Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare is set in a chaos filled world occupied by battling factions, bandits and warlords who seek to rule the world.

The game is about your career as a faction leader: Start with minimal assets, you need to make money, build an army, wage wars against other factions and eliminate your rival forces with thoughtful strategies and fine marksmanship and eventually conquer the world. The game provides a completely different shooter experience which strikes a balance between intense first-person action and general strategy.

This Early Access FPS mixes Mount Blade with modern combat, plus a bit of RTS
Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare

I know Mount & Blade fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival (and even the announcement of the date of the arrival) of Bannerlord, and probably entertaining thoughts of Kingdom Come: Deliverance in the meantime. But for another quick fix, you may want to keep your eye on Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare, now in Early Access on Steam. While it's a modern combat game with guns and grenades instead of horses and swords, it's still extremely Mount & Bladey. It's, like, waaaaay Mount & Bladey.

Having played a lot of M&B myself, Freeman feels immediately familiar. When I begin playing, the simple world map shows towns and roads, and I wander around represented by a single soldier with a little number next to me displaying the size of my hired forces (currently 10, made up of two squads). Other factions, plus groups of bandits and looters, stroll around the map too, though not entirely in real time: when I stop moving, they stop as well. As in M&B, you can visit towns to trade, recruit, rest (in this case, by visiting a hospital to heal), or to attempt a hostile takeover.

I start by allocating my starting skill points into abilities like leadership, accuracy, weapon expertise, and first aid (this is the RPG part of the game). A quick scan of the map shows no bandit gangs that look small enough for me to tackle with my small band of fighters, so I avoid conflict while shuffling back and forth between towns, having found a merchant that will overpay for tea and another that will pay a lot for 'garbage.'

I don't know why this merchant wants garbage so badly that he'll pay extra for it (or even pay anything for it, since it's garbage), but I buy some garbage for cheap and sell it for a profit. Yes, my adventure is off to a stirring and heroic start.

Eventually I've made enough money selling trash to hire a third squad, so with 15 mercs now following me I go out looking for trouble. Getting into combat is similar to M&B, too: just walk up to another force and tell them you're going to kill them. It even has that same semi-weird element from Mount & Blade, where you apparently have a face-to-face conversation with an enemy, and once you've both agreed to kill each other on the overworld map you are suddenly miles apart on the combat map.

When it comes to the first-person combat, for me at least, Freeman immediately turns into a game of PUBG.

In Freeman's combat, you've got a bit of real-time strategy, too. You begin by deploying your squads on a 2D version of the map, and at any point during the first-person combat you can visit this map to direct your squads in real time. It's done very simply, by selecting a squad and setting up a waypoint by double clicking a spot on the map. You can easily drag waypoints around, add additional ones, and quickly remove them if your plans have changed. When you close the map you're running around in first-person mode again. You can issue orders to follow, proceed with caution, charge, and retreat as well.

When it comes to the first-person combat, for me at least, Freeman immediately turns into a game of PUBG. People with better weapons than I have are shooting at me from way across the map and I can barely see them. Luckily, my own squads have the same sharp AI vision and I can just sort of look where they're aiming until I spot the enemy. The game is also very good at helping you know where your shots are going with little dirt-puffs visible even from quite a long distance. My main issue currently is I don't have a scoped weapon, and they're very expensive in the shops. I will have to haul so much garbage before I can afford one.

I manage to win a couple of early battles against bandit gangs that are about my size. When the battle is over, I collect a random smattering of loot—food, linen, grenades, ammo, and other odds and ends that can be collected and sold—though unfortunately no guns. I hire yet another small group of mercs, bringing my squad count up to four, though I only have enough skill points to command three squads at a time. They can come with me, but can't actually do any fighting until I level myself up or one of my other squads gets wiped out.

We keep winning our battles, though I'm not really doing much to help besides directing traffic, and each fight costs me a few men (they can be replaced with money) and I need to heal (more money) and buy more ammo and food (money). As a result, I'm just kind of treading water when it comes to proving myself a capable warlord. There don't seem to be proper missions in the game yet: the goal is to capture and hold ten towns, but each time I run into a friendly faction and ask them for some task to do, they just sort of shrug. I will keep selling garbage and spending my trashbucks on more men, then.

Eventually, the thing that always happens to me in M&B happens to me in Freeman: I get overtaken by a massively tough patrol on the overland map, I don't have enough cash to bribe them to leave me alone, and in combat all my men get brutally slaughtered. I escape—even if you're shot down in combat, you never really die—but I have no money, no recruits, and little recourse but to start at the bottom rung of the warlord ladder again, meekly buying and selling garbage and tea.

Freeman, according to its Steam page, will spend most of the year in Early Access. I'm having a good time with it, though without missions it feels barebones and without smaller groups of bandits to feed on in the early game the odds are stacked against the player. The fact that it mimics Mount & Blade in so many respects is a big plus for me personally, though honestly after playing Freeman, the thing I want to do more than anything at the moment is go play Mount & Blade again instead.

Freeman is now updated with a day/night cycle and weather system. Immersion is significantly increased when you can see the sunrise, sunset and the night sky full of stars in the game. And combat feels much different when they are fought in the different time of day. There are many weather types you can expect for example foggy, cloudy, sunny, thunderstorm and etc. Don't forget to put on a night vision goggle when you enter a combat. And also make sure to deploy squads equipped with night vision equipment in order to perform better in night operations. Usually, only the higher tier squads have night vision goggles. We will also add time-related Events in the future updates, such as more bandits activities at night...Have fun!

This version is compatible with your previous save so you should be able to load with no problem. But if you run into any troubles when loading the game please let us know.

