About This Game
WARTILE delivers a game experience unlike anything you’ve seen before. Bring your collection of miniature figurines to life as they aid you to battle it out in a real time strategy video game. Position your figurines, use their strengths and be mindful of their weaknesses, activate their special abilities and play your action cards to gain the upper hand on the playing field.

In the Viking Conquest campaign, players will get their first taste of the charming medieval fantasy universe we’ve been working on for years now. Wartile Launches March 17th on Steam Early Access

It’s with great pleasure and excitement that we finally can announce Wartile Early Access launch date on Steam to March 17th. With 3 years of development the team are proud and happy, that we have come such a long way and now feel confident to launch Wartile on Early Access.

Feedback from the community have been a huge help for us in locating and prioritize our tasks in the game design, but also in how to design features to come. We would like to share some of the feedback with you. In the 0.4.4 update many players felt frustrated by the combat mechanics and the cooldown system locking down figurines. With the 0.4.4.2 This was changed and navigation of the figurines during combat got much more fluent and the reception was very positive.

On Difficulty we raised the bar significantly throughout all Battle Boards and that shows on the feedback. Still the majority welcomed the change as a step in the right direction, with a few who voiced their fear of it getting too hard to enjoy the story.

Knowing that most of you guys love a real challenge and realizing that life as a Viking was no dance on roses, we are currently implementing difficulty levels on each battle board that will unlock when you have completed all objectives on the board. This new level contain more trained enemies and additional encounters, but will also offer you the chance to unlock some unique equipment. The new Board difficulty levels will not break it for those who are just looking for a great experience, but don't want to die trying.

From our latest Closed Alpha round we asked our players where they would like to see the next improvements.

For the next update we will introduce many new features to Wartile, as the pie chart above states, there is a desire for more playable content, deeper combat and customization. To highlight what we are working on here is a short summery, we will be going into details when we are just about the release the updates, as we work very iterative on each feature. Just now we are working on adding a Shop where you will be able to spend all the loot you earn. The first thing you will be able to buy is figurine classes, that you can bring with you into battle. Second we are introducing Enemy abilities adding more depth to the combat. Something that was highly requested by the Community. We have started adding Board difficulty levels that can be unlocked by completing all objectives, something that greatly will increase the single player content with a challenging experience and new rewards. We are also bringing in new Warrior and Spearman versions with their own abilities and different stats. We are also updating the whole story in a effort to add more local lore and story to each battle board. We hope that these new features will be well received.

For the next Steam update we will focus a bit on each Figurine Class and how combining their attributes and abilities in the battle matters.

Wartile is featured this week in OnlySP, with an extensive interview with our creative director Michael Rud Jakobsen. Check it out.


We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Michael Rud Jakobsen, CEO and Creative Director of Playwood Project. Founded in 2014, this fledgling Denmark studio is on its way to publishing its first title: Wartile, a real-time virtual miniatures game set within the brutal age of the Vikings.”Setting the Board”

Michael got a taste for independent game design early in his career, working for a small studio called Zeitguyz. “I was much more ambitious, having just come out of design school,” He recalls, “There I worked as an environment artist, and a lead artist… I came in pretty early, and there were four or five guys at the moment — the two founders and a few artists. I came in as an environment artist, and I had just come in directly from school, and I had no real experience in the industry. So it was learning by doing, since there is such a huge difference between what you learn in school and what you do in the industry.”

Like many budding game designers, Michael admits that the early days of his career were spent on a very tight rope. “I didn’t get any salary for more than one year,” he says, “I mean, coming straight from school, that was possible because I was used to eating spaghetti I guess or something like that. I didn’t have a huge budget, no family and such.”

Not only was this doable at the time, but it allowed him a level of singular  commitment to his projects that he enjoyed. “You really embed yourself in the project,” he explains, “It becomes part of yourself. And the indie companies depend a lot on the individual artists to provide good content and to come up with a lot of ideas, and because they are so small, they give a lot of ownership out to the individual developers. Ownership, and the feeling of doing something in a team, building up and sharing the good moments — everything is so close to you. When you show off the game, you are normally at the exhibitions yourself, so you really get close to the things you are doing and the people who would enjoy the product. So it was very much about self-driven motivation — the project moves by the energy you put in yourself.”

Like any independent studio, Zeitguys faced an upward battle — one that it eventually lost. There, Michael learned a great deal about what kind of struggles he might face one day with his own company. “Sometimes the structure is not in place,” he explains, “There’s no department for human resources. The budget is tight, so if you have a big family to support, it can be tough. You work a lot of hours I think — you also do that at established companies, but I don’t know, sometimes it feels like when you are in an indie company it’s also your responsibility. Even if you’re just an artist, you kind of share the responsibility to deliver on the different milestones, so it’s also very tough I think. And then it’s unknown, so you don’t know if you’ll get any backing or any investors and stuff like that. So there’s a lot of uncertainty about the next day, or the next week, or the next month.”

I hope you are ready to loot and plunder the spoils of the world, at least the world of Wartile. As a team we are extremely proud to have reached this huge milestone and are happy to be able to share it with all you guys.

Since our last update we have been focusing on getting as many new features into the game as possible, before the Early Access, while also focusing on stability and accessibility. We have not succeeded 100% in all areas, but we will be spending some energy in the upcoming weeks, to improve the accessibility and communication in the game.

Lets take a look at some of the new features.

The Campaign board
We have made a big art overhaul on the Campaign board, granting each section (figurine customization, figurine collection, card deck and the new Tavern, its own little box, with a fitting background. It’s a great improvement but still far from done.

Unlock-able difficulty stages
Each battle board now unlock up two new difficulty levels. These difficulty levels should offer the player a steep change in difficulty and I most cases better stats and equipment is needed to complete the higher levels.

The Norse Tavern
In the tavern, you can now view all the unlocked figurines during your play and if you have the gold to pay them and the fame to impress them you can hire them to your collection of Vikings. Changes to the item setup in the customization section.

Relics / Way points
The relics placed around the maps can now be used to save your progress on the map. If dying later on board, you can choose to load your progress from that way point instead of restarting the whole mission.

Story Cards & Objectives
Most story parts have been changed and we will introduce the main objectives with the main theme "Spoils of the world". At a later stage, we plan to make unique story strings (objectives) that will lead you through different battle boards, in a effort to complete it.

Also to mention some other updates.
•   New viking skins for the new tribes that will be introduced shortly
•   The armory had a big art upgrade, and changes to its setup.
•   Added a new tactical Card, The Bear Trap.
•   Added new animations to the figurines
•   AI units can now also use special abilities.
•   Major optimization pass on the Lost Norse battle board
•   Introduced the Unique items, such as the Skull of Norse.

And a great deal of other stuff...

We follow the Steam forum closely and pay attention to all the user reviews we get. We have also made it possible to provide us more detailed feedback through a Google form questionnaire, or just by rating us when leaving the game.

Community Announcements

Hi Everyone

It’s now 24 hours since we launched and the ride have been awesome. Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect but we are happily surprised by all the positive feedback and the relative low number of CRITICAL bugs reported.

We have tried to address some of the bugs reported, with a small patch.

•   The skull of Hel now correctly drops after reloading from a Relic / way point
•   When picking up Skull of Hel the objective now shows completed
•   Lost Norse battle board have been made slightly easier (Difficulty stages are unchanged).
•   We have tried to fix an issue where Camera get stuck at the start of the level. Please tell us if you experience this bug again.
•   We have added control feature that will identify a known bug and suggest ways to avoid it happen. The bug can occur when playing with low frame rate and all figurines stop fighting and the player is unable to select units. (The bug is removed by restarting the level.)
•   We have fixed a bug on the way point at coastline that only spawning three figurines instead of four when reloading.
•   We have added tool tips to more objects in the game to help communicate its functions.
•   You can now see the Multiplayer in the campaign menu, but its locked until the Coastline Battle board have been completed. The one with the monastery and its booming treasures.

Hi Wartile warriors

We have just release a small patch, that address some issues reported by our users.

