Development and roadmap update

Environment optimizations

Hey guys, as you know we've been doing steady progress and are currently working on several fixes for our next update. The idea is to have an optimized game with all (or most) crash-related bugs and performance issues you have been reporting

As of now, we have improved scenarios, so you will be able to enjoy beautiful views of your kingdom with our next update:

Basically, you will have an improved FPS & overall performance, the game, in general, will take considerably less virtual memory, and there will be added details like the grass interacting with your character as he walks through it.

If you want to check out our development plans, we have developed this Roadmap: http://www.larkonstudio.com/RoadMap.jpg

Major Update #2 and Beta Dev Progress
25 JANUARY   - LARKON STUDIO

You will now be able to take your army inside for a dungeon raid!

Development Progress:

Dear community, we have been reviewing all of your feedback through the Steam discussions, reviews, and our Discord server. We wanted to take the time to tell you a little more about our development schedule, and why we decided to work on the optimizations that we have instead of building upon new features for this update.

We read every single one of your reviews, comments, feedback, suggestions, and even rants, furthermore we also take action based on them. Some of you are having critical issues with game crashes, bugs, and slow performance with the game, so instead of adding more cool stuff into it, we thought it would be best to first polish what we have built until now.

This is also why next week we will finally open our Beta for which some of you have been registered to (In case you haven't and wish to join, write us here or DM via the Steam profile).

The beta version will include the following:
1: reduced usage of virtual memory, which is the main cause of the game crashes as well as the player appearing under the ground bug.
2: new and a better-optimized weather system which increases FPS as well.
3: Some new and better-performing camera effects.
4: New and much less CPU consuming pathfinder system.
5: New army formations in RTS mode, the soldiers will now follow you on formation when possible, and will gather near you in tight places.
6: Soldiers in your army will now go with you inside dungeons.

Within the Beta, you will test all these features, and we will prepare for our second major update this February 15, which will include:

1: All the above + further FPS increase as well as a new and better-performing environment system.
2: A fixed citizens algorithm, correcting misc. bugs that make them act unpredictably (and in some cases, in a funny/buggy way).
3: Groups in RTS mode, you will be able to select soldiers and add them to groups and command groups using hotkeys.
4: Better combat AI, NPCs will avoid the circle of fire and others dangers, and they will be more aggressive and smarter when in combat mode.

Basically, with your help, we will have a much better-performing game, which will then help us build tons of new features that you have all been asking.

A short debrief of what to expect after the 15\2 version:

A week or 2 after, we will finally release new quests and maps, followed by implementing a full RPG Leveling system, a sphere of Influence with the world map(by April), the Market, Destructible walls and finally, a multiplayer experience (by Summer). For more details please check our Development Road Map[www.larkonstudio.com]

If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please let us know through a Steam review, your review helps us a lot and are we deeply appreciate your opinion.

See you in Ellaria,

Larkon Studio

Dear Community,

The Beta version of "Major Update 2 - Optimizations" is live!

We've sent a message to the volunteers who contacted us about the beta testing directly.

Please contact us if you volunteered and didn't get the message or if you want to participate in the beta testing.

What’s new in 0.5.39.4 BETA 2:

•   Improved 20% of the texture and memory usage. Much more to come.
•   Fixed an issue where the terrain would be flat or have flat portions
•   Improved the camera’s processing and post effects, and its performance
•   Completely rebuild the Pathfinder system; NPC goes smoother and smarter from place to place.
•   Completely rebuild the follower system; Followers move in an organized formation when possible, and stick with their leader in tight places

8 FEBRUARY   - LARKON STUDIO

Legends of Ellaria players & testers:

We have updated the beta version currently available to all LoE owners by requesting access through our Discord server:
or via Steam messaging

Your feedback until now has been tremendous during this phase, so we decided to keep adding to it and improve it a bit further before our major update release on the 15th of February.

Here's what's new:
• Most things in the game are now affected by rain and wetness
• When Pressing "New Game" and then pressing the Escape button, the game doesn't start a new game
• Fixed multiple issues with save / load. Saving and loading should work now, but we advise to keep a backup of a stable version load

Known issues:
• The weather does not show properly after load. The moon may be visible during daylight and the sun light is dimmer
• The night time flashlight may not work after loading a game

Things to test:
• Load your old save
• Save frequently and try loading whenever possible

Please report any bugs that you find when loading and saving, and any bug in general after a long gameplay.

Dear Community,

We're excited to announce that our second major update: part 1 is now LIVE

As many of you know, we opened a beta for LoE owners and the feedback has been amazing. Thanks to you, many fixes and improvements were possible.

Version 0.5.39.05 includes the following:

Completely overhauled the construction:
•   When placing a building: Buildings check if they can be constructed by their shape and not by general distance from other buildings
•   When placing a building: Buildings cannot be built inside a mountain or close to a cliff - which removes bugs related to doors inside mountains or buildings in the air
•   When constructing a new building, the terrain gets flat exactly where it should, and not as a general circle around the building.
•   Buildings snap to the terrain by their entrance and not by their center. The front entrance is always linked to the terrain smoothly
•   To compensate for the new system, old saves will try to snap the buildings into a more manageable position. If you encounter any problem with old saves, please send us your save files and we will fix it.

Completely Overhauled the Weather and Sky:
•   Included a new cloud system that looks more natural and full
•   Improved the weather and sky performance
•   Rain is more epic, and storms are darker at night
•   Night time lighting and sky is prettier.

Improved Some Graphics:
•   Included a new grass system which looks better and has touch - bending
•   Improved some of the terrain textures
•   Some objects in the game react to rain and wetness. More to come
•   Improved 25% of the texture and memory usage. Much more to come.
•   Improved Camera effects and general game atmosphere. More to come
•   Temporarily removed VSync. VSync will be added to the options menu in later versions

Made General Fixes and improvements:
•   When Pressing "New Game" and then pressing the Escape button, the game doesn't start a new game
•   When falling through the ground or from the edge of the world, your character will be returned to a normal position
•   Fixed an issue where the terrain would be flat or have flat portions

Improved AI:
•   Enemies try to avoid the Circle of Fire spell whenever possible
•   Completely rebuild the Pathfinder system; NPC goes smoother and smarter from place to place.
•   Improved Followers and RTS Commands:
•   Followers can now follow you indoors. When you enter a dungeon, 3 of your best soldiers will go in with you.
•   Followers won’t wander too far from you unless instructed to. When in combat, followers will disengage and return to you in a tactical way if you are too far from them.
•   Also, when pressing the “Follow” command during combat, soldiers will immediately disengage and retreat towards you
•   Soldiers react to Attack, Move and Follow commands even when in combat mode

Of course, since it's Early Access, there are some known issues:
•   Followers may get stuck in dungeon, they will teleport to you eventually
•   Sime civils still may act funny
•   Some bug causing some creatures to not equip weapons(rare)
•   Many systems were renewed or changed. Please press F8 and send us a bug report for any issue you encounter

On part 2 & 3 we will be working on further fixes, optimizations, and the implementation of some features like:

Fixing the above Known issues
•   Continue to optimize the game - Memory usage reduction
•   Improve the graphics
•   Create Combat Formations
•   Vastly improve Character movement
•   New Construction(optional)
•   New maps and quests

Major Update part 2 will be released on March 3, 2018, so there will be many changes inside Ellaria in the upcoming weeks & months.

As always, let us know your opinion through a Steam review, by opening a steam discussion, or by chatting with us directly through our Discord Server

Please contact us if you want to participate in further beta testing

See you in Ellaria,

Dear community,

Thank you for your support on our most recent Major Update, we have taken your new feedback and considerations to improve and add the following:

Version 0.5.39.16 changes:
•   Integrated a new engine for displaying plants and trees, with better performance and view
•   You can now place buildings over trees and in forests
•   Added more trees and plants to the outdoors. The number of trees is affected by the quality settings
•   Buildings now remove the grass and plants around them when built
•   Tweaked the lighting and shadows for a better performance and looks
•   Tweaked the level of detail vs. the performance. Large cities require 70% less GPU
•   Fixed issues where FPS would drop when near the goblin village
•   Optimized LoE's game engine. CPU cost is reduced by 60% when in a large city and/or with a large army
•   Optimized LoE's pathfinding engine to run smoother and faster
•   FPS on Indoors and large indoor maps have been doubled
•   Fixed issues with the minimap not appearing or appearing after a few seconds when moving between places
•   Fixed citizens holding the wrong tools while working
•   Fixed main menu lighting when returning to the main menu for the second time
•   Placed the EA disclaimer text to the main menu since loading the game is too fast to read it

We have begun working on our RPG system and our 'Sphere of Influence', as well as some new graphics overhauling that together will considerably increase gameplay time and the general aesthetics of Legends of Ellaria.

Because of the complexity of these new features, new updates will take longer to publish, but we will still do bug-fixes and optimizations to keep the progress while these release.

Our next update(Mid April) will include First Person View, all path finding fixes, as well as more optimizations and small features.

If you have any ideas that you would like to see in Ellaria, please let us know through our Discussions, comments, Steam Reviews or our Discord, in which we do Dev talks every now and then to directly hear your thoughts in a friendly chat :)

Thank you for supporting us in building a whole new world, we will keep working tirelessly to bring you an epic game.

Sincerely,

The Larkon Studio Team

New updates coming!

First person mode is coming!

Dear community,

We wanted to update you on recent progress with Legends of Ellaria. As you know, we have been slowing updates down to work on bigger features such as the RPG system and the Sphere of influence.

We are now building this for the game and as of now we have progressed on the following fixes and features:

1. There's a new visual editor for the RPG system, which will allow us to define classes, attributes, and skills in the upcoming RPG update.

2. The RPG system is expected to have a proficiency-based leveling system, where you'll invest proficiency points for each level you gain. Proficiencies (Warrior, Ranger, Mage, Diplomat, and more) will boost your abilities in said proficiency and will give you the ability to unlock Talents. These talents (Whirlwind, City Manager, Swordsman, and more) will improve your stats and may unlock skills to use during combat.

3. We are almost done with the First Person view mechanism. You will now be able to switch between first and third person mode by pressing “F”(or rebinding it to your preferred key). There are some camera differences between first and third person view, where going sideways makes the player face the desired direction, while in first person it will always face in the direction that the camera is facing.

4. In addition, we are working on IK (Inverse Kinematic) allowing the players and other NPC’s act much more flexible and accurate to the terrain and environment they're in.
Our next Major Update Part 1 will include First Person view, IK, “WASD” keybindings and more :)

While the initial RPG system will be available in the beta stage, it will be fully released and improved on as a Major Update part 2, date still pending.

In order to sign into the beta, please join our discord server and PM us with your steam profile, we would love to have as many of you join us in developing the game together.

For all of you that have left reviews, thank you so much. For those that haven't, please do, we read every single one of them and work from your feedback to improve the game.

See you in Ellaria,

Larkon Studio

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

We have a very special announcement for this upcoming winter.

After building the foundation of Legends of Ellaria's essential features, were ready take a step further and bring YOU a step further into the experience.

