Title: Empire in Arms the Napoleonic Wars of 1805 - 1815
Post by: pzgndr on June 13, 2016, 10:10:50 PM
FYI, I have recently gotten into code development with Marshall Ellis to continue development of Empires in Arms.  There is more information and a new v1.21.01 hotfix posted over at the Matrix Games forum.  If anyone has played this computer game version of an outstanding grand strategy Napoleonic Wars board game, I encourage you to check out the latest update and stand by for more.  Thanks.

BTW, I'm new to DOW and just registered for Schwerpunkt's new home here.  Please check out WWII-Europe.  A v1.08 update is in development for this outstanding WWII operational-level wargame.

Welcome to Dogs of War pzgndr.

Great news about EIA. It is about time it received some love. Please keep us informed about the progress. We love details :)

WWIIE is a hidden gem. Hopefully we can let it shine. Do not forget Middle East War 1948 - 2010. Lots of goodness there also.

Again welcome :)

Cool, thanks for reposting this information here!

I am continuing to work on a v1.21.02 update for a public beta package.  Hopefully I can wrap that up in July for an August release, and then an official Matrix Games release by end of summer.

I have posted a new v1.21.02 hotfix EXE at Matrix Games forum.  My plan is to wrap up a package for a new public beta installation by end of July, and then proceed to an official release by end of September.  After that, I'll start on a new version with more improvements.  Slowly but surely I am working off issues from the bug list.

hotfix for the hotfix, same version 1.21.02 for now.

As discussed, the default resolution is now 1366x768 and the combat screen is shifted higher to fit better on smaller screens. Shipbuilding and minor country builds appear to be working ok.

Again, I'd very much appreciate some feedback from players who try this on the v1.20.04 public beta. There are still a great many unresolved issues from before, but at least for the ones I think I have resolved it would be nice to hear from players confirm that they work and we're on the right track as we move towards a new public beta release. Thank you.

The saga continues.  Today I posted a v1.21.03 hotfix at Matrix Games that finally seems to resolve the AI builds and reinforcements issues, for both Major Power and minors and for land and naval factors.  New land corps units are being added but I still cannot seem to get the new fleet units to be placed.  It's been a long couple of months getting all this sorted out and working well.  Anyways, it is now up and players are welcomed to try it out and provide comments.  Enjoy the new wide-screen EIA game and somewhat more challenging computer opponent(s).

Next task this week is to prepare the public beta package for Matrix Games and get that moving.  Hopefully we'll get that out in October before the holiday release rush kicks in.

A long-overdue update.  Matrix is close to posting the v1.21.03 public beta update.  Assuming all goes well, we should have an official release in early 2017.  And then we can talk about moving forward with v1.22.   :)

This is the problem I have seen many times with Matrix. You need a "slot" for your release. If you miss it then you are pushed back further. I know an installer has to get made and tested etc. Still it can be annoying when you are a war-gamer that "needs" the patch...You know how it is....

Good luck with the implementation. I look forward to more updates.

Yes, this was finally posted!!  It's been 4 long years since the last official update and so many players have given up and moved on.  Hopefully folks will give this outstanding game yet another look and have their optimism restored.  It is still not perfect but noticeably improved.  Enjoy!

Well, FWIW, here's an observation to share.  After spending about 6 months getting into somebody else's code to find and fix some bugs and finally get things working better, and then another couple of months waiting for Matrix Games to finalize and post the public beta installer, the response has been a tad bit disappointing.  I got several kudos along the way that somebody was actually doing something, and I expected some of them to provide some feedback since the public beta has been out for a few weeks, and yet I did not expect such silence.  Granted, it is the holiday season and folks are probably playing with their newer and shinier toys, so perhaps it is still too soon to jump to any conclusions.  The good news is that I have not gotten any bad news about the update.  LOL

I share this simply as a data point for consideration.  We all get disappointed when our games get to be like 90-95% "there" and then development dies.  We continue to hold out hope that the developer returns or somebody else steps up to take on the project.  In some cases we've seen development resumed as with TOAW (Ralph Trickey), JTCS (Jason Pethro), and others.  The problem in our game industry is that this rarely happens enough and there just aren't many good solutions for resurrecting dead games that remain entombed under various copyright and other proprietary rights laws.  I don't think throwing source code to the wind hoping it will grow roots as an "open source" project somewhere is the right solution.  However, more encouragement should be offered to developers to allow other developers to continue projects.  In my case, I am not comfortable trying to develop game source code from scratch but I am persistent enough to run issues to ground and resolve them by editing existing source code.  It's doable, and others can do this also.