Hi everyone! We have fixed a couple of bugs in this patch and added more detail to the skirmish map(Some buildings, terrain details, roads...). We also added localization to the system. So far only English and Chinese are available but we will add more languages in the future. The next update we will probably add simple side mission system as well as regular bug fixes. For people who require resolution options which the game currently doesn't support, we will do more research on it and get the appropriate monitor for testing.

A few features we may include in the upcoming updates:
-Side Missions
-Companions
-Strategic commands(Off-map artillery support, etc)

We have tested the ability to load games from previous versions and encountered no issues, so it should be safe to continue your previous game. But just in case, please back up your saved files located in C:/Users/User Name/AppData/LocalLow/KK Game Studio/Freeman_Guerrilla Warfare. Back up all the .txt files located in that folder.

Patch Notes:
-Minor changes on the skirmish map(removed some structures)
-Resumed the red dot enemy marker.
-Fixed the shaky shadows. (Separated the main camera and the weapon camera to allow accurate rendering)
-Guns no longer poke through the walls or the ground.
-Added Binocular.
-Added Flashlight attachment.
-Added a progress bar when using the medkit.
-Optimized the world map and the strategy map FPS.

The Next Update:
The next update will be a big one and we need more than one week to finish it. The main thing we will work on is a more world map strategy system. Factions will be more dynamic on the world map, for example, attack other factions army and lay siege to their towns. AI factions will also operate based on the economic system and will not spawn without limit (If they lose their cities, they will lose money and would not be able to hire more troops, etc). We will also add the basic companion system. You can find them in towns. They act similar to your squads but they have their own customizable equipment slots. For example, some of them can call off-map artillery support. Also, we will unlock the commanding skills to allow more units be deployed to the battlefield.

We will soon open the Official Forum.

We are bringing in more developers at the beginning of March so we will have extra hands to work on various issues. At the moment, our resources are still very limited but we are working really hard to make things roll forward. And we are sure that with all the efforts and the community support, this game will soon get to a new level.

Hey everyone! we are in the middle of releasing a big update as stated in the previous announcement. And we have just done the basic character customization system. Now you will be able to see yourself! All the equipment you put on yourself and your companions will be shown in the inventory window. The character is divided into multiple parts: helmet, mask, knee protection, pants, shoes, gloves, shirt, vest...There are many possibilities for you to create your unique character.We are paying some extra attention to the details, for example, if you equip a med-kit, it will be shown on your character too. We will also add a gender option at the beginning of the game. We will share more work-in-progress as we move forward in development.

We are also buying a few new pieces of equipment to test the game with different resolutions. So if you had issues with the resolution, don't worry we are on our way to solve it.

Be prepared to put on your best gear and take selfies:)

What we were working on lately

Hi everyone. Just a quick update on what we were working on lately. In the past 2 weeks we were doing a lot of moving, recruiting and other studio operation related stuff such as buying new pieces of equipment. We just moved to another office and settled down. We will soon upgrade our workstations for faster production quality and speed. We hired one additional programmer after careful selection and we are still looking for more. Development wise we have done the basic character customization and gender selection. We have completely reworked the equipment system and added a model to each wearable equipment. We also added the simple companion system(fully customizable) and off-map artillery. What is left for the next update is the basic faction dynamics(Factions fight each other on the map). And note that all these new features are on a very basic level and will be improved as we move forward. Stay tight!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your patience, we finally finished the update. Some key highlights of this update are the character customizations and companions. You will now be able to equip pieces of clothing to your character and choose between male and female.(Facial features customization will be added later) You start with 2 special companions at the beginning. They have the same character customization choices as the player. The companions have their own levels and stats. We will add more companion characters and depth to this system in future updates. You will also be able to use Air Strikes. We will expand the special abilities in future updates. On the world map, the factions have been made more dynamic. Factions now have a limited amount of money, and fight each other to get more money. Their towns generate money just like you get money from towns. Factions engage in battles with each other and perform sieges on warring faction's towns. This will be expanded upon more. You cannot join their combats at this moment but we have plans to engage in these in the future. We also added 3 new guns. In the future, you will be able to loot more enemy equipment, including their armor and guns.

For the next update, we will focus on some bug fixes & balancing.

We have uploaded update v0.132

Added 1 generic mission(Escort VIP).
Added 1 skirmish map(grass/mountain mix).
Added pistol animations.
Added unarmed animations.
Added MK-SL gun.
Added sights for most guns.
Adjusted hand animations when holding weapons.
Adjusted sights and accuracy for guns.
Can select multiple squads in map view when holding Left Shift.
Re-made Berezno terrain.
Removed mouse smoothing
When entering skirmishes, your tactical camera starts centered over your position.
Renamed G1 to R3, and Mac-11 to MNC-11.
Decreased AI accuracy.
Decreased the chance of rainy weather.
Bug Fix: Game stuck after auto-resolve.
Bug Fix: RPG can't be equipped.
Bug Fix: Companions drifting slowly when idle.
Bug Fix: T-pose on Party window.
Bug Fix: Invisible clothes.
Bug Fix: The size of the army isn't shown on Party window.

For the next update, we will work on a deeper diplomatic system and the rank system for squads.

Hi everyone,
We have been working on many aspects of the game, aiming to improve the gameplay in general.

A few notable features:
1. Most aspect ratio support(Including ultrawide)
2. A universal character system "The DETAILS" which is suitable for both the player character and the companions.
3. Squad system overhaul(The old soldier characters are replaced by the new character system, opening much more possibilities for future development)
4. Remade the world map with a better terrain engine.
5. Overall gameplay balancing.
6. A lot of new items, including some WW2 weapons.

Change Notes:
-Various resolution support, including ultrawide support.
-Squad overhaul and new squads.
-Can loot everything(weapons, clothes, ammo...)
-New character stats system"The DETAILS".
-Squad stars

-World map remade with better terrain engine.