When we first envisioned LoE, we thought about a truly unique game that we as developers & gamers would love to play. As we thought and scrambled through ideas, mixing an Adventure-RPG with an RTS game in one gave the concept so many capabilities in which you could not only explore a world but build a kingdom within it; This also gave us ideas of, what if you could be more than an adventurer in the game, what if you could be king?

And so, the idea of a world where you could explore, build, command, fight, trade, and rule all-in-one game became what is today an Early Access version of Legends of Ellaria.

Our latest version includes the long-awaited merchant and new elements in our RPG and leveling system, such as the Warrior and Shieldsman classes. We will continue updating LoE on a weekly basis and expect the World Domination version to come out soon

Upcoming Features Showcase - Siege, Horses, and more
21 Mar - Larkon Studio

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

Since we’re working on a larger version than usual, we’ve made some videos to share with you about our progress and upcoming versions.

The past few weeks have been exciting as we’ve laid important foundations for the World Domination Update. Since the World Domination will contain multiple areas, we’ve tweaked the pathfinding so that Ellarian citizens and NPC’s will find their way between cities. They can also enter and exit buildings, and have a more realistic daily schedule. For instance, citizens now work during the day and stay indoors during the night. Also, they change clothes before going to work.

One good reason why citizens need to exit buildings is that you and your enemies can destroy buildings.

When a building gets below 40% health, all of its inhabitants are forcefully removed and the building is inaccessible. Also, most buildings can be completely destroyed.

Along with destructible buildings, we’ve created siege weapons in preparation for faction wars and castle sieges.

Siege weapons require several soldiers to operate, and are slow to deploy, but wreak havoc on large creatures and defense structures.

Since we’re designing a large world for the upcoming World Domination update, we’ve also created horses, horse carriages, and the ability to fight on a horse.

The next weeks will be exciting as we’ll publish these features and more. We’re also working on the first parts of the World Domination update, and will post updates, images, and videos.

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

This week we've connected the first parts of the World Domination version.

We've also managed to connect the first person view to the world domination view so that when entering a new area, the terrain and its surroundings will be exactly as displayed in the world map. Along with that, we're working on multiple areas within each tile, to represent points of interest and quests.

We're also working on cities, fog of war and connected areas, as well as a road between towns. We can't wait to publish new videos and images as we develop them.

In the meanwhile, we are on our way to publish a large version, which will include siege weapons, destructible buildings, and more in-depth city life. We're expecting to publish this version within the next week or two

City and Path Finding Progress Report
23 May @ 2:23pm - Larkon Studio

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

This week we've connected our new Path Finding and Civilian logics to Legends of Ellaria.

This new system allows people to enter and exit houses, own property, work during specific hours, and travel to different cities. NPC's will be able to exit their home, walk outside of the town, and to an establishment of another town in another region of the world.

We've also improved the Path Finding part of the game, which is the ability of NPC's to find their way through obstacles. This new system works faster and is more accurate.

We are continuing with the development of fog of war, connecting roads between towns and the first version of World Domination. We can't wait to publish new videos and images as we develop these features.

In the meanwhile, we are almost ready for the first Closed Beta versions of siege weapons, destructible buildings, and more in-depth city life.

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

This week we've made progress in the visual aspects of the upcoming World Domination.

Our new graphics take into account small to large towns, bridges, rivers, unique locations, and more. These new graphics are the first step towards combining our game code with the actual look of the world view, which will change depending on your in-game actions

We've also improved the rendering and look of our characters. The new graphics use new translucency, skin tones, and more details. We're also working on new sets of medium armor, which will add a stop gap between the heavy armor and the leather armor.

For these purposes, we've added new designers and coders into our team, so that we'll finish the World Domination faster and better than planned.

We've also finished most of the siege weapons, destructible buildings, and a more in-depth city life version. We're now connecting these parts to the new World Domination version as we're preparing a new Closed-Beta.

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

The world concept will send you on quests find treasures or scrolls, which will benefit you and your kingdom.

When not in adventure, you can construct buildings and tie them to your cities

Your kingdom is expanded with influence. To increase your influence, you'll need to build forts, which will send patrols and reduce crime.

Through the map, you'll find dark areas, full of undead creatures. These areas will expand their influence and corrupt the land until you clear their enemies or increase your influence.

Whenever you gain influence, you can build mines or lumber mills, and gain resources. The more resources you have, the more you can construct.

Each part of the map is made of a HEX area, which can be interacted with. If you control that particular area, you can build towns, mines, trading posts, forts, bridges, guilds and many other things that will expand your kingdom. you can also visit these areas in the first-person mode once they're built

Progress Report - August

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

This week we've designed many of the visuals and lore related aspects of the ancient ruins of Ellaria.

We've designed multiple custom-made models to fit our lore and the items you will find in these ancient ruins

The ancients are a lost civilization who mastered technology through magic instead of machinery

Ages ago, these ancients created portals between Ellaria and other worlds. The ancients explored these worlds and collected vast knowledge and various items. One of these abandoned portals was used to transfer you and your kingdom to Ellaria

Now, these ancient ruins contain scrolls which you can use for research, as well as unique items and resources.

We're also planning to add portals that will be unlocked after visiting these ruins, which will link together different parts of your kingdom.

Our next task is the link between the world map and indoors, which will bring us closer than ever to our first major beta update. We hope that this update will be as soon as next month

Progress Report - September
Wed, 11 September 2019

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

This week we've polished many of the visuals and logics of Legends of Ellaria. These changes include indoor and outdoor environments of ancient dungeons, world map textures, and world map objects and creatures

Also, we're near the end of significant game optimizations. These optimizations will help Legends of Ellaria run faster, consume less memory, and support older hardware.

At the moment, we're focusing on connecting and testing the different parts that our team developed. Some of these parts include map loadings and player movement in the world.

Our next task is to finish the logics for multiple cities, conquering areas, quests, and the kingdom economy. With that in mind, we are getting closer to the next major update. Our next closed beta is expected at around October - November, and we expect the first Early Access update at around December.

Meanwhile, we visited GamesCom 2019 and met with interesting people. We received very positive feedback about Legends of Ellaria's concept and the upcoming features. We can't wait to finish the next Major Update.

Progress Report -October

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

As we're nearing the Beta release, we've made progress on Legends of Ellaria's logics. Among our achievements is the army movement, battles, sphere of influence, as well of huge optimizations on memory and CPU.

We would like to share with you some of the new World Management and Sphere of Influence logics.

Sphere of Influence

Any owned town, fort, or strategical building generates influence. This influence is transferred to other territories until it dissipates. having influence on a terrain tile will automatically "own" it, which gives you kingdom bonuses and allows you to build buildings on it.

The influence dissipates depending on the terrain type and connected roads. For instance, a flat terrain with roads will only lose one influence point, while a mountain will lose four influence points.

Army Movement

The army movement speed depends on the terrain's influence points, terrain type, roads, and the size of the army. For instance, a large army would move much slower than a regular army and would move even slower on enemy territory, giving a significant advantage to the defender.

Also, you cannot go past an enemy army or a fort. When moving one tile away from an enemy, you would have to either attack the enemy, retire to where you came from, or stay put and prepare a defense.

Since armies cannot go past forts or other armies, you can defend your kingdom by building "super defenses" on strategic locations, such as mountain passes and river crossings.

Places of interest

Each location, represented by HEX tiles, may contain one or several places of interest. These places may be towns, taverns, ruins, and camps. For instance, a location may contain an owned farm, your army camp, and a special quest location.

Hovering and clicking on a location will cause your player to fast travel to that location.

Battles

When you "walk" towards a defended location, you will start a battle, which will end once one of the sides is defeated or have retreated. The outcome of the battle depends on the hero, size of the army, and location. Each battle may last from a few in-game hours to several days and will involve multiple skirmishes.

You can choose to auto-resolve the battle by staying in the map view and wait for the outcome or to switch to First Person / RTS mode and command the battle by yourself.

If you win a battle, the remaining enemy armies will retreat to another location, while you will occupy and capture the battle location, along with all of its structures.

Along with these logics, we're working on the rest of the kingdom management, quests, a new city build menu, and army management. With that in mind, We are close to finishing the World Domination version, and we estimate that we'll publish the Closed Beta in November.

Progress Report - January
Thu, 30 January 2020

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

Based on Closed Beta feedbacks, we've completed many tasks during this month. We're nearly finished the next stable Closed Beta version.

We've also made progress in multiple features and locations both for the world map and game mechanics, and we're expecting the official Early Access version to be ready within weeks.

Along with game mechanics, we've made it possible to conduct large battles in First Person mode.

We have tested as many as 50 soldiers in the field, and we're hoping to raise this number to hundreds. The battle consists of waves of attackers and defenders until one of the sides runs out of soldiers or retreats.

A battle is connected to the world view, so you can either resolve the battle by waiting for it to conclude, or by entering First Person and fight by yourself. We've also ensured that if the attacker has less strength than the defender, the attacker will have penalties and will have fewer soldiers in the field.

You can command your soldiers through RTS (Real-Time Strategy) menu, or through Attack / Defend / Follow quick commands from the first person. If you have enough soldiers and don't need to strategize, you can just rush forward with your soldiers set to follow you. You'll be constantly surrounded by your own soldiers as they get reinforcements.

We've also made new places of interest, armies, places with fixed bonus and places that you can build. We've also added one-time events, that disappear once you clear them.

We're still working on more concepts and places of interest, and we're excited about the results. We've created several times more exploration, locations, and logics than the legacy version.

As we're finishing more milestones, we're closer to a stable Early Access than ever. We'd prefer not to post an official date yet, but based on our expectations, the Early Access version may be ready as soon as within two weeks.

Optimizations And Tweaks Update
Sun, 29 March 2020

Dear Legends of Ellaria players,

In the past few weeks, we've made important optimizations to our game engine, as well as tweaks and fixes from discussions and bug reports.

These changes are a part of a long-awaited expansion of our gameplay engine, which will allow us to integrate the new quest systems and remaining features.

The first thing we focused on was to reduce texture and memory size. For that end, we've implemented a new system that loads textures in memory depending on where you are.

Another thing we've fixed is the pathfinding and movement logics. The citizens were colliding with some objects on their way to places, and enemies were jumping on top of each other when fighting in large formations. We've fixed these issues and also fixed followers and movement issues in small spaces.

As a bonus, we've also improved the combat animations and tweaked some elements of the combat, both for small and large battles.

In addition, we've changed much of our sky rendering, which improved the speed and also shows better clouds and skies.

Its been a busy month, as we went over multiple areas of LoE and reduced multiple overloads that were causing sudden frame rate drops, such as in combat or in cities. We also collected bug reports and fixed multiple bugs in management, logics, graphics and more. We'll continue to improve LoE as we go. Thank you for your help and for all the bug reports!

Version 0.6.17.01 Contains

Optimizations

•   Reduced required RAM and Texture memory by 50% - 80%
•   Improved Outdoor Framerate +30%
•   Improved RTS Framerate x2
•   Improved large battle Framerate x2
•   Improved NPC generation speed x2
•   Removed multiple sudden framerate drops

Tweaks and overhauls

•   Improved combat animations and combo sequences
•   Improved combat AI
•   overhauled pathfinding, followers and combat movement
•   overhauled sky rendering and looks
•   Moved the RTS build menu to the left

Fixes

•   "Not enough resources" was not appearing in the world view when trying to buy a building
•   Market and other structures were not visible after build
•   crystals in caves were blinking
•   Fixed multiple issues where canceling a building doesn't return the resources
•   Fixed multiple issues with Boar, Cave crawler and NPC animations
•   Fixed multiple pathfinding issues
•   Fixed some rain and wetness issues

Good day everyone!