Ah well, I intend to keep at it and get this update officially released so that I can move on to another update.  I have the latest Embarcadero Berlin C++Builder and I've started working through compiler errors to port Empires in Arms into the Win7/8/10 world.  And I will continue to fix bugs and make improvements.  Cuz, that's the kind of guy I am.  Onward!

Keep at it pzgndr.

I think some people get fed up with waiting for a fix or an update. It can get to the point where the abandon the game and move on. The people who are deeply interested or passionate about the game will remain.....This can be a small number if it is a niche game.

In today's age of Steam & regular sales people tend to discard games at a greater rate.

I appreciate your efforts.

New v1.21.04 Hotfix for Public

Hello, the public beta installer appears to be fine and folks are able to play. I've fixed a few issues related to sieges and blockades, and made a few other little enhancements. Unless there are some showstoppers with PBEM that I need to look at, I'd like to move towards an official game update using v1.21.04. There are still plenty of bugs on the list, but I'd like to lock this down and get a final package to Matrix.

I suspect a lot of players are holding off trying these hotfixes and public betas, waiting instead for an official release patch. Once that happens, we should get some more players back and more feedback about going forward. Or arguments, whatever.

Below is a list of latest improvements. Please save a copy of the v1.21.03 EXE and paste the attached v1.21.04 EXE into your game folder. Let me know if sieges and blockades are better. Thanks.

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.21.04
=============================================
- 0000541: [Rules Deviation] Incorrect interpretation of separate peace in the game - resolved.
- 0000576: [Game Bug] Enemy Depot in City blocks occupation - resolved.
- 0000646: [Game Enhancement] AAR battle marker - closed.
- 0000759: [Game Enhancement] Instead of an AAR battle marker, simply indicate number of factors involved in a battle in the log - resolved.
- 0000811: [Game Bug] Forces in city and out of city somehow switched - resolved.
- Game bug with port guns firing without enemy garrison present - resolved.
- Game bug with naval attack upon enemy fleets in a blockade box - resolved.
- Added political shading on/off toggle for main map based on mini-map selection.
- Added additional checks for besieged cities using sea supply to verify no blockades.

I think we are getting closer to an official update?  A group is starting a PBEM game so I want to wait for some feedback on whether PBEM still works OK or if I need to fix something that I may have broken along the way.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I managed to successfully tweak the AI last night to stop Britain AI from making frivolous amphibious invasions into France and Holland.  Intuitively I could think of blocking Britain and Russia from invading France and Holland prior to 1813, but making it happen in the code while still allowing invasions of French-controlled Sweden or Denmark was frustrating me all weekend. It appears to work OK and I can further tweak it as needed.  But for now, this is a significant improvement for Britain AI since it won't be losing precious forces and needlessly giving up PPs to France.

I really would like to wrap this up and be done with v1.21.  Then I can do the grunt work to port the code to the latest Embarcadero Berlin C++Builder compiler and move ahead with the next version.

New UPDATED v1.21.04 Hotfix for Public Beta

I am posting an updated v1.21.04 as a pre-release candidate. Based on comments received from a pbem game, I think the path problem may be resolved now. At least, I was able to recreate the error before the fix and now it seems OK. This needs verification by the pbem game team.

Also included in the zip are two updated .ged files for the \Data\databases directory to correct map data bugs. Please copy the new EXE into the main game directory and the other two files into the sub-directory.

One minor graphics glitch I am working on is transfer of unit factors during reinforcement phase. Land unit images appear fine but naval fleet images and names are not appearing on the selection menu for some odd reason. You are still able to click where the icon should be to select a fleet and then transfer factors normally with images, so this is not a game stopper. I will continue to investigate this.

If the pbem game works ok and there are no other burning issues to resolve, this should be close to final for official release. I will wait to hear back from the pbem game, or from any others trying a smaller group pbem test game. Thank you.

Update
17/03/17

Time for a quick update.  Except for some PBEM issues, the public beta appears stable.  So I am going to proceed with preparing the package for making v1.21.04 an official update.  I should get that to Matrix next week and hopefully it we'll get it released in early April sometime.