•   The score board no longer count your summoned Lost Norse as lost units, for the purpose of score.
•   We have limited the number of Lost Norse that can spawn on the second battle board, this should prevent the game from crashing, in case you go for lunch during the battle.
•   You will now earn battle points when converting relics / activating way points.
•   Destroying boats now reward you with battle points.
•   Decreased the chance of spawning Lost Norse when wearing the Skull of Hel. Also for the enemy Ancient Norse boss on second battle board.
•   We have changed the way the stat card shows stats when hovering on items in the armory. We hope this will help people to compare stats on items. We are aware that more and better communication on stats and the use of items is needed.
•   Summoned Lost Norse figurines can no longer pick up the goat only to take it back to Hel, preventing the player to complete the objective in Tears of Eir.

We have another critical bug, that suddenly makes it impossible to pickup units and makes all figurines on the map stop fighting. This can happen if playing with very low FPS and can only be fixed by restarting the level. We just want to let you know that we are still working hard to find the root of this bug.

In our next mini patch we plan to address following issues, among others.
•   Stat card sometimes renders partly out of the screen
•   Adding more tool tips, explaining the use of items and features.
•   Improve the Tutorial board Tears of Eir with more introductions to key features.
•   Support Azerty keyboards.
•   Fix issue where the game starts with wrong resolution.

We hope these fixes will improve the game experience.

Hi everyone

Another small patch addressing bugs reported by our community, we will keep on crushing these bastards, as they get reported.

•   Fixed an issue where the game would startup in an unsupported fullscreen resolution
•   Fixed an issue where the mouse will stay within the full screen
•   Game now supports AZERTY Keyboards in the options menu. (This is a temporary measure until we finish our custom key bindings menu).
•   Number of owned items in Unit Management now updates when equipping/unequipping items.
•   Summoned Lost Norse figurines from the Skull of Hel, now lose health over time until they die.
•   Summoned Lost Norse can longer interact with interactive objects (levers, items, etc.) or move in and out of caves
•   Lost Norse units spawned by the Skull of Hel no longer interferes with ending the game by stepping onto the boat.
•   All boat at Lost Norse battle board tiles should now be eligible for ending the game. Previously the outer tiles would sometimes not count.
•   Fixed a bug that made the "Key Lever" on Hillside inoperable after loading a waypoint.
•   Fixed an issue with Treasure Chests, that made the random selecting less random than intended.


We hope these bug fixes will enhance the game experience for everyone.

Since launching Wartile we have closely been following the Steam forums closely and the feedback that you all have written to us through the Google questionnaire.

We have made a small Q&A, to give you all a better understanding of our plans for the future and share how how we plan to address some of the problems and desires that you generally have.

Q: For how long do you plan Wartile to be in Early Access?

A: Our production plans says 5-6 months, so if everything goes as planned that should be it. But the reality of game development is that its really hard to predict as most games becomes a beast of its own, and some features may take longer than planned.

Q: What additional content are you planning on adding to the game?

A: We already have three new and unique environmental themes in production. From these we expect to create more than 5 new challenging battle boards both for multiplayer and singleplayer. Apart from that we expect to introduce three new Viking classes, each in different versions coming from different tribes, with their own stat build and unique selection of ability cards.

With every major update we will also increase the amount of godly and tactical cards significantly in order to provide the players with a true feeling of diversity when assembling their deck.

A wide selection of equipment is also on the drawing board and will be introduced every time we bring a new Viking tribe or battle board update.

With the Early Access release, we have been focused on stability and a strong foundation in the game mechanics, that we can build upon. The past week we have focused on fixing various bugs reported by our community and soon we will be able to commit all our time new content, and required improvements.

Next planned content update - 0.4.5.0

New battle board challenge - The Rescue

You arrive under the darkness of night, silently moving like shadows to learn that the island is occupied by a large English garrison. Luckily everyone is sleeping, even the guards supposed to be on watch.

Next planned Adventure pack update - 0.5.0.0

•   Introducing a new battle board environment theme.
•   Adding at least one new Viking character class, with a set of unique abilities.
•   A new selection of unlockable godly and tactical cards.
•   New equipment sets, and much more.

We keep the details a secret for now :)

Q:Will there be monsters and mysterious creatures in the game.

A: Yes, the universe of Wartile is a fantasy universe inspired by history, mythology and lore. It contains beasts and creatures yet to be added with our upcoming updates. So arm yourselves!

Q: I would love to go on a viking raid to plunder and pillage with a friend, will you introduce Co-op play?

A: We see a growing interest in having the possibility to play Co-op and will investigate different options into how we can support this.

Q: I would like more time to think about my strategic approaches in the game, will you add a pause button or a system to play the game at a slower phase?

A: Pressing Spacebar will slow down the game significantly, giving you a small moment to breath and allow you to move a unit or play a card.

Q: I would like more information about each figurine and what their strengths are. I would also like it to know what the different items do and if they are possible upgrades to my vikings equipment, will there be added more information on stats?

A: We are aware that the current stat system is highly flagged by our community, and plan to eventually make an overhaul of the entire system, making it easier to learn more about each item and how they are different from each other.

Q: Will the game be released for other languages than english?

A: Yes, we are working on bringing the game to as many languages as possible, we however wait with this initiative until our next major content update ready as localization can be an time consuming task, once it's in, it needs to be maintained every time we release a new update.

Q: Will Wartile come to Mac & Linux?

A: We dearly hope so, but during the Early Access we aim to keep our in-house testing time as low as possible, leaving more time to develop. The systems support the more testing we have to do, for each small patch or content update. This is also the case regarding supporting VR, it would be awesome, but we are a small team.

So we wait, and hope you guys can wait with us.

We have just added another set fixes addressing some of the major issues people are experiencing. We finally caught the big one, we internally have called 'The Death Bug'.
A big thanks to all the people reporting their issues, it makes it a lot easier for us to quickly crush them!

Major Fixes:
•   Fixed a bug where Figurines and Objects become unresponsive and can't be moved.

Other Fixes and updates:
•   Sometimes coins would not spawn from chest.
•   Fixed an issue where all items looted would not be shown in the item customization.
•   Item customization now has arrows to switch through your collected loot, if you have more items than the amount which can be shown.
•   Figurines will no longer be deselected when clicking the terrain, which made it seem like their ability card was missing.
•   Paladin on Coastline have new AoE knockback ability.
•   Added some new tool tips in the menu.
•   Minor performance improvement to the internal ray tracing system.

We hope these changes will make the game more enjoyable. We are working hard on both fixing the last withstanding bugs and creating new content for you.

Content Update on the Horizon
14 APRIL

Two weeks have now passed without any news or updates but don’t worry we are working hard here at the office in Copenhagen attending to the last details for our first content update, and we are really looking forward to letting you guys play it and hear what you think.

Stealth Game Play
We have just started the final testing of the first content update 0.4.6.0 that we aim to release next week introducing a Battle board with stealth game play, where you will be able to pull, a real Loki plan on the poor Englishmen. We won’t reveal too much, leaving it up to you to discover it by yourself.

What to expect from the next Content update 0.4.6.0

We appreciate all the constructive feedback we've been getting on Wartile through Steam, we are listening! So far, we've already made numerous tweaks and fixes to the game based on what the community has been telling us, we've still got additional tweaks and improvements to the Wartile player experience to make but judging by what we're hearing, you love the game and what we've created so far, thank you!

Tears of Eir (Tutorial)
•   Tutorial now includes additional tutorial elements.
•   Explanation of unit targeting and how to change target attack
•   Explanation of godly and tactical cards
•   Explanation of battle points
•   Explanation of unit ability cards
•   Tutorial includes a secondary object “It’s a Trap”, that unlocks the “Trap” tactical card.
•   Units on first difficulty has been nerfed slightly

Lost Norse
•   Secondary objective “Destroy the Boats” now unlocks a new godly card: “Curse of Old Age” (!!! Missing art)
•   Ancient Leader and Ancient Norse now includes a small surprise on death.
•   The cave no longer contains a trap to find and pick up. (see Tears of Eir changes)

Hillside
•   Hillside has been made significantly easier on first difficulty. It was really hard to start with.
•   Secondary objective “War Rings” now unlocks new godly card “Heimdallr’s Vigil”)
•   “War Rings” objective has seen various changes
•   Rings now drop from “Heidrun Leaders”
•   Heidrun Leaders has been moved around
•   “Warhorn” objective has seen various changes
•   Objective is now called “Gjallarhorn”
•   The objective has been moved into the final cave.