It’s been a while since our last announcement, so first of all, we want to send our best wishes to you and your loved ones in these challenging times. We hope you are doing as good as possible under the circumstances. Stay safe, stay strong – we’ll get through this together!

That said, we’ve got great news to share. Although the coronavirus crisis has shaken our world as much as everyone’s, we are a small team, and thankfully we could adapt quickly to remote working. Thus, our development hasn’t been too badly affected by this situation… and we are ready to announce that our game is in the last leg of its development. After several years in Early Access, Legends of Ellaria will launch its full release version in middle Q3!

This announcement comes with a warning, though. As we explained in the Early Access FAQ, our plan was always to increase the price of the game as the game grew. Now that we’re close to full release, that time has come: the game is now bigger and better in every sense that when we launched in Early Access. Starting on May 7th, the price will be increased to 24.99$.

This is also a way to thank our Early Access supporters that have got us this far, so those who believed in us since the beginning end up paying less as a token of appreciation for their trust. You still have a few days with the Early Access price, though, so if you were on the fence on buying Legends of Ellaria, go jump at it now before the increase!

In the coming days and weeks, we will share more information about the full version of the game and its release. If you want to stay up to date, hit the Follow button, and Wishlist the game.

See you in Ellaria, adventurers!

Introducing the Studio

Good day, Ellarians!

It’s been some time since we started this journey together: Legends of Ellaria was released in Early Access almost 3 years ago, and in this time, the game has grown and evolved a lot. Before anything else, we want to thank you for your continued support.

As we announced a few days ago, we are slowly approaching full release, and we wouldn’t have made it this far without you. That’s why today, we want to start a series of weekly dev blogs: as a way to reach out and open our doors to you. We want to highlight some new features we’re working in, but not only that —also to explain some major creative decisions we made in the past, or the main challenges we’re facing now, as a way to give you some insight on such a complex (but fascinating) work as games development.

But before we go into that, we want to introduce ourselves a little bit, so we get to know each other. Larkon Studio, the team behind Legends of Ellaria, is a small indie studio founded by two friends, Arik Helman and Adrian Tache. We had been working together for some years for an art design company, and one day we decided to pursue our own dream. We are around 40 years old, with families and kids, so you can imagine that making that jump was a bit scary. We cut our teeth in Larkon Studios developing games and apps for third parties – but always dreaming of starting our own game and bringing some of these ideas to the design table. Ideas that, over the years, became the first game design document of Legends of Ellaria.

Our interests in games were very varied: Arik loves shooters, RPG and some grand strategy games, while Adrian is more focused in RPG, RTS and 4X Games. We decided that we didn’t need to renounce any of these influences: maybe we could find a way to put everything together in a melting pot, creating a game that defied classifications by genre. A game that brings together different mechanics in a unique gameplay experience, mixing roleplaying games with real-time strategy. That is how the concept of Legends of Ellaria came to be – and we are convinced that that was also what made the difference in the successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed us to start this project.

Reached that point, Early Access felt like the natural way to go for us. We were making three games in one, so to speak – a challenge that we knew would be easier with a community by our side that would support us and give us invaluable feedback. More than ever after the experience in Kickstarter, we just knew that this was a road we couldn’t walk alone. And time has proven us right: our great community’s feedback has shaped and changed the game mechanics so much that Legends of Ellaria is now not only different but better. We also want to thank all the people that have worked with us over the years: our producer Lisa, our graphics designers Jamie and Ronny, interns from QA and art schools, voice actors, freelance game designers… You are all a part of Ellaria now!

That’s all for today; in next week’s blog, we want to introduce you to the fantasy world of Ellaria and how it was conceived.

See you next week!

Introducing Ellaria
Thu, May 14, 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

We’re one week closer to the full release of Legends of Ellaria, and after introducing the team who made the game in last week’s blog, today we want to introduce you to Ellaria itself – that is, the world where the whole games take place. Ellaria shares a lot of common traits with other high fantasy settings: it’s a place inhabited by creatures of very, very different humanoid species, where magic and the supernatural play an important role. A land full of mysteries and terrible dangers, but also of glory to be found for the brave adventurer.

Ellaria is at a crossroad of a sort – a junction between worlds where you can hop across dimensions to different worlds. A long, long time ago, a forgotten civilization, as ancient as they were powerful, built portals to a myriad of other worlds. They disappeared, no one knows why – but they left their Golems behind to guard their portals and sacred locations.

Your character came to Ellaria after crossing one of these portals, fleeing from conflict in Mara, your own world. Mara was a thriving world where proud lords ruled over vast kingdoms. Their awe-inspiring powers were built upon the Riftstone, a material with strange magical properties. But these lords fought each other constantly to control the Riftstone, and their strife escalated so much that it became a worldwide conflict that spanned hundreds of years, until the powerful forces that they unleashed transformed Mara into a desolated wasteland. You found one of the portals of the Ancient and crossed it to Ellaria, along with your people, escaping from the total destruction of your world.

In this new world, you became ruler of your own faction – but just like you, many other races and factions fled their homelands and came to Ellaria. The goblins, who live in large packs and favor ranged weapons because their weak bodies can’t stand up a human in a square fight. The northerners, ruling the land from their strongholds, who despise magic because they fear it as a curse. The remnants of the Amerdan clan, bandits and outcasts now, roaming the land searching for their fortunes. The mysterious Golems, ever silent, ever waiting for their masters to come back. And who knows what other strange faces you can find in the isolated regions of a place such as Ellaria…

In Ellaria, there are no established religions as such; magic is at the center of spirituality in this world. Most people think that magic is a power to be harnessed, but some others, like the Northerners, consider it a curse that can only lead to war and death (just like happened in your world, actually). Magic is approached in many different ways depending on every culture; in a nutshell, there are several different schools of magic that come from different understandings of its spiritual nature.

This is just an outline; there are of course many details, plots and surprises in Ellaria… but we don’t want to spoil the whole thing, you’ll have to play it for yourself to find out! This setting was initially created by Adrian, although the feedback from the community helped to give it shape and details. And even if Adrian acted as the lead writer in the world-building stage and creating the main storyline, he’s now working with Arik and the rest of the team in writing and implementing the main and side quests.

The inspiration for Ellaria came from an old fantasy book that Adrian read years ago: it was about a world that became a wasteland because of the excessive use of magic. In that world, magic was not exactly something mystical and otherworldly, but a way of life – something that may consume resources, but that you use in your daily life. Adrian found that concept interesting, and it’s been lurking in his mind for years… but funny enough, he can’t remember the actual name of the book now! If it rings a bell for you, let us know in the comments!

In the coming weeks, we want to focus on some of the new features that will be implemented in the full version of the game: what they bring to the experience, how they will work, how they were designed and created…
For a start, next week we’ll discuss how kingdom management will work.

See you next week!

Kingdom Management
Thu, 21 May 2020

Good day Ellarians!

As you know, our goal with Legends of Ellaria was always to create a game that blended different genres together, taking some features and mechanics from real-time strategy, first-person RPGs… In order to channel these features into a coherent experience, we decided that the game needed to operate in two levels: in one as a hero, in another as a king. That is: in some parts you would be controlling your character in their adventures; in the second, you would have to manage your own kingdom.

That, however, faced us with one of the main challenges of the development of Legends of Ellaria: finding a good balance between the first-person and the kingdom management view. With “balance” here we mean a lot of things – in terms of pacing, we needed both to feel equally fun and exciting. Both systems needed to feel equally meaningful and useful, too, so there is no “optimal path” and you could freely choose how to play depending only on your playstyle and mood. Also, they needed to feel connected: since you can perform different tasks (quests, attacking enemies or building something) both on the world view and in first-person, and you can jump from one view to the other, transitioning between both modes needed to feel natural.

We approached this by balancing carefully the different pros and cons to every option, so as the player would never have an obvious choice. You will choose how to approach everything depending on every playthrough and every situation. For instance, let’s say you are roaming the world with your army and you cross swords with other war party. You can direct the battle strategically from the world map, waiting for it to resolve automatically, or join the fray in first-person to lead your men yourself. The second option is a bit harder and potentially more dangerous, but it can also tip the scales if the battle is undecided – after all, as a hero you are a force to be reckoned with! Another example is construction: you can build everything in the world view, and the city council will decide where to place your new building; or you can walk into the city and place it yourself. The second option is slower and maybe less practical – but on the other hand you can design your city exactly as you want.

Some more examples: you can gather resources both by using different specialized buildings or thanks to the loot you get during your first-person adventures. But you don’t have to go yourself to every quest – you can assign them to your heroes, managing the whole affair from the world view. Your buildings allow you to grow your population and hire more soldiers, which in turn you can form armies with and lead into battle to attack other kingdoms or defend yours. Your kingdom gain bonuses when you capture certain special buildings and expanding your borders by strengthening your sphere of influence. Even your royal advisor has a two-sided nature: the dialog menu that advise you in the world view is literal character that you can meet in the first-person view!

To cut a long story short, it took a lot of iteration and fine-tuning, but we’re satisfied with the final results: in Legends of Ellaria you have to be both a hero and a king, and both things feel equally engaging and satisfying. As you can see, this interaction between the first-person and world-view systems create a game loop that keeps you moving you from one mode to another. However, we’re still halfway there with kingdom management, and some of the systems we have mentioned won’t be ready until the full version of the game (which will release soon!). At the moment, you can build towns, buildings and complexes, manage and expand your kingdom and attack or defend fortified positions. You can also explore, fight and gather resources in first person mode, but you can’t assign quests to your heroes yet.

In the full game, you will be able to unlock new buildings and types of troops through research. Quests will also be much more important, as their outcome may influence your kingdom as a whole; and you will be able to assign them to a party of your heroes (or go in yourself for a greater reward… and a hardest challenge). We are in the implementation stage of the quests: the custom-made quest engine works since a few versions ago, but we’re improving it so it works with multiple locations and different heroes; the quests are all written and designed, the code is ready for the most part. In the main story, you will start with a small kingdom, making it grow until it becomes a major power in the world.

We are looking forward to seeing how you shape your kingdoms and approach your adventures in Ellaria. Will you choose to be a brave warrior king like Aragorn, leading your troops to battle and taking part in dangerous adventures, or a clever tactician who rules from your throne like Havelock Vetinari? Maybe a mix of both like Julius Caesar – someone able to build an empire, but who doesn’t shy from blood and conquest?

Ellaria is waiting for you!

Factions and Diplomacy
Fri, 29 May 2020

Good day Ellarians!

A couple of weeks ago, we introduced to you the world of Ellaria and its different factions, but focusing on their lore and origins. In this week’s dev blog we want to expand on what each of them bring to the table in terms of gameplay. You will have to find a way to deal with them to carve a place in the world for your kingdom, either by keeping them under control through diplomacy or by defeating them in the battlefield. But Ancients, Goblins, Northerners and Bandits are quite different in their behavior and capabilities – so you will need a different approach for every faction.

