Mixed feelings about this.  Might be great to see all the modern effects applied to the latest sim, but will any of this help legacy esp platforms like prepar ?

Not exactly excited about starting over, but if the product is compelling enough....

Microsoft interview @ PCGamer

Xbox's Phil Spencer on Game Pass, Steam and the Epic Games Store

Why did you bring Flight Simulator back? What led to that moment?

We do have some pilots on the teams that are big fans of flight, and flight sims, and flying themselves, who are passionate about it, so we said, 'okay, let's see what we can do'. Flight Sim was a game in our past that sold millions and millions of units and had a very, very passionate community—in fact, they're still out there. So, okay. Can we do something new with Flight Sim? Can we actually move it forward in an interesting way?

I remember in February or March we were looking at gameplay that we had the option to bring and it was pretty close to what you saw on stage, we saw it [during the Xbox Briefing, the room just went silent as we were looking at this. Afterwards, it was Shannon Loftis [GM of Microsoft Studios Publishing] who brought it in, who happens to be a pilot, and I said, "is that the game?"

"Yeah, that's the game."

'You're going to have to put at the bottom that that's in-game. because nobody's going to believe that's in-game." You notice the video says '4K in-game'. And then I said, "why does it look like that?". There's 2 petabytes of geographical data behind that game, that they're then using Azure AI to stitch the seams together so as you're flying, you're seeing a seamlessly connected Earth. I was like "you've gotta put that in the video because it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen". It's using real geographical data, real weather data, to give you the ability to literally fly around what looks like a living planet.

That's new. To me, that's exciting. They can do it on Xbox and they can do it on Windows and it look like that on stage. This whole thing—'can we really put Flight Sim in an E3 press briefing, because Flight Sim's kind of its own thing, some people don't even call it a game'. But it was visually stunning in my mind. Maybe I'm a little bit too close to it.

To a PC-specific audience it shows you're conscious of them and of your history as a company.

Update from Microsoft

"For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return."

Leonardo da Vinci

This sentence from Leonardo da Vinci embodies the driving force behind the Microsoft Flight Simulator team. And while all of us have our own personal associations with flight, the entire team is committed to the singular goal of capturing the artistry, mastery, and essence of flying. We believe part of achieving that goal is taking a moment to recognize pivotal steps in our development process, and today is one of our biggest. The culmination of time, effort, technology, and collaboration was edited into a 1:30 second video shown at the Microsoft Keynote presentation this year to kick off E3 2019.

On behalf of the entire Microsoft Flight Simulator team, we humbly and deeply express our gratitude for such an overwhelmingly positive response to our announce trailer! We recognize that without people like you, we don’t get to make experiences like this that span more than 35 years and maintain such a passionate following. Thank you for being patient enough to weather the turbulence caused by some of our previous missteps. Thank you for being willing to look to the possibilities of the future while asking us to be accountable for the past. We hear you, we value you, we want to make the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator for you, with you.

While this is not the moment to answer every question being asked, we do want to take the opportunity to answer a few important ones:

1.   We are making Microsoft Flight Simulator. Emphasis on the word SIMULATOR.

2.   Designed for PC, optimized for multiplatform support (e.g. Xbox).

3.   Yes. We are supporting 3rd Party Content Development and Community Content creation. We are aware of the concerns in the current eco-system and are working to address them.

4.   Yes. We genuinely want to work closely with the community in the development of this title.

5.   Accessibility is important to us. Whatever your abilities are, if you want to fly, we are going to do whatever we can to make that happen. Yoke and pedals, mouse and keyboard, controller, etc. No pilot should be left behind.

Over the next few months, we will be communicating our plans for the rest of the year, including important updates to the Preview Build/Insider Programs, and important development beats. Maintaining a collaborative relationship with the community starts with transparency and clearly communicated expectations. Early August is our current timeline for kicking off the communication of the development roadmap. We will continue to add clarity to this timeline throughout the summer. If you’d like the latest updates, please make sure to sign up for the Insider Program.

This is just the first step in an adventure we are honored and excited to be taking with all of you. The reaction we received from our recent trailer was an incredible reminder that we are not alone in this passion we have for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, honestly expressing your feedback and concerns, and for taking this next step with us.

From all of us here working on Microsoft Flight Simulator:

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

July 11th, 2019 – Development Update

As the team enters the dog days of summer, we’ve been hard at work putting the finishing touches on many of the big updates we’re planning to share toward the end of summer. Our excitement continues to build, as does our impatience to share this information with you. So we press forward counting down the days until we can open the hangar doors and dive into the details with you.

There are many very important topics being discussed in the community (e.g. New Flight Model/IFR-VFR Flight/Weather Simulation Depth/VR Support, etc.). The team is constantly monitoring the feedback/suggestions being discussed and please know that many of these topics and more, will be covered thoroughly in near future updates.

In the meantime, here’s a work-in-progress screenshot, and confirmation that the Insider Program will be starting in early August as part of our development roadmap kickoff.

On July 25th, we will be releasing another update on our plans for August and September. Until next time, know that the team is excited and anxious to share more information with you.

Sincerely,

The Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

July 25th, 2019 – Development Update

“Update to an update about an update” – AVSIM member post

Heading into the last week of July the team is excitedly awaiting the arrival of August. There are a number of big updates planned for August and September starting with the V1 release of the Development Roadmap.

Within the next few weeks we’ll be providing the official release date for the Development Roadmap, in the meantime, we’d like to share a few of the deliverables from this plan:

•   August (Early/Mid) – Insider Program kickoff
        •   First batch of content for the Insider Program members is being prepared for delivery:
           •   Advanced preview of the Development Roadmap
           •   In-Sim” content – clips captured from build.
           •   Preview Build Program – Detailed information on first build deliverable, Insider participation sign-up

•   August (Mid/Late) – Development Roadmap Release (v.2019.08/drr1)
        •   Development beats through EOY 2019
           •   Build Program Recruitment and Release timeline
           •   SDK Update
           •   3rd Party Content Update
           •   UGC Content Update

•   August (Late) – Build Program Kickoff
        •   Preview Build Program – Detailed information on first preview build deliverable
        •   Preview Build Program – Public Participation sign-up
        •   Preview Build Program – Preview of next build details

“What we want” – AVSIM Thread

There are two important plans we will be sharing with you in September:

1.   The pipeline for how we will provide an in-depth look at the product we are building.
2.   The process for how we will integrate the community into this process to facilitate a collaborative partnership to bring this product to launch.

Threads like this on AVSIM, and across all the forums we pay close attention to, are truly valued by the team. So though we may not be directly interacting with you at the moment, we hear you. August is about setting expectations, providing a clear Development Roadmap outlining how we get from today to launch. September is about how we accomplish that task, together.

“Early August for Insider… Hope I get in.” – Reddit User r/flightsim

MSFS – You’re in. In August we’ll kick-off the Insider Program. Insiders will be able to login to the site and be given access to the Insider area, and not just redirected to the FAQ, as per current.

“I want to pay for it in unmarked, non-sequential, low denomination bills, placed in three black plastic bin bags, left on the third floor of an abandoned multi-story car park, at midnight.” – AVSIM User

MSFS – Done. Once you make the drop, head south 3 kilometers. Locate a metal trash bin, retrieve mobile phone at bottom of bin. At 1:06AM text “no subscription”. Await further instruction.