Coastline
•   Completing Coastline now also unlocks Strength of Magni Godly Card

Wartile Top Survival Tips

If you're struggling on some of the harder levels of Wartile we've put together a few key tips to keep your Viking from meeting their Valhalla too soon. Be sure to use the customization option to equip your Viking with all the necessary weapons and armor before each quest begins.

•   Customize your fighters and utilize armor and weapons carefully, each Viking has a weapon that has its tactical advantages if used wisely on the BattleBoards.

•   Spearman are perfect for inflicting initial damage on enemy units while maneuvering an axe or sword wielding warrior in on the flank or even behind an enemy character.

•   Explore all areas of the map, its easy to overlook treasure chests that could make all the difference in your loot quantity.

•   Keep a close eye on your Vikings health, use the health cards to replenish health even in the heat of battle and draw your opponents in to a choke point on the map you can take advantage of.

•   Move quickly to eliminate Archers and avoid direct line of sight, ranged attacks from guard towers can inflict damage from a distance.

•   Completing battle boards on higher difficulty tiers will increase the battle experience of your Vikings as well as providing them with better equipment

We are very excited to finally release our first content update for Wartile. It has taken us a bit longer than we anticipated, but we believe it's a solid update, and one which will add more content while also improving the overall quality of the game.

The highlight of this content update is The Rescue battle board that introduces a new stealth oriented gameplay experience requiring you to plan and execute some swift attacks to avoid triggering an alarm thus compromising your mission. To accomplish this a correct figurine lineup and well assembled card deck will make a big difference on the battlefield.

We hope that this update will be well received and can ensure you that the next update is in full production. Please spend a few moments to give us your feedback about the game and the update here in the steam community or through the Detailed Feedback link when exiting the game.

21 May - Wartile

Hi everyone

It's more than about time that we share some details of all the progress we are making with Wartile, we know that we have been silent for quite some time, but we have just been very focused on development and all the new awesome things coming up with our next Adventure Pack and we are really excited to be able to share more about what we are working on. Actually there is so much new content that we have divided it up into three parts, that we will be posting during the next two weeks.

Introducing pickups

With the last update we introduced the pick-up feature where your figurines can pickup an item from the battle board and carry it around almost as an extra ability card. This is now something we want to expand on, by allowing the figurines to pickup items from the battle board that can be used instantly or become handy later on.

Oil Bomb carry
Simple Oil lamps used by the Heidrun Clan to light up their deep dark caves, can now be picked-up and used as a deadly weapon targeted the enemy, or even used to set fire to structures from distance. This deadly little package brings a dose of fire to your arsenal. Used wisely they can be an effective ranged weapon.

A Can of mead Instant use
A can of good mead not only strengthen your spirit but let you forget your battle wounds. Therefore a wise Viking always drink as much as possible during their raids. Small Cans of mead can now be picked up to immediately regain a small portion of your health increase.

New battle boards

The request of more content is our foremost priority and we are working hard to add more great battle boards to the game, we are however also very passionate about delivering content that gives you a new and unique challenge and experience every time we deliver a new battle board.

Thor's Wrath
It's said that when Thor visit Niefelheim he travel past the Heidrun gateway hidden deep inside the Heidrun dungeons. When this happens a great thunderstorm appears above the mountains and the Heidrun clan celebrate the presence of the god, with a great festival.

In this new battle board you’ll need to collect a set of relics that, according to the lore, could open a hidden passage to Niflheim.

Better communication

Some aspects of the UI have been flagged by our community through various feedback channels and in our effort to continuously improve the game experience for our everyone we are addressing those issues as we progress.

Combat notifiers
When figurines are engaged in combat small notifiers will pop above the figurines informing the the player about any combat modifiers coming from high ground position or flanking attacks, as well as buff effects coming from external sources. This should help players better understand the different type of modifiers that are in play during the battles.

info on Equipment
When hovering weapons on the armory wall, it should now be easier to compare unequipped items against the equipped. Additionally information about a weapons special abilities is now also described in the tool tip.

New Figurine classes
We feel ready to finally add new interesting figurine classes into the mix. This is something that also have been highly requested by our community and something that we hope will greatly add tactical diversity and depth into Wartile.

The archer
Perhaps one of the most feared classes on any battlefield is the archer, Viking archers with longbows typically made from Ewe or Elm utilized bows in combat and for hunting. Wartiles archer adds a new dynamic to your figurine set and ability for ranged attacks. Now you can trade off against those pesky watchtowers and rain down arrows on your enemy from afar.

New art on Cards

Another area that we’ve looked at in this update is how cards are represented within the game. The team reviewed the art we had in place at the launch of Early Access and these have been refreshed and updated with new art. You’ll see that new art has been applied to all the frame and pictures for the cards. The ability card frame now has a different color than the Godly and tactical cards to better distinguish them during play.

We really hope that you will find this a welcome visual improvement, also in regard to better understanding card functions and how they can enhance your playing experience and tactical decision making.

We are aware that the text sometimes can seem blurry or hard to read and we are looking into this issue.

We hope you all are doing well. From our office in Copenhagen, we do our best to get the next adventure pack ready for release, which should be shortly. With part two of what’s cooking we will introduce even more great content that we have been working on so let’s get started.

Trail of Tyr
As your Fame, richness and powers grow, the neighbor Vikings clans start to envy your success. One morning the Viking bandits break through your gates, eager to plunder everything you have rightfully earned. For how long can your withstand the waves of bandits.

This battle board directly engages you into battle with waves of incoming enemy bandings rampaging their way to the Jarl’s longhouse. Defend the village and the Longhouse for as long as possible, and set your own record in the process with the opportunity to impress your friends.
Draw upon every ounce of your Viking fighting spirit to defend the longhouse and village or embrace Valhall knowing you died fighting against overwhelming odds.

While the Waves should be infinite, it's possible to complete its difficulty tier reaching wave 20, unlocking the next tier, where everything will become even harder.

Headbutt - Brute Ability
The Brute kick have been replaced with the famous headbutt, that not only deal damage, but also stun the enemy for a short duration. When we say ‘use your head’ we don’t mean just from a tactical decision making approach.

Poison Jar - Tactical Card
Poisonous toads now roam the swamps. Secreted in their skin is a deadly nerve toxin.Captured, dried and crushed they create some very poisonous toad dust, that once added to fragile ceramic beholder provides a deadly weapon on the battlefield.

Story Card Illustrations
Our talented concept artist have done a great job illustrating the World of Wartile through all the story cards used to present the battle boards and player missions. They not only help portrait a mythological and mystical world but also shows the diversity between the different battle boards.

Group move
Group moving has been introduced as a feature in this patch. Holding down the Shift key while moving a unit, will automatically cause your other nearby units to move with the unit. This has been introduced to reduce the effect of traversal on larger maps.

Overview

Progression Overhaul
As we get closer to final release and get more content, we’re slowly starting to be able to organize our progression to our final vision. This means that the map progression has been changed slightly from our last patch.

•   The Rescue now unlocks after Heidrun Clan
•   Trial of Tyr (new map) now unlocks after Heidrun Clan
•   The Monastery now unlocks after The Rescue
•   Thor's Wrath (new map) now unlocks after The Monastery
•   The Archer (new class) now unlocks after Heidrun Clan
•   The Brute now unlocks after The Rescue
•   Difficulty has been rebalanced accordingly
•   Progression of experience and loot and gold cost of figurines has been rebalanced accordingly

Pickup Items
In our last patch, we added that characters could carry a Torch; expanding on this mechanic, we have now added items on battle boards that can be picked up. Pickup items will, after being picked up, appear on a character as an ability card that can be used to provide an effect, such as healing or throwing a bomb.

This mechanic will continue to be implemented and improved on in future content and likely added retroactively to existing battle boards.

Trial of Tyr
Added the new Battle Board “Trial of Tyr” adding a new game mode; Skirmish, that involves fighting against waves of enemies and surviving for as long as possible, with randomized events and enemy compositions creating a new and varying challenge.

Trial of Tyr like other maps can be completed like normal, but is also an infinite mode that allows you to test how many waves you can withstand.

