I'll mention Fury  (http://"birthmoviesdeath.com/2014/11/03/fury-wrestling-with-the-flawed-end-of-a-great-movie")at the risk of getting flamed. To be honest, haven't seen it yet. But I've read that it's a great movie with a flawed ending.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OGvZoIrXpg

and the battle with the Tiger Tank:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8vFGQ0uJQc

Credit must be given to the makers of Fury for using the only working Tiger tank in the world in the movie. Prior to the movie, this had never been done before! The authentic Tiger tank exists in the Bovington Tank Museum in Southern England. It is Tiger Tank 131 which was the very first Tiger tank captured by the Allies during WW2. The video below explains.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deX5GNS0YTM

This video puts the Sherman tank (not Firefly) into perspective. It was an engineering disaster when faced against the German Tiger tank that had superior firepower and armour.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns6l7sCoWX4

Tiger vs Sherman. Shocking statistic: on the average, it took a squad (4) of Shermans to take out one Tiger - 3 Shermans sacrificed in order for the fourth one to take out the Tiger in the rear. The battle between these two tanks was won by the Sherman through overwhelming numbers and the ability for a knocked-out Sherman to be repaired, re-cleaned (argh!!!) and refitted within 36 hours, versus irreplaceble, unreliable, over-engineered Tiger tanks. At great cost to Allied tankmen. Watching this video made me realise the great sacrifice that the Allied tank crews paid over the plains and hedgerows of Normandy.

Cheers, Frankie Kam.

I have always liked the books from W.E.B. Griffin, Tom Clancy, and the Team Yankee book/series by Harold Coyle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy) you can pick any of his books about the military or war.

I spend hours, days, weeks, and months reading all of these books. Was great during and after high school, on active duty, and while deployed overseas.

Das Boot

Directors cut

Das Boot is an adaptation of the 1973 German novel of the same name by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. Set during World War II, the film tells the fictional story of U-96 and its crew. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country. The screenplay used an amalgamation of exploits from the real U-96, a Type VIIC-class U-boat.

Rated 8.4 on IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/

Flags of Our Fathers. This scene depicts the hell that was Iwo Jima. It's amazing that Clint Eastwood shot the original scenes in Iceland where the sand is black like in Iwo Jima which is now off limits to tourists.
Read the book, it's even better.

The video below shows you what Hollywood can do with special effects these days. It's simply amazing, bringing the Pacific WW2 back to life on the silverscreen.

Flags of our fathers is a great movie. Have you seen Letters from Iwo Jima

The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.

Same film but from the other perspective.

Since we're talking about the Pacific Theater in WWII, let me recommend a book titled With the Old Breed, by E.B. Sledge. It is by the far the most telling book I've read thus far about the brutality of modern warfare. The author, through his own experience in the Marines during Peleliu and Okinawa, provides an unromantic and visceral depiction of the sight, sound, and smell of combat. You won't be able to put it down.

As well as purely financial constraints, Iain Dickie also recognizes the fact that available space is another major restriction for many gamers and tackles this issue too. Now you've no excuse not to get wargaming! After 25 years as editor of Miniature Wargames magazine, Iain Dickie is one of the best known names in the hobby. He's even been on the telly, appearing alongside Angela Rippon in Games of War. He has recently retired as editor and intends to spend his time between writing and sailing and, of course, wargaming.

Red Tails (2013) was cut to ribbons by the critics who found the acting weak and dialogue cheesy. I watched the movie on DVD and I thoroughly enjoyed the CGI airbattle scenes and the gorgeous CGI rendering of the air battle over Europe. The star of the movie was the red-tailed P-51. It also gave you a taste of what the B-17 Boeing bomber crews faced in the WWII.
The trailer

P-51 (unrealistic but still thrilling) dogfights with Me262s

and more aviation combat scenes from the movie

Enjoy.
What Hollywood needs is a movie on the all-Black 761st Tank Battalion (United States), the first of many segregated combat units in WW2.