“Microsoft don’t read AVSIM or any other forums, they read their own gaming forums and insiders community forums, it is standard company policy.” – AVSIM User
MSFT – Well this is awkward…

Finally, the team would like to take a moment to call attention to AVSIM mod 188AHC. Your effort and contributions do not go unnoticed. Thank you.

Next update coming August 8th!

Sincerely,
The Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

August 8th, 2019 – Development Update
Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

AUGUST!

The team is excited to move into the next phase of communication with the community regarding our development plans. As we mentioned in our July 25th update, August is about setting expectations regarding our development process through launch. September is about defining how we will involve the community in that process.
Here is our current schedule for August:

•   AUGUST 15th – Insider Program Kickoff (preview of Development Roadmap Release)
•   AUGUST 22nd – Development Roadmap Release (General Release)
•   AUGUST 29th – Build Program Kickoff

But wait there’s more!

One of the most important topics we see being discussed in the community is WHEN we plan to start talking about the project. You want the information, the team wants to share this information, so where exactly IS the information? It’s coming. The challenge with creating a transparent development process built on collaboration is that we have to work on the foundation for delivering that information before doing so. With that said, we will be kicking off our Feature Exploration Series in the fall where we will be working closely with the community to walk-through the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator in granular detail.

But wait there’s more!

That said, because we understand the importance of this topic to the community, the team is working hard to adjust the schedule to see what information we can share earlier than currently planned. In our August 15th update, we will provide more clarity on where we at in the process.

Insiders! DRR preview release in t-minus 7 days…

Sincerely,

Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Insider Program Cleared for Takeoff

Today is a day more suitable for pictures (well technically screenshots, clips, and a preview copy of our Development Roadmap but that didn’t sound nearly as impressive so just pretend this part isn’t here) than words!

“Insiders – We are now boarding, please proceed to the log-in area.”

Next update August 22nd!

Sincerely,

Say less, do more.

August has been busy month for the team! We continue to make great progress on the Tech Alpha build, Feature Discovery Series, and many of the other exciting things we are working on for release in September and October!

3rd Party Progress Update – We expect to release the first rev of plans and partners in October.

•   Phase 1 – Outreach and Engagement (in-progress)
•   Phase 2 – Code and Content Integration (in-progress)
•   Phase 3 – Content Release Timeline (kick-off)

Head into the Insider area if you’d like to check out 3 new screenshots from some previous builds.
In the meantime –

Philosophical Question
If a tree falls on a sloped runway but there is no one there to see it, is the runway still sloped?

Answer:
We hope so, because we’ve got curved/sloped runways in the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Next update on August 29th!

Sincerely,

“Et tu, Connor?”

The team is incredibly excited to officially kickoff our Feature Discovery Series with a preview of Episode 1 (World), posted in the Insider Area. In this series we will be covering the core features in attempt to answer many of the most discussed topics throughout the community.

We’re also delivering an updated DR outlining our October deliverables. Insiders should expect a DR update within the next few weeks that will provide a preview of our November deliverables.

A note on deliverables – we’re moving the Feedback Pipeline overview deliverable to our next post coming early October. This will allow us to allocate more update space to this deliverable to provide greater detail.

Finally, as we bring September to a close the entire team would like to thank everyone out there patiently waiting for more granular information on the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator. The information you seek, is much closer than you think.

The main thing I like about Xplane is the ease of which the graphics engine is able to render graphics heavy scenes.  The sim just runs like butter with everything cranked to the max if you have the latest greatest hardware.

P3d on the other hand struggles, I have to use trickery to get the same spectacular scenes even with my small fortune costing NASA computer.

I do fly P3D 90% of the time because the addon world is so much more mature.  Nothing in xplane comes close to the aircraft from PMDG or FSlabs.  You can create a quite immersive world with the list of addons available in the P3d platform.

Xplane hasn't solved the AI traffic with functioning AI ATC yet.  I'm hoping for the just flight traffic to possibly do this, but early reports aren't good and the p3D version sucks.
You could just do xplane in vatsim / pilot edge with bluebell models to make AI irrelevant, but not everyone is ready or has time for the world of human ATCs.

I do look forward to FS2020 and the modernization of the graffics engine, my RTX Titan can finally flex it's muscles in all its glory.  I don't look forward to rebuying all my addons again to work in FS2020.  If the improvement is significant though, it may be money well spent even though it's again.

There is another video by Frooglesim, which give a bit more insight, although this one is made on the same video footage.

It looks we are going to experience a next generation of simulation next year. Some of the area, like physics and aerodynamics simulation, which I was concerned about before, should be properly represented.  :)

Global Preview Event
29 Sept 2019

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Redmond Washington – Today, we have reached another critical milestone in our development. On September 19th and 20th, Microsoft hosted a small number of press and community representatives at the Rainier Flight Service in Renton Washington to attend the Global Preview Event for the next evolution of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The team was honored and humbled to share our passion for flight with attendees from around the world. From taking actual flights in Cessna 172s to sitting down and spending a few hours playing our pre-alpha build, the entire event was a magical opportunity to sit down and talk in detail about the development and product.

The Global Preview Event also marks the next step in our communication with the community regarding more granular product details. The team gave technical presentations on four important topics during the event:

1.   World
2.   Sky
3.   Aerodynamics
4.   Cockpits

Starting today, you’ll get to see and hear the reactions from those in attendance. Starting in October, these presentations will be delivered to the community as part of our Feature Discovery Series.

Since our introduction at E3, it’s been an incredible journey. The engagement by the community and support we’ve received from flight simulation fans around the world, has been truly amazing. Today we embark on our next phase of development and look forward to a new level of collaboration and communication with the community!

Sincerely,
Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Interesting how the new scenery works, it looks like there's no real future for scenery addon makers because the default is amazing.  I bet Microsoft will sell regions as dlc, and with the scenery cached from a server I worry that there may be a subscription service.  Even if it ends up like I suggest, still may be better than having to go buy all these 3rd party addons from all over the web.  I don't think this bodes well for P3D either, I don't see any of these improvements being licensed to a market competitor.

But hey, I'm all in, can't wait to get my hands on the alpha and test it.

A subscription model would definitely be way cheaper than purchasing or even re-purchasing individual sceneries/airports.

I really enjoy P3DV4.5 for the military stuff. I will continue to use it but I am very cautious on new purchases.

As for scenery. FS2020 looks amazing. Will there be a need for 3rd party scenery?.....Maybe that is why Orbx is releasing scenery like there's no tomorrow  :whistle

The other flightsims will continue to improve but Microsoft is a juggernaut  :Hammer

Also, no helos   :helicopter. I have not seen or heard of any helos for FS2020  :dunno

I heard no helos for initial release, that'll be added later.

No VR with initial release but support added later.

I'm fine with this, It'll get us in the sim sooner.

I'm actually more interested in AI traffic and AI ATC, if they ignore those....well I may have another reason to keep P3D around.

Recently presented at the Global Preview Event, Episode 1 (World) is an in-depth look at the world we’re building for the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Head into the Insider Area to watch Episode 1!

FEEDBACK PIPELINE
TLDR  – There is a Feedback Dashboard. The dashboard contains a summary of all feedback we collect from community discussions on a daily basis. Feedback is triaged, prioritized, and assigned a plan of action. We will provide the output of this pipeline to the community in a document tentatively called the “Feedback Snapshot” on a regular basis.
There has been an incredible amount feedback from the press coverage of our recent Global Preview Event. This feedback, along with all feedback we’ve been collecting, is critically important to the team to ensure the voice of the community is being put into action through a collaborative and transparent process (i.e. use the Feedback Snapshot to give the community transparency into the feedback we’re prioritizing for action). Features like ATC, Seasons, VR, Rotorcraft, SDK, etc. can be found in the Feedback Snapshot along with our current plan for next steps and timelines for resolution. The Feedback Snapshot will be released at regular intervals and we will announce the date for our first preview release in our next update.