•   New game mechanic: Wave defense
•   Events that change playing conditions
•   New Battle Board layout

Thor’s Wrath
Thor’s Wrath features battling your way through not only groups of enemies, but passing through a hazardous thunderstorm that is likely to cause some issues if you are not careful.

Thor’s Wrath features a vast network of caves with partying Vikings, where the element of surprise and tactical use of abilities will certainly be required, unless you choose to brave the dangerous thunderstorm.

New Figurine Class: The Archer
The first female character has been added to the game; The Archer. The archer is strong long range unit, that is particularly weak in close range. The Archer is higher skill cap unit that requires a lot of movement and micromanagement.

•   The archer class is now unlockable
•   The archer is a long range unit that requires active input to attack
•   Archer has the following abilities
  o   Starting ability, Volley: Fires multiple shots in quick succession
  o   Second ability, Rain of Arrows: Lets down a Rain of Arrows in an area dealing AoE damage to nearby units
  o   Third ability, Flaming Arrow: Fires a flaming arrow at a target that ignites the tile dealing massive damage.

2D Art Overhaul
We’re in the process of a full overhaul of all 2D graphics on cards and UI. This is a longer process and this update will contain the first batch of these primarily focusing on Player and Figurine ability cards, quests and Menu UI.

Art in the entire game will follow this new style that will be introduced until the game releases.

Other Updates
Added Quest Tracking

Battle Notifications
We have added a new Notification system that gives an indication of what effect buffs have and when units receive high grounds and flanking bonuses.

•   Battle notification appears when a unit enters a flanking position
•   Battle notification appears when a unit receives high ground defense bonus
•   Battle notifications appears when a units gains stat debuffs or buffs.

Item tooltips
In an attempt to further clarify the effect of items, we have added tooltips that will improve the feedback of the item’s effects.
•   Added tooltips to items explaining stats and special effects

AI Improvements
We’re improving a lot of things about the AI systems. Players will notice the following effects:
•   AI now properly moves through objects on the ground (such as Hel’s Helmet)
•   AI now reacts better to archers firing at them
•   AI now reacts to dangerous tiles

Other Changes/Bugfixes
•   Stat card (lower left corner) should now properly scale and move with different resolutions
•   Bear Trap is now permanently visible to the player using the card. Opposing players will see the trap setup, after which it will become invisible.
•   Slight changes to card system behind the scenes. Cards will move cleaner and have less blinking/artifacts as well being ordered differently
•   Fixed a bug causing friendly invites for multiplayer to not always function
•   Fixed a bug causing units killed with abilities and ability cards to sometimes not award experience
•   Units killed by neutral damage sources will no longer award battle points to the player
•   Minor combat changes (pending an upcoming larger change); Combat now functions slightly differently behind the scene and crits are now visible.
•   Fixed a bug causing debris to interfere with figurine movement
•   Fixed a bug that sometimes caused music to stop playing after pressing
•   Escape to open the menu.
•   Fixed various missing animations for the Brute figurine class.
•   Slow time now functions more smoothly. Slow time now properly interacts with other systems, such as no longer slowing down time while showing event card. Slow time will also no longer slow UI elements (such as unit ability cards).
•   Added hints to the menu to help new players understand more advanced concepts beyond the the scope of the tutorial.
•   We now save and list your high score on a battle board. This, however, does not work retroactively and will require you to replay maps to display.
•   Brute “Kick to the Groin” has been re-flavored to “Headbutt”
The godly card “Movement Speed” has been renamed to “Speed of Sleipnir”

How do I unlock all the new content ?

Hi everyone

For those of you who have already completed most of the battle boards there might be some confusion about how all the new content is unlocked and we regret that we have not been able to smooth this transition out better with the new update.

As we develop new content to the game, we are not just building more content to the end of the game, but work with the whole game. This means that when we add content to a part of the game that you have already completed, the saved game might not register the new updates correctly. While you keep all your current progress you might need to complete one of the previous battle boards to unlock the new one. Remember you only need to complete the main objective to unlock the next board.

We are sorry about this, but want to avoid force resetting the saved games as of yet, until we have a good way to reward everyone who have been playing, pillaging and looting awesome stuff for a long time now.
We have included an overview of how the battle boards unlock each other with the current setup. So, in order to unlock Trial of Tyr and The Rescue you have to re-complete The Heidrun Clan and to unlock Thor’s Wrath you have to re-complete The monastery.

You can always consider resetting your save game and lose everything but gain the full experience and challenge of beating all the boards again. We do this all the time :)

Balance Changes:
We got a clear indication that the difficulty of the game was too high. As such we have taken steps to bring back the difficulty slightly on particular maps early on in the game.

This will primarily affect the first playthrough of battle boards and not the higher difficulties.

•   Nerfs to various enemy units on The Heidrun Clan
•   Added heal pickups on The Heidrun Clan
•   Nerfs to various enemy units on The Rescue
•   Nerfs to various enemy units on The Monastery
•   Nerfs to various enemy units on Trial of Tyr

Bug fixes
•   Before a figurine ability card on cooldown could appear behind another card, but the logic thought it was in front of. The backside of cards now have the correct z-ordering removing this issue.
•   Some cards have been reordered. The primary reason this was done was the Archer's "fire" card, which now appears first in the figurine abilities.
•   Fixed various blocked tiles that were not intended to be blocked
•   Fixed a bug that allowed The Archer to "sneak" past all enemies on The Rescue.
•   Changed the way the Resolution drop down menu is filled. This should no longer add options that are not compatible with the users screen.
•   Fixed spelling errors in The Lost Norse
•   Fixed a bug that caused subsequent uses of the Brute ability "Wrath of Idunn" to not remove the immportality effect
•   Updated the Archer text from a placeholder text that was not properly overwritten.

We know that not all reported bugs have been addressed with this patch but we are working on a major update where we will attend all reported bugs that we can identify and reproduce.

We also hope that the difficulty settings now in a better way reflect the level of our audience. Please remember that only main objectives needs to be completed in order to unlock new battle boards and that Spacebar is your friend in the fray of battle.

Hi everyone

We hope you are doing great out there. As we have been cheated from the Danish summer with nothing but rain and dark clouds it means we have been sitting indoors at the office grinding new features into Wartile and adding polish where needed. We strongly believe that the game really is starting to shape up and delivers a satisfying RTS experience. All this is thanks to you guys for rooting for us and giving us lots of useful feedback, helping us prioritize our battles.

This latest update we have introduced
•   The merchant (a shop for purchasing new equipment)

Slowmo while performing an action. (testing)
We are testing with a small slowdown when performing an action such as moving a figurine or using an ability card. This greatly improve the flow of the battle as there is no hurry to pickup, drag and point ability cards to a target or moving a figurine to the right tile, since the time will almost freeze when doing this.

Warning : Your saved game might be lost with the next update.

With this patch we have made so many changes with the progression system and the way we handle equipment, that there is a very likely chance it will effect your hard earned saved game and all the progression you have made so far. This is something we are obviously trying to address and we are looking into ways where we can limit the potential damage to saved games. However, to some degree this is hard for us to avoid as being in early access is a bit like making a cake that’s already in the oven - adding new things and changing the recipe when it’s already cooking might not always come out the way you hoped. We hope you will understand and we will get back with more information when we have the full overview.

This is all for now, we will be following up during the week with a few more details on some of the mentioned improvements but make sure you jump on our Facebook page and let us know what you think of the update.

The last few weeks we have been testing and adjusting the next big Wartile 0.6 update, and are counting down to finally release it.

As we did with the last time we had a major update for Wartile, we made a soft launch to the Wartile Testing branch, giving those of you who are interested, a chance to preview the new updated version of Wartile a few days before it goes public.

The Dark Forest
A big addition for this update is The Dark Forest - a dark and mysterious place at the foot of Yggdrasil the tree of life.

Patch Notes 0.6

Disclaimer: Your Saved game have been partly changed due to fundamental changes to our equipment system. .

We have tried to keep your overall progression in Wartile, but all your equipment have been turned into gold and your figurines re-equipped with basic items.

Depending on your progression you will be able to restock your figurines by purchase new equipment from the merchant who will restock every time you complete a battle board.

