AMD VSR, or just support for supersampling" from my wish list, since DSR and VSR support is already present. I won't be using DSR, as the text at 4K and 125% Windows scaling is small enough as it is.

It's official, the switch to single-bit transparency for foliage is coming with 4.1 and therefore with the new terrain engine: http://www.steelbeasts.com/topic/12005-lets-do-some-grass/?tab=comments#comment-181405