TECH ALPHA
•    10.15 – Recruitment for Tech Alpha 1 ends. If you would like to sign up, please head into the Insider Area and fill out the survey.
•   10.17 – Build release preparation begins. Insider acceptance confirmation communication begins and will run through 10.24.
•   10.24 – Release Window Opens. We will begin granting access to the Tech Alpha build to Insiders that have received acceptance confirmation.

BUILD PROGRAM UPDATE
We are currently targeting mid/end November for our second build release (Tech Alpha 2). We expect to open recruitment for Tech Alpha 2 closer to the end of October but expect a final date in our 10.17 update.

DR Update and Episode 2 information coming next update.

At X019, we’re thrilled to reveal many of the great aircraft manufacturers we are partnering with to make Microsoft Flight Simulator the most realistic flight simulation yet. As you saw in our new trailer, we have a broad range of aircraft, including commercial airliners, business jets, and general aviation aircraft, all from the most renowned manufacturers.
The breadth of partnerships we have forged for the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator goes far beyond what was done for previous titles. We are determined to make this sim, and all of its components, as authentic as possible.

The aircraft partnerships we’re announcing today include (in alphabetical order):

•   Airbus
•   The Boeing Company
•   CubCrafters
•   Daher
•   Diamond Aircraft Industries
•   ICON Aircraft
•   Robin Aircraft
•   Textron Aviation

We’re excited to continue working with these great partners and will share more information on additional partnerships as we approach Microsoft Flight Simulator’s launch in 2020.

If you’re joining us in London this week for X019, please swing by our booth at the Copper Box Arena and get hands-on with Microsoft Flight Simulator yourself. Thank you for all the support!

“FORE!”

SDK UPDATE
The team is making good progress on the SDK development. While still in the early stages, the plan is to provide an initial version of the SDK to the 3rd party developer community before the end of the year. Our goal has been to involve 3rd parties early in the development process, and to give them the ability to influence our priorities and how we author the SDK. After the first wave of initial 3rd party developer visits onsite with the team, we’ve been incredibly excited by the optimism and feedback we’ve received thus far. These same tools will be provided to the community in effort to ensure the tools we use to create content, tools that undergo constant testing in our production environment, are shared with all our creators. Initially, the SDK will offer the ability to author planes, sceneries and custom missions. For those with a preference for using FSX tools, SimConnect will be supported. We will also support additional modern standards like HTML for UI and glTF for 3D models.

MEDIA UPDATE

We’ve posted some new screenshots in the Insider Area. Head inside to check them out!

PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT SERIES UPDATE

We visited Cubcrafters with François, one of the pilots and aircraft aerodynamicists from our team, to go over the XCub’s simulation.

We fine tuned the engine’s power curve and adjusted the aircraft’s mass distribution and control surface limits and were able to get a very realistic handling.

We also improved the prop wash effect on the tail in order to get a more realistic power on handling, especially on the ground and at low speeds.

Each one of us also had the luck to fly a real-world Carbon Cub and had the chance to compare the real-world aircraft with the sim. This helped make some more improvements of the control surface elasticity and input curves of the yoke.

Another interesting thing:

Their test pilot flew the XCUB in the sim to their usual strips in the area. Particularly one located on Rimrock lake, the Tieton State Airport, where he did multiple landings and takoffs. The test pilot was very happy about how close the sim was in comparison on his usual flights out of this strip with the real aircraft. A specific ridge for example can just be flown over climbing at max power after takeoff and it was exactly the same in the sim!

We are still finalizing the date for when Tech Alpha 2 invitations will be sent out but expect an update in January. In the meantime, our goal regarding participation remains the same – if you want to participate in early build testing and have registered (e.g. Tech Alpha 1, Tech Alpha 2, etc.), you are going to get access. The team is actively working to get additional people build access as quickly as possible. So stay tuned!

Next update – 12.19!

SDK UPDATE

After a ton of hard work over the past few months we are happy to announce that an alpha version of the SDK will be available in the upcoming ALPHA release!

Only 3rd party development partners will have access to the SDK in which they will be able to create and edit airports, sceneries, planes and missions.

The SDK makes available the same in-game tools used internally for the development of the core simulator. We can’t wait to see what our 3rd parties and Content Creators create based on the samples we’re providing!

We still have plenty of work ahead and we are looking forward to the feedback we receive over the next few weeks.

If you are a 3rd party developer and have not been in contact with the team, please send an email to msfsim@microsoft.com for more information.

1.   ALPHA ACCESS – For those that have not received Alpha build access (press F to pay respects), we are actively working to increase the number of participants. Expect an updated timeline on 02.13.

2.   TARGETED TESTING – For those users that have received Alpha build access, next week we kickoff our Targeted Testing phase. In the Alpha section of our forums we will post weekly challenges for users to test specific areas/features and provide their feedback.
To date, the feedback we’ve received from both Tech Alpha and Alpha users has been incredibly valuable to the team. Every piece of feedback, every suggestion is another opportunity for us to improve the experience. So thank you, and keep it coming!

FEATURE DISCOVERY SERIES

•   EPISODE 6 IS COMING SOON!

We are putting the finishing touches on our next episode in the Feature Discovery Series! Episode 6 will provide an in-depth look at the airports we are building in the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator. You should expect an update on the official date for release in our next update (02.13).

DR PREVIEW MOVED TO 02.13
The DR preview is still in the process of being finalized and we expect to have it ready for Insiders to preview in our next update on 02.13.

FEEDBACK SNAPSHOT MOVED TO 02.13
We’ve been working hard to update the FS Snapshot to incorporate the early feedback from Alpha. Unfortunately, we had to bump this update back to 02.13 in order to ensure the most recent information was included.

Got some flight time in with this over the last few days.  If this is alpha state, this is gona be great, but there's still a lot of work to go.  The scenery is using bing map data, so when you get close at ground level it looks like that funky Google earth street view.  I wonder how much adjustment this new autogen tech will need, but it looks cool to do auto gen this way, and is miles ahead of what p3d and fsx is doing.  They are making it very approachable to incorporate the Xbox crowd,  but there will be a place for enthusiasts as well.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THAT?

Have you ever looked at a screenshot or video from the upcoming MSFS and wondered what part of the world is being shown?

Thanks to u/Ansenton, you no longer have to.

With the help of the Flight Sim community, Ansenton created a world map that pinpoints every place on Earth we’ve showcased so far in the upcoming MSFS.

Click on a pinpoint, and see each screenshot in all of its beauty.

Since the announcement of MSFS, over 100+ locations have been pointed out and Ansenton documented it all.

Ansenton spent over 40 hours working with the community to identify each location.

Thank you Ansenton and all the community folks that helped support this effort. We are incredibly grateful to be working on a franchise that has such a dedicated and passionate community!

SDK UPDATE
The SDK is now being used by over 50 companies and hundreds of programmers and artists. We have spent time listening, discussing and learning from our 3rd party developers, and we are working closely with them to keep improving the tools. The new aircraft editor is close to being finished with several improvements to the workflow. We also made lots of progress on WebAssembly support, which is the technology that will allow the porting of native code to our platform. We are excited to share what we developed with our partners within the next few weeks.