We can’t go into too much fine detail because figuring out how to deal with every faction is part of the fun, of course; but we can at least outline how the different factions work. Just like you, each faction will adapt to their situation, looking for resources, trying to grow their kingdoms… They will have their own heroes, and eventually they will send them forth to race you to get riches and treasures like ancient and powerful devices. There will also be quests involving some of these factions which will have an impact on your relations with them – you can help them out to get in their good side… or, on the other hand, fulfill certain deeds to mine their power.

Diplomacy will also play a part, and each faction will approach it differently. Bandits, for instance, will try to keep their heads low, making themselves strong in their fortresses and strongholds without trying to expand their borders. Goblins and Northerners, on the other hand, are warrior cultures who will always test your strength and won’t hesitate to jump at your throat if you look vulnerable – unless you have gained your friendship, of course! The Ancients are a passive force, happy to be left alone – but terrible if you awaken their ire. That’s all the factions we know about for the time being -- but who knows, there might be surprises further down the road…

We have not yet implemented diplomacy options, but in the full release version, diplomacy will be a useful tool for you as a king and ruler. For a start, you can establish trade routes between factions, which will give you different bonuses to resources and/or research. This bonus affects your resource genereation and it’s cumulative: the more trade routes and the more resources, the more profit you get.
Once you are allied with a faction, you can even recruit their soldiers to help you at war. Even though we have not conceived diplomacy to be at the core of Legend of Ellaria, it is intended to be helpful and push you to make clever decisions. That’s not to say that it’s just a side thing: there will be different points in the main storyline where you can advance choosing a diplomatic route instead of taking arms.

Both the diplomacy and combat artificial intelligence systems of the different factions have been always one of our main focus in developing Legends of Ellaria. We knew that, for the game and its world to feel really alive, we needed its inhabitants to feel as authentic as possible – each faction needed to be unique and engaging. To be quite candid about this, it’s been a real challenge – but at the same time we have not found any major roadblocks: we’ve been working hard, iterating and improving every system, to get every feature as near perfect and balanced as we humanly could within the limited time that we had and without blowing the scope of the game too much. We are satisfied with the results, but the ultimate judges will be you!

In next week’s dev blog, we will talk about heroes, quests and exploration of the world.

See you next week, Ellarians!

Good day Ellarians!
In some of our previous blogs, we have mentioned a few times your heroes. They are powerful NPC companions that will be key for you to succeed as a ruler in Legends of Ellaria. To put it in a nutshell, they can do almost everything that you can as a king: they can take on quests, attack other armies and guard locations. They are, essentially, your most trusted generals and advisors, like the Knights of the Round Table were to King Arthur.

Heroes are one of the features of Legend of Ellaria that will significantly improve in the full version of the game (to be released soon, remember!). Right now, they are controlled by their own AI, and they come with their own gear that you cannot change. They act as a "premium AI," so to speak, which can take care of some things for you. You cannot be leading troops everywhere, for instance – sometimes, it just won't be efficient for you to go to every battle personally. In those cases, you can send your heroes to lead the army for you, controlling them in the world map the same way you control your character.

Heroes also have classes, skills and abilities, and they level up and get more powerful by taking part in quests and battles. When heroes lead an army, they make it more powerful, allowing them to defeat bigger armies. At the moment, you can send them to do certain quests, but not to take them to quests with you – although they can join a battle to help your side.

Right now, that's all they do – but we plan to flesh them out much more. For a start, we're planning to make heroes controllable, so you can "possess" them and do quests by yourself. Taking into account that heroes have character classes, skills and abilities, this means that you will get to experience incredibly varied gameplay: tired of ruling a kingdom? You can become a destructive elemental wizard, a swift archer, a fearsome warrior… and experiment with different gameplay styles at any moment.

Heroes are especially relevant to quests – and not only because you can send them to clear quests for you, but also because in order to get the very best of them, you need to complete a few special quests. Thing is, there will be two different types of heroes: the less powerful ones will be randomly generated, but the really strong companions are a certain number of special heroes… who will only join your army if you help them before.

Now, it's common for quests to end up feeling a bit like a chore – please take this package to this town, or go fetch ingredients for me, or clear this area of monsters… We wanted the main quests to be more fleshed out than this; let's take a look at how an actual quest would look like without spoiling interesting details of the story. For instance, a quest might require us to track down a sorcerer to his secret hideout. Then you infiltrate the tower, trying not to alert the guards, and when you face the sorcerer and try to talk him into coming with you without giving trouble… well, things go south from there, and you need to use your wits and not just your own magical skills to get out of this situation.
One of the best things about these quests is that they will take you to explore the world of Ellaria in the first-person view – which is not only rich but very, very big! Ellaria spans on multiple world maps (which are not all available right now; we will release them one by one further down the road). Each map is divided into tens to hundreds of hex areas, and each hex area is at least 1 km2, with several locations and places of interest, as well as multiple treasures and some hidden items. You will find several biome types, such as hills, mountains, and you will also find unique biomes in later maps. Every Hex map is divided into several sub-areas, so if you build a farm in the world map, switch to the first-person exploration and walk to it, you will find the farm, but also two more places of interest or wild animals at least.

But the most interesting thing about these areas is that they are affected by their location: for instance, you are most likely to find goblins in hexes controlled by them. When you conquer these lands, they will change to farmlands (or bandits if your kingdom has a high crime rate!). And how big are these hexes? It will take you several minutes to cross a whole hex – and that's if you don't get distracted with something interesting on your way… or stopped by enemies attacking you! You can spend an hour on each hex, and that's just exploring.

As you can see, Ellaria will be a rich, big world for you to explore, and not just with your own characters but with several others, so you never get bored of it. That was all for today; we'll be back next week with another blog – but this time, we want you to decide what we talk about. Send us your questions in the comments section or through the forums, and we'll pick the most interesting ones and answer them in a Q&A next week.

See you soon, Ellarians!

Good day Ellarians!

We’re back with a new entry of our blog series about Legends of Ellaria, its full-release features and its development process. Last week we discussed heroes and quests, and how exploration will feel in the final version of the game. We also invited you to send us your questions about the game so we could do a Q&A this week. We have received so many questions through Steam, Discord, social media, etc. that we couldn’t fit them all in just one post, so we have decided to break it into two weeks; here you have the first selection of questions; the rest will be answered next week. Thanks to everyone who dropped by to say hello and ask about the game!

QUESTION: Will we only be able to control the "king"? Will we be able to take over anyone in the army? Your character is the ruler of their own faction, so yeah, you can definitely control the king! As for other characters, you will be able to “possess” your heroes to control them directly in first-person view, just as you do with the main character. Controlling simple NPCs (foot soldiers, etc.) won’t be possible.

QUESTION: How deep is the dialogue system with NPCs? Heroes and other important NPCs will have their backstories, related quests and opinion on events happening in the world that you can explore through dialog. Smaller NPCs won’t have real dialogs as such.

QUESTION: What feature are you guys most excited to complete? Probably this answer would be different in different stages of the development -- but right now, we’d say that the quests, as well as the dialogue and storyline choices related to them. After working hard in creating Ellaria and its multiple locations, we’re incredibly happy to be able now to fill it with stories and people so it feels like a living place. The same applies to events that affect directly your playthrough, altering your kingdom production, hiring soldiers, and changing your alliances with other factions.

QUESTION: Is the leveling going to be like The Elder Scrolls, where one character can do anything, they just have to level the right skill up -- or are you going to have specializations where each class can do certain things? The leveling is more similar to The Elder Scrolls: you can choose to focus on one class or on multiple ones; there are no limitations on the skills, proficiencies and attributes that you can choose, but there will be a limited amount of points to spend for each level. We think this system is the right one for players to mold their characters as much as possible to their playstyle.

QUESTION: How long do you intend the story to be? The main story will span through multiple quests, NPC stories, and maps. You won't have to go through it in one go, mind you -- there are several side quests that will help you advance. All in all, there are four chapters, with each chapter spanning through an entire map, making the main story quite long.

QUESTION: Will diplomacy be available with all the factions? There is a diplomacy system indeed (you can read more about it here [link]), but not all the factions are “approachable” through diplomacy. Some factions will just not talk to you, while some will have limited dialog options. Others will allow trade and alliances – but only if you are on their good side.

QUESTION: What type of itemization can we expect (armor sets, epics, uniques etc.)? There will be armor sets and unique items, as well as special items that are so powerful that will cost a fortune. But that’s only characters’ items – along with these items, we're working on unique items that will boost the strength of your army as a whole, or produce resources for the entire kingdom.

QUESTION: Will they support the game with expansions or new worlds? We're planning to add modding support and expansions after full release. We're also planning new locations and races.

QUESTION: Is there an intrigue or relationship system similar to the Mount & Blade saga? Not at the moment. There are some quests that will affect your relations with factions or heroes depending on the choices you make, though.

QUESTION: Will there be a cooperative multiplayer? We’re not working on it right now, but it’s not out of the question either. It will have to wait at least after full release, mind you.

Thanks for reading this far, and see you next week with more questions, Ellarians!

Community Q&A - Part2
Thu, 18 June 2020

Good day Ellarians,

and welcome back to our weekly dev blog about Legends of Ellaria!
Last week we opened up this blog to your questions in a Q&A, but we couldn't fit them all in just one post, so we saved some for this week. Without further ado, let's go with your questions about how the full release version of Legends of Ellaria will be!

QUESTION: Can you explain how the leveling system will work in more depth?
As it's common in roleplaying games, you gain experience points (XP) by completing quests or performing certain tasks. When you get enough XP, your character levels up and gain points that can be spent in improving your Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, etc.), class Proficiency (Warrior, Mage, etc.), or Skills. These Skills give you specific perks, such as new spells or boosts to your abilities (like a +10% bonus to Melee). You can spend these points however you like – you can combine classes to get a jack-of-all-trades character build, go min/max for a super-optimized character… that's your choice!

QUESTION: Will heroes have their own personality, goals and methods?
Each hero has their own backstory, and you will need to complete certain tasks to hire them. Once they pledge their loyalty to you, though, they won't break their vow nor betray you. And about their methods, it's you who issue orders after all!

QUESTION: Will there be leadership skills to inspire your army in combat?
There is an army morale system and an army strength system. When you gain victories, complete, or use special items, your army's morale will rise for a limited time – which in turn makes your army stronger. On the other hand, if you start losing battles, you will lose morale, which will make your army weaker. There are other events that can affect your morale, like curses. We're planning to add a leadership skill that will give you a bonus to both your kingdom and your armies.

QUESTION: What about civilians – do your leadership skills affect them in any way?
For now, we don't have any rebellion or loyalty/disloyalty mechanic based on your or your heroes' skills. There is an equivalent to the moral system of your army, though: there are events that affect the happiness of your population. Low happiness increases crime, which can generate enemies who will raid your cities.

QUESTION: Can I be evil?
You can choose evil paths in some of the quests. You can also run your kingdom in an "evil" way. There is no Karma system that will tag you as "evil" at the moment, mind you.