Waterloo Companion: The Complete Guide to History's Most Famous Land Battle

by Mark Adkin (Author)

Published by Stackpole Books, 2002
ISBN 10: 0811718549 / ISBN 13: 9780811718547

There have been many books about Waterloo, but never one to rival this in scale or authority. The text, based on extensive research, including many days spent on the battlefield itself, does far more than simply narrate the events of 18 June 1815. There is as much comment as description. Plans are analyzed, commanders assessed and manoeuvres painstakingly related to the ground. Armies, weapons and tactics are carefully examined and evaluated, and a considerable effort is made to answer the age-old battle questions of who?, when?, where?, how? and why? Neglected aspects of the fighting, such as the performance of the French ‘Grand Battery’ or the Prussian attacks on Plancenoit, are given prominence. A third of the text consists of ‘boxes’, each providing, often in anecdotal form, little known information or the first-hand accounts of those who fought upon this most celebrated of battlefields. The many full colour maps, all specially commissioned for the book, and the numerous diagrams and photographs, the majority in colour, make the pages a feast for the eye, while sixteen pages of original paintings of uniforms make it a collector’s dream.

The book is divided into ten sections:

The Campaign describes Napoleon’s escape from Elba and the dramatic events of the ‘100 days’, and examines the strategy of the three commanders-in-chief - Napoleon, Wellington and Blücher up to the eve of the battle.

Under Orders of Battle there is a comprehensive description of the make-up of the three armies, including order of battle diagrams, which show the organization of the armies, including unit strengths and commanders’ names, down to battalion and battery level.

Command and Control describes the command structures and the backgrounds and careers of the three commanders and all their corps and divisional commanders.

The Battlefield describes the key features of the terrain and the strongpoints of Hougoumont and La Haie Sainte that played such a critical role. Maps are used to show the initial deployment of forces by the opposing commanders. There is also a detailed description and map of the site as it is today, including the location of monuments and plaques, as well as a series of unique panoramic photographs of the present day landscape showing the deployment of forces at key stages in the battle.

Complete sections are then devoted to The Infantry, The Cavalry, The Artillery and Other Arms and Services (engineers, medical services and logistics units), describing their organization and equipment in detail. There is also an evaluation of the casualties suffered. These sections also include descriptions of the role and tactics of each arm. Numerous diagrams enable the reader to follow, for example, the drill by which an infantry battalion formed squares from lines, or to see how an artillery battery with its attendant limbers and supply wagons was deployed on the battlefield.

The Highlights describes the key events in the battle: the Allied defence of Hougoumont and La Haie Sainte, the initial French infantry attack, the assaults on the Allied squares by the French cavalry, the defence of Plancenoit against the approaching Prussians, and the dramatic repulse of the final attack by the Imperial Guard. With the help of numerous fully annotated maps, which show the position and movements of each unit, in some cases down to the level of individual companies, the reader can trace the course of the battle in detail while following the lively description of events in the text.

A concluding section is devoted to Myths and Controversies, demolishing some well-established versions of events that have long been accepted as ‘facts’ and analyzing the opposing views of historians on matters such as the importance of the Prussian role in the battle, Wellington’s use of his artillery, Ney’s persistence in mounting the fruitless cavalry charges against Wellington’s squares, and the formation adopted by the Imperial Guard for their final attack.

Demolishing the Myth: The Tank Battle at Prokhorovka, Kursk, July 1943: An Operational Narrative

Hardcover – July 19, 2011
by Valeriy Zamulin (Author), Stuart Britton (Translator)

http://www.amazon.com/Demolishing-Myth-Prokhorovka-Operational-Narrative/dp/1906033897

A groundbreaking book when first published in Russia in 2005, now Valeriy Zamulin's study of the crucible of combat during the titanic clash at Kursk - the fighting at Prokhorovka - is available in English. A former staff member of the Prokhorovka Battlefield State Museum, Zamulin has dedicated years of his life to the study of the battle of Kursk, and especially the fighting on its southern flank involving the famous attack of the II SS Panzer Corps into the teeth of deeply-echeloned Red Army defenses. A product of five years of intense research into the once-secret Central Archives of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Zamulin lays out in enormous detail the plans and tactics of both sides, culminating in the famous and controversial clash at Prokhorovka on 12 July 1943. Zamulin skillfully weaves reminiscences of Red Army and Wehrmacht soldiers and officers into the narrative of the fighting, using in part files belonging to the Prokhorovka Battlefield State Museum. Zamulin has the advantage of living in Prokhorovka, so he has walked the ground of the battlefield many times and has an intimate knowledge of the terrain.