Several 3rd parties have started to share the roadmaps with us and we happy to report that dozens of planes and airports are in development and we are hopeful that quite a few of them will be ready by the time our new simulator is released.

“Together.”

It is with immense pride that we stand with our community during this very challenging time. We continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our team, friends and families. We do so with an unwavering commitment to remain connected to the community as we continue to develop the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Your feedback, support, and encouragement continues to be an invaluable inspiration to the team.

With guidance from our leadership, we have taken steps to establish remote work spaces that will minimize impact on our development efforts. We have prioritized team focus on key deliverables core to completing the project, while pausing work on deliverables that are not. In the near term work will be focused on delivering an updated Alpha build, followed by assessing our Alpha participation. Once we’ve completed that process, we will turn our focus back to other deliverables we have in the pipeline (e.g. Feature Discovery Series Episodes, DR Roadmap Updates, Partnership Series updates, etc.). This is a temporary measure, we will continue to monitor the situation while providing frequent updates to the community.

For now, expect that many of the deliverables we’ve been working on will be delayed by a few weeks while we get the team working at optimal efficiency remotely.

In moments like this we are mindful of the importance of taking care of those that take care of us. From all of us, to all of you, we wish you good health and safety.

We are all in this together.

Sincerely,

 – MSFS TEAM

These are not that bad considering how advanced visuals we get. Flight simulator has always been at the forefront of what what graphics and hardware had to offer. I'm curries what the FPS will be with the recommended specs.

FPS has always been the big issue for most when MS Flight sim is considered...I remember when FSX first came out. Slide show  :punishment

Women’s History Month: The First Women’s Air Derby
March 31st, 2020

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

So far this year, we have focused on utilizing groundbreaking technology to bring you our latest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Our Feature Discovery series has highlighted our aerodynamics, live weather, world-building and more. In our pursuit to build a beautifully realistic and expansive sim, we would like to give credit to the early pioneers of flight; specifically, the brave women who entered the field of aviation. They have paved the way for flight enthusiasts today, setting precedent upon precedent.

From left to right: Raymonde de Laroche, Hélène Dutrieu, Lilian Bland’s “Mayfly”

In 1910, Raymonde de Laroche, became the first the first woman in the world to receive a pilot license when the Aero-Club of France issued her license #36 of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.  Hélène Dutrieu, the “girl hawk” of aviation from Tournai Belgium, set many altitude and distance records including winning France’s Coupe Femina for the women’s world nonstop light record on December 31, 1911 flying 254 kilometers (158 miles) in 178 minutes. In Northern Ireland, Lilian Bland designed a glider, the Bland Mayfly, even before she earned her pilot’s license, making her the first women in the world to design, build, and fly an aeroplane. The United States wasn’t far behind, and soon women all over the globe took to the skies despite the challenges they faced due to gender norms.

From left to right: Louise Thaden, Gladys O’Connell, Ruth Nichols

Circa 1929, when there were as little as seventy licensed female pilots, one of the most revolutionary races began in the US: The Women’s National Air Derby.

It was more than a race; it was a chance for women to finally show the world that they could fly.

These women spanned from aviatrix record breaker to Hollywood starlet to the wife of a preacher, but they all had a common message to spread: women were fiercely good at flying, and they would prove it. To qualify, they had to have at least 100 hours of solo flight, with a minimum of 25 hours of cross-country flying.

As the idea of letting women fly was not commonly accepted in the 1920s, there were many restrictions in the first race, such as access to only slower and less powerful aircraft.

It was an early morning in August where twenty women put on their flight gear, climbed into their cockpits, and raced across America from Santa Monica, California to Cleveland, Ohio. Navigating the 2700-mile course with only road maps on their laps, they started their journey.

Only 15 out of 20 women finished the first Women’s National Air Derby in 1929

The race itself was something out of the movies — Questionable mechanical failures, threats of sabotage from outsiders, two crashes, and one case of typhoid fever. The threats of sabotage and protestors sported signs with phrases like, “Race Should Be Stopped”. Blanche Noyes, a non-smoker, had to put out a fire mid-flight and later found a cigarette butt in her baggage. Pancho Barnes crashed into a car that drove onto the runway as she was landing. Claire Fahy’s wing wires had mysteriously been eaten through. However, despite some of the mishaps, the pilots decided to stick together and finish the race.

“What chances we took in those pioneer days of flying! What narrow escapes we had during takeoffs and landings on the many rough, short airfields of the twenties!” — Ruth Nichols, Derby Contestant

A crowd of over 18,000 people gathered at the finish line in Cleveland to greet the pilots. In the end, Louise Thaden finished in first place with a time of 20 hours, 19 minutes and 4 seconds. In third place was famous Amelia Earhart.

Racers from the 1929 first women’s air derby

The race was their first chance to meet face-to-face as women pilots and set the stage to carry on the legacy. Many of the women banded together afterwards to form The 99’s Club (now known as The Ninety-Nines) to celebrate women in aviation all over the world.

We salute these outspoken and brave women as we continue to develop Microsoft Flight Simulator and hope we can empower more females to pursue an interest in the field of aviation. To everyone, thank you for your passion and love for flying. Your enthusiasm has made our sim efforts possible.

Welcome to the 1.2.5 version of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Alpha! In this update, you will find new content, bugs we’ve addressed, and an updated list of known issues.

A note from the development team:

First let us start off by saying “thank you”. We truly appreciate all of the amazing feedback we’ve received since the last Alpha release.

For the build notes, we have the following sections to suit the interest levels of our community, after this introduction we have the new content, below that the bullet point of changes, and for those who wish to have a more technical breakdown, members of the team have given an editorial on certain aspects of the sim.

You will notice that we’ve made several fixes based on your feedback (Review patch notes below). Your feedback is integral to our development of Flight Simulator, and we encourage everybody to join in, providing feedback via the Weekly Feedback Testing Category.

Based on the large amount of feedback regarding peripherals, peripherals support has been improved, and we’ve added more device binding presets. Please note that due to these changes, the previous mappings from will no longer work with this updated Alpha. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Finally, we know there have been a lot of questions regarding airliners, and we’d like to take a second to address the current lack of airliners. We are hard at work putting on the final touches and want to make sure we get the core functionality of the airliners “right” before we release any into wild. We promise that they are on their way, and we will let you know as soon as they’re cleared for departure.

Thank you for being a part of our Alpha, and keep that feedback coming!

-Microsoft Flight Simulator Team-

A look into the minds of our pilots and engineers!

We have worked on some of the causes for ground instability. In FSX Ground Effect was calculated once per aircraft at the CG of the aircraft. The closer the CG got to the ground, the more the aircraft’s lift coefficient was scaled up (up to 25%). To get more realism, we changed this to calculate the ground effect separately for each surface of the aircraft. This reflects reality better as one wing may be closer to the ground than the other and be more impacted by ground effect. Also, because the FSX ground effect was still referring to the CG coordinates, we now calculate the collision distance between each individual surface and the ground. And with this fix we now get a different and better lift coefficient scale for each surface. This helps ground stability because when the plane starts rolling on one side, that side immediately gets closer to the ground and then gets more ground effect. The other side immediately loses ground effect. This tends to push the aircraft back toward a level horizontal position.