We recommend you to fully reset your save game, in order to get the full experience and please tell us how you like the changes and all the new content so far.

Disclaimer: Multiplayer not working while we work on a new matchmaking system.

we regret to inform you that we have been forced to disable to multiplayer game mode. We have been working on improving the matchmaking and have not been able to finish the work for this update. However we expect it to be enabled again shortly.

Thank you all for the feedback and bug reports. This is invaluable in helping us improving the Wartile experience!

New:

- Updated pick up, unit ability and player ability card text to help players make informed decisions. This follows the new style of unveiling the numbers of the game.
- Added “Reset to defaults” option for keybindings.
- The “buy button” in the Merchant and Tavern menus is now a full clickable button, instead of only the pouch image.
- Optimized units, animation and interactive objects to improve performance.

Bug Fixes:
- Fixed an error that caused the game to crash when using the “Next/Previous” arrows in the merchant after buying all items.
- Fixed an error that allowed players to click during camera intros. Clicking on certain objects could cause incorrect behavior sometimes freezing the game state.
- Fixed an error that caused certain objects/abilities to create walkable points outside of tiles on invalid locations. Note: This fix addressed certain specific cases, if you still see this behavior, please inform us!
- Fixed an issue with all of the “Heidrun Sword” variants having incorrect collision presets, which caused issues when trying to equip them.
- Fixed an issue in Unit Management, that sometimes caused a crash if the amount of Arm and Leg items varied too much. This was due to an incorrect reference.
- Fixed an error that caused key binding options to disappear when changing key bindings.

After update 0.6
Almost two weeks have passed since our latest major update and we are happy to see how well the update have been received, from positive reviews and comments both here on Steam but also from our external feedback channel. It shows us that while we still have issues to deal with we are moving in the right direction, thanks to all of you who help us focusing on what matters to you.

As we move forward, we are still receiving bug reports, from our community and will release another hotfix patch anytime soon, addressing some of the issues. Whenever we think it’s safe to move forward, there is always a hidden trap(bug) slowing us down.

WARTILE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
We have added a Wartile Deluxe Edition to the Wartile shop containing the Wartile game and the Original Wartile Soundtrack that sets the mood and atmosphere in the game. The Soundtrack is composed by Simon Holm List who have been sound designer in the game industry for more than 10 years and we are very happy that we finally can make the Soundtrack available.

Being part of Early Access means that you have the opportunity to not only experience but also influence the development of a game. As we have done before we would like to share some of the information and feedback that we are receiving from our community.

Some of this information we use to get an immediate impression of the player satisfaction with the game experience. We also get that from the steam reviews and comment sections in the community Hub, but these are usually from hundreds or more players.

From our internal user feedback, we can see our balancing of the battle boards is much better with the update where more players express that they have a good experience with the challenge.
We do however still have a few battle boards that are reviewed as being hard to unforgiving.

The intention on difficulty is that the first tier should be challenging but foremost teaching and a bit forgiving. The second tier more challenging and less forgiving and the third tier to be demanding require you to master your figurines and their abilities. As you can imagine it’s demanding to find a difficulty level that fits everyone, and we are working hard to create content that both our casual and core players can enjoy.

Below we want to share some of the feedback regarding the difficulty setting that we have been receiving.

The graph shows the from a broad perspective we have succeeded in finding better balance in difficulty for the majority of our players.

This graph shows us a significant decrease in players who think the game is too hard which usually is very destructive for the motivation of keep playing. We are satisfied with this progression but are aware that we still need to engage our more hardcore audience with some painstaking challenges, there can put their Wartile skills to the test.

We also look at the overall player satisfaction with the game experience. This gives us a more general indication if we are moving in the right direction and if the improvements and added content actual makes a difference to the overall user experience.

The increasingly satisfaction positive indication for us, showing that we are addressing key features that makes the most impact for the players. We still have lots of features that needs refinement but we we are on the right track.

The graph below showing how the ratings of the overall game experience have changed since our Early Access back in Marts 2017.

In this rating system players are asked to rate Wartile with One to Five stars before leaving the game, where 5.0 would be the best score.

These numbers are collected from thousands of players leaving us ratings and shows a steady improvement in our overall rating since we started on Early Access.

Still some way to go
What can’t be shown on a graph is the comment fields of what our players don’t think is working well.

Here we will try to summon up some of the most common requests.

•   Being able to remove equipment applied to a figurine.
This is possible with the patch 0.6.2, however it will remove all equipment and not just single parts
•   In general Players would like better UI communication and usability
•   The usability of godly and ability cards. It can be tiresome to keep dragging them onto the screen or hard to hit the actual target/figurine.
We will enable key bindings for quick selecting cards to the mouse pointer, in a future update.
•   Problems with fuzzy fonts on some cards in the game.
This is an engine issue, we use 3D widgets, we are slowly converting our UI cards into 2D widgets that render more precise.
•   Not being able to compare items at the merchant with items already owned.
We are still trying to figure out how we can improve this
•   More and better information about buff or de-buff effects in the game.
•   Camera rotation and movement could have user settings.

Wartile fan localization
The desire for having Wartile localized is high, and we would love to provide that for our player base. However, as a small studio we will be depending on fan created localization to begin with.
Therefor we ask our community if someone would be interested in making a fan localization of Wartile into their native language and thereby opening Wartile for a wider audience.
Currently we think to start with
•   German (already started)
•   Spanish (already started)
•   Russian
•   Polish (already started)
•   French
•   Simplified Chinese
•   Japanese (already started)

If your native language is not mentioned above and you are up for the task to help with the localizing into your language, please let us know.

Currently there is 11.100 words in Wartile, mostly short descriptions, but we still expect it to be a big and time-consuming task.

If you help us localize Wartile to your native language we will add your name in the credits and give you our official thanks for helping a larger audience enjoy Wartile.

Working on the last content before release
As some of you might have noticed we are moving closer to our final release and are currently working on the last major update before release. We will soon reveal what we are working on, but for now we will leave it with this.

We just wanted to drop by and let you all know what we are working on. We expect to release a minor update anytime soon, fixing bugs and adding in some new cool content and features.

Unique Power Tokens
One of the more significant additions is unique token slots that we have added to the game. These tokens are more rare than ordinary stat tokens, that drops at the battle boards. We are currently working on 11 new power tokens, each with their own passive powers to boost a figurine. Here are a few examples:

•   Thor’s Roar -Provides a damage bonus to the figurine
•   Odin's Ravens -When the figurine lands a killing blow, a raven will appear to aid, for a short duration.
•   Tyr's Courage -When the figurine is hit, there is a small chance that all cool downs will reset on all friendly units.
•   Inspiration Of Heimdallr -The figurine emits an aura that provides a small attack and defense bonus to nearby friendly figurines.

New Godly Cards
We are also introducing six new godly powers that can be unlocked from existing battle boards. Here are three examples:
•   The Draugr Shrine -a dark power originating from Hel. The player summons an evil relic, that will spawn Draugr for a limited time who will attack anyone nearby.
•   Freyr’s Hex - the ability to turn an enemy figurine into a harmless frog for a limited time, very effective for crowd control, and with a little twist.
•   Pilgrim’s Madness -The targeted figurine will shortly turn insane and attack nearby figurines, friends of foe.

Fan Localization
Some of our awesome fans have spent a lot of energy and time, making Fan Localization of Wartile and thanks to their dedicated effort we will soon be able to support following languages.

We are happy to release our next rather extensive update including a whole new Battle board created in the best Halloween spirit where we celebrate a productive summer and prepare for the cold dark winter with a sacrifice to Freyr and the spirits roaming around us hoping for their blessings and goodwill.

To celebrate Álfablót (or Halloween as the Christians among us call it) we have a 20% discount on Wartile during the Steam Halloween Sale.

Another great announcement is that we officially have partnered up with
DECK 13as our publisher. DECK 13 is one of Germany's leading developer studios with major releases such as Lords of the Fallen Lords of the Fallen and just recently The Surge. DECK13 is also running a publishing department aimed to assist Indie studios as ourselves to penetrate a crowded market and help us bring Wartile to other platforms.

