About

Buoyancy is a city-building strategy game set in an ocean world.

Build a floating city. Plan out your city's expansion by placing floating platforms that connect with each other. There are several types of buildings: Gatherers, Production, Hunters, Military, and Utility. Resources are delivered in real-time for constructing and production by your villagers.

Manage a growing population. Your city's population will be ever growing! Manage your villagers happiness and nourishment levels to keep them alive. Try to balance resource production with an increasing population that demands more and more. Combat sickness and fires that could cripple your city.

Explore with your mighty city. In this ocean world there are resources and floating junk to exploit but they’re not always going to drift your way. You can move your city around to exploit resources providing your buildings a production boost. Most of these resources are critical to develop larger cities, and some are necessary to keep surviving!
Find schools of fish, derelict ships, and take advantage of rebounded whale populations (or don’t).

Fight for your survival. Pirates will attack you if they spot your city. You can train Guards to defend your city from invaders. Place Junk Cannons to destroy a large amount of pirates in one blow, but be careful of friendly fire!

Devlog 25 – One Year on Steam!
August 30, 2020

Hey everyone, we have officially been on Steam for one year! The team would like to thank all our fans for the support and feedback we received. We made a short recap video highlighting features we have implemented since Day 1 of the Steam release.

https://youtu.be/4__Dgx63X9g

Caravan Textures
Elliott

Worked a bit on the Medical and Military caravan this month. I plan to focus the textures more on the clarity. With notably the tent on the Medical caravan, and the turret with the Military caravan. While the Military caravan needs more work I plan to experiment a little with the Medical caravan first. It should be noted since both the medical caravan and military caravan are work in progress its very likely to subject change.

Relics Management
Zomawia

Kinda old news by now since it was in the last update but I added the option to save Relics. Since most Relics give Happiness, among other benefits, the player can save them and use them when needed. I also added some other Relics that give city bonuses like Drills (temp increase rower thrust), Fish Nets (temp increase Fish production).

The next part of Relics will be a “RELIC_HUNTER” that can go through Junk to find Relics. Also want to mention Artifacts, special Relics that are strictly for lore and world building, giving clues to show how the current world came to be. Phase 3 of Relics will probably come after Upgrades and Tech tree stuff.

Graphical Improvements
Shawn

The new graphical improvements are almost done. I am working on optimizing the performance so it doesn’t bog down older GPUs as well as fixing bugs with the new shaders and rendering pipeline.

It was a long requested feature: Autosaves are different savefiles. Well there it is.

Building Upgrades
Zomawia

Still chugging along implementing building upgrades! Nothing really to show. =)

Devlog 27
October 30, 2020

Happy Halloween! Here’s the latest Devlog to show what we have been up to during October 2020.

Mill v2, Workshop assets
Elliott

Mill V2
The Mill redesign is a response to our new upgrade system for the buildings in-game. The original was also an asset that was made very early in development. So we figured to make the asset more compatible with the upgrade system and remove old art at the same time.

Devlog 28
Mon, 30 November 2020

Hey Buoyancies!

November's devlog is here for reading material. Check it out.

Texturing
Elliot

Shipyard
Sticking with a lot of the refining buildings this building mostly uses a metal design. But experiments with the design by being mostly constructed from the hull of a ship and less from the design of a constructed building from mostly scrap pieces

Hot Air Balloon (WIP)
A particularly noteworthy asset that only is seen when deployed by the city. I found it interesting to experiment with the torn mixed fabric design we tend to apply throughout our textures on this asset. While am more comfortable with the direction for the basket, I most likely will make changes to the fabric on the balloon

Wrecker Ship (WIP)
While I want to keep the frame more wooden I feel the plastic bulkiness on the front and sides makes the asset look a little silly. But I am in favor of a primarily green color pallet

Ships n’ chips
Kevin

This’ll probably be what I want to show for this Devlog

Graphical Update… Again…
Shawn

After the launch of our updated rendering we found that players using the Linux OS were unable to play the game. To remedy this, we had to upgrade our engine – now Linux players were able to once again enjoy Buoyancy… Weeeeeeell…. Turns out, the upgrade also changed a lot of how lighting and shaders worked; our textures were blinding, the scene lighting was not correct, and shaders broke leaving textures invisible in game. We had to fix as much as we could quickly so we didn’t blind the players from the sheer reflection of the sun from their cities. After the most problematic bugs were fixed, we began working on lesser issues and will continue to fix reported graphical bugs that may pop up as more players are able to find them.

Storage System changes
Zomawia

The Storage system was reworked. Building production doesn’t stop anymore if you reach maximum storage. Resources will now decay if their Storehouse is at capacity. Villagers can also die from falling crates at overcapacity Storehouses.

Watch out for falling Whale.

Various Requested Stuff
Zomawia

Buildings under construction can be paused and resumed

See what resources villagers are carrying. Use the overlay toggle button and enable it in Settings menu.

Stats Menu
Zomawia

Finished with the stats menu for now. Added a World panel and a calendar to it so you can see the current day and future holidays. I intend to put Biome, Seasons, and Weather information there when we get those systems running.

Devlog 30
January 31, 2021

Hello and Welcome back to the Buoyancy devlogs.

New Buildings assets
Elliott

Fuel Factory
While in the last Devlog I said I most likely will reduce the number of red hues in the texture. I found them very eye-catching and saw a lot of compromise with the other colors that the texture had with greens and yellows

Historian
I wanted to primarily focus on a wood-based texture, letting the unique building design take stage while not resembling something very industrial. It should be noted while not in the render the torches will be lit, and collected relics are placed on top of the podium

Artifacts. History, Lore, and the Artifact Room
Shawn

We have begun work on implementing the artifact system which encompasses all the history and lore aspects of our storytelling. Artifacts will be uncovered during playthroughs and store in the artifact room which will be accessed from the main menu and in-game. All artifacts in this room can be clicked on to get a closer view, rotate, and learn more information about the part of history it represents. There are also plans to include information about each belief but, for now, we are focused on the history. Here is the prototype for what we have.