We have worked on roll stability, which is the consequence of many different aspects of an aircraft. Including dihedral, wing sweep, CG and wing position. One particular aspect we added is that high wings have up to 5% more “effective” dihedral giving them more roll stability. So, we added a system that automatically adds “effective” dihedral depending on the vertical wing position. This adds more roll stability to our all high wing aircraft (C172, C152, GRAND CARAVAN, …). This does not however affect low wing aircraft. Mid wing aircraft will get a little bit of this. Low wing aircraft however already usually have a higher actual dihedral which compensates for this. For all high wing aircraft, there is now improved dynamic roll stability. The effect is not super strong, but from a 30° bank, they will tend to slowly return to a neutral bank, the strength of the effect fades as the bank approaches zero. This helps with an overbanking tendency and improves roll stability.

Improvements have been made to takeoff trim, and the effects of wind when on the ground, which makes take offs more realistic and significantly improves the wheelbarrowing effect that sometimes happened.

Work was also done to improve the effects of winds and turbulence with all weather.

We’ve also been working hard on peripherals. While still WIP here are some updates:
•   Categories are minimized by default
•   Added a button to collapse/expand all categories
•   Categories keep their state (collapsed/ expanded) when switching devices
•   Improved controls settings menu performance (but more WIP)
•   Improved sensitivity menu (curves displayed)
•   Essential controls sorted
•   Added user input preset management
•   Better default mappings for more peripherals

We know there’s more to do and the team is working on things such as:
•   New search bar layout in the controls settings menu
•   Improved sensitivity and dead zone curves (algorithm update)
•   Inputs displayed in the same fashion as notifications in the controls settings menu

ALPHA BUILD 1.2.10 IS NOW AVAILABLE

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Please make sure to launch Alpha build, check for updates, and install most recent Alpha update.

Welcome to the 1.2.10 version of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Alpha!

In this update you’ll find a description of the new content we’ve added, bugs we’ve addressed, and an updated list of known issues.

We know many of you have been waiting to fly jets, and today we’re incredibly excited to announce the wait is over!

In close partnership with Airbus, we’re proud to release the Airbus A320 for community testing. This is a key step in our development process as we work together with the community to finalize this aircraft for launch.

Though this is the first version of the plane, we hope you will help test many of the systems we’ve already included. For example:

•   Fly by Wire system including some of the flight-envelope protection features and new airliner-specific autopilot and auto-throttle functions.
•   MCDU (flight computer)
•   FCU (Autopilot control panel) functions implemented.
•   SID’s and STAR’s
•   High altitude flight
•   Long range missions
•   Land with autobrake and ground spoilers
•   Newly implemented ground handling features such as jetways, refueling trucks, baggage and catering, pushback and ground power carts.

There are some complex systems in the aircraft that we did not include at this stage in order to ensure focus on the ones that were ready to be tested. You should expect that some indications may be missing or not final, and some displays may show anomalies. Many of the autopilot and auto-throttle functions work but some are still WIP. You will be able to fly ILS and visual approaches, but full approach functionality is not included in this version. Expect updates to the MSDU functionality and audio during our next round of updates.

It has been an incredible experience partnering with Airbus to bring the A320 to the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator. And we are looking forward to working with the community to ensure the very best flight simulation experience across all our aircraft.
Alpha testers, Airbus A320 is cleared for takeoff!

Community Spotlight: SimTom112

Drone Pilot Photographer by day, Virtual Pilot by night.

Today we’d like to feature an outstanding flight simmer and Alpha participant, SimTom112. You have probably seen some of his screenshots in many of our development updates and social media posts. He’s got a great eye for photography and is an integral part of our Alpha community.

SimTom112, or Tomas, is a professional photographer and drone pilot by trade. He uses his skills in-game when it comes to framing the perfect MSFS shot.

”In essence, it shouldn’t make a difference if photographing or filming something virtually or in real life. The same principles regarding framing or composting can be applied here as well. With the drone camera I’m free to place the camera wherever I want, no messing around with heavy cameras or tripods. The added bonus is that you’re not bound to any technical limitations (lens restrictions and such).”

We asked how drone piloting, at all, has played a role in his flight sim skills.

“To be honest, there’s still a big difference with aircraft because they move in a lateral way, while drones should be compared to helicopters(this might ruffle some feathers ). I use a controller to control the aircraft because that’s what I’m used to when flying drones. And of course, it translates perfectly to the in-game drone camera.”

Tomas started simming with FS2004 16 years ago, and then moved on to FSX, P3D, and MSFS. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite moments he has captured from Microsoft Flight Simulator.

ALPHA BUILD 1.2.12.0 is now available!
17 April 2020

Posted by: Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

Welcome to the 1.2.12.0 version of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Alpha!

Hello everybody,

Today’s update is a small Quality of Life update to address some important issues from Alpha 1.2.10.0.Thank you for your feedback!

Bug Fixes and QoL Improvements

➡️ Azure TTS – This build includes an improved method of generating speech for radio communications.  The Azure Custom Voice method uses cloud computing and sophisticated real-time models to better simulate real speech. This is a feature that we are exploring for future application, but the audio team needs actual usage data on it in order to determine its viability.  Please feel free to let us know what you think.

➡️  Fixed Icing issue in Airbus A320 Neo – Instruments will no longer fail, reducing airspeed to zero when encountering icing

➡️ SDK updates – SDK updates and fixes for 3rd party partner developers

Recommended Installation Guide

If you have already downloaded Alpha 1.2.10.0 and had no major installation issues, please check for updates in the Microsoft Store and update your build to 1.2.12.0. If you are on a version prior to 1.2.10.0, we recommend you uninstall and reinstall the Alpha. For uninstall/reinstall guidelines and troubleshooting, check out the News & Announcement section on the Alpha Forums.

🛑 Known Issues: General 🛑

⦁ Some jetways are misplaced at airports
⦁ Black stripes can be visible on the side of different world tiles
⦁ Trees sometimes overlap with buildings
⦁ There are missing buildings in Chicago-O’Hare airport
⦁ There are missing buildings in Frankfurt am Main Airport
⦁ FPS tends to drop after the end of a loading sequence
⦁ FPS tends to drops during intro cutscenes
⦁ There are possible FPS drops when moving the camera around the plane
⦁ Objectives can fail to show any inputs if they were previously cleared by the user under Controls
⦁ Panels previously undocked from the toolbar can appear enable on any Activity
⦁ There are issues with the TTS voice on the Take-off Flight Training when using the Female Voice
⦁ The TTS voice during the Take Off Flight Training audio and subtitles are mismatched
⦁ We still display some debug subtitle-text with TTS audio on the Landing Flight Training
⦁ Planes can teleport 900 – 5000 FT above when returning to freeflight from any Landing Challenge
⦁ The ”Apply the Brakes” objective fails to get completed after the player applies the brakes during that Landing Tutorial
⦁ Objectives can break using the despawn /respawn at the start of the Take Off Flight Training
⦁ The TBM930 engine shuts down after a teleport
⦁ Intermittent weather bug that can sometimes create unrealistic gusting winds, more likely to hit this when the user changes settings mid-session.
⦁ HUEN main buildings are not spawning
⦁ Autopilot can become inoperable when switching between Vertical Speed and Altitude in All Aircrafts.
⦁ Switching instructor models mid flight (in tutorials) will not switch the instructor voices.
⦁ If you are upgrading from a version older than 1.2.5.0 you will need to fully uninstall before installing this update
⦁ There are potential installation and update issues if the install path contains ‘Extended Unicode characters.’ For now we recommend installation paths containing standard Roman alphabet letters and numbers only.
⦁ Signing out from Xbox Live during a gameplay session can cause issues signing back in to that gameplay session.