Sorry for the delayed update. Lately, we were working on increasing team productivity, adding depth to the core system, fixing a large number of bugs and improving gameplay in general.


A few big changes you will see in the next update:
-Squad customization(you can put any unit in any squad)
-Deployable heavy military equipment such as mortar.
-Improved DETAILS system.
-Reworked many weapons and scopes.
-Better companion system(better integrated with the customizable squad system)
-Bug fixes and general gameplay balance.

Hi everyone,
We finally finished this big update. We have completely reworked the squad system. You can fully customize your squads and the single unit of your squad, including their weapons and clothes. And we have extended the infantry squad to a maximum of 9 people. You will be able to build your 100% own army after this update. We also reworked the world map, improved combat AI, character attributes and tried to polish gameplay in general. We didn't include the artillery in this update because we still need more time to test this function.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to load your previous game due to a large number of fundamental improvements to the game's core system.

Tips:
-On the Party window, Right-click the unit icon to show unit info.
-Left-click to remove a unit from the squad.
-You can give any equipment to soldiers to replace their own but if they die the issued equipment will be lost.


Change Notes:
-Full squad customization: units, squad name, icon.
-Create new custom squad.
-Full unit customization(Change weapons, armor, and clothes).
-Unit Rank System.(The level of a unit).
-Canceled the squad refilling system.(replaced by full squad customization)
-Companions equipment can only be changed in Party panel.

-Tweaked the appearance of most troops.
-Canceled the enemy direction indicator.(more tactics)

We have been working on improving the world system and begin to add more RPG elements and immersion to the game.

5. World map vehicles to increase traveling speed.
6. Added music for the world map.

Hello everyone,

As we mentioned in the previous announcement, the ETA release date for v0.180 was planned in one week. Unfortunately, we still need a little bit more time to test the new features, but we decided to find a solution to make the situation better.

We will upload the version which we have now to the Beta Test branch so you can download and give it a try if you wish. (Steam will not force you to download the game as we didn't replace the default downloadable version. You need to manually opt into the beta version to play it) The new version of the game is not compatible with your old saves so if you opt into the Beta Test you will need to start over. We really don't want you to lose all your progress every time we update, so we decided to plan carefully this time and try to put any features which can break the saves into one or two updates. So you will be free from losing progress in the future.

We do encourage you to wait for a few more days to one week. So you can enjoy a much more polished version of 0.180.

Thank you for your understanding and enjoy!

To Opt Into the Test branch.
Launch the Steam Client. Go to the LIBRARY tab. Right click on Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare and select Properties. Then click the BETAS tab. Then select "test-Test Version" from the drop-down and close the window. Then update the game and you are ready to go. You can opt out at any time to get the default version of the game.

We finally finished V0.180. This version has significantly improved game balance and many major changes over the game.

Major Changes:
-Scope bug fixed.
-Improved game balance and progression curve.
-Improved grand strategy elements(enemy factions also operate based on financial situation)
-Armies on the world map will be saved.
-Reduced casualty rate and enhanced soldier leveling system.
-Soldiers are more different from each other(Example, FCA Heavy Infantry has incredible armor but lack accuracy, Pozna Sharpshooter has good accuracy but lack armor, Atov night ops can see better at night, grenadiers can throw grenades)
-Can give unit special items (For example medkit to increase health or beer to increase morale)
-Enemy faction generals(Companions that can be captured)
-Added some new units(Combat medic, female fighters, mercenaries...)
-AI armies can capture prisoners.
-Auto-deployment and auto-combat system(AI commanding player squads)
-World map vehicles to increase traveling speed.
-Added music for the world map.
-Added gambling(Blackjack)
-Generic side missions(Eliminate bandits, deliver items, train soldiers, capture prisoners...)
-Add a new faction(Chernivkan Front Rebels)
-Can store items in owned towns.
-Can totally eliminate a faction.
-More facial textures and player character will have a random look when start a new game.
-Battle maps have increased visibility range, less trees.
-Better trading.
-Improved UI.
-Many minor improvements and bug fixes.

This version is not compatible with your previous saves. But this will not occur too often in the future updates as the core system is becoming more and more stable.

For the next few updates, we will keep polishing the game and fix bugrs.

Note that we are moving to another country now and may not be able to work and get online for around a week. But as soon as we are settled down we will start posting updates regularly.

Hi everyone,

We are almost done with V0.200 which gives a complete graphics and combat experience overhaul. We re-made all the maps, including all towns. We improved the time of day system(Realistic sky, lighting, fog, etc).We improved combat AI. Siege and defense combat is much more intense now because soldiers will take advantage of urban terrain(hiding in buildings, behind cover, making close combat possible). We also improved UI and weapon handling(Smoother feeling when aiming with sights).


While we are still working on it, we have just released the beta version of V0.200 and you can try it out now.

To Opt Into the Test branch.
Launch the Steam Client. Go to the LIBRARY tab. Right click on Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare and select Properties. Then click the BETAS tab. Then select "test-Test Version" from the drop-down and close the window. Then update the game and you are ready to go. You can opt out at any time to get the default version of the game.

Hi everyone,

We have uploaded version 0.200. This update gives a complete graphics, maps and combat experience overhaul. We remade all game maps, including all the town maps(And more locations coming in future update!). We also refined combat AI, especially the siege/defence AI. Troops defending the town will take advantage of urban terrain and covers. We also added upload your own flag option.

To upload your own flags:
First create a new folder named "flags" and put the folder in C:/Users/User Name/AppData/LocalLow/KK Game Studio/Freeman_ Guerrilla Warfare/.
(If you cannot find this folder, it may be Hidden by default). Then put your flag images(.png format, size 256*190) in the flags folder and restart the game.