Devlog 31
February 28, 2021

Hey everyone thanks for reading this devlog. We are still chugging along getting the new buildings done for the Beliefs system. The Beliefs system in-game is still under progress as well as the Artifacts and lore. Also we did a ton of bugfixes during February and the game seems pretty stable after playtesting a bunch.

Belief buildings assets
Kevin

Oil Rig Platform
Elliott

This asset, in particular, was more time-consuming than I initially thought. I found a struggle with finding a balance of the design by keeping most objects more traditional designed, while also applying more crude constructed buildings and textures. I applied this thought process because I wanted some of the buildings to appear as if they been simply damaged and worn by time and use, while others are constructed by the people residing there. I can see improvements could be made by applying more objects like creates or tables to apply a more living abode to who lives here. But overall I find the shape and organized chaos with the textures to work nicely with the platform and fit well into the game.

Recycling Pool
Elliott

While this asset is labeled WIP It most likely won’t be seeing many changes since the color scheme is almost identical to the concept, I still will play around with adding more detail and cohesion to the texture

Lore
Shawn

Most artifacts history’s are in the pre-writing stage, many are outlined, and three have their narrative drafted. Hopefully we’ll have most drafted and/or being revised by the next Devlog.

Belief System
Zomawia

Been working on the beliefs system intermittently between bug fixing phases. The UI for selecting new techs is working as is the Belief selector panel. I decided not to a do a tech tree but make the whole tech system open, kind of how building availability and upgrades are.

You earn tech points in-game to unlock the belief techs. Each Belief earn points during gameplay differently though some may overlap. Examples: destroying a city, hitting a population goal, crash into a trading post.

Devlog 32
March 31, 2021

Hey everyone. Thanks for reading March Devlog. This is sort of a repeat from last month since we are still working the Beliefs and techs. All the new buildings have been modeled and are awaiting textures and other optimizations.

Shrine, and other assets

Kevin

new buildings in the works

Artifacts

Shawn

Rough drafts for all the lore for each artifact is complete. I will begin revising the drafts and expanding the lore where I need to and Elliott has begun modeling the artifacts.

Belief building texturing

Elliott

Arena
For the Arena, I was worried the overuse of the wood paneling textures would make it very bland and hard to identify. I believe I found a good use with the metallic paneling parts and the blue tarps flanking each side to help the asset stand out with its unique design.

Arena

Recycling Pool
As posted from my last Devlog this asset was mostly completed and primarily needed a little touch up to be game-ready. While not a very big building I saw the It stands out fine with the green liquid inside the vat and in the tub

Recyling Pool

Oil Platform node and cities
Zomawia

Integrated the new oil rig platform to resource nodes (similar to Sunken tankers for oil, scrap metal). Also created some new cities that utilize the oil rigs. Since the oil platform navigable areas are way higher than the players platform I had to revamp our code to accept different height differences, also with animation changes (climb, jump down). This could be used for other future structures like mega faction cities, iceberg cities, etc.

Belief buildings wip

Zomawia

Worked on things relating to the beliefs. Most of these new buildings were ideas from the fans. Here are the descriptions and usage:

Historian – Processes Junk in an attempt to find educational materials. Villagers can use them to reduce their Cousin rating over time.

Shrine – Processes Junk in an attempt to create offerings. Villagers can use offerings to worship here and increase Happiness over time. Intended to replace Brewery as primary Happiness source.

Smokeshop – Processes Grains, Crude Oil, and Seaweed to create Smokes. Villagers can smoke the Smokes here to increase Cousin rating over time.

Arena – A large building that Villagers can spar in. Sparring villagers gain Happiness over time while also increasing Hunger. Intended to replace Brewery as primary Happiness source.

Soup Kitchen – Processes Flour, Seaweed, and Water to create soup. Villagers can eat here to regain stats over time. Intended to replace Galley as primary Food consumption.

Recycling Pool – Corpses are deposited here and turned into a nutritional sludge. Villagers can eat here to regain stats over time. Intended to replace Galley as primary Food consumption.

Some higher tiered buildings will be also be locked until a Belief is selected.

Devlog 39
October 31, 2021

Hey everyone. Happy Halloween! Thanks for checking out our latest Devlog. Alpha 4 was pushed out this past month with the Beliefs and Techs system being highlight of the update. What’s next? We will be working on the Biomes and Artifacts update.

New Storehouse, Artifacts texturing
Elliott

Storehouse_v2
While the back view cant be seen compared to the last devlog. I should note that I didn’t make many noticeable changes to that side. I feel the shape of this structure to be pretty noticeable for its large doors and noticeable ring of direction arrows that wrap around the structure. I found the mix of wooden texturing for one building roofing, and metal for the other. Helps distinguish while also complementing each other with their distinct designs.

Devlog 43
April 4, 2022

Hey everyone! Our latest devlog covers more of our Alpha 5 progress. The Artifact Room is almost done and we have more asset work on the Biomes update.

For this month I constructed an artifact room. We wanted an area where you can inspect the items acquired in-game. The room needed to be large to accommodate all of the artifacts. Also giving the player a goal by seeing all the empty tables.

The artifact room’s assets have been created and placed inside the scene.
This is where players will find out more about the artifacts they find and the world of Buoyancy.