The Viaz'ma Catastrophe, 1941: The Red Army's Disastrous Stand against Operation Typhoon
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51asNlhBFvL._SX333_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg)

Hardcover – July 23, 2013
by Lev Lopukhovsky (Author), Stuart Britton (Translator)

http://www.amazon.com/The-Viazma-Catastrophe-1941-Disastrous/dp/1908916508

Nominated for the NYMAS Arthur Goodzeit Book Award 2013 This book describes one of the most terrible tragedies of the Second World War and the events preceding it. The horrible miscalculations made by the Stavka of the Soviet Supreme High Command and the Front commands led in October 1941 to the deaths and imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of their own people. Until recently, the magnitude of the defeats suffered by the Red Army at Viaz'ma and Briansk were simply kept hushed up. For the first time, in this book a full picture of the combat operations that led to this tragedy are laid out in detail, using previously unknown or little-used documents. The author was driven to write this book after his long years of fruitless search to learn what happened to his father Colonel N.I. Lopukhovsky, the commander of the 120th Howitzer Artillery Regiment, who disappeared together with his unit in the maelstrom of Operation Typhoon.

One of what could have been a great war movie was Passchenedaele. Once you get through a terrible love story and witness the combat scenes, it is one of the most realisitic shots of what World War 1 must have been like. You can actually watch the two main battle scenes on Youtube. The movie on the whole is ok, gives a good insight into Canadian humor during the end.

Vimy is also a great book covering the before, during, and after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Most countries other then Canada don't know much about it, but it was the first time Battle Procedure (the format in which a commander, from General to Master Corporal, forms, prepares and executes their plan of action). It is what most, if not all, countries use as their basis for orders today.

Two great novels about the experiences of a British tanker are Trigger Time and Bullet Magnet by Mike Flynn. The former covers his time in Afghanistan while the latter covers his entire career.

The Soviet Story (2008)

Documentary

https://youtu.be/oVZjyyAE-78

The Soviet Story is a 2008 documentary film about Soviet Communism and Soviet–German collaboration before 1941 written and directed by Edvīns Šnore and sponsored by the UEN Group in the European Parliament.

The film features interviews with western and Russian historians such as Norman Davies and Boris Sokolov, Russian writer Viktor Suvorov, Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky, members of the European Parliament and the participants, as well as survivors of Soviet terror.

Using these interviews together with historical footage and documents the film argues that there were close philosophical, political and organizational connections between the Nazi and Soviet systems before and during the early stages of World War II.[1] It highlights the Great Purge as well as the Great Famine, Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Katyn massacre, Gestapo-NKVD collaboration, Soviet mass deportations and medical experiments in the GULAG. The documentary goes on to argue that the successor states to Nazi Germany and the USSR differ in the sense that postwar Germany condemns the actions of Nazi Germany while the opinion in contemporary Russia is summarized by the quote of Vladimir Putin: "One needs to acknowledge, that the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century".

Kursk: The Battle of Prokhorovka

http://www.amazon.com/Kursk-Battle-Prokhorovka-Christopher-Lawrence/dp/0971385254/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1442421732&sr=1-1&keywords=Kursk%3A+The+Battle+of+Prokhorovka