Major Changes:
-Much more detailed skirmish maps and town maps.
-More realistic lighting and beautiful skies.
-Improved gun handling.
-More aggressive world map AI(Enemy forces attack you more often).
-Improved UI.
-Garrison troops will automatically take defensive positions during a siege.
-Improved combat AI.

We finally finished version 0.210. As FPS drops became more and more serious after update 0.200, we have decided to focus more on both graphical optimization and code structural optimization. This update cleared the road for future development.

-Saving/Loading time optimization.

Hi everyone,

We are finally adding combat vehicles and anti-vehicle troops to the game. In the next version, you will be able to buy combat vehicles from the vehicle dealer and deploy them into combat just like your infantry squads. Your enemies will also have vehicles so make sure to take some anti-vehicle weapons such as a RPG launcher to the battle. We are planning for many different types of vehicles such as armored anti-personnel vehicle, truck or technical with a mortar mounted and anti-vehicle guns.

Freeman now has combined arms combat! We have added several combat vehicles and AT units to the game, including armored mortar car, light tank and APC. Vehicles are very different from each other, some of them are good against infantry, some are good at long range support and some are more effective against other vehicles. This feature added much more depth to the gameplay and a brand new combat experience.

In the last announcement we mentioned that we are working an overhaul of the game that will bring more improvements to the final product. Today we want to share with you a few things that we having been working on so far.


Gunplay
We are completely reworking on the current weapon and aiming system to bring a much more satisfying feeling of gunplay. We have replaced most of the gun models with their HD counterparts and made each gun feel unique (Recoil, Sound, Bullet speed and muzzle flashes). We have also improved the sound effects (Spatial sounds and gunshots sound differences depends on distance). We have polished scopes and added more scopes with different magnifications.

AI
AI has been significantly improved in many aspects. Now their hiding ability has been improved and they proceed with much more caution. They can now also use improved tactics such as flanking. Squads have also been reworked. For example, a sniper squad will now consist of only two people and their long-range capabilities have been improved.

Terrain
Our terrains are now much more detailed, bigger and different. The new terrains will bring more possibilities for practicing different tactics and makes the gameplay fresh and alive.

Graphics
We have overhauled the graphics. We added a new lighting system that brings more realism and details. We also added a few settings that increase the graphics dramatically such as ambient occlusion, volumetric lighting and HDR skyboxes.

Some details of the upcoming update

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since our last announcement and we are finally ready to share with you some details of our upcoming update.

We were taking a lot of time thinking and finalizing the game features as we are planning for the next update to be feature complete, fix bugs, polish game balance and add more content.


Today we want to share with you our extended world map.

We have added many new types of locations which you can visit on the world map. They are not conquerable but will bring many interactions.

•   Village: Hire cheap militia squads, take village specific missions, steal, and more.
•   Black Market: Purchase high-end items.
•   Mercenary Camp: Recruit high-level mercs.
•   Bandit Outpost: Destroy it and get awesome loot.
•   Mine: Loot if you defeat the guards.


We also remade the world map to adapt these new features and made combat map based on world terrain possible.

Today we want to share with you some information about the improved city management system which we are working on recently.

As we mentioned in the previous announcement, we have added many types of locations on the world map such as villages which are fun to explore, but cities are still the most important and frequently visited location in the game.

In a city, you can:

Once you have your own city, you can do much more...

1. Build many types of city buildings to increase the economy, population, security, and happiness of the civilian.

2. Build defensive structures such as MG nest. (They will be automatically placed on strategic locations during the siege)

3. Put garrison troops.

The city's tax generation depends on the population and economy level. Certain types of buildings such as a factory can increase the economy level. But you also need to pay attention to basic civil infrastructures such as a park and a hospital to keep your people satisfied because If your city has very low happiness level, civilians may riot, burn buildings and even form a rebel army to take over your city.

Some buildings have special functions, for example, a fire station can reduce damage in case of a fire event; a police station can reduce damage during a riot; a marksman's training school will unlock Freedom Sniper Squad for you to hire in the barrack.

Cities will give you great economical boosts to maintain a bigger army and conquer the world. But only if you can manage it and defend it. 😉

Hi everyone,

Today we want to introduce our new event system. To make the world map more dynamic and engaging, we have added more than 40 different events.


There are three categories of event.

1. City Events.

2. Diplomacy Events.

3. World Map Events.


City Events

Once you have your city, many events could happen based on the status of your city. For example, if the happiness level of the citizen is very low, it is highly possible for criminal events such as robbery and riot to happen and could cause significant damage to the economy. Certain buildings can prevent harmful events from happening, for example building a fire station can reduce the chance of the City On Fire event and police station can reduce the rate of criminal incidents. Positive events such as Civilian Joining The Army or Civilian Help You Build The City(So the construction time will be significantly reduced) can happen if the citizens are happy.

Diplomacy Events

The event system mainly drives the diplomacy system of the game. If your relationship with a faction is below the threshold, the faction may declare war on you. On the other hand, if the relationship with this faction is excellent, they may provide you with many support such as artillery support, attack helicopter support. They may also ask you for something in return, for example asking for funding of their next military campaign.

World Map Events

Randomly generated world map events such as generated bandit camps, black markets, mercenary camps, destroyed convoys, and many others, will make the exploration much more fun. Moreover, some of these events can bring great benefit. For example, a successful attack on the bandit camp can not only bring you unique loot but also dramatically increases your reputation.

Mission system and the update ETA

Hello everyone,


Today we want to introduce our improved quest system and also discuss with you about what kind of quests you would like to see in this game.

In the previous quest system, you can only take missions from the mission board in cities. But now you can take missions from multiple sources: in the bar from the bounty agent(city), from companions and from villages. There are generic missions and pre-set missions.


