TFDi Design: Announcing PACX

Introduction

To us, one of the most notable things missing in commercial aviation simulation was the feeling of teamwork and the feeling of having an aircraft full of people counting on you to get them to where they need to be. There is a responsibility to make it to your destination on time smoothly and without issue, or if that’s not possible, properly communicate it to your passengers and crew. Every flight brings a whole new group of people and potentially new situations to handle. Our goal was to bring this experience to flight simulation; and so we present Passenger and Crew Experience – PACX.

Dynamic Announcements

The first area that needed addressing was flight attendant announcements. With PACX, the announcements you hear are tailored specifically to your flight. For example, if you’re flying a morning flight number 4553 to Los Angeles, you will hear “Good morning ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard flight 4553 with service to Los Angeles”. If you’re flying an evening flight number 2236 to Atlanta, you will hear “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard flight 2236 with service to Atlanta”.

https://youtu.be/IBaqcTVNzjM

In additional to flight specific data, announcements will vary between flights. You could complete several consecutive flights and hear different announcements, in a slightly different order, on each flight. This provides the feeling of having an actual crew on the aircraft.

Passenger AI Simulation

PACX simulates every passenger on the aircraft individually. They all have their own personality. Some may be flying for business and be very particular about their schedules. Others flying for leisure may be more lax. Some may be aviation enthusiasts and won’t be as bothered by turbulence, whereas others who are more nervous fliers will be more on edge about it. These nuances, and many more, will factor in to overall flight satisfaction and the odds and nature of in-flight events.

It is important to note that the extent of the passenger and crew AI is purely through text/menus. You will not physically see passengers in your cabin.

Interaction

For the first time, you will be able to interact directly with the crew and passengers.

If you’re behind schedule, you can notify the passengers ahead of time and they will be more forgiving. If you fail to notify them, it will more severely affect their flight satisfaction. In the event of an aircraft problem, being communicative with your passengers and crew can aid in calming them during the emergency procedures.

In some cases, a passenger related disturbance may occur. You will be able to instruct the crew how to deal with the problem, when applicable, and the subsequent events will happen accordingly.

Vocal Control

In addition to the traditional interaction menu, you will be able to interact with your passengers and crew verbally. For example, if you cue up the microphone and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize, but we’re going to be a bit behind schedule today. We’ve having a few minor technical issues but should have them worked out shortly”, the interaction system will intelligently figure out what you said and notify the passengers and crew accordingly. You’ll then see that they are all a little frustrated, the nervous fliers may be a bit more anxious, and the expected time of arrival will be extended.

Design Decisions

We wanted to ensure that the information presented to the pilot was done so in an immersive and reasonable way. You will not see a percentage indicating the passengers’ overall satisfaction. It will be much more generalized and realistic. If you want to dig deeper into each passenger’s information, a menu will be provided to allow you to do so, to simulate speaking to the passenger directly.

The interface itself is designed to be minimal and not intrusive. PACX is built to fit in to your existing work flow and doesn’t directly replace other software. As it aims solely to provide a thorough and immersive in-flight experience, other airline management, tycoon-style, or economy software should be compatible.

Expansion and Integration

We intend to offer the ability for PACX flight reports to be included as part of a pilot report for virtual airlines to assist in virtual flight quality assurance. We also intend to integrate directly with select third party aircraft to allow immersive interaction, like in-cockpit controls for queuing up your microphone or bringing up the interaction menu.

That said, we would like to expand PACX heavily depending on community feedback. We want to hear ideas for what would bring an extra level of immersion to your in-flight experience.

Questions and Answers

Q. Is PACX only compatible with the TFDi Design 717?

A. No, PACX will be compatible with any aircraft. The direct in-cockpit integration will only be with select aircraft, but PACX itself will work fully with any.

Q. Will I be able to have a safety video instead of a spoken safety announcement?

A. Yes, an option will be provided to play a custom safety video in place of the spoken safety announcement.

Q. Will PACX only support commercial flight?

A. Although it was designed around commercial flight, we intend to add support for general aviation, corporate aviation, and military flight as well, but they may not necessarily be in the initial release.