I want to get on with migrating the code to the new compiler so that hopefully the game runs better under Windows 10 and I can resolve those PBEM issues and other data issues.  And get on with more bug fixes and game enhancements.

NEW: State of the Game and Future Plans as of June 2017

Posted by: pzgndr 22/06/17

Hello, it's been a year since I posted [link=http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4096913]State of the Game and Future Plans as of June 2016[/link].  A year ago I set out with some ambitious goals:

Quote
The plan is to complete a v1.21 official release in 2016 to build upon the work already done for v1.20 and v1.21, and also to tackle some of the major bugs and several other minor issues. This should also include new setups for EiA v3.1 and EiH v4.0.

It took a bit longer to get the official release out, but v1.21.04 was finally released in April.  I think I largely succeeded in continuing development where Marshall Ellis left off with wide-screen implementation. Some notable improvements include:
- Numerous bug fixes
- AI enhancements
- Separate campaigns for both classic Empires in Arms and alternate Empires in Harm

For the past few months I have been struggling to migrate the game code to a new compiler.  Despite making some headway, I have determined that the challenges are greater than I anticipated.  So I have decided to end that effort and return to doing what worked for the past year.  At least the game runs in WinXP compatibility mode and should continue to do so for the foreseeable future under Windows 10.  I know there are some data issues with PBEM file transfers and other quirks in the game, and hopefully I can track these down and resolve them.

I had hoped that the official update would attract some players back.  This is still a great Napoleonic grand strategy wargame!  If you have played the latest v1.21.04 update, please share some feedback to let me and others know what you think.  Going forward, I'd like to continue doing what I was doing to work off issues from the old Mantis bug reports: bug fixes, AI improvements, game enhancements, and the 1812 scenario.  Resolving PBEM issues is a priority.  I have some other priorities in mind, but I'd like to hear from players.  What do you want to see done?

v1.22.00 beta for PBEM test

Linked below is v1.22.00 beta that addresses several PBEM and 3rd Party Combat issues.  I think I have tracked down and resolved the loan money issue, again, and hopefully resolved it for good.  I am still seeing some DOW issues in my internal playtesting but others in a 7-player PBEM game using v1.21.04 have not seen any problems.  The following is the changelog for this version:

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.22.00
=============================================
- 0000106: [Game Enhancement] Implement external combat option for naval battle – closed.
- 0000581: [UI Enhancement] Warning of extensive foraging losses – resolved, to provide more warnings for player confirmation.
- 0000619: [Game Bug] Cannot Specify a Surrender in 3rd Party Combat – closed, PPs are supposed to be awarded if corps or fortifications are involved.
- 0000670: [Game Bug] There is no 'draw but defender withdraws' option in 3rd Party Combat System – closed, only the attacker retreats in draw.
- 0000782: [PBEM Bug] Diplomacy Phase messages – resolved?
- 0000817: [PBEM Bug] Awaiting battle results pop up message is confusing – resolved.
- 0000846: [Game Bug] Lend money to Major Power – resolved?
- 0000849: [Game Enhancement] Can't use 3rd Party Combat Resolution when running a blockade – closed, running blockade forces an immediate combat resolution during naval move not naval combat phase.
- 0000859: [PBEM Enhancement] Clearing PBEM Battle Folder – resolved?
- Restore phase skip for simultaneous diplomacy – resolved?
- Add prompts for PBEM phase skips if no reinforcements arriving or no naval forces – resolved.
- Cosmetic improvements for View Turn Income Summary readability – resolved.

Install EiANW.exe into your Empires in Arms game folder.
Install wgslabel.txt into your \Data\programtext folder.

I would greatly appreciate one or more PBEM playgroups to give this beta version a playtest and provide comments.  The updated files can be installed over the v1.21.04 official release, but I recommend a clean separate install as a beta version.  I'm really looking for feedback on the lending money between MPs, DOWs working, whether sim dip phase skips works, and the new messages for PBEM games.  This could be a 7-player game, or a smaller playgroup would be fine.  Just a quick PBEM game to get through 1 or 2 economic phases to see if things work.

If PBEM works OK, I'll wrap this up as an official hotfix while I continue to work on other issues for the next v1.22.xx official release.