Generic missions are similar to what we had before, but with new varieties, for example, "destroy bandit bases" or "find and capture lost animals and return them to the village."

Pre-set missions are designed and will only trigger once. For example, an army of Uman terrorists invaded this land, and you need to destroy them on people's behalf. Completing this kind of missions will usually give you more unique rewards, such as reputation or achievements.

Expansion of the dev team and new progress

We are glad to announce that we have expended our dev team.

Based on the experience we have gained from this year of intensive development, we have learned what is essential for this game and what our studio needs the most to bring this game to its maximum potential. Therefore we feel that it is the time to bring in more people to go much further in development and unlock features which couldn't be done by just 3 people. So far, we have in total 4 programmers and 1 artist working on various modules of the game. And we have been working great with each other.


Recently, we are working on many things at the same time.


-Features such as joining combat of other fighting armies. You can select which side you want to help, and it will affect the relationship with certain factions.

We have finally released version 0.80. So lets sum up the differences between the last build the current one.

1. Improved combat AI: AI units looking for covers and high-grounds, more sneaky and can flank you from all sides. We are still working to make combat more tactical.

2. Improved graphics. More detailed textures, lighting, better detailed environments, etc.

3. Remade all maps to fit the new combat system and graphic style.

4. Remade all squads and soldiers. And redefined their loadouts and stats.

Why less features than before?

Hello everyone!

Recently we got many questions and complains that version 0.222 had much more features than version 0.8. So I decided to explain more details about what happened.

As you remember, it took us quite a long time to prepare v0.8. It was because we were rewriting most of the systems and almost remade the game from the beginning. We did that for being able to add modding, improve optimization (we didn't work on that yet) and to extend possibilities for future development. The game system is much more integrated now with much cleaner coding so our new programmers can get their hands on the project easier.

Features which will come back for sure: companions, night vision goggles,
camouflage, binoculars, weather, ability to give med-kit to units, melee weapons, different difficulty mods.

Features under consideration: vehicles, gambling, hospital, ability to give boosting items to units.

Features which were canceled: units inventory customization ( so we can improve AI, make different units feel different and for modding, still WIP).

Localization system was one of those which were remade from the most beginning, and we had not enough time yet to polish it or finish translation to other languages, as we were focused on fixing game breaking bugs. We will start to work on it today and will try to finish it ASAP. At the moment only English and Chinese versions are playable.

We are doing our best to make the game better, but it is quite difficult to handle such a massive project as for such a small team, and with so little time. We are hoping for your understanding and patience so that we could make this game better and better.

Soldier customization, AI, Optimization and much more in v0.90

Hello everyone,

We have just released v0.90. There are a lot of things that we have been working on for this update. A few major things are:

1. Soldier customization

Yes, we have added it back. The reason why we canceled it in the previous updates were because of modding and balancing. But we have found solutions for that, so we gladly added it back. The change is that if you want to hire a soldier with equipment, you will also need to buy their equipment, which is expensive, or you can hire them without equipment. This has a significant impact on the economy of course, but we have also tweaked the economy system to balance everything out. Now you would feel much more like a real guerrilla leader, starting from nothing and struggling to equip each of your guys. When a soldier levels up, they won't level into a new "Class", instead, they will gain attribute points. For example, a Pozna sniper will earn about 1 point in marksmanship and 10 points in rifle efficiency every time he levels up. Looting will be the primary source of getting equipment for your army.

2. World Map AI and Economy

It is still a work in progress. Each faction will have a starting budget, and they will use it to hire troops. AI factions will make money from city taxes and through combat. If a faction lost a city, its economy would be influenced, and it will likely result in a drop of army size. Factions with more cities will have a stronger and stronger economy and may dominate the world. And for the player, it is also true because in the late period of the game the player will need a large amount of finance to sustain a considerable army, which can only be achieved efficiently by owning cities. As for improvements in world map AI. NPC armies will no longer roam randomly. They will guard their cities, patrol near their villages, scout another faction's cities, join combat and etc.

3. Dialog and Diplomacy System.

We have added dialog when you encounter an army on the world map. Diplomacy is also done during the dialog phrase. For example, when you encounter a neutral faction, you may bribe them to increase relationship or ask them to pay the passage fee. Or when you were caught by bandits, you may try to persuade them to let you go.

4. Optimized Saving System.

In the previous versions, saving may take a few minutes, but now it will only take around 0.2 seconds. We are still working to make loading the game faster though.



5. General Optimization.

Optimization in Freeman is a complicated job which requires us to go through each system to pinpoint the issues. So far we have optimized resource loading, squad customization screen, inventory screen, entering combat speed and various world-map related lags. There are still much to be done in this area.



6. Much more accurate auto-combat system.

We have designed a much better auto-combat algorithm that can simulate real in-game combat without actually entering the battle. The result is somewhat 90% close to actual combat. Now you no longer need to worry about unfair auto-resolve.



7. We also put significant effort into modding. In fact, we are already using our own tools to tweak the game rather than doing everything in the game engine. All these tools will be available after the official release.

We have uploaded V0.91 to the test branch. The previous version had a serious loading issue, and we finally found out the real cause for that, and we have fixed it. Now the game should load no problem, and it should be faster when you start a new game or load a game. We have tested it on many computers including a few with lower specs.

Please let us know if it works for you.


-Fixed the loading crash bug.

-Slightly reduced memory usage.

-Improved loading game speed.

-Added the ESC button to quit all UI menus.

-Improved world map AI: chasing and running away logics.

-Added overweight system: On the world map, if the player carries too much stuff, it will go overweight.

Hi everyone,

The rest of the development work is divided into three significant steps. First of all, we will spend some time to improve the existing features, which include Soldier Customization System, Town System, Event System, Dialogue System, Combat AI, and World Map Faction AI.

