Title: music for the tornado build
Post by: Agathosdaimon on June 01, 2020, 09:28:36 AM
hi - i got the copy of tornado you had here a while back (i have my own installs but i assume yours is the "modded" one and saves me the trouble of figuring out the modding myself, which didnt work out so well last time i tried) but there is no intro or menu music in your version- is this right? i like the tornado into music, is there a way to have it playing in the sim?

Hi Agathosdaimon

I get my Tornado music by copying a modded FLIGHT.EXE and pasting into a full installation of Tornado 1.0E's C:\TORNADO\TORNADO\FLIGHT folder.
During the game, make sure you hit the 8 key to cycle through the various sound settings. To have the intro music playing in the sim, you have to go to the Options | Preferences part of the GUI and set your music/sound options.

Also, if you have the development environment, after you link the FLIGHT.EXE, when you run the program, you can do so with the /ma flag to play the theme song. As in:
D:\TORNADO\FLIGHT\FLIGHT /a /ma

okay thanks - i see i had to turn it on and then restart the game altogether

music plays now, but its a little bit crackly - was that simply how it is, or can that be improved by some setting?

I suppose if you played the game using a retro PC with real DOS 5.0/6.0 and with actual SoundBlaster or Roland hardware, the quality might be better. For me I am playing Tornado off a Windows 10 laptop running DOSBox 074-3 which is emulating the soundcard.
Crackly? Maybe switch to Adlib and give it a try. Soundblaster sound, however, should sound richer and fuller with more bass.