The Álfablót Battle Board
The Álfablót is a Norse Celebration in honor of Freyr and to offer respect to the spirits in the coming of the dark winter. In this Battle board Witches of Nature gather around Frays alter at the foot of Yggdrasil to open a spiritual link to Alfheim and through this communicate with the Elves and gain magical powers. During their chanting, Landvættir (land spirits) are attracted from near and far, and some are easily provoked.

Shortcuts - kind of a game changer
We have made keyboard shortcuts to improve the general controls in the game. You no longer need to drag and drop cards but can use either 1.2.3.4.5 to quick select cards to the mouse pointer or use Q to toggle between your godly cards and E to toggle between ability and pick-up cards.TAP will toggle between your figurines. We are pleased with the result and think it's a significant improvement and are excited to hear what you think.


Bug Fixes:
•   Fixed the Token equip menu to work with all resolutions properly
•   Removed a stray Heidrun Archer from the Dark Forest map
•   Fixed an error allowing the AI to move inside totems.
•   Fixed an error causing you to be unable to pick up “Bones” on the Dark
•   Forest if your unit was already carrying an item
•   Fixed incorrect values causing the Heidrun Leaders not to wear any equipment on the second difficulty
•   Fixed an error causing interactable objects sometimes not to be reachable when it should be.

Hi everyone

We have just released a minor update addressing a few features or issues.

Campaign board
Changes to the light in the campaign scene. We have kept the dimmed light but removed the pumpkins from the Halloween theme, they were starting to root.

Added new animations
•   Coughing when standing in a poison cloud
•   Pickup animations when opening chests and gathering herbs
Other
•   Ability Æsir's Respite no longer needs a unit target
•   Volvas on Alfablot level now stands in a dramatic pose while enacting their ritual
•   Fixed a visual bug when selecting a level, the token would use the wrong image when hovering
•   Fixed a bug in the merchant: When buying all items, it wouldn't generate a new collection of items correctly
•   Units can no longer stand inside the Totems at the Yggdrasil board
•   Fixed render issue where tutorial card at Tears of Eir was white
•   The medicinal herb at the far East could not be taken.

Besides these fixes and changes, we have also upgraded the version of Unreal Engine to the new 4.18 version

We are thrilled to finally be able to release the Adventure Pack 0.7 that brings two new Battle Boards, a fully enhanced Campaign menu and a few new Battle Cards into the mix.

One of the new Battle boards will take you to Jotunheim the land of giants. In the quest to unravel the secrets of the gods you learn about Mimir’s well of Wisdom, from where Odin sacrificed an eye for a sip of its water to gain incomprehensible Wisdom.

We’ve received a lot of feedback on two parts of the game we needed to address. First that inability to properly compare items and the lack of ability to compare items in the merchant with items equipped with figurines.
•   The merchant now allows you to browse owned items and compare owned items
•   The merchant now allows to sort your inventory according to items in the shop (by selecting the item)
•   The merchant now handles both selling and buying, as opposed to the Customization screen handling selling of items.

Note that we are still monitoring feedback on the merchant and aim to make more improvements to the functionality and visual layout.

Campaign Menu improvements
•   Added a contextual “hint” for each menu to help players understand the menus
•   Various menu art updates and menu polish
•   Added highlights to help players notify them which menus new things have unlocked in.
•   Added tooltips to many parts of the menu that was previously unexplained
•   The stat card has received an art overhaul (pending more changes later).
•   The stat card now shows the unit name instead of unit type.
•   The ability cards in the tavern should now have more readable text. Hovering over ability cards will now make them larger to help readability.

Other Improvements
•   Added a new introduction screen when starting a new game
•   Added a Credits menu
•   Various improvements to sound/music in the game
•   Various new sound/music in the game
•   Improvements to certain figurine bones/animations
•   Loading screen improvements.
•   The Deck Manager no longer shows duplicate cards. This should help clarify that you can only have 1 of each card in your deck.
•   Improved animation feedback in the Deck Manager to help explain what is going on

“ I have taken apart my originally 16 seconds slow paced action music and added randomization to it. All to make it sound interesting, evolving and dynamic instead of being just a repetitive annoying static loop. Those 16 seconds of music easily turned into more than 4 minutes in this video. Longer than each action event will ever last in the game.”

The google questionnaire
Some of you might know that we ask for feedback through a questionnaire from the exit menu. This time we have made a more thorough questionnaire to help us get a better overview of your thoughts about certain features, figurines or battle boards in Wartile. It will take about 7-10 minutes and your input is a great help for us to understand the game experience from your perspective better.

We have just released a Hot Fix patch addressing some bugs that have been reported to us.

Highlights addressed by the communiy

Purchased items was lost
This was a very grievous bug, where new equipment bought in the shop got lost, and we apologize to those that have experienced it. it's fixed now and again safe to spend your hard earned gold.

Ability Highlights/Targeting
Targeting and highlights of abilities have gotten another pass that more properly highlights valid targets. This means that highlights now respects Line of Sight and correctly highlights valid targets instead of highlighting based on range.

Health bar improvements
We are currently testing some improvements to health bar that allows a quicker overview of unit health. This is done by adding “sub-lines” for every 25 HP or slightly thicker lines every 100 HP on very durable units.

Health bar on breakables
Besides, we’ve added a visual “counter” on breakable objects to display how many hits are required to break them.

Soundtrack
Added brand new track
•   Jötunheim Home of the Giants

Adjusted Loudness (LUFS) and Eq on these tracks:

•   05 The Lost Norse
•   08 Juleblot

We have also fixed lots of other issues as listed below.

Bug Fixes:
•   Fixed a critical error in the merchant that caused weird interactions when trying to equip, unequip and sell equipped items.
•   Removed the cooldown between uses of the “slow time” feature, which could cause some annoyance if misclicked or if trying to time abilities.
•   Fixed multiple issues with the “Freyr’s Omen” unique token.
•   Reduced the requirements to interact with Interactive Objects. The two primary conditions that block use, are enemies threatening (adjacent to) the Interactive Object or the unit interacting with the object is being attacked.
•   Visual improvements to the summoning of Lost Norse from the Skull of Hel and the Godly Card.
•   archer couldn't pick up the goat while shooting the tutorial enemies
•   When finishing the ice cave board, the game gets stuck on the load screen
•   [BB1v2 - Lost Norse] When all characters died the level continued
•   [BB7v1] Map didn't end after all my units have died
•   [BB2v2] Ghost pulls unit out of the screen
•   [BB4v1 - Jotunheim Fort] Level doesn't End properly asks to end twice
•   [BB1v2 - Lost Norse] Frogs have white circular plane beneath them
•   Freyr's Omen is sometimes not working properly
•   The range outline for ranged attacks doesn't correspond with the actual range of ranged attacks
•   Text on the final chest on BB5v2 (Coastline) was wrong.
•   [UI] "Menu" Icon in the starting screen opens the game menu but does not close it
•   [BB2v1 - The Dark Forest] Altar of Freyr - greenery is not removed when loading a waypoint
•   When a frog moves at roughly the same time as the player unit they will overlap each other
•   Flickering text at the intro to the defense mission 'Prüfung des Tyr'
•   When unequipping something, it won't appear in the equipment menu
•   Lightning feels unfair and frustrating (we have nerfed the lightning a bit)
•   Items Moving in the Shop, unable to read stats

Hopefully this patch with fix most bugs, but if you meet any on your adventure make sure to report them to us.

After years of developing, iterating, testing, changing, listening and polishing we are finally ready to push Wartile out of the nest and see if it can fly by itself.

Sometimes it has felt like an impossible and endless endeavor to reach the quality level that we aimed for, but luckily we have made most of this journey together with our community and early access players who have contributed with valuable feedback, inspiring and helping us to keep on going and focus on the right features.

With today's release, we are delighted with the result and hope everyone can now immerse themselves in WARTILE’s rich, Norse mythology-inspired narrative and awaken their inner Viking!

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of something bigger as we would love to see the Wartile universe expanded with new fantastic stories, themes and realms.

Oh, and we have made a rather significant update aimed to make Wartile a bigger, better and sharper experience but to keep this announcement short and precise we will stay with the headlines.

More Story!
As requested by nearly everyone, we have been adding a deeper world story and narrative, and while it's still heavily focused on the world and its gods and mysteries, it also aims to enforce the overall progression of the game.

