I will try to be there. Not sure what the Sargent Majors (aka "she who must be obeyed") plans are for this evening.

I'm out, its raining here. That will turn my 1.5hr commute into a 2.5hr one. They cant drive in the rain here. Or the snow or even a sunny day for that matter. Yes seriously, if its sunny we have "sun delays" because people aren't smart enough to lower their visor BEFORE they get to the top of a hill.

Great session. 4 humans v the enemy ai. Stardog and I on the left. Le Boef (Beef) and Mr Digby on the east. We were the French (blue). The enemy were the allies (red). We used couriers and the HITS system.

Pont De Mousson was the objective. The enemy had to take it from us. We were the French. They the Austrians in Allies in the south.

Unknowingly we each split our forces.

We were met on the left by cavalry and artillery as we were coming out of the forest road.

We fought valiantly on the left. The enemy artillery were a constant pain. We lost many men. Every time we tried to attack them with infantry (it is all we had) we were met with a counter from their cavalry. We called for cavallry support from the east but it never came! They were fighting their own war. Enemy arty in red circle.

It was hard going. each time we went into square, their artillery pounded us. When we switched to line, the cavalry charged us. We held on. We started to push. However we were the defenders so we didn't push to hard. We though we had done it. We thought we had prevailed but a banner was spotted in the south. Then another and another. The enemy were only softening us up. We were not prepared for what followed!

A sea of enemy infantry. We fell back into the woods. A fighting withdrawal....Not a rout! We breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.

Orderly withdrawal. This is the view from the saddle. You can see the sea of enemy infantry on the right!

The results show a draw. The enemy never managed to take our objective. However we probably would not have been able to stop them at the end.

This was a good learning experience for me and I enjoyed the mission very much. I've been playing SOWWL since the beginning of November this year and up to now only commanded one brigade at a time.

I was C-in-C For this mission, commanding two divisions while at the same time commanding one of those divisions with Asid and Stardog commanding an Infantry Brigade each within my division. This left me to operate the third infantry brigade, a cavalry brigade, and two artillery brigades.

My split attention left me woefully lacking in both roles.

Our troubles were furhter exascerbated when I moved our units too far south. This dispersed and in some cases isolated the two divisions. There were gaps, mainly in the middle of the line. Worse, I uninentionally left the third brigade at the start location--though luckily got it to the front line in the nick of time.  The cavalry had been engaged in a desperate fight in the center up to that point.

Though the plan had the desired effect of delaying the enemy for two hours and keeping them far from the objective, we were taking too many casualties from effective enemy artillery and time was no longer on our side.

In retrospect (and now that I have a better understanding of the terrain) I would have kept our forces consolidated and just north of the Seille River, I would have also preferred Asid to command the other division instead of me. Finally, were he up for it, I would have put Stardog in command of the artillery to better control it.

Ipsa scientia potestas est!

Great post Beef.

You did well. It is not easy to command and play HITS, especially as it was your first command and you are still getting to grips with the game.

I am looking forward to lots more missions with you as the Commander  8)

Great mission today and besides Beef taking blame for some issues he did very well for his first time commanding the whole damn shooting match.
Was a very fun and immersive mission.
Asid and I had quite the fight on the Western Front of the fight, I have dubbed that skirmish The Battle of Square Valley.  I have never seen so much cavalry but not one of them got through our gauntlet of squares in the end even in the face of killer canon firing on our men.  Brave souls they were.

Awesome good time that.  I will have some screens to post once I sort them out.

Bravo all involved.

Great pictures. Bavarians always look gorgeous in those powder blue uniforms and the shots of their squares chequerboarded across the valley looks magnificent.

Beef did fantastically for his first time in command - far better than I did!

The learning curve is a brutal and bloody one but soon you'll be tossing corps about the map like a true Ney or Soult!

In MP with a player team that has enough players our group likes to have a C-in-C who commands no troops at all if possible, or he can actually take a brigade and use it as a corps reserve (he players the brigade commander but we give him the corps command rank). A brigade of heavy cavalry, grenadiers or guards forms a nice reserve.

With a division that has a player commander we also try to have no more than 1 of its brigades player commanded so that the command friction and weight of responsibility is balanced across the corps. It often happens that the player commanding the division tasks his human-led brigade as his advance guard on the march which then uses the couriers and delayed information system to its fullest and engages every player as equally as its possible.

And, as people discovered yesterday, with Napoleonic divisional artillery concentrated at the divisional level its always wise to keep the division concentrated. An infantry brigade, even two, away on their own will suffer badly vs a combined arms enemy.

Its rewarding to play a game using MP restricted commands and views that can emphasize these things to you. The helicopter view and instant communications would lose all of this tension.