List Price: $249.99

ISBN-13: 978-0971385252
ISBN-10: 0971385254

This the one book on Kursk that anyone interested in the battle must own, and if one must own only one book on the battle, this is that book! Nearly 1700 pages and oversized! The biggest single volume book on military history ever published? Due to the tremendous expense of publishing this book, it is being done in a small print run. This will be the only Cadillac version published. Kursk: The Battle of Prokhorovka is the first definitive account of the largest tank battle in history. This book is unique in that it draws upon in-depth research in both the German and Russian archival records. This was research that was begun in the 1990s, after the Soviet Union had fallen, when The Dupuy Institute was able to gain access to the Russian military archives. The book is built from the actual unit records from both sides, as opposed to the sometimes distorted narratives and legends that have grown up over the battle. It then compares and contrasts those records with the stories and interviews collected from veterans. It is an attempt to cover the entire range of fighting, from the strategic decisions, the operational art, to the tactics and the personal stories. It is a detailed description of the battle, a quantitative analysis of the battle and personal description of the battle as seen through the eyes of the participants. Over hundred German and Russian participants on both sides were interviewed exclusively for this book. It is a unique body of research that will not be replicated. This is a large book. This is because the amount of unique material collected on the battle was unparalleled, first as part of a U.S. Army funded research project and then as an extended book project. The book includes 29 fold-out maps, 94 maps in the text, 41 charts, graphs and diagrams, 166 tables, 194 statistical sheets covering each engagement, 100 separate sidebars of discussion, 66 German and Soviet commander biographies, and four photo sections with 289 photos. They are drawn from both German and Soviet sources. The Battle of Kursk was the largest armor battle in history. On 5 July 1943, three German panzer corps, under command of German General Erich von Manstein, tore into the Soviet fortified defenses south of Kursk. Driving back the Soviet Voronezh Front s desperate defense, under command of Soviet General Nikolai Vatutin and future Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev, the fight culminated in the famous tank battle at Prokhorovka. This book focuses on the German offensive in the south of the Kursk salient that was the high point of the Battle of Kursk. It addresses all units that fought in the battle, not just the Panther and Tiger tanks, not just the SS, not just the tank busting Stukas.

Sharps Book Series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(novel_series) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(novel_series))

This series consists of 24 novels all of which I have read. It is a great series of the British Empire military 1799 to 1821. It starts in the far east and makes its way to Europe and the battle of Waterloo wars. Great reads and series. Almost couldn't put the books down.

They did make a TV series out of it, but it is not very good, and I would say B rated at best. I did by all the DVDs just to watch them after reading all the books, and also I was very bored during deployment in Iraq LOL.

This is the largely unknown story of a small unit that played a vital delaying role that gave the US generals time to wake up about the Battle of the Bulge. This unit became the most decorated US platoon in WW2.

Movies:
On fury, I have not seen more than a couple of minutes, it but thanks to a former company I had the honour to speak with WWII veterans from both sides. None of them liked the movie as it was in their eye's "unrealistic". They showed me real footage which will be in my mind forever.

Eugene "Gene" Cernan was the last man to walk upon the surface of the Moon. He is one of only 12 human beings to have ever done so. I recommend this movie because its done well and shows a side of the NASA space program rarely, if ever, seen.

At the end of the movie, Cernan says the following: "I often tell young kids, and particularly my grand kids--don't ever count yourself out. You'll never know how good you are unless you try. Dream the impossible and go out an make it happen. I walked on the Moon. What can you do?"

Tigers In The Mud The Combat Career Of Otto Carius

An account of a Panzer commander of the Wehrmacht about his experiences.

World War II began with a metallic roar as the German Blitzkrieg raced across Europe, spearheaded by the most dreaded weapon of the 20th century: the Panzer. No German tank better represents that thundering power than the infamous Tiger, and Otto Carius was one of the most successful commanders to ever take a Tiger into battle, destroying well over 150 enemy tanks during his incredible career.

I've got rerun  "Rat Patrol" on Vegas TV. Watching now(watched as a kid) with a critical eye, it's hard to digest some of the action. Two jeeps being fired upon by tanks, machine guns mounted on armored personnel carries. They would have been buried in the desert after the third episode. But the series lasted a good while.