New Patch Available v1.22.02 Beta

Hi Everyone,

We have a new update available for Empires in Arms! It is available to download from both the Members and public areas:

Members Area Download (https://www.matrixgames.com/members/privatedl.asp?gid=285)

Public Area Download (http://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/EmpiresInArms/EmpiresinArms-UpdateComp-v1.22.02%20Beta.zip)

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR V1.22.02: The v1.21.04 version introduced new data files and setup files for the 1805 Grand Campaign.  During this transition, older games likely will not work.  Zipped backup files for old data files and setups were added, but players should also backup any custom data files and setups from prior versions.  Renaming the old eianw001.ged and eianw001.tpj files to some other number (e.g., 011) may work and may allow older games in progress to continue.   However, players are strongly advised to install a new and separate version of the game and upgrade to v1.22.02.  Please do not use data file numbers 003 and 004, as these are being reserved for future data files for the 1812 Grand Campaign.

Version 1.22.02
0000111: [UI Enhancement] Need a warning if Free State economic phases are not actioned – resolved.
0000152: [AI Enhancement] AI vs. AI combat now trivial / change to chits   assigned – resolved.
0000658: [tweak UI Bug] In 'hot seat' game, "Talk to AI Allies" lists HUMAN allies, too – resolved.
0000700: [Game Enhancement] Make transfer of money to minor states automatic – closed, leave as is.
0000788: [Rules Deviation] Implement Forced Naval Retreat Rule - resolved, with exception for light ships defending in port attack.
0000846: [Game Bug] Lend money to Major Power – improvements made, but problem not resolved.
0000864: [Game Bug] Pursuit less than 1 column (no pursuit) posts up a pursuit screen - resolved.
0000865: [Game Bug] River penalty in battle applies for any corps crossing, rather than all corps attacking across a river - resolved.
Add checks to prevent placing depot inside a besieged and blockaded port city – resolved.

Happy Gaming!

Known Issues
Upgrading from 1.00 to versions 1.08.07 and beyond should be comprehensive and should not require any special upgrade methods to be utilized.

Upgrading an existing game while battle files are in the \Battles directory may cause unit location problems. Please delete files in your \Battles directory (after completing your battles) before upgrading.

Upgrading may cause intermittent font issues. This may look like you are missing text/buttons. To remedy this, please REBOOT after loading a patch!

Pressing a key to skip the Matrix movie from playing may not always work, depending on the machines video card buffer size.

There may be some issues with Microsoft Vista/Win7 (Screen sizing errors, game not running, etc.) and if you do see any difficulties then try the following:
1. Right click on the EiANW.exe file
2. Click properties
3. Click the compatibility tab
4. Check off the compatibility mode and then switch to something other than Vista (e.g., Windows XP Service Pack 3).

We have also found that Win7/Vista handles the Load Setups/Load Saved Game dialog boxes differently and may require manual navigation to proper directories. We are looking to fix this in a future release for Win7/8/10 compatibility.

UNITS (differences from computer game, taken original data):
- No switzerland corp as original EIA
- No extra garrison factor (minors with one less factor or without factors).
- No Egypt fleet (is optional,i will make a version full of optional, this is the "Original one").
- France X,XI,XII corps have only 1C, not two
- Leaders with original statistics (Examples: Ney 241, Wellington 553..)

Changes from EIH MAP

PROVINCES (to let as similar as posible to original):

Major Powers

Prussia:
- S Pomerania is part of Pomerania (Prussia). Straslund City erased. Stettin is 2/3/50 port
- Danzig is part of West Prussia. Neither Danzig nor West Prussia are Poland provinces

Russia:
- White Rusia is not a Polish province is 5-3 not 5-2
- No Volthynia province, now is part of Lithuania 5-2
- Astrakhan is a 8-3 province
- Novgorod is a 7-4 province
- Ukraine is a 10-8 province
- Crimea is a 5-1 province
- Georgia is a 2-0 home provincia No chechnya, no circassia, no anapa city
- Don & Caucacus & Novorrusia aren't provinces now, their areas belong to astrakhan, crimea and moscow
- Cossacks provinces are now: Georgia, Crimea, Astrakhan

Austria:
East Hungary & West Hungary is one single Austrian Province : Hungary 15-5
Austria in original has a home province called Illyria 4-1 which is Carinthia+Dalmatia. To simulate it, Carinthia is a 4-1 province with the area of Dalmatia (it can be part of kingdom of italy). City of Ragusa erased.