Reputation
Your Warband now earns reputation points that can be measured against the different battle boards tiers, helping you to identify their difficulty. It serves to guide and should not be considered a rule.

Unique Items
Lots of unique weapons and magical items have been added to the world, and they are all for your taking. From the Campaign board, all the spoils and loot from each battle board can be viewed before venturing further.

Renaming Figurines
Curry Days Forever or Mashee the meticulous, whatever matches your fantasy hero character. You now have the ability to rename your figurines to your own liking!

Overall polish of the UI
A general, all-around update of the UI has now made it much better and more beautiful. We know that the UI has not been the strength of the game and we hope these improvements will help.

Fixed tons of bugs
Hundreds more than there are Draug in Lost Norse or Evil spirits at Alfablot, and they just seem to rise in an endless stream to hunt us. But thanks to the QA team at DECK13, we are victorious. Should you, however, meet one, please report it to us in the steam forum :)

Left is only to wish everyone good luck on their dangerous journey into a world ruled by selfish men and restless gods in their quest to reveal the secrets of Midgard and beyond.

As it often happens with games when exposed to a broader audience with different playstyles, taste, and expectations. We see lots of feedback pointing in all directions, and we are still trying to digest all the input into something that we can take action on.

We have just released a patch focusing on solving some of the issues reported the last few days, and we hope that this will clean out most of the annoying problems.

You should also know that we are working on another patch implementing achievements into the game.

With this patch we have also made it possible to full pause the game by pressing (default key) P, allowing the player to explore the battle board and enemy positions. No interactions are possible during the pause, it's meant for coffee breaks and as a tactical reflection/exploration break.

Hi everyone

Stepping out of Early Access was an awesome experience, and we have been pleased to see Wartile being enjoyed by so many people. During the first few weeks, we were busy fixing bugs and adjusting features that had slipped through our testing. we also implemented achievements with a slight delay.

Wartile is much more than just a game; it’s a system that we intend to keep expanding on to make it bigger, better and richer by adding more content and keep polishing the gaming experience. We aim to both build new content for everyone already part of the universe, but also to improve features and mechanics that we can learn from our community need more attention.

Here are some of the new things we are working on

Ability timing and communication
We feel that that ability used by enemy figurines could communicate better and we are working towards making it clear which abilities are being used and inform you if you can counteract them. An example of this could be showing that a figurine is actively casting an ability, allowing you to stun the figurine to stop the casting. In general, abilities will be the same but with more information, if you can avoid or prevent them.

Battle Encounters
We intend to improve the overall presentation of encounters and their tactical challenges for the player in a relaxed and exploration-friendly environment offering the player more time to plan for each encounter while also enforcing the narrative experience of each board.

New Battle board
Draugr is on the move, and dark clouds of evil will soon cover Midgard.

Small adjustments
We are revisiting Alfablot to make sure that players can complete the difficulty tiers instead of dying trying. The same goes for some of the masochist achievements, that might need a second sanity check, together with other reported issues.

The Dark Ages
We have also started working on something bigger for Wartile, and we can reveal that things are looking grim in Midgard, and the realm will soon enough be needing its heroes again.

PAX East
Also: April is around the corner, and PAX East is about to begin. And as you now have already guessed it: We’ll be at PAX this time, for the first time. Showing off something… new for the game which will come to the PC Version as well but which affects the game itself and its future, too. Sounds cryptic? Well, to make it a bit more precise: Soon you’ll have another option to chose how you want to control your Vikings! Meet us in Hall A, Booth 10052 to learn more.

We are keeping our cards close, but want to let you know that we are cooking like crazy from our office in Copenhagen and we are looking forward to sharing more.

We are back, and excited to announce that the major update that we have been working on for months now is almost done and ready to be released.

With this new update, we have made some significant changes that improve not only the tactical aspect of the game but also affect the overall game experience.

Before announcing the official release of the update, we would like to invite those of you interested, to try out the new build and provide us with your feedback. Your opinion is essential for us in evaluating the design and direction of Wartile.

In your library find right-click wartile and select properties from the drop down menu

In Wartile - Properties select “Betas.” In the window “Select the beta you would like to opt into:” choose “Beta”. Now your Library should start to update to the new build, and once the update has is installed, you should be ready to go.

Please keep in mind that during the next week well will be tweaking the Beta build based on your feedback and our observations with the build; however, we do not expect there to be any significant changes.

PrePatch Highlights
•   The story has been rewritten and is now narrated with voice over.
•   A new encounter system has been implemented throughout all missions changing the way
•   you engage with the enemies.
•   Ability warnings and casting time have been added making it possible to see when enemies use an ability and sometimes it's even possible to interrupt them.

Hi Everyone

Since the Launch of Wartile back in February, we have continued to work on Wartile with the intention to improve specific areas of the game and today we are finally ready to release a significant update to Wartile.

The free update, which has been in the works under the codename “True Viking Edition” improves Wartile in countless ways, most importantly redefining the whole story of the game. The complete story was rewritten and is now supported by cutscenes and a famous narrator George Blagden, known for playing Athelstan in the award-winning TV Show Vikings.

Key gameplay features have also been reworked to make the game more accessible and with the intention to apply a deeper tactical aspect to the game.


To celebrate the new update, Wartile is currently 40% off on Steam.

Campaign

New story
We are excited to introduce a whole new story for Wartile now narrated by George Blagden who did an awesome job of bringing the new story alive.

Game Play Changes

Movement overhaul
We changed the movement system to provide a more consistent experience. If your figurine is on a movement cooldown, you can queue its move, and it will move once the cooldown is done. Besides, figurines can now move through friendly figurines. This ensures a much more smooth experience both during and out of combat.

New Encounter system
Our new encounter system is a new interesting way of presenting enemies on the battle board. Instead of a dynamic AI that moves around the board as you play, we have combined the enemy encounters into small static parties that becomes alive when you enter their encounter zones as you explore the board.

Figurine Ability Warning system
•   Abilities are now visually shown in the UI with an icon and a “casting time” when used.
•   Abilities can have "casting time" allowing to react and break the casting time
•   Casting time has been added to the majority of enemy abilities (to give counterplay options)
•   Moving enemy functionality to abilities such as spirit teleport, Volva teleport, etc.
•   Also, ability special effects have received an overhaul; changing to something that should be easier to parse visually.

Three types of abilities
•   Instant cast and effect - Player can’t interrupt or avoid the effect
•   Delayed cast with instant effect - Player can interrupt and avoid the effect
•   Instant cast but delayed effect - Player can’t interrupt but maybe move to avoid the effect

Updates to difficulty tiers and enemy encounters
To increase the enjoyment of playing the difficulty tiers we have updated some of the enemy encounters with new abilities.

BB2v1 Volva of Death
•   Increased her number of abilities and made her into a more boss fight experience.
•   Added a new spearman officer with “bear trap” ability BB2v2 Volva of the Forest
•   Teleport is now an interruptible ability and gave it additional poison effect
•   Spirit teleport is now an interruptible ability

Changes to Waypoints
•   Waypoints will now respawn your dead figurines.

Near Death warnings
•   When figurines die the first time, they're reduced to 1 hp
•   Time slows down for a short while to allow the player to react
•   After happening, this incurs a 30-second cooldown before it can happen again

Bear traps
•   Bear traps now occasionally emit some smoke to give away their presence

UI
Ability and Action Cards
•   Unit Ability and Action cards have a new feedback method for targeting and use that should make the use of cards more responsive. Also, a number of new action cards have been added.
•   The Cooldown icon is now displayed on the top right corner of the cards and is grayed out when on Cooldown.

Progression
New action cards and changes to figurine abilities
•   We have added some additional action cards to bring in deck management earlier in the progression cycle. During this process, we have made some changes to figurine abilities as well.

Action Cards:
•   Rage: Send your figurine into a rage increasing his attack speed while decreasing defenses
•   Banner: Spawn a banner on the field providing bonuses to nearby friendly figurines
•   Supply Crate: Spawn a random item
•   Roadblock: Spawn a roadblock that slows nearby enemy figurines.