At the same time, we will continue to add features that have not yet been added, including the companion system, companion AI as generals, the game ending, character creation, difficulty options, achievement system, and game tutorials. At the same time, balance game, polish and optimize.

Finally, we will organize our modding tools, such as map editor, gun editor, and tools for editing game data, etc. We will also write detailed tutorials on how to properly make and install mods.


The detailed list is as follows.

- Improving the Soldier Customization System (using medical items and equipping special props such as grenades and first aid kits)

- Optimize and balance the city system, add vassal auto-management function and balance public events.

- Optimize the Combat Command System: Add more combat commands and formation.

- Add tactical items such as binoculars.

Hi everyone,

We have released version 0.94. We have added many things and made many adjustments in this build. The major changes are as follows.

-Group Combat: Your companion generals and allies will join your combat when near and enemy armies nearby will also join combat as reinforcement.
-Added trading convoy: You will see trading convoys on the world map and you can rob them.
-Added auto-equip function (Automatically pick up the most suitable weapons and armors for your squad members)
-Added auto-refill squad function (Automatically refill your squad with unassigned units)
-Added all-attack and all-go-to commands for companions for the player to quickly order companion generals to attack a city or gather near a city.
-Added the faction's military strength and finance chart for the player to easily compare each faction's performance.
-Added quick-sell-junk function.
-Optimized the Party UI's refreshing speed and the combat map spawning speed. (Fixed the frequent memory leak during spawning of soldiers).
-Added the mayor system(AI factions and you can assign generals as mayor of a city. Mayors will auto-manage the city, build and fix buildings and recruit garrison).
-Optimized enemy AI (Now they can flank you, charge at you and so on).
-Balanced the game (Added more low-level enemies and balanced the economy and difficulty).
-Balanced the looting system(During a joint operation, you can only get your share if you contribute)
-Save all status of AI armies (For example, when the enemies are sieging your city or in combat, all these status will be saved if you load the game).
-Added different difficulty levels.



We have also fixed many bugs, a few major ones are as follows.

-Disappearing inventory items after load.

-Items won't disappear after delivering a collecting mission.

-You will get a city after helping a faction attacking the city.

-Game frequently crashes during deployment phrase or managing squads.

-Disappearing mercenary camp after some time during the game.

-Key-mapping gets reset to none if you have corrupted save file bug.


For the next build, we will keep working on a few new features and keep polishing the current ones. We will keep improving game balance, player experience, sound effects, and UI.

About the floating bug situation

Dear community,

In the recent build some people have encountered the floating in the sky bug after loading the game. Many people start to help us figure out why the bug could happen but some people just start to blame us how we dare to release such a broken version without testing it. So I want to clear the situation.

1. We always test the game for at least a few days in both builds, developers build in unity and steam build.
2. If we get any game breaking bug we will definitely not release it in the main build.
3. As soon as we got this bug reported, we were working nonstop and even didn't sleep just to fix it as quickly as possible.
4. We couldn't test this bug by ourselves that's why it took much longer time than usual to fix this bug, but anyway we were trying and releasing many builds to test it with the community.
5. We are very sorry for people who got this bug and couldn't play for these two days and we totally understand how frustrating it can be.

Why this bug happened not for everyone:

It is because for some reasons some computers will have a wrong float saved to the save file and then after loading the game the player will spawn in the sky or somewhere else. We have fixed this bug from the saving point of view but if your old saves are already corrupted, the game will automatically reset your location.

I just really wish our community can understand this kind of situations for the future and be more friendly, as we are really trying our best. And also want to thank people who supported us and help to test, it increases our productivity a lot.

The hot-fix for this bug is out.

Hello everyone,

We had released one update (v0.943Beta) in the Test build, where most of the bugs which were because of saves (like changing location whenever load game, 1 health, failed quests, prisoners attempts don't update, etc.) are fixed. But it's recommended to start a new game if your old saves are broken.

We don't put this version to the main build because it still has some small bugs, so we will keep it in the Test build until we make sure it has no big bugs.

Today or tomorrow we will release another update in the Test build, where will add some new small features, more details about this update we will announce later.

So if you want to help us with testing or just try new features, just switch to the test build.😉

The optimization of the camouflage system: clothing will provide the different value of camouflage for the terrain. Prone and crouch will increase camouflage. In grass and near trees, camouflage will be increased. While moving and shooting camouflage may be decreased.

Optimize the soldier AI intelligence, increase the soldier revenge mechanism. After the attack, AI will do counterattack. Increase the idle soldier priority set the target to the enemy around the player. Optimize price for fixing damaged buildings.

Hello everyone,

We are really excited to announce that our game Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare is now feature complete and going to release on October 4th, 9 pm EST!

It's been one year and 8 months since we participated in Early Access. During this time the game went through many changes. Most people won’t recognize the game anymore, and if you are curious about how the first version of the game looks like, you can download it from the Test Version Build when we fully release the game.

It started like a small scale game, which mixed FPS and elements of Grand Strategy, Real Time Strategy, and RPG, with not too many features and simple graphics. Very soon after release, this game started to grow and become more and more unique with complex systems, lore, and in-depth gameplay mechanics added to the game.

Now the game becomes more like an actual guerrilla warfare simulator, where you need to train civilians to become experienced fighters, equip them with whatever you can get, and fight together for the liberation of Cherniv.

We are very thankful to all the people who supported us during the development! It was an incredible experience to create this game together with the community. The development is never an easy task, we will never forget all of these sleepless nights and the tough decisions we had to make. We will never forget how we grew from three devs into a full production team. And most importantly, how we were shaping this game little by little with the community who also had a great passion for it. So once more, with all our hearts, we want to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who have supported us!