Turkey:
Albania is 1-0 not 1-1
Greece is 1-0 not 1-1

Bessarabia: Khotin city Erased. Ismail is capital
No Imertia & Kuthais city Erased -> Aras belongs to Georgia& Armenia
No trebizond, part of Armenia
No Persia, part of Armenia

Minors:

Central Europe:
- Holstein & Hamburg are Denmark. Kiel City erased. Hamburg is a 3/4/70 port
- Hanover is a 5/2 minor made of Hanover, Munster and Oldenburg. Bremen & Stade Cities Erased.
I maintain Munster instead of Minden (same stats and less painting on the map)
- Saxony is a 6/3 minor and includes Lausitz.
- Hesse is a 5/2 minor and includes Gottingen. Gottingen city is erased.
- Julich is maintained without changes (is Kleves in EIA). Same stats. (To avoid painting in the map)
- Berg is a 3/1 minor and includes Nassau. Capital is Frankfurt. Dusseldorf City maintained instead of original Wesel.
- Palatinate is a 4/1 minor
- Flanders is a 10/3 minor. Includes liege and luxemburg. Liege city erased (could choose from liege or luxemburg, but in original game liege was in a 4 forest area, same as luxemburg, selected this, same stats)
- Thuringia is 3/1 Minor. Incluses Thuringia and Wurzburg (Duchies in EIA). Wurttemburg City erased.
- Bavaria is 6/4 Minor. Includes Ansbach.
- Baden is a 3/1 Minor Includes Breisgau. Karlsruhe city erased. Capital is freibourg
- Wurttemburg is a 4/2 Includes Swabia

Italy:
Piedmont is 6/2. Includes Savoy +Piedmont + Genoa. Chambery & Alessandria cities erased. Genoa is a 2/2/80 port, not 1/1
Lombardy 7/3 includes Lombardy + Parma.
Romagna is 4/2 includes Romagna + Modena

A bit difference from original. Genoa is misplaced in original to the right. It can be changed here, so Lombardy has no coast (no big problem)

Morale Fixes:
- Saxony is a Morale 2 inf.
- Cyrenaica is a 2 Morale Cav
- Syria is a Morale 1 inf.
- Tripolitania is a Morale 1 inf.
- Hanover is a 2 morale inf and cav

- Added British training on portugal and hanover (becomes 4 morale if under uk control, rules deviation: Not after passing 24 months... is inmediate)

Remember
Carinthia=Illyria
Julich=Kleves
Thuringia=Duchies

No switzerland corps..

Other decisions.
Prussia Corps have strategic 1 / tactical 1 until 1810 then tactical 2.. Let as 1/1

Some BUGS fixed:
- Al unused units are "erased" from BD. So these units won't be appearing on peace conditions, for example
- Minor Morale fixed applies now (was error in table as "venice" not venetia);

NOT POSSIBLE IN CONVERSION.
- Resizing poland: Must be patched in program.
- Kingdom of Westphalia or kingdom of Bavaria: Their provinces matched with C of Rhine and program behaviour is erratic when going from these to C of the Rhine. Must be patched in program.
- Bernadotte leader: Graphical glitches and erratic behaviour with minor leaders. Can't be possible without changes in program.
- Not initial multidistrict Sweden-Findand, Denmark-Norway, Naples-Sicily. Doesn't work with Kingdoms. I prefer kingdoms can be created.

Edit:
This version contains the V1.1 patch from 30/05/18

Original EIA in arms Scenario Mod V1.1

Hi!
I have been updated the EIA Patch (in attachment). It should be more rounded and allow Hanover and Portugal

V1.1 Additions/modifications

Morale issues
These morale was incorrect

New kingdoms for british training
(before this, morale bonus didn't work)

C of The Rhine Morale.
The corps of C Rhine in the EIA original retain their original morale value.
In the computer game, C of the Rhine corps must have the same morale.
I put the media morale for C of Rhine so their morale is 2.5 infantry, 3.5 cavalry, not 3/4

Fixes:

Any feedback is wellcome.
I have inmediate plans for EIH 4.0 pure mod.[/list]

Hotfix #2 for v1.22.02, Updated 6/3/2018
pzgndr -- 6/3/2018

"Unfortunately I introduced a problem in v1.22.02 that affected how the game determined if transports could reach a target, which then prevented DOWs against an overseas target within range. I have found and fixed this problem and preliminary testing appears good.

UPDATE 6/3/2018. I also previously introduced a problem in v1.21.01 that prevented the PBEM Admin menu from displaying buttons for moving units off/on map. I have found and fixed this problem and this updated hotfix restores the admin buttons and allows deletion of leaders as originally intended.