Q. What will the price be?

A. As PACX is a utility, it will be priced competitively to comparable utilities on the market currently.

Q. Will PACX support X-Plane?

A. Yes, along with support for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Prepar3D, our intent is to make PACX fully compatible with X-Plane.

Q. When will PACX be available?

A. As we continue to progress, we will provide a more specific timeline.

I’m just wondering what my girlfriend would say if I stared talking to my virtual passengers. ;) But more seriously, great add on.  I’m planning to buy a new PC this year so a might get back to FS at some point.

On behalf of the whole team here at TFDi Design, we are proud to announce the release of Passenger and Crew Experience, dubbed PACX.

After several years of hard work and several members of the team pulling together, we can finally share with you the result of our dedication and allow you to finally use our product. Throughout this time, we have worked tireless hours, made great friends and recorded over 1000 individual sound files and it has been yet another amazing journey made by our team.

With that being said, our product is not completely finished. This is because we appreciate community feedback and intend to roll our product out as “Early Access” so we can continue to build and develop PACX over time and to continue to build on what our beta team has told us. This means that we want to hear from you. We want to hear your thoughts on our product to allow us to build new features, release fixes and deliver on what you want.

On initial release, you will be able to communicate with the cabin, whether that be by completing a pre-flight announcement, dealing with drunk passengers or resolving an in-flight passenger emergency. PACX takes your simulation journey to the next level, by providing you with an in-depth insight into flying an aircraft full of holidaymakers or business travelers in the rows behind you.

At this moment in time, we would like to thank all our developers, testers, pilots and experts along the way and look forward to speaking with you in the coming weeks to help shape PACX into the program that will provide a higher level of flight simulation.

PACX 0.9.9.0: What's New?

Josh Riley: TFDI

I know you have all been eagerly awaiting the release of the latest PACX version and we've been working tirelessly to get this rolled out to you over the past few days ahead of Flight Sim Show Cosford at the weekend. Collin's changelog below covers each aspect of the changes briefly, but I wanted to show you what major additions we have made to PACX in this release.

Career Mode

With the introduction of career mode, you have the opportunity to set the parameters to run the airline as you wish. You can choose your reputation (economy, balanced or business) which each come with dynamic events that occur. Each reputation type will attract a unique customer base, so you may see more or less of passenger incidents ;).

You can have the opportunity to restrict aircraft by rank too. This allows you to fly more aircraft as you progress through the ranks of the virtual airline, with only the best captains being let loose in the mighty 747!

We have also introduced "Hardcore Mode" within the career mode, which automatically records every flight you complete, as well as disabling slew and time acceleration to ensure you work harder to increase passenger satisfaction during longer flights! Be careful, though, as one crash will end your career...

The Awards System

Each award has its own unique badge and is tailored specifically to you! Once you have earned an award, simply clicking on it will take you to the unique web page for your award, which you can share with your friends!

Every award has a set criteria to meet in order to earn it, such as activity, dependability (on-time), passenger satisfaction and dealing with incidents. You can even work against other PACX users to be in the top 10 pilots within a month to win awards. Each award has bronze, silver, gold and platinum tiers, with platinum being our most prestige award which only a few pilots receive.

If you were an early supporter of PACX or a developer/contributor, you will get a special award that can only be given out manually. It's a great opportunity to show off if you have earned either award, as they are "limited edition"!

Native X-Plane PACXBridgeXP

This update also brings the in-sim menu and in-sim message support to X-Plane natively via PACXBridgeXP. More information on that is available here.

The Records System

In the new records page, you can choose to show all flights in all careers or narrow it down by career. Selecting the drop-down underneath “Career to Display”, you will be presented with a list of careers to choose from.

Depending whether you choose to show them all, or just per career, the information below will be tailored to what you select.

Updated Sounds

The sounds served a purpose, but they're getting smarter. You will now be able to hear the destination being spoken in announcements during the boarding and push back phase, as well as on arrival at your destination. Also in the arrival message, you will now hear the local time (based on your simulator time, so it will be accurate at any time of day in your simulator), as well the outside air temperature.