The Blitzkrieg Legend: The 1940 Campaign in the West

by Karl-Heinz Frieser

Here, for the first time in English, is an illuminating German perspective on the decisive blitzkrieg campaign. The account, written by the German historian Karl-Heinz Frieser and edited by American historian John T. Greenwood, provides the definitive explanation for Germany’s startling success and the equally surprising military collapse of France and Britain on the European continent in 1940. In a little over a month, Germany defeated the Allies in battle, a task that had not been achieved in four years of brutal fighting during World War I.

First published in 1995 as the official German history of the 1940 campaign, this book goes beyond standard explanations to show that the German victory was not inevitable and that French defeat was not preordained. Contrary to most accounts of the campaign, Frieser’s illustrates that the military systems of both Germany and France were solid and that their campaign plans were sound. The key to victory or defeat, Frieser argues, was the execution of operational plans―both preplanned and ad hoc―amid the eternal Clausewitzian combat factors of friction and the fog of war. He shows why, on the eve of the campaign, the British and French leaders had good cause to be confident and why many German generals were understandably concerned that disaster was looming for them.

This study explodes many of the myths concerning German blitzkrieg warfare and the planning for the 1940 campaign. Frieser’s groundbreaking interpretation of the topic has been the subject of discussion since the German edition first appeared. This English translation is published in cooperation with the Association of the United States Army.

Editorial Reviews
Review

“Karl-Heinz Frieser’s thorough research and first-rate analysis have demolished the myth of blitzkrieg and explained how the Germans achieved their miraculous success in May–June 1940. His important book adds considerably to our understanding of modern warfare.”

―BRIG. GEN. ROBERT A. DOUGHTY, U.S. ARMY (RET.) Head of the Department of History, West Point, from 1985-2005 author of Breaking Point: Sedan and the Fall of France, 1940

“The 1940 blitzkrieg in Western Europe was a key doctrinal turning point in modern warfare. But it was, as Colonel Frieser points out, neither seamless in execution nor widely agreed upon at various levels of command. This book, sure to be a classic of operational history, should also be a ‘must-read’ for those concerned with military innovation in time of war―such as the U.S. Army has experienced during the initial stages of Global War on Terrorism and particularly in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.”

―GENERAL GORDON R. SULLIVAN, U.S. ARMY (RET.), 32d Chief of Staff

“Well written and grounded in extensive archival research, Karl-Heinz Frieser’s book provides the best explanation so far of the German victory in 1940. This English translation has been carefully checked not only in factual details but also in the nuances of complex explanations. The numerous detailed maps, found nowhere else in the extensive literature of the 1940 campaign, will be especially valuable to those visiting the battlefields.”

―COL. WILLIAM T. BOWERS, USA (RET.) formerly on the staff of the Fourth Allied Tactical Air Force (NATO) in Germany

And the best part was the ruse worked! After the battle, the captured German panzerarmee general Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma told Montgomery that he had believed the allies had at least one more armoured division than they did, and that the attack would be in the south. Rommel's stand-in, General Georg Stumme, thought the attack would not begin for several weeks. German documents and prisoners of war confirmed that the German commanders had believed in the existence of the decoy unit, and had not anticipated the true avenue of attack. Bertram had succeeded in all its objectives.

On 11 November 1942, Winston Churchill announced victory at El Alamein in the House of Commons, London and praised the success of Operation Bertram: "By a marvellous system of camouflage, complete tactical surprise was achieved in the desert. The Xth Corps, which he had seen from the air exercising fifty miles in the rear, moved silently away in the night, but leaving an exact simulacrum of its tanks where it had been, and proceeded to its points of attack."

I watched Dunkirk the movie last night ... alone. The three other ladies in my home aren't exactly the war buff type like I (ahem) am.