As we said, the game is features complete, but we will still keep fixing bugs, adding some minor features, content, and keep maintaining the game in total. We will also spend time in polishing the modding system and support players to build their own FGW mods!

1. Bug Fix: Fix the bug that squads often wait several seconds to execute an order.

New Campaign:
-In addition to the original Classic Battle, three new campaigns are available upon new games: Rise of Atov, Conquest to Unite a Land, and Three War Parties.
-In addition to the original Classic Battle, two new special campaigns are available upon new games: A Continent of Chaos and Challenge Mode.
Note: choosing a new campaign provides fresh game experience with different gaming stages and environments, as well as a new strategy.

Quick Game:
-A Quick Game option is added at the campaign mode. This option allows players to customize and start a battle directly.
-In a Quick Game, players are allowed to customize a battle. Battle type including: City Offense & Defense, Village Breakthrough, Annihilation, Field Encounter, Stronghold Annihilation, are available. Environment options including: mountain, snow, forest, desert, are available. Other options including factions, troops, class and time of the day are available.
Note: Famous Battles are available at the Quick Game mode. By choosing well-known battles in the game, players are allowed to further explore their companions’ backstories, through fighting on their side. These battles come with default factions, troops, location and time of the day. Players can jump directly to the fight and steer the battlefield, after choosing the class.

Gambling:
- Gambling is added to each city, in the Bar. Each lottery draw cost a few coins. Rewards will be added to the Inventory.

Black Market:
-Remake the Black Market. Remove uncommon weapons from the Black Market. More powerful Customized Weapons are added to the Black Market. Upon each entering, players are allowed to choose one Customized Weapon, with enhanced features.
-Other items from the former Black Market are available at the Merchant.
Note: Enhanced features include: Damage, Capacity, Accuracy, Firing Rate, Velocity, Projectile Amount, and Bullet Versatility. These combinations make Customized Weapons more powerful, so pick with patience.

Steam Achievement:
-Steam Achievement is now available. Upon accomplishing a game achievement will unlock a Steam Achievement.

Balancing:
-HMG are equipped with 50Cal ammo now.

Bugs Fix:
-Enemy soldiers now DO NOT “occasionally move faster in the battle”.
-Some Companions' preference now matches the gifts. Good for them.
-Accepting a Faction Companion's quest will not cause an uncontrollable situation now.

Recently we were working on finalizing the plans on Freeman and came up with a new roadmap:

1. Add gambling
2. Add weather
3. Improve maps
4. Add artillery
5. Improve the camo system
6. Improve stealth mechanics

8. Make weapons feel more different

10. Improve UI
11. Add transfer money function for the faction treasury

But it may take a much longer time than usual because most of our guys are on quarantine and stuck in different cities. So we are hoping for your understanding.

Hello, guerrillas, we want to share with you our progress for the future update:

•   Now we have a better weather system. We added rain, storm, and adjusted lighting during the night. This will bring a more immersive experience for your gameplay.
•   Fixed the map borders to ensure enemies do not appear on the edge of the map.
•   Optimized the graphic quality, made the game package smaller in file size. Now the game loads quicker.
•   Optimized effect of the smoke grenades. Improved the frame rate.
•   Optimized the handling of guns. Made guns closer to the real experience, and also increased the technical requirements.
•   Optimized the skirmish maps, reduced the complexity of the terrain, which makes it easier to spot the enemy and better use of strategy.
•   Optimized the pop-up prompt after asking for help from friendly forces.
•   Added more bunkers and fortifications to villages and cities, this will make defense easier and siege more difficult.
•   Some sound effects are replaced by more realistic ones.
•   Optimized some UI performance, made the style clearer.

We have released the TEST version of the update v1.4

Many features have been added, but that's not the end of it. We keep working on the game to improve it as much as we can. The ETA for the main build is two weeks, but that all depends on the number of bugs we may encounter during further polishes.


•   Artillery support is probably one of the most anticipated features, so here it is. We have added quadcopters for spotting enemies and attack helicopters with mortars for engaging targets on the ground.

•   The camouflage system has been updated as well, so now you may want to choose it more carefully, as it can help you to be less easily detected by the enemy.
(In the camouflage system, the chance to be found by the enemy is determined by controlling the field of vision. Different terrain has different types of camouflage. The corresponding clothing will increase the camouflage degree. We adjust the value of camouflage degree to make the effect of camouflage degree more effective)
•   We have optimized the game's size and maps, so you can now load the game and enter the battle faster.
•   Balanced the growth curve and maximum HP value.

To Opt Into the Test branch
Launch the Steam Client.
Go to the LIBRARY tab.
Right click on Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare and select Properties.
Then click the BETAS tab.
Then select "test-Test Version" from the drop-down and close the window.
Then update the game and you are ready to go.
You can opt out at any time to get the default version of the game.

Bug Fixes from the Test Version
•   Fixed the bug, that could stuck in colliders on the map and couldn’t move.
•   Improved the weather system.

Wether the game has been abandoned or lacks hard from an unskilled development - it seems to be another exemple of a failed project, that probably found many buyers in the early access phase.

Glad to not having purchased this one, although the concept looked very interesting.

Obviously steam recently tried to milk the last bit out of it by discounting. And that for another product, which appears to not being in a state to bring any reasonable joy, but more or less frustration.

I got this from the beginning. I  liked where it was going and even got keys for some friends. I have not played in a long while but do remember that people were not happy after a specific update.

Maybe it will not be developed any more but this is not unique to this game, as you know. This is all to common.

As for Steam "steam recently tried to milk...". Yep...That's Steam. I always try to get the games direct from the dev as is the case with Matrix/Slitherine. It is funny how people trash Epic. Just take a look at Steams practices. Until recently Steam did not want to refund but regulations forced them to...Remember the Australian court case? And what's with the 2 hour play maximum for a refund? Many games require more than that to setup a character/tutorial etc... Steam is not your friend  :punishment

But now, only the most original members of KK will be working on the Freeman remake, and we are confident that we will bring a satisfying final result to you.