It's worth mentioning that in countries using Celsius to measure temperature, you will hear the sound in C, whereas in countries that use Fahrenheit, you will hear it appropriately!

Record Syncing

First off, PACX is still usable completely offline (outside of activation). When online, our record system will automatically (and efficiently) backup and synchronize careers, awards, and flight records with our server (and therefore, between computers) in the background. You won't spend much time waiting for downloads or loading, as everything is intelligently cached locally to speed things up. This system allows you to simply enjoy the product and not worry about backing up or downloading anything.

Folks,

As we are approaching the end of the year, I wanted to give an update on the status of the project and the plans going forward. Right now, there are 15 open items on the list for us. These vary in complexity and importance, but overall, they're focused on smoothing out the user experience and polishing the product as we approach version 1.0.

The list includes items like:

•   More flight comment types
•   More passenger interaction options
•   The cabin lights dimmed announcement
•   Fixed/improved integration for certain third party aircraft (NGXu, Quality Wings 787)
•   Serious improvements and refinements to sound volume, timing, and splicing

There are already several changes listed on the change log here that aren't on that list. Once version 1.0 is out, we will be able to look at corporate, military, and general aviation support. We've had some requests but interest has been mixed, so we will working with the community to determine the best plan.

Thank you all for your support and feedback and have a great New Year!

New feature
09/17/2020

From Collin Biedenkapp (Dev)

We have an exciting new feature coming to PACX this week! Expected this week (into beta) is a totally new cabin simulation! This means all passengers and crew are represented by actual "people" in the plane.

Key points:

-100% customizable - any aircraft, any class configuration, (and even any number of floors, as shown by the 747 layout above). You can add and edit the cabin layout any time.
-AI-path-finding causes passengers to react to, and wait for, each other to load bags, find seats, etc.
-Smooth and realistic - we've hand tuned (and will continued doing so) the numbers and behavior of the passengers and crew to be realistic and efficient.
-You can click a passenger to see them in the list, or select them in the list to highlight them in the cabin
-Their colors indicate their current satisfaction

All internal PACX features, such as boarding, deboarding, in-flight service, etc. have been/are being modified to be based off of the simulation of the passengers - the cabin is not just for show. Expect to see this update available via beta in the coming days!

[25SEP2020] PACX Development Update
From the devs

Passenger and Crew Experience
If you haven’t kept up to date with our beta testing, PACX has some awesome new features that are available for testers in our Discord server in the #pacx-testers channel. Let’s summarise the new features!

MSFS 2020 Compatibility
Testing has recently been completed in which the all-new PACX HUD and PACXBridge were made compatible with MSFS 2020. We are pleased to report that all tests were hugely successful and the opt-in community testing helped us polish it up.

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/JmzFSXb6ZA-NxPqjEEnVk6D-RLbS32TKi-x9CYcMgHj6do47LTL9DlP9Iwx2vP7XVAqSjl3lavVXNI53h50MU12d1PUH6_hKrCOJWyY6ZvP4f7agbR9mog_7xtSEXWxzZ60ZMiZl)

Cabin Layouts and Passenger Simulations
One of the more-requested features of PACX in recent months was the ability to view passengers as they walk through the cabin of the aircraft within the application. If they are boarding and trying to find their seat, or even going to the toilet, you will see the passenger “dot” moving around in real-time!

These cabin layouts are also not static and have been designed to make them customisable! This allows you, as a user, to create your own cabin layout at any time, for any aircraft in any configuration. The passenger simulation aims to be as smooth and realistic as possible so that the behaviour of your passengers and crew are as realistic and efficient as possible. You also have the opportunity to click any passenger to find them on the list, and their colour will change depending on their current satisfaction!

To make this even better, all features of PACX have been adjusted to be based on the passenger simulation. Internal features such as boarding, de-boarding, in-flight service etc. have all been made to work around the new simulation giving more significance to the cabin simulation.

We have also been asked various questions about how to customise flight comments, names and cabin layouts. We have also been asked about how the career mode works. To alleviate your worries, the following forum posts will make things much easier for you to understand!