My Top 32 Dunkirk Highlights:
1.   That French sand bag fortification - looks very cosy and secure
2.   Sound effects - loud, and at times shockingly jarring, just the way I like it
3.   Stukas dive bombing the men with sirens at full blast ... it's enough to drive a man insane
4.   Heinkel He 111's bomb run on the minesweeper
5.   Heinkel He 111's gunners' shots hitting the Spitfire
6.   Claustrophobic conditions below deck, prior to being sent to Davy Jones' locker
7.   U-Boat torpedo wake just below the surface
8.   The English channel, wavy, choppy, cold and dark
9.   Toast and jam, lots of it
10. Tea, lots of it
11. Harry Styles....hold on a second, which one was he? My daughters are fans of him. Me? Not a big fan of OD.
12. The boat cruise in the little ship steered by an old geezer wearing a knitted pullover that Wallace would wear
13. The little ships armada! I am sure in reality there were hundreds of them which could have been achieved
with CGI. Still the N number that C. Nolan showed us was still a sight to behold.
14. Spitfires zooming over the channel ... those Rolls Royce engines!
15. Spitfires zooming through the clouds ... lovely
16. Spitfire pilot's horizontal sun-glasses....were those the fashion back in the 1930s/1940s?
17. Spitfire spitting fire at the Me109s and He111
18. Spitfire being hand-cranked and landing on the beach at dusk
19. Panaromic sweeping camera angles and view of Dunkirk from up there
20. The beach ... it's wide and huge
21. The waves ... don't swim in there, it's cold and dangerous
22. Peter Jackson ... his name was in the credits for special effects
23. Sitting alone in the middle seat, third row from the back, in Hall5 with about 4 other persons.
I blame our Ministry of Education for removing World War II from our history books.
24. No gore (this after seeing Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw Ridge) ... must have been clean
entry and clean exit wounds every time by the German snipers. How efficient!
25. Bombs on the beach leaving no body parts, dismembered limbs or blood splatter ... keeps the beach nice and tidy
26. Finally seeing German troops in the dying seconds of the movie (is that a German helmet? Yes!)
27. No Adolf Hitler ... I've seen him too many times already on Youtube ranting about graphic cards, Senator
McCain's defeat in the US Presidential Election, Trump being elected President and about Downfall parodies
      being removed from Youtube
28. No Winston Churchill ... save him for the other up-coming movie
29. No Ben Affleck in a Spitfire
30. Finding out that Sir Michael Caine had a cameo voice role in the movie
31. Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan combining well to produce and direct this movie;
32. Finding out now only that Emma Thomas and Emma Thompson are two different persons.

Cheers

Since we're on the topic of the Spitfire, I thought I'did share this hour-long documentary.

Spitfire
 https://youtu.be/8JgyKO3WT28

I enjoyed watching this because it goes beyond showing you the history and the many variants of the plane. More than that, it shows you how the plane was created, with detailed ground crew maintenance procedures. There is even a detailed startup procedure with close-ups of the switches and gauges. You will also learn how the gunsight is operated by the pilot. Contains many narration-less and music-less sequences where it just focuses on the beauty of the Spitfire in flight. Plus the joy of heating the roar of the Merlin and Griffin engines!

If you have DCS Spitfire, this documentary will be an added joy.

They Shall Not Grow Old

How not to be in awe of what Peter Jackson and his team have done with technology? This is all about enriching culture, history and keeping memories alive before they are gone for good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrabKK9Bhds

How does a powerful computer fill in missing frames within a 100-year old film, and in so doing, produce realistic timing? How do you lip read a soldier's lips with accuracy? How does one reproduce the sounds of the war of a bygone era?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cSXfKSRKz4

A truly striking example of how technology can be used to enrich history for all present and future generations.

The basic assumptiom for this project was, that for generations of the digital age, it was hard to recognize the content of such old recordings as part of their own people´s history. The highly felt distance is caused on the old (like foreign) technique of black ´n white pictures and winamp speed of the movies. Last but not least, as Frankie described, the missing sounds completed the impression of alienation. All that can be considered to be suitable enough to undermine empathy, because it suggested more the presentation of a different mankind than the one of our ancestors.

The excellent transformation to coloured pictures, natural movement and the artificial generation of corresponding noise gives younger generations a better opportunity to identify with their forefathers and to better feel empathy in view of their tragedy facing daily death of industrial warfare.

I once watched a docu on TV about those operations.