QUESTION: Is there a main quest to be completed, or is the game a full sandbox?
Yes, there is. Although Legends of Ellaria is a sandbox with no end or time limit, your quest follows the main story that will take you to different maps and make you face unique enemies. We can't give you more details on that at the moment, though, or we would spoil all the surprises!

QUESTION: Will there be a New Game+ option?
Not as such. You can re-play specific chapters of the main story, though. When restarting a chapter, you will always start with the same XP and completed tasks that you had when you reached that point for the first time. That feature is meant for you to try different choices and approaches. Let's see an example: in a first playthrough, you can try building a military kingdom, researching the most powerful units, and conquering everything on your wake. On a second playthrough, you would follow the mage's path, investing heavily in your magical academy and making mages the core of your army surrounded by a multitude of weaker military units. You would also complete some quests to enlist golems to your army to act as your tanks. In your third gameplay, you can focus on the economic side, making ludicrous amounts of gold and using it to hire mercenaries instead of keeping a standing army. Or you can repeat chapters to experiment with different choices that would change the storyline.

That's it for today! Next week we'll dive into the real-time strategy part of the game, discussing battles and their gameplay, the kind of tactics you can use, how the enemy AI will be…

See you then, Ellarians!

Ellaria - RTS Combat
Thu, 25 June 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

We are back again to our weekly dev blog about Legends of Ellaria. After two weeks of answering your questions (you can check our Q&As here https://store.steampowered.com/newshub/app/621070/view/2489876169932442978  and here https://store.steampowered.com/newshub/app/621070/view/2414440242053953496 ), we’re back to our regular schedule of dev blogs. Today, we want to explore another key feature of our game with you: the real-time strategy battles! As you may already know, Legends of Ellaria is a one-of-a-kind type of game. It’s neither an action RPG or an RTS, but a unique blend of all these genres and mechanics. We want to discuss a little bit more about what managing your units in combat in real-time really means.

First of all, remember that Legends of Ellaria is all about choice. Once you are about to enter a battle you’ll have to decide if you want to fight alongside your soldiers in the battlefield or if you prefer to take a strategic view, so you can guide your troops from distance. Either in first person or in RTS mode, you won’t be able to position your troops before battle; instead you will have some time until you clash with the enemy’s army that can be used to issue orders to your troops. When the blades start to crash, keep in mind that you may also command your troops to attack, defend or to follow another thanks to a shortcut. The target of those orders will be the center of your screen so be careful where to position the camera before shouting an order!

But while fighting on the battlefield may be more epic, doing it in the RTS mode might help you to save more of your soldiers’ lives! At any point during combat you can switch to the RTS menu with a classic overview cam. The UI will remind you some of the genre’s classics, like StarCraft: you will be able to select individual units or multiple one by clicking and dragging on the screen and, then, issue the same three orders that we explained before.

Keep in mind that, while in RTS mode, you can command your troops in some different ways . You can use filters to select specific units (i.e. archers) or you can select individuals or groups and command them to follow orders. Picture yourself in battle: after weakening your enemies with your archers, you order your infantry forward into close combat, locking the enemy in its position. You are ready for the final blow: you send a platoon you had reserver to flank the enemy troops and attack it in their most vulnerable point, outnumbering them in the battlefield.

Legends of Ellaria offers you a wide variety of troops with different strengths and weaknesses, so you will have to choose wisely how to approach every combat. First, we would like to emphasize that units can be upgraded through research (hunters, militias, swordsmen, royal guard) or the academy (mages, golems) but you may also get some mercenaries, unlocked through quests. Mercenaries will cost twice as much as training a soldier and their upkeep is three times higher… but they don’t consume any manpower, meaning you can hire as many as you want.

Going back to our regular troops, militias are the cheaper (and weaker) units: useful for reducing crime in your kingdom, but not as good in the battlefield.Archers are good piercing armors but lousy in melιe combat. Swordsmen are one of the most important units, able to hold their ground against most opponents. And if you want to push for the best of the best, the Royal Guard is the highest level knight with and exceptional armor and melιe weapons.

You will also need to add some variety to your army to ensure that you cover every possible situation. And here’s where the Academy comes to your rescue. This building will allow you to train golems (basically walking tanks), mages and other specialized units will come in handy. You will be able to upgrade the academy through quests, discovering ancients or investing in magic.

Just a few more quick notes about units. First, unlike your heroes, they are supposed to be expendable troops, and thus they do not gain XP or level up during the game: the only way to upgrade them is through research upgrades for your army. And second, be aware of the economy side of building and maintaining an army. A strong soldier may cost as much as 10 weaker soldiers, but won't necessarily win a fight against 10 weaker soldiers. The point is you'll have to balance your army between few elite soldiers, or a horde of weaklings that will lose soldiers in each battle. If you do have the manpower and plan on winning battles through numbers, you should take care about the upkeep costs; because you will need to pay wages and feed your soldiers, and may go bankrupt before you win the war.

See you next week, Ellarians!

Ellaria - Classes & skills
Thu, 2 July 2020

Good day, Ellarians! In this week’s dev blog, we want to show you some more information about character classes and skills in Legends of Ellaria, so you get a proper picture of what it will mean to create, and evolve, a character in our game. Please remember that you can check our latest announcement covering RTS combat as well as a Q&A - Part 1 and Q&A - Part 2!

When you create a character, there are three areas that can be improved: attributes, proficiencies and skill points. Attributes are the most basic characteristics of your character, very similar to ones you can find in any other RPG such as Strength, Intelligence or Charisma. Proficiencies measures how good you are at a given class (more on that later), while skill points can be spent on the skill trees available for every class.

You will start your Ellarian character with a number of points that you must spend on Attributes, Proficiencies and Skills. You will receive more points every time you level up, and you may also learn some skills or proficiencies by completing selected quests or events. Don’t worry too much over the character creation phase, as you will never paint yourself into a corner: in Legends of Ellaria you forge your character through the story; you can always decide which path you want to take.

Things get interesting when we talk about classes and skill trees. There are up to five classes (Warrior, Ranger, Elemental Mage, Druid Mage, Rift Mage) and two additional skill trees (Defender, Warrior Spirit) to improve your character even more.

Whenever you decide which class you want to dig deep into, you must spend enough attribute and proficiency points in it. For example, a Warrior will need enough strenght and proficiency points to unlock those skills. The more points you spend, the better the skills in its tree will be unlocked. For instance, the "Swift Warrior" skill will give you + 10% critical damage, +10% melee attack speed, and will unlock further skills that will stack to give you quick and deadly strikes, while the "Raw Strength" skill tree will unlock slower but more powerful melιe attacks.

Talking about melιe combat, we have this interesting feature called melιe combos, that you unlock alongside your skills. Each combo will perform an extra uninterrupted animation, up to hitting your enemies faster and increasing your DPS and enemy response time.

As we have mentioned, these are the main five you will be able to choose:

- Warrior: Focused on melιe damage, can fight with heavy (but slow) or light (but quick) weapons.
- Ranger: experts on ranged combat, able to zoom their view in.
- Elemental Mage: A pure mage able to cast deadly fire, frost and energy spells.
- Druid Mage: Kind of a support mage, able to spawn creatures that fight for you while healing yourself and your party.
- Rift Mage: His focus is teleportation and shield barriers. In higher levels, you can also cast guided projectiles.
- Defender & Warrior: As we told you before, these are more prestige classes –specialized skill trees that improve some capabilities such as resilience, velocity or another specific skills.
Legends of Ellaria doesn’t have a level cap, although getting to each new level will increase the number of required XP. We are confident that getting through level 50 will be difficult enough for 99% of the players, let alone getting to level 99. And remember, every new level will grant you attribute, proficiency and skills points.

We hope you now have a clearer picture of how your character will be built in Legends of Ellaria. Stay tuned because we will have more information to share in the coming weeks.

Have a nice day!

Ellaria - Economy
Thu, 9 July 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

We are back at our weekly dev blog, where we are showing you more details about the upcoming full release version of Legends of Ellaria. In the past, we have discussed a few times how in Ellaria you are not only a hero yourself but also the ruler of a kingdom. And it doesn't matter how fantastic a setting is, there is something that all rulers have to take care of: the economy of their kingdoms. Today we're discussing how the economy works in Legends of Ellaria!

Even though the economy of this game is not as complex as it can be in a 4X game, it plays an important role in your story. Your management of your kingdom affects its general happiness, which in turn affects its productivity. Military victories, good management, certain world events and completing quests raise happiness. A bad economy management, overbuilding, crime rates and unhappiness will reduce your income and productivity.

If that happens, it's a slippery slope. If you can't pay your troops, your soldiers will desert you; if you don't pay the upkeep costs of your buildings, they will stop working. If you don't produce goods and food, more soldiers and people will desert you, it will raise unhappiness in your kingdom, which in turn will lower your overall production… You see where this leads.

Does that mean that you will have to go through complex economic planning to play Legends of Ellaria? Not really: you can play as an adventurer/conqueror king ΰ la Richard Lionheart and ignore most of your kingdom management. You'll have to invest a minimum effort in building some buildings and defending your kingdom, mind you – but the minimum kingdom management is provided through quests and is quite easy to understand. The goal of the game is not to build and manage an empire.

However, if you do increase your economy and develop an empire, you'll have a strong army by your side and more tricks up your sleeve, since you will have money to spend in researching, items, etc. Take libraries, for instance. If you can build one and spend time researching, you can discover more advanced buildings and increase your tax efficiency and resource production. And with the surplus that will get you eventually, you can get bigger armies and arm them to the teeth…

There are four types of resources: gold, food, manpower, and raw materials. You produce food mostly in your farms, and your citizens and armies will need it for obvious reasons. Raw materials (wood, stone and iron) are produced through specific buildings such as lumberjacks and mines. You need some gold for the upkeep costs of your kingdom, and you can use your surplus income to build more buildings, raise armies and hire mercenaries. And lastly, the more manpower you have, the more taxes you can collect and the bigger the army you can hire.

So, what can you do to produce gold? This resource is generated by taxing your citizens and through trade buildings. The more cities, people and buildings you control, the more citizens you have and the more taxes you can collect. You do decide the tax level and manage its gathering, though – if taxes are too high, your people will get angry, their production will be reduced and they may even cause unrest.

The tax efficiency is also affected by the level of research in tax gathering, your kingdom management level, and crime rate. So, if you have built too many houses, but without the infrastructure needed to support them, your tax gathering may stay the same. On top of that, some special buildings like gold mines and taverns can generate revenue without taxation. You can also sell your surplus resources in the market, which means that you can create a trade-based economy if your kingdom is efficient enough to gather a certain resource.

Apart from building, you can use your gold to found new villages and strongholds that will expand your territory and defend key positions. You can also buy epic magic items, and most importantly, raise armies for your military exploits. If you also invest in research and military buildings, you can train a strong army, but if you'd like to skip that, you can hire mercenaries – they cost more money and have a higher upkeep, but they don't lower your manpower, so you can hire as many as you want!

This is a brief overview of how the economy works in Legends of Ellaria. As you can see, it's not something we force more adventure-oriented players to go through – but those willing to manage their kingdom and make it prosper will have even more options and possibilities in their hands.

That's all for today, see you next week, Ellarians!