As we bring April to a close, the team remains focused on the core deliverables needed to bring the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator to market. That said, we also recognize the importance of others deliverables that many of you in the community value and we wanted to take a moment to provide a status update on a few of these:

•   DEVELOPMENT ROADMAP

The team is currently working on updating the DR. We are pushing to release an updated DR on 05.07.

•   PARTNERSHIP SERIES

The current health challenges have added a bit of a delay to our Partnership Series updates. As we continue to work through this situation with our partners, the team is excited to officially announce that the next Partnership Series Spotlights will feature – NAVBLUE, meteoblue, and FlightAware. We expect to provide a timeline for when we will be releasing each spotlight in our 05.07 update, along with the next set of Partnership Series Spotlights we are planning to announce.

•   SDK UPDATE

The team is targeting 05.07 to provide an update on the SDK work.

Though we are all working through a unique and challenging situation, our commitment to deliver the very best Flight Simulation experience in collaboration with the community remains strong. Whether posting to the forums, providing Alpha build feedback, commenting on posted screenshots, debating runway undulations, discussing inaccurate reporting, or just keeping up with the latest… thank you. Bringing people together, even if to debate, is a great way of keeping people connected in a time when so many of us are separated from each other. This community that we share together, has been an incredible source of inspiration and motivation to the team.

Wishing all of you, your family and friends, the very best of health and well-being.

“We would like to see rapids in rivers, with fly fisher-people on the banks. There should be snakes, on the banks, and salmon leaping up the rapids. We need bears… we need bears catching the salmon, and it would be ideal if we could fish. Furthermore, we’d like an accurate climate change model with Icebergs and Antarctic Ice shelves breaking off from the mainland with Polar Bears and Seals. And finally, if MSFS does not accurately model the Sun’s eventual evolution into a Red Giant, we question their long-term commitment to the sim.”

•   Avsim Users

Alright, so let me see… we’ve got an order of rocky water rivers with a side of curly fries and fish sticks. One order of wild salmon with a side of claws. One ice cream with gummi bears and sea salt toppings. Also one bottomless tequila sunrise. If that looks right, please pull forward to the first window.

•   Prioritize access for those that registered early for pre-release build testing.

SDK UPDATE
Our focus on the SDK development has been intensified in recent weeks and the SDK is getting more mature as we improve it based on the feedback we receive from 3rd party developers. We are now in contact with more than 200 companies and 400+ developers have access to the SDK.

On the airports side, we are both widening the scope of what can be customized in the sim (e.g. adding the possibility to blend custom aerial imagery on the terrain, creating custom painted lines per airport) and working towards simplifying the adaptation of existing assets to the new simulator (e.g. adding support for projecting meshes).
On the aircraft side, we are working closely with 3rd party developers to ease the transition to WebAssembly and glTF. Just as with airports, we are both extending the possibilities of what can be customized and working to ease the porting of existing assets to the new simulator. We also improve our support for WebAssembly by implementing specification proposals that focus on performance.

The in-game developer mode is also seeing a lot usability improvements based on feedback from the 3rd party developers community. Overall, it’s a great journey we are on and many developers are giving us a peak what they are working on and it’s amazing. We can’t way to share more about our 3rd part partners and their creations in the coming months.

ALPHA 4 IS HERE!

We are excited to announce the release of Alpha 4 (build #1.4.2.0)!

Alpha 4 Patch Notes
Welcome the Microsoft Flight Simulator Alpha 4 (build 1.4.2.0)!
In this update you’ll find new content, bug fixes, and an updated list of known issues.

A note from the development team:

There are several fixes to our simulation of the B747 in this update. Most notably, the glass cockpit displays should be more accurate now and the overall autopilot functionality has been improved. Further visual improvements were made to the cockpits, airframe exterior, and to the visual effects. The overall experience has also undergone a polish pass.

Transversal fixes to improve both commercial planes, B747 and A320, have been implemented. Updates include V-Speed improvements, which should noticeably improve the flight performance, controls, and overall predictability during flight. Improvements were added to better represent your flight plan with more accurate calculations and visual representation in the displays.

The TBM 930 received a complete pass based on user feedback and improvements from our backlog.

Finally, the team has fixed lots and lots of bugs and added further polish across the entire experience. We still have room to improve, we look forward to your feedback.

New Content

FLIGHT MODEL – UNIVERSAL IMPROVEMENTS are ready to test!
With this update, we are happy to inform you that flight model updates have been applied to all our planes. We have made overall changes to the aerodynamics for the vertical and horizontal tail to make them behave more like wing surfaces and no longer like flat surfaces. This is a big change in that it completely changes the model behavior and required overall readjustment to all our planes.

The expected result is that we now get more realistic elevator and rudder authority curves.

We also improved the weight and balance settings of all planes using better %MAC (percent mean aerodynamic chord) data.

General Summary of improvements:
•   Improved elevator and rudder authority for all planes
•   Improved pitch and yaw stability for all planes
•   Improved weight and balance for all planes
•   Improved stall behavior of all aircraft
CAMERA
A few improvements have been made to the cameras, let us know what you think:
•   Added inputs to allow you to control the cockpit camera’s backward and forward translations
   o   Left/ right arrows: move left/ right
   o   Up/ down arrows: move forward/ backward
   o   ALT + up/ down arrows: move up/ down
•   Right Click + Drag now allows you to control freelook
OTHER
All users will have displayed only the build notes that relate to his latest version of the sim – previously all users would only see the build notes for the latest version release, even if that was not the build version installed.
Community Feedback and Fixes

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!

Controls and Inputs: Some users were reporting issues with losing their control assignments, which would revert to default settings.

TBM 930: The speed and altitude trend line have been corrected from white from magenta

TBM 930: Yoke vibration issues reported when using the copilot

Peripherals: Corrected issues reported when using the Honeycomb yoke

Airport Issues Reported and Fixed:
•   AGY – planes started off center on runway 33 – now fixed
•   YALF – testers were not able to find YALF in the sim – YALF no longer exists and has been replaced by YMUN
•   YALM – was listed incorrectly and is now attributed to Allambie
•   YALM – planes started off to the side of the runway – now fixed
•   YALP – was listed incorrectly and is not attributed to Alpurrurlam
•   YALR – coordinates now correctly correspond to Pine Hill Airport
•   YALT – buildings were reported in the runway – now fixed
•   YALZ – was listed incorrectly and is now attributes to Balma Airport

Plane Specific Changes/Improvements

ALL
•   Overall focus in all areas to improve autopilot user experience and its effect on all the planes
•   All airliners had transitions that were not loading in the MCDU when creating a flight plan from world map
A320neo
•   Tuning of the trim – should be more realistic to the real-world experience and more balanced
•   Auto Thrust/Auto Pitch issue fixed that was affecting the user’s ability to maintain speed in strong head winds – this usually resulted in a stall
•   A320 engines will now start when following the checklist “starting engines” procedure
B747-8i
•   It was previously possible to have APU GEN and EXT POWER connected. Now they are exclusive.
•   Engine #1 and Engine #2 were reversed – they are now set correctly
•   User was unable to continue beyond page 2 of the route pages on the CDU
•   Changing the selected altitude while in Vertical Speed mode was not updating the target altitude
Bonanza G36
•   Activating the landing gear and/or flaps on approach no longer turns OFF the battery
C152
•    Corrections to the altimeter
TBM 930
•   Aircraft would rock when following a flight plane with the Auto Pilot ON
•   FLC button now activates the FLC mode instead of the ALT mode
•   The flight plan now better matches what the user sets on the world map screen
•   The TBM930 engine no longer shuts down after a teleport

Airport Specific Changes

AIRPORTS

An additional improvement and completion passes have been made on the global airports to include missing content based on Bing Aerial imagery:
•   Taxiway logic and visual markers added
•   Surface types on airport runways, taxiways, and aprons updated
•   Parking areas for aircraft updated
•   Additional and improved ground markings on taxiways and aprons
•   Other general visual improvements

We have also run an additional pass on the ground texture colors of more than 12,000 airports to improve the integration with Bing data.