I think I remember they brought like 80 kg armor piercing mines (liner) to infiltrade at the gun turrets.
A couple of years ago I visited a bunker system at the former Maginot Line - Schoenenbourg - so I have a certain imagination about the task to conquer such an underground city.

Midway (2019)

What I loved about the movie is that it made me THINK about:-

(1) The code breakers and their crucial contribution to the battle. The leading cryptographer, Joseph Rochefort, was accurately portrayed wearing a bathrobe and slippers. His life is worthy of a biopic of its own. If the lives of your countrymen depended on the accuracy of your deciphered text, would you sleep? The geeks and musicians employed at Hawaii’s Navy Intelligence Unit gave Nimitz the intelligence he needed to ambush the Kido Butai.
(2) The interior scenes and the tube firing procedure of the submarine USS Nautilus were engaging. Why was there a tail end Charlie cruiser steaming full speed to join up with the Kido Butai? It was busy hunting the Nautilus. McClusky’s bravery and hunch of going northwards to search for the Kido Butai, knowing full well that his Dauntlesses would not have enough fuel to return to the carrier, paid off when he saw the cruiser that pointed the way to the Japanese fleet.
(3) Doolittle raiders jumping into oblivion from their B-25B Mitchell bombers gave me the chills. Have you ever jumped out of a airplane in darkness, not knowing if you were over enemy or friendly territory?
(4) The Dauntless dive bombing scenes gave me a sense of the courage needed to maintain a dive in the face of murderous AAA and flak.
(5) The slaughter of VT-8 Squadron’s obsolete Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bombers, which paved the way for the dive bombers to deliver the killer blows at the right moment.
(6) The 1,400 Hawaii deckhands who patched the USS Yorktown in 72 hours to battle-ready shape, so that Nimitz could get every available resource to throw against the enemy.
(7) The real life people portrayed in the movie made me search online for more information on the Battle.

IMHO, here's the BEST Youtube video on the subject. Narrated by Craig L. Symonds, the author of the book titled "The Battle of Midway".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyFZ3cJRrcg

If you have to spend twenty minutes learning about the Battle of Midway, and you have time to watch only one Youtube video, this is the video to watch.

Graviteam Tactics: Stalemate on Donets DLC Book Release
Fri, January 19, 2024

We are pleased to announce the release of a companion book for the latest DLC “Stalemate on Donets”

The 190-page book contains translated operational documents (war diaries, orders, combat reports, and other primary sources) from the Red Army’s Izyum-Barvenkovo offensive operation, which had the goal to pin down and ultimately destroy the German Donbas grouping in the summer of 1943. These materials are complemented by translations of documents from the German formations and units opposing the Soviet offensive.

The book concentrates on the fighting that took place in the area southwest of Izyum at Semenovka village and westwards, in the 4th Guards Rifle Corps’ zone of advance: The introduction sets the stage for the operation from the perspective of the Soviet forces, followed by two chapters of translated Red Army documents dedicated to the units of the 4th Guards Rifle Corps and the 23rd Tank Corps (which was committed in the same sector later).

The German documents, presented in the second part of the book, include the AAR from the defending 40th Panzer Corps and a compilation of extracts from a series of documents that specifically covers the action at Semenovka in the sector of the Corps’ 257th Infantry Division. As the battle unfolded, the 17th Panzer Division and SS Panzer Grenadier Division “Wiking” were brought in as reinforcements, leading to the first combat deployment of the Estonian “Bataillon Narwa” in the vicinity of Semenovka village.

The translations are accompanied by several dozens of original maps and aerial photographs from the battle, adding a visual component to the experience.

We can confidently say that the book is the most comprehensive work on the subject to date. The Izyum-Barvenkovo operation is relatively unknown compared to its famous northern “neighbor” to begin with, and a deep dive into a sector barely 10 km wide makes the book even more special. As a reader, you have a front row seat as the events unfold from the perspective of each participating unit: preparation, action, reaction, and the aftermath. Reading through each side’s assessments of the engagement provides a unique insight into what separates success from failure in a complex offensive operation aiming to break through a well-prepared defense.