Ellaria - The importance of city planning
Thu, 16 July 2020

Good day Ellarians!

In our last dev diary, we discussed how the economy of your kingdom will work in Legends of Ellaria – but we focused mostly on its macro economy, that is, the management of your kingdom at large. However, we did mention how cities contribute to your economy, and some of the actions you can take to improve them because there is a microeconomy side of things too. This week we're focusing on cities and how you manage them to make them the strong and powerful heart of your land.

You already know that towns share resources with your kingdom: that means that everything that each city produces goes to the kingdom coffers, so to speak, and in turn, every city can count on that "treasure" for its needs. You don't have to worry about how to move your gold or wood from one point to another. However, cities do have their own internal management. Every city has its manpower capabilities, which depends on how many houses you have built. You need that manpower in turn for building utility buildings such as barracks, markets, workshops, etc.

On the other hand, your kingdom has an upper management limit, and both houses and buildings draw from these management capabilities. Thus, you cannot spam housings to build as many buildings as you want, because then your kingdom would suffer undermanagement. There is a delicate balance to be found there: you just cannot build everything in every city, so you will have to "specialize" them and make them as efficient as possible if you want to get the most out of them and of your kingdom economic potential.

And there is quite a bit of variety when it comes to building. The most basic thing you can build is houses and props (such as fences, fountains, etc.). There are places that increase happiness and give you revenue depending on the number of citizens you have, like taverns and markets. Then there are military buildings, such as blacksmiths and barracks, which allow you to recruit or upgrade your soldiers. You can also build places for gathering resources or upgrade some capabilities, like farms, granaries, or metallurgist. You have research buildings too, like libraries, to research new technologies that help you get more happiness, more tax efficiency... The more libraries you have, the faster your research goes!

There is a peculiar place of building you can create to help you manage another kingdom-wide statistic: happiness. If you recall previous dev blogs, unhappiness leads to a decrease in general efficiency and can cause problems like bandits roaming your lands. You can put buildings and props in your cities to increase happiness: gardens, fountains, and some other buildings. Since happiness is a kingdom stat, you can devote one or several towns to increasing the overall happiness of a kingdom while other towns focus on construction.

As it happens with every other gameplay feature of Legends of Ellaria, you can manage your city and build new places both in the first- and third-person view. In the world view, you can choose a house or building, just click +, and have it put in place automatically. But if you want to design and customize your town by yourself, creating your own districts and putting props in place, you can enter the Build menu from inside the town during the first person to RTS menu. In this menu, you can position your houses wherever you want, just as long as nothing obscures it.

And since you're at it going around your city, you can stop a minute to chat with your citizens! You can have a basic conversation with your subjects, and even help them with their daily choirs to increase their overall trust in you as a king. You can buy and sell items at vendors like the market, tavern, blacksmith, and other locations, "borrow" (ahem) household items from houses, and smelt stuff at the blacksmith to get ore. You can also talk to the librarian and take quests to help him find ancient devices, which will increase your research capabilities.

As you can see, cities in Legends of Ellaria are a thriving, living place that you can customize to make it really your own places.

Remember that Legends of Ellaria is nearing its full release, so don't forget to Wishlist the game and Follow it here on Steam so as not to miss anything – and see you next week in the next entry of our dev blog!

Good day Ellarians!

Last week, we took you on a short trip through the beautiful lands of Ellaria in our weekly dev blog, showing you how the landscapes and cities of the game will look in its full release version. This week though we wanted to finish this “sightseeing tour” by visiting some of the locations that you’ll be able to walk in: castles, palaces, but also humble houses or even caves. So let’s start with our “Ellarian Indoors Tour!”

The first set of images belong to the Ancients – the mighty race that once ruled over Ellaria and disappeared (no one really knows why or how) some time ago. They left behind impressive stone structures such as these ones… and who knows what kinds of treasures and artifacts could be found in them!

Castle are much more than stronghold of your kingdom, like stone guards for your frontiers and crossroads. But on top of that they are also your seats of power – and that comes with certain luxuries and beauties, for no proper king worth of his crown would live in a simple concrete hole!

Talking about holes in the stone… here you have some pictures from the very heart of Ellaria – natural caves where certain minerals and gems can be found.

Here you can see some other buildings you can visit in your travels: three peasant’s houses, a library, a mage’s tower and a tavern.

And last but not least… take a look at how beautiful your character’s house can look. These pictures are taken in the player’s residence as the sun sets over Ellaria.

That’s all for today and for our special tour through Ellaria! We hope these pictures have given you a sense of the scale of this world – both of its variety and size, but also of the quality you can expect from the full release version of the game… which, do not forget, will come very soon! Ellaria - World Generation
Thu, 6 August 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

Over the last two weeks, we took a tour of the world of Ellaria. First, we visited some of its most gorgeous landscapes and took a look at how the cities of its world will look like. But we also took our time showing indoor spaces such as houses, palaces or dungeons. This week we want to take a different look at Ellaria’s world and how the dev team has worked to make it procedurally generated so it always looks unique to our players.

Let’s start talking about the world map. Ellaria is huge and we wanted every region to have a unique flavor. How we managed to accomplish that? We have a set of map templates and a smart slot system that can fill that region with villagers, goblins, bandit camps, or other elements according to the faction that rules that area. This way, every location you visit will look different from the ones at other locations. This also means that you will find unique generated resources or enemies.

To make the world of Ellaria a unique place we had to design a system so each house was different from each other. We have worked on a system that changes its appearance on both the inside and the outside. Each house is connected to the biome it’s built, so when the map generates it, it also adds grass or flowers around it. Houses can have small, medium, or large sizes, and their insides are also procedurally generated. Each one has its own set of furniture and every piece of furniture also generates its items. For example, a bookshelf will have candlelights or books you can read. A cupboard will have cutlery and accessories that you can grab and trade in the market or the blacksmith to get some iron.

We have also worked to have unique dungeons in Ellaria’s world. They work similarly to our houses. We have a set of around 15 templates but each one of them generates different enemies, chests, and random resources so you won’t find two that look like the same. Speaking of resources, Ellaria is a good place to look and gather them. Resources can be useful if you want to trade them in the market and can also be used for other purposes, such as crafting weapons or armors. Lumber, gold, iron, stone, or food can be collected around Ellaria and you will have to find them at locations where they are supposed to be. So, look for stony structures to get stone or look for gold in bandit camps. You can also mine, chop, and farm to help boost your kingdom’s resources.

There’s one last item that we wanted to talk about today: rift stones. These magical stones are very rare, have great power, and give you very precious resources. You can trade them for gold, for research or to boost your kingdom’s production. But you can also use them to buy golems, activate portals, or craft special weapons. How you use their special power will be up to you… just remember to use it wisely!
That’s all for today. Ellaria’s world will be full of interesting places to discover and interact with, hidden caves, and interesting people to meet.

We hope you will be having as much fun exploring every corner of it as we are having while designing it!

Ellaria - RPG/Strategy
Thu, 13 August 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

As you may remember, a few weeks ago we posted a dev diary that explored the combat system. You may recall that Legends of Ellaria is a unique blend of RPG and real-time strategy so each player can approach the game as they prefer. You can get your hands dirty fighting bosses or you may take a calmer perspective looking at combat from an aerial view like you may do in many RTS titles.
This philosophy also applies when considering how to embrace Ellaria’s world. You may choose between playing from a more role-playing perspective or you can focus on strategy, making big decisions, and letting everybody else do the job. It’s your call, but since these genres are very different from each other, we can't design a game where you can play with only one of the genres, and we can't force you to master both.

We think we have found an answer to that problem. And that answer is freedom, so players can have multiple ways of doing a task. For instance, there are four different ways to fight a battle. The most obvious is entering into the battlefield to fight in the first-person mode, using your weapon of choice or magic. But let’s pretend you have a sizable army with you: you can point at your enemy, issue commands, and then, simply stay back and enjoy the fight. If you are more into a strategic approach, you can switch to the Real-Time Strategy mode and issue multiple commands to your soldiers. This mode will give you an edge, as you'll be able to defend soldiers, chose the soldiers that will engage in the first wave, and adapt to the battlefield. And lastly, you can resolve the battle by letting your army fight for themselves. Not entering the battlefield is the way of the king, observing from afar and treating every battle as a single move in a larger strategic plan.

Choices will be present at any point in the game. Think for a minute about exploration. Your character might be entering a new location as part of the main story. Next, he or she will meet one of the villains. Do you want to fight with your well-built character? Or do you prefer to press F2 and let your elite troops handle that enemy? It is your choice.

One last thing we want to clarify: this approach not only sticks to battles. It actually can be used when performing any task. You can build a farm and manage it as a strategic location or you can go to that farm, perform quests, meet your fellow farmers, and gather extra food for your kingdom using farm equipment. In the end, you will be the one choosing how to live your life, either as a king or as a self-made hero.

Ellaria - RTS advanced guide
Thu, 20 August 2020

Good day, Ellarians!

In this week’s dev diary we wanted to go back to a topic we already visited a few weeks back: RTS combat. You might remember that we showed you a sneak peak of it, but considering we have worked on it over the past weeks, adding new features, we’d like to show you how it has evolved until now.
When you approach a battle in the world view, a button will pop-up offering you to join into combat. If you accept, you will enter the battlefield where you can choose between fighting in first-person camera or doing so in the real-time strategy mode. As you know, first-person combat will allow you to issue commands to your army to attack, defend, or follow you.

But let’s dig deeper into the RTS combat so you can gain an advantage in the battlefield. The first thing to note is that not all of your troops will enter the battlefield. Depending on the strength of your army and the enemy’s you will only get some of your troops and you might be able to use the rest of them as reinforcements later on (note that if your army is too small you will get all of your troops at once, but no reinforcements). So, if you attack a stronger army than yours, you will always find yourself in a weaker position than the enemy. In this case, it might be more responsible to go defensive to try to lose as few troops as possible while inflicting damage to your opponent. Note that the battle will end when one of the sides has lost more than 80% of their army.

To help you fight in RTS mode we have also implemented new features. Positioning is a key aspect in the battlefield so we will give you tools to select and move your troops in an efficient way. One of them is the ability to group your soldiers and bind keys so you can select them in a faster manner. For example, select a group of archers and click Ctrl + number and then click that number and you will be in control of that group. This might be useful to have different groups for your archers or your melee fighters.

Speaking of archers, positioning them will be important as they don’t fire on friendly troops. One way to deal great damage with them is by positioning them on a side of the battlefield, so they will have a clear line of view. If you set some melee fighters in a defensive formation in front of them you can set a trap for your enemy, that will fight a shield wall while receiving arrows from their sides.
Commands will also be important in RTS fights. We talked a little bit about this before, bet let us elaborate a bit more about how to do it in a battle. There will be three commands available to players: move, stop, and attack. The move command will move to a location, usually without attacking anything on the way. The stop command will tell the soldiers to stop moving and fight anything near them (though pressing the stop command twice will enter a "defend" mode, in which your soldiers will stop and stand their ground). And finally, the attack command will tell your soldiers to go to a location and fight anything on the way.