Ability Cards:
•   Replaced “Banner” on Hakon with the new ability “Axe Throw”
•   Axe Throw: Throw an axe dealing damage to target enemy figurine
•   Swapped “Shield Push” and “Armor Break” on Hakon and Jorim

Unlocking difficulty tiers
•   Secondary objectives are no longer required to unlock higher difficulties. New UI feedback has been added to show if a player has completed all objectives or only the primary.

The Tavern
•   Figurines are now always shown in the shop, allowing the player to preview figurines that will become available during the game.

Changes to the Battle Boards
•   New cutscenes introducing critical points in the story
•   In connection with the changed narrative the Battle Board Home Village a new tutorial map has been added.
•   BB1v1 Goat objective has been slightly changed (Goat is picked up from the tutorial map)
•   Battle Board 1v3 has been added as a small outro map in connection with the story update.

(Prologue Board The home village)
•   Updated the tutorial to reveal the various items and hints on the fly.

Alfablot Board
•   Moved some of the groups around. In particular, the "greater spirit" is moved to less frustrating positions.

One week has now passed since our major patch update, and as expected we have been busy reviewing both feedback and hotfix issues reported by our community.

We have collected all the hotfixes since the patch 1.1 release in this announcement.

The 40% discount on Wartile will be running for another week, so there is plenty of time to let your inner Viking out if you haven't already :)

Hotfix Patch 1.1.3

Added Casual difficulty mode
Finding the exact level of difficulty that fits the most people is very hard. And we could tweak Wartile up, down and sideways forever and still some would find it too easy or difficult.

To embrace everyone we have created a casual difficulty mode in addition to the normal mode, that players can toggle between at any time from the options menu. With casual mode, all your Vikings get a significant boost to their stats, let's call it the blessings of Odin :). The player still needs to apply a certain amount of tactical attention to the combat.

We hope that some of our players will embrace this option as an invitation to get back into the fight.

Other issues:
•   Lost Norse Battle board, after reloading from waypoints to many Lost Norse enemies would spawn from the boats.
•   Slightly increased the spawn rate of Lost Norse from boats at the Lost Norse board.
•   Reduced the damage from poison bombs on Lost Norse Tier One, while also increasing their time on the map.
•   At the Niflheim Board we made it possible to exit the cave to complete the quest, while your party is in combat. However, all figurines in the party still need to be next to the cave exit.
•   At the Niflheim Board, we the moved relic to avoid friendly units spawning behind enemy spawn tile.
•   When taking water from Mimir’s well, a point of interest effect now spawn at the cave exit.
•   After reloading waypoints on The Lost Norse Battle board, too many units would spawn
•   Reduced the damage of the Bombers poison on The Lost Norse Battle Board
•   Updated some figurine names in the Chinese translation.

Hotfix Patch 1.1.2
•   Event Cards showing Ambush or The Alarm on The Rescue Battleboard now shows correctly
•   Crash problem happening on Alfablot on the two harder difficulties
•   Units could move through barriers which were intended to block movement
•   When using a controller; right stick rotation would stop working after entering the options menu.
•   After swapping items with the controller, an object would become non-selectable
•   Added graphics options when opening the options menu with the controller
•   Optimized fire effect causing performance problems

Hotfix for Patch 1.1.1
•   Fixed an issue causing Voice Over to not work in Chinese, this also caused multiple other issues, such as being unable to interact with objects.
•   Fixed an issue causing the deck builder to sometimes spawn an invalid card.
•   Trial of Tyr: Fixed an issue causing enemy figurines to not properly move.
•   Lost Norse (Balancing): Made boat spawn timer a few seconds longer
•   Lost Norse (Balancing): Significantly reduced Health and Defense on new "bomber" units.
•   Improved lighting on Tears of Eir and Lost Norse

For anyone playing with gamepads, we have made some major improvements regarding communication and controller setup. Please be aware that we are still working on the controller setup and are open for any feedback you might have. We have added a Gamepad feedback post in the forum.

Furthermore, we have made some minor adjustments to the achievements.
Two of our achievements, A Taste for Gold - Collect 1.000 gold and A Collection for Kings - Loot 1.000 items as we realize it was set to a way too high a threshold.

To fix this the three collect gold achievements will be changed from 1.000/10.000/100.000 to 100/1.000/10.000 and loot achievements from 10/100/1.000 to 1/10/100.

If some of you hard working Vikings have been struggling to achieve the 1000 items or 100.000 gold threshold and were getting close, please write us in the comments below and we will find a way to honor your efforts.

It has been a long time since our last patch update, and honestly too long. We have been porting Wartile to Consoles while simultaneously developing the upcoming expansion for Wartile, resulting in lots of new code to the game that had to be sorted out before releasing the hotfixes.

Anyway, here are some of the most critical changes in this update.

Patch notes 1.1.9.4

•   AI should no longer overstep and cancel players moves
•   Possible crash and lose of save game if pressing a certain key in a special menu removed
•   Significant optimization in overall performance
•   Shorter delay on throwing oil bombs
•   Menu shows correct difficulty mode
•   Updated localization
•   Fixed issues with some tokens duplicating
•   Fixed issue where Freyr’s Omen did not work
•   Units are now included in the score on Alphablot
•   Lowered crowsuicide from 2 to 0.5 sec
•   An important bug - glitch - allowing you to cheat! By pretending to change your resolution during combat it would refill your figurine's health when you returned from options.


Updated localization for French, German, Spanish and Italien

Gameplay changes:

•   Ymirs Cage now cost 6 battle points
•   Break Armor increased duration from 10 to 20 seconds lower cooldown from 40 to 30 sec.
•   ForceAttack damage increased from 30 to 50
•   Headbutt skill debuff increased from -10 to -20 and duration increased from 8 to 20 sec movement debuff increased from -1 to -2 Cooldown lowered from 45 to 35.
•   Immobilize duration increased from 15 to 20 seconds.
•   Shield Bash increased duration from 6 to 8 seconds, cooldown lowered from 45 to 35
•   Shield Push cooldown lowered from 30 to 25 seconds
•   Shield Wall cooldown reduced from 60 to 40 seconds
•   Taunt cooldown lowered from 45 to 30 seconds
•   Volva Crow suicided Stun duration increased from 6 to 10 sec cooldown reduced from 60 to 20 seconds
•   Volva rot curse duration increased to 60 sec cooldown reduced to from 35 sec to 30
•   Volva Swarm duration increased from 12 to 20 sec, cooldown reduced from 60 sec to 50 sec.
•   Warhorn duration increased from 15 to 25 sec.
•   Curse of old age Stun duration increased from 4 to 6 seconds
•   Curse of sloth cost increased from 3 to 5 battle points
•   Poison Jar cost lowered from 7 to 5 battle points
•   Pilgrims madness duration increased from 10 to 20

We made these significant changes to increase the impact of figurine abilities during battle.

Honestly, we did not know this existed before a few days ago.

Difficulty Tiers

The reputation tiers at the first battle board Trail of Death are set to 18/24/33 hopefully this will cover the various reputation stages that players might have. All tiers will be unlocked from the start allowing players to choose the reputation tier that fits them best. Jumping to a higher tier will unlock the items from the tiers below it.

The Vikings of Wartile continue to raid, now on the Nintendo Switch.

Our Wartile Vikings arrived on the US shores this week and to raid the Nintendo Switch, hopefully making quite a spectacle.

Our second fleet heading for the Nintendo Switch European regions got lost at sea, but they will hopefully find their bearings and arrive shortly.

As a small independent studio, shipping our first production Wartile to Steam, Xbox One, PS4, and now Nintendo Switch is an outstanding achievement. We hope it will help us continue to elaborate and grow the Wartile franchise.

All this is thanks to our fantastic community, who embraced and enjoyed Wartile despite being different and innovative toward strongly defined genres. For that, we are very grateful

Some time ago, we revealed that we are working on Successor, heavily inspired by Wartile, but with lots of new features and ways of doing things, for example a region map that you now can explore.

Hi everyone

We just want to use this opportunity to raise awareness about Successor, our new project made in the spirit of Wartile.

We would love to have our Wartile community give the Successor Alpha Demo a playtest and let us know what you think works well so far.

While the Demo is still missing lots of its core features and does not resemble the final product, your perspective helps us prioritize our further development.

The Playtest will be open most of the Weekend or until we have had enough feedback this time around.