Currently, we are finalizing the design, and once we are done with that, we will share it with you. The overhaul will be put to the test build first, and then eventually will be out to the main build. The previous (current) main build will be kept as a separated branch at that moment,

Details Of The Overhaul- Why? What? When?

Hi everyone,

As we mentioned in our previous announcement, we are completely remaking the game. We saw that you had tons of questions for us, so we decided to write this article and clarify things up.

1. Why did we decide to remake the game?
As you may know, the game started with 3 devs, and the development progress at the beginning of Early Access went pretty smooth and steady. And to speed things up and improve the quality even more, we decided to bring some new members to the team. However, that didn't go well as we planned. We made a strategic mistake by adding new devs to the team too fast, without having them go through proper training and adoption. This caused massive delays and quality drop in development. We also mistakenly brought new designers and team leader to the project and trusted them to design some core systems and manage the project as a whole. Gradually, the product shifted further and further away from our original imagination. It was wrong to assume that people can always do the job the same way we do. We did realize that eventually, but we still had a bit of hope that it would turn out fine until we were financially broken and had to pause development.

After recovering from the bankruptcy and finally put ourselves together, we decided to remake the project. The reason is simple, the final product ended up being far from the communities' expectations and our original idea. And we can't just leave it this way. We have a huge bond to this game since we have poured so much time, effort, and sleepless nights into it. And we feel a huge responsibility to the game and the community due to our personality.

2. What do we think of the current build?
Gameplay-wise, we think the game is a bit complicated with too many unnecessary features that don't work well together. The core features, such as AI and gunplay, were not nearly polished. The game lacks tactical elements in combat, such as different maneuvers performed by specialized units(heavy machine gunners, mortar squads, snipers), armored units, and support. The overall combat experience becomes repetitive fast, while the over-world management seems overly complicated and irrelevant to the combat. The game also lacks a sense of progression and difficulty curve, which can easily break the game at a certain point. Graphically, the game can really use an overhaul. All the maps appear to be similar, especially the skirmish maps that look identical to each other. The look of soldiers and companions, in most cases, is poorly designed and out of place. The game also lacks a weather system which contributes to both gameplay and immersion.

3. What do we want to remake?
-Dramatically improve the combat:
We will enhance squad behaviors and AI tactics and emphasize the uniqueness of each type of squad. For example, a sniper team should stay hidden and behave like a spotter and long-range killer. The squad should also be equipped or upgraded with tactical gear that will benefit their specialty. For example, providing a binocular to a sniper team can increase their sighting range by 3. We will also add mechanized units such as an SUV mounted with a heavy machine gun. We will overhaul the shooting mechanics, so it is smooth but challenging to master.

-More meaningful over-world exploration and management:
We will make each conquerable location much more beneficial to you. It can provide you with essential resources needed to grow your force, such as troops, weapons, food, gas, cash, and so on. We will also focus on the uniqueness of each location. For example, a village can provide you food and local militias, a military base can offer you professional soldiers, and capturing an airport can grant you access to international aid and trade.

-Overhaul the graphics:
We plan to improve the graphics to the next level by using a better rendering engine, redesigning and remaking the majority of the maps, troops, companions, and items. We will add environmental effects such as fog, rain, storm, and so on. The combat maps will look different from each other. You will see mountains, meadows, forests, villages, towns, industrial areas, military camps, oil rigs, airports, and so on.

-Better progression:
We want the game to have a much more meaningful and smooth progression curve. Every step you take will be a step up (or down) towards your final goal, the country's liberation. You will always have something to work on or improve, such as upgrade your weapons, get better units, find suitable team leaders, promote your units in rank, conquer locations, and get war resources...

4. Who will make it happen?
This time, the core dev team will be the three of us, the most original guys. With our previous intense experience with this game, we clearly see how we can make it better. And with the technologies and skills gained these few years, we surely can make it happen. We also understand the importance of a great community, and with the support and feedback you guys give us, we are sure the game will turn out great.

5. When can you get the remastered version, and how?
You don't need to pay anything if you already have the game. You just need to wait for a major update that will give you a totally new experience. Once the build is ready, we will put it to the Beta-Testing branch, and you can try it out and provide us with feedback. Eventually, we will make it official and replace the older version of the game. Note that the older version is no longer being developed, but we will put it into a separate branch so you still can access it.

6. ETA of the release
To make these changes effectively, we have to overthrow the current project. So except for some assets, coding, and designs, there is nothing we can really recycle. It will take time. We are currently in the designing and researching phase. We have already started some coding and modeling but still in a very early stage. The ETA for the first test release will be a half year from now, but we will release more regular progress reports once we have some basics done.

A small update. The development keeps going, just not as fast as we wanted it to be. We do always keep in mind that people are waiting for the news and we will make it as soon as it will be possible.
P.S. if there was no development, I would say so. I don't see the point of lying about it, as our intention is to fix the game, not to ruin it more.

Hello everyone! Here comes the news on the progress of the upcoming remake of Freeman.

First of all, it is important to note that everything that’s showcased is a work in progress and is being subject to change. Secondly, the majority of our progress is in the tech part of the development, and the art-related part contains many placeholders and will be our next step of the development.

Currently, we are 80% done with the framework, and our next step will be adding content. So in the following months, we can expect more screenshots and maybe videos showcasing the new game.

On today’s screenshots, you will see the new squad customization screen, inventory screen, world map, and some combat maps in production. There are also a better weapon customization screen and a newly added faction and political map that was not in the game before.