You will be able to issue multiple commands so you won’t have to be paying attention to every movement of your army. For example, if you need to outflank your enemy you can issue the following orders: go left, then go north, then attack move. Outflanking is an important maneuver in Legends of Ellaria. When a soldier is hit from behind, he receives double damage, so you should make sure that your soldiers are not attacked from multiple sides. There are easy ways to avoid this, such as selecting a dozen soldiers and tell them to go to a location. They will arrange themselves as a formation pointing to that location.

And that’s it for today. The size of your army, its position on the battlefield, and the commands you issue will be important features of RTS combats. We hope you have learned a little more about it in this week’s dev diary.

See you next week, Ellarians!

The wind howls, and there are strange whispers in the dark. The sound of soft footsteps come from empty, long forsaken rooms. Around a crackling fire, the elders tell stories of old – stories of hags and warlocks, wicked tricksters and evil spirits. Halloween is here, and the spooky season comes to Ellaria too!

It’s been some time since our last update; we’ve been hard at work developing new content for the game, and we’re really excited to share with you some details about the next update of Legends of Ellaria. This will be one of the biggest updates in a long long time, so buckle up to check what’s coming to your kingdom!

New locations to explore

Ellaria will be even bigger with new maps and locations to explore, with miles of terrain full of new dangers – and rewards for those brave enough to face these challenges. A multitude of new dungeons, caves, camps and villages will be added to the world map. Each new map is 2 in-game miles wide – about 8 times bigger than they were before, and with more things to do than ever!

New quests and events

We hope you have not stashed your weapon of choice too far if you felt at some point you were running out of adventures, we’re adding more than one hundred quests and events for you to experience, as well as new items to search! These quests may not only help you to level up your character, but also to affect your kingdom as a whole.

A new kingdom…

In the last months we’ve discussed how kingdom management was shaping up – you can read our dev diaries about it here and here. Finally, these features are coming to the game! Mine for resources, construct buildings in your cities (more than 20 new buildings added!) and research technologies to upgrade them, keep your army morale up and win battles to expand your borders.

…and new ways to rule it

You can be a ruler with an iron fist, expanding your kingdom through war and conquest, or an adventurer king who goes on special quests. You can hire mercenaries or improve your economy to keep a strong standing army. Real-time strategy battles have been revamped for a better strategic experience. There are many different approaches to governing – follow your heart and instincts to become the most powerful ruler of Ellaria!

Take detours

Ruling and going on adventures are just two of the many things you can do in Ellaria. Help your settlers working in the farmlands or mining for resources, talk to them to hear their personal stories, collect Artifacts for the librarian… even the new loading screen has minigames!

That’s is the tip of the iceberg: just about every feature of the game has received some kind of improvement, a huge step closer in our road towards full release. If all this sounds interesting… we have to say that it is only the beginning, for there is something even bigger coming to Legends of Ellaria: finally, the campaign main story is coming to the game! A story of heroes and villains, politics and intrigues, with many different characters, quests and epic battles, the main story spans through five chapters with multiple choices and side optional missions. In this next major update we’re releasing the first chapter of the main story – but that’s all we can tell you for now. We’ll give you more details about this in a few days, so stay tuned!

New dungeons and exploration and the upcoming Beta
Wed, 25 November 2020

Greetings Ellarians! As you surely have noticed, we’ve kept our heads low for several weeks because we were hard at work on some new content that will be released soon. This week, we just completed and polished a new feature we mentioned a few times before. Legends of Ellaria is getting dungeons!

As you may remember from previous dev and lore blogs, the Ancients left behind a multitude of structures and buildings. Among them, there are many underground constructions – mighty dungeons which purpose is now lost time, but which, thanks to the powerful technology and magic that the Ancients possessed, are still more or less intact and operative.

They are quite dangerous, though. The Ancients left behind powerful traps and magical machines protecting their bearings. Some are comparatively simple – they will shoot you a simple firebolt if you get too near. Others will fire strong spells that can kill an unprepared hero in a single hit. And they can’t be disabled or disarmed – you will have to find a way to destroy them altogether.

But traps aren’t the only hazard you will find in Ancient-made dungeons. They have been desert for so long that many different creatures have colonized them, and you will have to fight them to advance. However, fortune favors the brave – they who dare to explore one of these ruins and manage to clear them up can find treasures, gold, Riftstone, even Ancient devices that can be sold or given to your Librarian to increase their research.

Under the land of Ellaria, there are also vast complexes of natural caves. Riftstone can be found there too, as well as rich ores and sometimes treasures – all this can change the course of your kingdom for good. But, just as it happens with Ancient ruins, these caves tend to be inhabited and protected. Bandits and goblins make them their lairs, and you will have to face scores of them to get to their deepest levels.

In a nutshell: these places are dangerous and challenging, but they offer great rewards too. Their treasures can be the icing of the cake for wise kings who are great managers of their kingdoms – but also a way to balance things for more action-oriented kings, who favor personal strength and valor over strategy and resource management.. Exploring these areas and clearing them, as well as completing quests given by your advisor, will earn you enough wealth to build anything and hire an army to solve most problems that your kingdom may face.

There will be many different dungeons in Ellaria – some bigger than others, some more dangerous but with better rewards. We hope you have a great time exploring and clearing them!

Our plan is to update the game with this new content within a couple of weeks at most; we will let you know here as the date approaches. Thanks for reading, and may your adventures in Ellaria lead you to glory!

The new beta is coming soon!
Wed, 16 December 2020

This weekend, we’ll be releasing some content of its 1st chapter as a beta branch for those of you who want to help us
Greetings Ellarians! We’re happy to announce today a very important step in our path towards full release. As we have explained before, one of the most important features that will be implemented upon full release is the single-player story campaign. It will be an exciting, epic story that spans the whole continent of Ellaria. And this weekend, we’ll be releasing some content of its 1st chapter as a beta branch for those of you who want to help us fine-tuning it with your feedback!

To be more precise, this beta will offer around a 60% of all the content that will be included in the final 1st chapter of the campaign. This includes a good chunk of the main quests, side quests and many characters you can meet; we have stopped at a moment where the story starts branching into what will be found in Chapter 2. We think this is more than enough to offer a significant taste of what will be, without spoiling too much of the final experience (or leave the beta-testers hanging for too long!).

We have mentioned before that, when the story of Legends of Ellaria begins, you are escaping with your people from a dying world. Crossing a magic portal you get to Ellaria, where you settle and quickly gather strengths to become a brand new major power. To help you remember this backstory and give you a hint of what comes next, we’re revealing today the short cutscene that will play when you begin the 1st chapter of the story!

https://youtu.be/DyQABaac3gg

In the coming days we’ll give you more details about when this beta will be released and how to access it. After a short time in the beta branch, this content will be implemented in the main branch, available to all our players even during this last leg of our Early Access. Stay tuned – and happy holidays to you all!

If you own a copy of Legends of Ellaria but still haven't joined the closed Beta, please join us on our Discord server, PM us with @Admin and we will set you up! In case you don't have a Discord, you can also contact us here.

Thank you for the support, and we hope to build a great game alongside you.

See you in Ellaria,

The Larkon Studio Team

•   Fixed some cases where the game would crash when loading a new area
•   Fixed visual shadows in hill areas
•   Fixed some delayed appearing vegetation
•   Fixed loading from the main menu will sometimes get stuck
•   Tweaked rain effect and wetness dry speed
•   Restored some missing cave entrances and treasures

We are thankful to everyone who played the game and thank you for your feedback, we read your feedback carefully, and while some issues are easy to address, others will take a bit more time.

We also received questions about our future plans. Our plan is to continue to improve and update the game. Once we're satisfied with the results, we will post a new road map, showing our planned additions.

In the meanwhile, please continue to play, share your thought, and follow our updates
Thank you for your interest. See you in Ellaria,

Some Q&A
Sat, 17 July 2021

Greetings, Ellarians!

We've compiled a list of questions about our history and about our future plans. Have fun!

Q: Now that Legends of Ellaria is in full release, will the development continue.

A: Yes, it will. We are constantly working on improving and optimizing the game mechanics to run faster and with as few bugs as possible. In addition, we're working on some extra features and DLC's. One of which is the long awaited Necromancer DLC.

Q: Will you improve or change the game's main mechanics, such as the combat system or real-time strategy?

A: We're not planning to make any drastic changes beyond optimisations and tweaks to any main mechanics. We're flattered that our combat system and other mechanics were compared to AAA games, but we're a small team and our concept to link first person mechanics to real-time strategy and kingdom management mechanics together in a single game has its limitations. We are personally happy with the results and with the gameplay, as it exceeded our expectations.

Q: What inspired Legends of Ellaria's main story?

A: The concept was written a long time ago, during Legends of Ellaria's basic design. We drew a storyboard that spanned between several chapters. The initial story was comic, along with some story driven twists, such as a quest to defeat a monster to ally yourself with your neighbors, only to find out that the beast is a peaceful, huge creature that just misunderstood your neighbor's intention. We later changed the main story to be more serious, as it would miss out on the fantasy and lore aspects if it was too comic.

Because of our main story's complexity and multiple locations, we were worried that we wouldn't be able to design all the locations that you go through. However, we managed to add Marra, Greenside, the northerners' lands, the ancient beast, Arag's castle, the dark one's realms, and the Aunaloth monster through the four chapters in the final release. We were happy with the results and with the different atmospheres and location designs.

Q: There were talks about other features, such as siege weapons, races, etc. Where do we stand on that?

A: Our goal was to build the core of Legends of Ellaria and advance with our community's feedback. We learned which features were more important than the other through our community posts and votes and made a list of planned features by priority. Unfortunately, we couldn't add all these planned features.

Some of these features are the siege weapons feature and horses, which were added to a beta version in the legacy but were later removed because of technical limitations or game-breaking mechanics. Others were unique races, such as dwarves, which were too time-consuming to add. On the other hand, we managed to add features which we didn't think we'll be able to add, such as the three mage classes, multiple dimensions, and more.

We are now planning to add some of these features through DLC's, and we're currently working on the Necromancer DLC. We will try to add as many of the requested / planned features as we can.

Q: Community speaking, how did the community contribute, besides the general feedbacks?

A: Our community was the backbone of our progress from the early stage of development. We started with general community channels before we released the early access, which grew and participated over time to help us stay on the right track. Our community also participated in votes for features and priorities, as well as actual design concept votes.

Besides that, many of our members helped us with more than feedbacks. Some of them are Bardon, who helped translate much of our lore and dialogues and wrote some of Legends of Ellaria's stories. Others are Nito-Murray, who helped as a community moderator and also tested early versions before others. We also had many other volunteers who helped us test versions of the game before their official release through the beta testing program.

We want to thank our community. Your support helped us shape Legends of Ellaria.

Q: What is Larkon Studio's plans for the future ? Will there be a Legends of Ellaria 2 ? Or any other game?

A: We're looking into designing other games, including a design for Legends of Ellaria 2, set in the past during the ancients and dark ones wars. We don't have any information at this time, though.

Meanwhile, we're working on some DLC's for Legends of Ellaria, including the Necromancer DLC. We'll post more information on that in the following weeks.