Bug Fixes and QoL Improvements
Stability
•    Overall stability and framerate improvements
Airports
•   Llanbedr EGOD tower size corrected
•   Continue fixing issues with jetway placement – this is ongoing
Audio
•   Voices now switch correctly in tutorials when changing in mid-flight
Cameras
•   Overall camera improvements to improve FPS when moving around the inside of planes
Controls
•   Objective would fail to show inputs when cleared, now fixed
Performance
•   FPS improvements when loading sequences complete and during cutscenes
UI/UX
•   UI stability improved overall – menu logic corrected, profile losses
•   General attention to accessibility and user information – our ongoing objective here is to better inform your options when navigating the UI so your choices are more intuitive
•   TTS voice mismatch corrected during Take Off Flight Training
•   Autopilot had become inoperable when switching between Vertical Speed and Altitude in All Aircraft – this issue is now fixed
Weather
•   The effect that live weather wind would have on the planes was too strong and now better matches real world behavior
•   Unrealistic wind gusts were sometimes created when customizing settings – should be less frequent
World
•   World tiles – black stripes on world tile edges fixed
Known issues
AIRCRAFT
•   Users may experience issues with adjusting flight plans through the use of glass cockpits
AIRLINERS

PARTNERSHIP SERIES UPDATE – INTRODUCING METEOBLUE!

https://youtu.be/3AfQGA8i7uQ

SDK UPDATE

We continue to make good progress and plan to release an update to the SDK next week. We worked on improving the documentation as well. In addition, we are working on video tutorials to help illustrate usage of the SDK.

We added several new SDK samples showcasing:

•   Various Flight Simulator-specific glTF extensions/materials
•   Aerial images overriding on the terrain
•   Projected meshes on the ground
•   Vegetation biomes overriding

Progress is being made on the WebAssembly front as well.  Several WebAssembly extensions are being implemented, which should result in better performance. Static WebAssembly libraries can now be authored, and we are making progress on helper libraries designed to ease the transition of legacy C++ code to the new Flight Simulator architecture. SimConnect is getting more attention and we are fixing some bugs in it and started developing a test coverage framework to help identify regressions and make it more robust. HTML-based UI and aircraft instruments are now authored as separate packages, making it possible for third party developers to author their own HTML-based instruments. As real-world examples of SDK usage, we plan to share the source assets for both an official aircraft and a high quality airport as SDK samples.

PARTNERSHIP SERIES UPDATE – INTRODUCING FlightAware!

What is FlightAware?
We’re an aviation intelligence company that provides real-time and predictive flight insights to all the biggest players in aviation. We synthesize data from thousands of sources across the globe and our team of amazing engineers layer on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to give the most accurate predictions on where a flight is and where it’s going.

Our data is used everywhere from Google flight statuses, airport notification boards, airline systems managing gate flows, individual pilots sharing their private flights, to the millions of travelers and their friends and families checking out our web and mobile apps to get info on their flight. Now, our data stream called Firehose is going to power the real-time, global traffic in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 so that while you’re using the sim, you can see planes near you in real life.

HyperFeed® is FlightAware’s machine learning and rules engine that uses thousands of proprietary models and algorithms to compile, evaluate and aggregate over 10,000 aircraft position messages per second to generate a single source of truth (SSOT) for aviation data.

Where do you get your data?
We’re a data company. Our data merges sources such as commercial schedules, air navigation service info of over 45 countries, VHF and satellite datalink, worldwide weather, and ADS-B data both from earth and in outer space. At the core of our data is our own ADS-B network – right now 28,000 receivers (and counting) – managed by a network of aviation enthusiasts across the globe that capture what’s happening in the skies above them and transmit the data directly to us. Planes are required to give off this information, we cast the net that captures it, then we synthesize the information on our site and in our products.

The fun part about these receivers is that you can make them yourself. Get a Raspberry-Pi, pop our software on it, hook it up to the interwebz and start sharing. Costs run less than $100 for the basic setup. Here are the instructions. For folks who live in areas where we need more coverage and can pass an application process, we’ll literally send you a pre-made one in a box – for free.

You’ll become part of a network of ADS-B hobbyists across the globe and start seeing the skies in a totally different way.

We call the pre-assembled ADS-B receivers FlightFeeders

Why airplanes?
FlightAware promotes aviation geekiness in all its forms. From the ADS-B network we just mentioned, to routine trainings for our employees, we want to be able to show you just how cool flying and flights really are. Our CEO, Daniel Baker started the company in 2005 to try and share the position of his Cessna 172 with his friends and family. Since then, our feeds have become the central data source for the aviation industry. He still flies, and so do about 20% of the folks that work at FlightAware. Fun note, our Technical Project manager, James Parkman recently got his pilot license and his plane in under 6 months – a company record. Over the years, FlightAware has begun a Flying program that subsidizes pilot training for its employees – we’ve even got our own training airplane!

We believe that flying opens up the world around you, it makes distances shorter, the world more accessible, and satisfies one of the core aspirations of mankind. The Microsoft Flight Simulator project is close to our hearts because it opens up the world of aviation to a broad audience.

“Microsoft Flight Simulation’s team is fully dedicated to bring to simmers the most accurate replica of the world ever seen from a plane perspective. Thanks to FlightAware data, we are thrilled to be able to populate this world with the actual aviation traffic all around the world, whether it be on ground or in the air. Out of the box, Flight Aware data will allow simmers to fly sharing their air space with the current air traffic but also to check arrivals and departure from airports, select any flight to see its fly plan and even have the possibility to, virtually of course, take controls.” – Jorg Neumann Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator

ALPHA 5 HAS BEEN RELEASED!

Welcome the Microsoft Flight Simulator Alpha 5 (build 1.5.4.0)!

In this update you’ll find improved content, bug fixes, and an updated list of known issues.

A note from the development team:
This update is focused primarily on community feedback, bug fixes, and an overall polish pass.

All planes have received another round of polish and tuning. We continue to triage bugs and reset priorities when needed. You should also find an updated round of polish (on-going) to the world, airports, scenery, and the weather.

We are hard at work focused on community feedback, polish, polish, and more polish. Please keep the feedback coming as we genuinely value the community’s help improving the overall flight-experience!

Improved Content

FLIGHT MODEL
•   The engine/propeller effects on all propeller planes has been improved for P-Factor, Torque, Gyro-Precession, and Prop Wash
•   Flap lift and drag adjustments across all planes were made
•   Belly landings are now possible for the Bonanza G36
•   Overall A320 Fly By Wire (FBW) improvements continued
•   TBM 930 Engine torque adjustments made
•   Ongoing improvement to the ground effect formula to improve the overall “realism”

Community Feedback and Fixes
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!