That is it for today. Let us know If you have any other questions. Also, we will post another patch in the following days with some useful fixes. And again, thank you for your interest. See you in Ellaria,

Larkon Studio

Legends of Ellaria roadmap and plans
Sat, 14 August 2021

We are going to focus on tweaks, balancing, and improving features in our next versions

Hallo Ellarians,

First of all, we want to thank every one of you for your support over the years, and for your endless feedbacks and playtests, your forum and discord votes, chats, and suggestions.

We released Legends of Ellaria several months ago and received different varieties of feedback. We figured that some people might not connect with the way we designed and balanced the multi-genre gameplay style, but we received more feedback about that than expected.

So what now?
After years of constant development, sometimes 24/7 work(a dream job, what are you gonna do 😊 ), we focused on bugs and fixes while managing the team size and overall projects that Larkon Studio does. However, after reading your suggestions, we started to focus more on balancing and tweaking the gameplay and features in our next versions than just on bug fixes. We will improve the gameplay based on your feedback as much as possible as the first thing in our roadmap.

We can't give you exact dates, but we will go by this roadmap and update and add features to it as much as we can,

We want to thank you for your feedback and support. Please keep writing any suggestions on how to improve any aspect of the gameplay. We depend on your feedback and hope to get as much information as possible.

Version 1.0.1.11 - Combat Classes Balancing
Mon, 30 August 2021

Hallo Ellarians,

We just uploaded a new version with major balancing to combat damages and stats and a few minor fixes to dialogues and combat mechanics.

We took some of your suggestions and made some extensive tests to make sure that all the player classes are balanced. Some of the classes were weaker than others, and some, like the mage class, were strong at the beginning but would not scale properly as you level up.

Our biggest change was to the ranger class, as we've significantly increased the damage and accuracy at lower levels. We've made sure that the ranger class will be much deadlier and that you won't have to be level 15 or above to gain high bow accuracy

In addition, we fixed a persistent fire enchantment effect that would stay after the effect was done. We also made sure that the player will be able to remove the fire enchantment effect by casting the "Minor Dispel." We also fixed several issues with the merchant guild dialogues.

We wish to thank you for your feedback. We will continue to fix and tweak any issue we'll find and balance and add things by your suggestion. Also, stay tuned for the Necromancer DLC.

Version 1.0.1.11 Changes
(8/30/21)

Fixes
•   Fixed some issues with fire enchantment
•   Fixed "Minor dispel" not dispelling fire enchantment
•   Removed unused merchants guild dialogues for merchant chest

Balancing
•   Added +20% bow accuracy to Veteran Ranger instead of to Master Ranger
•   Added +30% bow damage for Veteran Ranger
•   Added +40% bow damage for Master Ranger
•   Added +30% bow draw speed to One Shot - One Kill
•   Increased all spell damage multiplier by proficiency by 30%. Higher mage class players will cause more damage

Happy Halloween and the upcoming Necromancer pack
Thu, 28 October 2021

Hallo Elarians, and happy Halloween.
We wanted to share with you some information about the upcoming Necromancer expansion. This expansion includes the necromancer class, new dialogues, and lots of new things you can do.

As a necromancer, you have the power to raise anyone from the dead to fight by your side.
This means that as long as you are not overwhelmed by your enemy, you'll be able to raise fallen enemy soldiers to fight against their friends during a battle.

Once you become a master necromancer, you'll be able to mass-raise any living creature that died during a battle to permanently fight on your side, to the point that you may end up with a stronger army after each battle.

But this power comes at a price, as the necromancer class uses dark magic, which is forbidden through your kingdom
. Because of that, you'll have to consider the consequences before becoming one.

As you gain knowledge in necromancy, your towns will lose happiness, gain corruption, and a massive drop in productivity
. You'll have to rely on your powers than on your kingdom to advance your goals.

In addition, any living creature that fights alongside the dead in the same army will receive a massive drop in morale
, to the point that soldiers, conscripts, and mercenaries may cause more harm than good to you and your undead during a battle.

Also, you can't be both a necromancer and a druid at the same time
, as these classes are almost opposite to each other. However, the druid's healing ability is replaced by the "Death Touch" spell, which will heal you and any undead and cause damage to any living or ancient creatures.

There are lots of other things, but we're leaving them for later. We don't have a release date for this expansion yet, but we'll post more updates as we make progress.

Please write any suggestion about what you think we should add.

Modding Support coming soon
Thu, February 10, 2022

Hallo Ellarians,

We've got some good news for you. After multiple changes and tests, we're getting close to adding modding support to Legends of Ellaria! Modding support means that anyone with the proper skills will be able to make significant game changes and publish them on the Steam Workshop.

Once we expose Legends of Ellaria's game engine and mechanics, You'll be able to control most of the game's logic and also be able to add new graphics. The modding support will be available and accessible for free to anyone with knowledge of making assets and scripts through Unity and C# language.

In addition to the modding support, we will publish a modding tool project and documentation. We're also going to create a new Discord server for anyone with questions and suggestions about modding LoE.

Also, we're going to include some of the Necromancer pack graphics and logics, for anyone who wants to make mods related to the undead. We're not done with the Necromancer DLC yet, but we feel that our community would benefit more if we focus on the modding support and allow anyone to make their own expansions and mods.

We're expecting the Modding Support to be ready in the following weeks. In the meanwhile, please continue to play and send us any suggestions and feedback. We thank you for your support.

Modding Support is here
Sat, 19 March 2022

Hallo Ellarians,

We've got some good news, the modding support is up and running, and it comes with a brand new modding tool.

The modding tool comes as a Unity Project with configurable interfaces and scripts that you can run during the game. We've also included documentation and an example mod that comes with the modding tool. In addition, we will support the modding tool through our discord channel and answer any questions you may have.

The modding works by connecting a manager script to Legends of Ellaria's. This manager script has simple methods such as
OnIngameDayPassed(), OnSaveGame().

We currently support graphic add-ons and in-game logics. However, there are so many ways to connect to Legends of Ellaria's code that
we will expand the modding tool functionality over time based on your suggestions.

Please write any suggestions about modding. We're available for any question in our discord channel. In today's version 1.0.1.17 (18/03/22)we changed the following:

•   Added modding support
•   Added undead logics and graphics for modding support.
•   Added a message "Achievements are disabled" when installing mods or using console commands.
•   Fixed some bugs

Hallo Ellarians,

To celebrate our one year anniversary, we've unlocked the in-game console commands, which will allow you to add money, items, armies, XP, teleport to locations, skip quests, and more.
We don't encourage you to use these commands but we figured out that some of you have already played Legends of Ellaria and would like a different experience.

To use the console commands, load / start a game, and then press the ~ button. You can then type in basic console commands such as AddItem('Gold', 1000) and Player_AddExp(1000)

Here's the full list of console commands: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2787472835&snr=2_groupannouncements_detail_

Its been a long year for us, full of adventures. Since the full release, we've added new graphics, features, quests and modding support. For our company's size, we always knew that we're over ambitious, but we've proud of the amount of systems we've added to Legends of Ellaria.

We also want to thank our community and our Beta testers for your support!

But we're not going anywhere, as we're still developing Legends of Ellaria. Our next goal will be to expand the modding support and to add support for the Steam Workshop.

In the meanwhile, please write any suggestions about modding. We're available for any question in our discord channel.

In today's version 1.0.1.18 (01/04/22) we changed the following:

    Unlocked the console commands
Fixed some bugs related to achievements.

New mods, new modding, and a one week 85% discount!
Sun, 21 August 2022

Hallo Ellarians,

We've just achieved a new milestone by finishing the new modding system and adding multiple new mods. And as a bonus, we've started a one-week 85% discount!

Based on your feedback and some of our ideas, we've added a few useful and fun mods to Legends of Ellaria. Although these mods are not official and may not be balanced, we sure had a lot of fun playing with them. Here are some of them:

Possess

You can now possess any person in the world, immediately gaining control, inventory and basic skills. You can also possess heroes to gain full combat and skill abilities.

Hardcore Mode

Is the base combat too boring? Try out a more challenging difficulty.

This mod increases all weapons and spells base damage to 200%, both for you and for your enemies. This means that combat is shorter and deadlier and armor is less effective. Because of that you'll have to be more tactical as some creatures may now kill you with a single hit.

Fast Runner

Tired of running from location to location? This mod removes all stamina cost of sprinting and increases your sprint speed, allowing you to explore the map faster.

The Swarm

Your enemies are determined to destroy your kingdom. They will fight you to the last breath.

This mod increases Bandits, Northerners, Dark ones and Zombies invasion time by 500%. This means that your kingdom will be invaded on average every three days or so. In some cases, you'll be attacked by multiple armies at the same time. You will have to defend your towns and outposts while quickly expanding your kingdom and economy if you want to survive.

We've made some other minor mods, and we've also released a new version with some minor bug fixes. Please let us know if you'd like us to add more mods. In the meanwhile, we thank you for your support and feedback.

Dear Ellarians.

We've made new features and important fixes in the last year, and now it's time to focus on old features. We're going to improve and remaster important parts of Legends of Ellaria.

Since we're more than an year after the full release, we're going to be creative and change core game elements, such as the character movement and loading screen. We've read your feedbacks and feel that these elements would be more important for you than adding a new feature.

So, we're going to work on the following things

1: Player Controller

    Player Movement feeling(speed, animations e.t.c).
    Player Combat moves and feeling.

2: RPG - Combat

Fix Skills/Abilities based on your feedbacks.
Rebalance The Skill Tree and bonuses.

3: Loading Screens

Remove the loading screens whenever possible.
    Decrease loading screen times.
Make a more immersive loading screen.

4: Performance

    Improve Framerate.
    Reduce system requirements.

5: Tutorial:

Mara (Chapter 0) will remain as it is, but will be converted to a mission instead of a game tutorial
Tutorial will start from Chapter 1, and will help the player to get familiar with the game

6: Missions:

Some missions will be rebuilt to improve the game lowness and to work better with a new tutorial.
Improve repeating missions and unnecessarily long missions.

7: RTS Combat:

    Fix AI Behavior.
Fix AI response to the player tactics.

8: Graphics:

    Improve general graphics.
Add some missing graphics and effects.

9: UI

Adjust the User Interface to be more fluent.

10: Inventory System

    Improve and balance inventory system.

This is a long list and we can't promise to change all of the above. We also can't tell you how long these changes will take. In the meanwhile, we would appreciate any suggestion as we want to focus on the most important things to change. We're available for any question and suggestion in our discord channel.

Optimisations and Improvements report
Thu, 3 November 2022

Dear Ellarians.

We wanted to share with you our current progress in improvements and remastering of Legends of Ellaria.

One of our main goals is to allow Legends of Ellaria to lower its system requirement. For that, we're in the process of improving and remastering all of our models and textures. This is a monumental task since Legends of Ellaria have thousands of assets. These improvements will lower the memory requirements and improve the frame rate, but we're also aiming to fix and improve some of these textures.

Based on your feedback, we're also working on the character movement to improve the responsiveness and animations . We noted that the jumping is clunky and that some of the movement and fighting is not fluent. We're going to try to improve the character as much as we can.

In future updates we'll work on changing quests, improving some of our graphics, and many other things that we gathered based on your feedback. In the meanwhile, we're available in our discord channel. We thank you for your support and feedback, please continue to give us more feedback and suggestions.