TBM 930:
•   The radio altimeter would continue to give indications regardless of the set bank angle

AIRPORTS
•   [KMLB] Many taxiway signs were missing or were far away from the runway
•   [EDDN] Users identified issues with several buildings, including some that were missing, that have now been corrected
•   [GMMX] Users identified issues several buildings, including some that were missing, that have now been corrected
•   General Improvement passes made to our procedurally generated airports to add any missing towers based on locations identified by users

PERIPHERALS:
•   Pilots were reporting difficulty to understand or figure out how to delete their individual peripheral mappings. Please try again and let us know if the changes made have improved this.
•   X52 Pro was reported as non-intuitive – we made efforts to improve the mapping and the trim controls to help

WEATHER
•   Inconsistencies were reported between what was listed on the load screen and what appeared in game

Plane Specific Changes/Improvements

A320neo
•   Vertical Speed (VS) improvements:
•   No longer using pitch to aim target speed but corrected to use thrust instead
•   VS no longer decreased upon activation of VS mode
•   Stall warning no longer triggers when in Alpha protection
•   Speed mode now correctly toggles when reaching the cruise altitude
•   Fixed that the aircraft was sometimes not following its approach when reaching a transition
•   Engaging the AP1 button would also engage AP2 – this is no longer true
•   Auto Pilot was too aggressive – this has been tuned and improved
•   Engines used to shut down when adjusting fuel mid-flight
•   Improvements to APPR mode, fixed some issues where it was not working correctly
•   We had a regression issue found in how the plane would level off in the last update, this is now working as intended

B747-8i
•   Vertical Speed (VS) Improvements:
•   Vertical Speed was not behaving as expected and would cause the plane to climb and descend erratically
•   Using ALT mode would still allow control of the vertical speed selection
•   We found animation issues with the wheels, now fixed
•   We found that when spawning the aircraft, the front wheel would sometimes spawn in the air – now corrected
•   FLT number now uses up to 7 characters as expected
•   Overspeed warning no longer announces when under the cruise speed
•   Speed protections are now working
•   Auto throttle was not reaching the target speed during a climb
•   Worked on aircraft overshooting turns when following the flight plan
•   The check list is no longer missing the steps that enable the engine generators
•   Adjusting the trim was having no effect in flight

DA40
•   The glass cockpit waypoints now show correctly in the map and on the toolbar
•   We corrected the Low Volt displayed after completing the checklist

BONANZA G36
•   Audio: The engine audio on startup is now correctly synced to the engine startup
•   Following the checklist, it was impossible to read the RPM because the MFD was OFF
•   The Alternators 1 and 2 are no longer ON when starting from Cold and Dark

TBM 930
•   You are now able to tune the NAV Radios using the touch screen
•   The NAV screen sometimes showed flight plan errors and artifacts, improvements have been made here
•   The tuned VOR was not giving a bearing
•   Checklist issues:
•   Prop RPM and TRQ was not achieving goals
•   The engine was not turning off because the throttle was not reaching the Cut Off position

Airport Specific Changes

AIRPORTS
•   ZBAA – There is a large green texture on the ground in the ZBAA Beijing airport
•   KMCO – Landing Ribbons do not remain solid at KMCO Orlando International
•   LXGB – Road traffic crossing over LXGB airport
•   VQPR – Service vehicles fall from the sky when departing from Parking 20 at the VQPR Paro airport
•   KLAX – Wrong departure runway at KLAX

Bug Fixes and QoL Improvements

ALL PLANES
•   Auto Pilot was causing many aircraft to “rock” from left to right when ON
•   The “Landing Gear” alert was spamming when at 16,000 MLS

AIRLINERS
•   Mach Speed Management – we found issues that were affecting overall airliner performance that are now fixed. Mach numbers should now be more consistent
•   Vertical Speed logic improved – the aircraft was only following the vertical speed and would not adjust for speed. This was having a negative effect on the Auto Pilot functionality. This has now been fixed but let us know if there are any other autopilot issues of which we should be aware
•   Airliners should now be managing speed correctly – this was previously causing the aircrafts to overshoot their designated speeds

Live Air Traffic
•   Live Air Traffic was only representing one or no planes during Free Flight
•   Navigation Lights used to detach from the Live Planes
•   We were missing pilots in the live planes – now we are not…

Cameras
•   The 3rd person camera would shake when performing 45° degree turns
•   Multiple Instrument Camera Controls were lacking functionality
•   The user would get stuck while looking at instruments combined with the Right Click + Drag free look in Cockpit view

Flight Director
•   The Flight Director was not always in sync with the activation of the FD button at the start of a flight
•   Users were unable to turn off the Flight Director in some aircraft during flight

COCKPITS AND INSTRUMENTATION
•   Issues fixed with the altimeter “jumping” during flight
•   G1000: Auto-tuning the NAV Radio on a G1000 used to default to NAV1 instead of the selected radio
•   G1000: the approach drawn after setting the direct to or classic-flight plan was not correct
•   Glass Cockpits: Tooltips were corrected

MULTIPLAYER
•   Issues fixed that were preventing pilots from seeing other pilot’s planes during flight
•   Existing friends would display as disconnected in the friends list after launching the game
•   Making changes to the Custom Weather settings was not applying those changes to all group members in a Multiplayer Session

Known issues

A320neo
•   The aircraft speed does not maintain when changing altitude in the managed mode
•   The NAV mode only activates when also activating the autopilot

B747-8i
•   AUTO BANK gives bank angles that are too low (e.g. 5° instead of 25-30°)
•   Once speed targets change to Mach, multiple interactions are then required to get your speed to follow the target

DA40 NG
•   Cannot currently clear “Direct To” flight plan in the DA40NG
•   The aircraft is currently rocking left and right during navigation

GRAND CARAVAN
•   Autopilot currently overshoots too much to reach the FPL leg

TBM 930
•   Airport info doesn’t appear when selected in the nearest airport list
•   You are currently unable to monitor COM2 in the TBM 930 without also using ATC window
•   The aircraft doesn’t follow the flight path during steep turns (smoothed trajectory)

MULTIPLAYER
•   We are currently missing a notification when adding users to a group that is larger than capacity

PERIPHERALS
•   Many keyboard controls are still missing – we will continue to add these and improve upon them

WEATHER
•   Snow does not last on the ground surfaces as expected

The latest patch is available for download at 1700Z (10am PDT) today. To install the patch, simply close Microsoft Flight Simulator and relaunch. However, if you have experienced installation issues, we strongly advise you to do a clean install of Microsoft Flight Simulator by following the steps below:

Once uninstalled, check to make sure all files are deleted. If you have game files in a different directory than where the app is installed by default (C: drive) uninstalling the game will not delete those files.

Search for anything under ‘Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe’ or ‘MicrosoftFlightSimulator’ and ensure all files are deleted.
Once the previous steps are done, you can reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator. Make sure to follow the Download & Installation guides https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015760620-Download-Installation-guides
If the issue persists, please contact support via Zendesk and send us your DxDiag and Msinfo.

To create Dxdiag, simply follow these steps:

1.   In Windows, select Start and enter “dxdiag” into the search box on the taskbar. Select dxdiag from the results.
2.   In the tool, click on ‘Save All Information’ and wait a few seconds
3.   Save the file as a ‘Text File (*.txt)’ on your desktop
4.   Attach the file to your response.
To provide a Microsoft System Information MSINFO32, do the following steps below:
1.   Press Windows + R keys to open the Run command window
2.   Type msinfo32 in the dialogue box and click OK or press Enter.
3.   This will open the System Information, click File and select Export
4.   Name your file as “msinfo32.txt” and make sure it is saved as a text file (.txt).
5.   Save the file to your Desktop.

Once these files we’ll be received by our team, we’ll investigate further.