Attached is a hotfix EiANW.exe file to be installed in your game directory to replace the one in the official update. Hopefully this time there will not be any more surprises. If anyone finds any more issues, please let me know and I'll work on another hotfix if necessary."

NEW: State of the Game and Future Plans as of June 2018

By pzgndr: Empires in Arms Development Team

Well, it's been another year since I posted the NEW: State of the Game and Future Plans (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4303261) as of June 2017.

So far, v1.21.04 was released in April 2017, and v1.2202 was released in May 2018.  I had to release a couple of quick hotfixes for v1.22.02, but I think all is well now.  My plan last year was to continue to work off issues from the old Mantis bug reports: bug fixes, AI improvements, game enhancements, and the 1812 scenario.  Resolving PBEM issues was a priority.  Except for the 1812 scenario and resolution of the persistent loan money bug, I made good progress.  I think the PBEM issues are largely resolved now and we're seeing several PBEM games in progress again.

I have started work on v1.23 and have made some progress already.  Here are the updates so far:

Quote
Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.23.00
=============================================
- 0000100: [UI Enhancement] Better info on Unit Report screen. Show current/max factors – resolved.
- 0000151: [Rules Deviation] Add end-of-game manpower to VP total – resolved, as end-of-game log message.
- 0000245: [UI Enhancement] Sort Unit Report and show depots – closed, leave as is.
- 0000262: [UI Bug] Message wrong when loading fleet – resolved.
- 0000404: [UI Enhancement] Add a horizontal line through the victory point chart – closed.
- 0000425: [UI Enhancement] Game Log Readability – closed, several previous updates have improved game log information.
- 0000521: [Rules Deviation] Victory Rules not according to original game's intent and make coalitions much harder to maintain – resolved, manpower levels added as end-of-game log messages.
- 0000598: [Game Enhancement] Add column to text report that lists the orders given to each unit and other standing order questions – resolved.
- 0000652: [UI Enhancement] Show current manpower and revenue for other nations when the "show selected nation" button is used – resolved.
- 0000653: [UI Enhancement] Display Prussian saved manpower – resolved.
- 0000718: [Game Enhancement] Game should provide warning text box when corps are halted by insurrection corps placement – resolved, also added warnings to set insurrection areas and when insurrection corps ready.
- 0000754: [Game Enhancement] VP totals for other powers hard to estimate – resolved.
- 0000765: [Game Enhancement] Naval pursuit arrows are hard to read, use signal flags from Nelson at Trafalgar "engage enemy more closely" instead – resolved, increased font size.
- 0000863: [UI Enhancement] User Preferences, set under Options on the intro screen, seem to attach to the save game files – closed, comments added to PBEM game setup instructions.

Lately I have been working on the 1812 scenarios and I have the classic EIA and alternate EIH campaigns built.  The current snag is setup of French forces, particularly minor corps to be setup in Poland; e.g., the Venetian corps cannot be placed in the Thorn area, but they can be placed elsewhere.  Also, the starting VPs for AI players are not showing up, but they show up for all human players.  It's odd, and I am struggling to track down and fix these problems, and it will require code updates.  Beyond that, there are a couple of other game/editor issues I'd like to tackle to allow other mod work.  Daniel Amieiro has highlighted several data file issues that require code changes, so I will see what I can do.

Alright, the other two major areas of effort will be: 1) bug fixes and improvements for loaned units and AI allied operations (with a goal to making the AI allies more cooperative), and 2) enhancement of the surrender code to allow additional separate peace options.  And I will continue to work off other issues as I can.  I'd like to shoot for getting another official update released later this year.  That's the plan.  We'll see how it goes.

I am hopeful that more players will consider/re-consider the Empires in Arms computer version as it continues to improve.  The boardgame was highly regarded as a grand strategic wargame of the Napoleonic Wars.  The scale and scope is just right, the diplomatic interactions between PBEM players is just right, and many/most of the issues that frustrated players during the early years of the computer game have been resolved.  It's a game, it's a fun game, and whenever Matrix has a sale going on it can be an easily affordable purchase.  In full disclosure, I am not making any money off this myself; this is a volunteer hobby project for me, sorta like me versus the damned C++Builder compiler to see who wins...  LOL  :FrenchFlag

Money sending bug fixed?

Seems so  :thumbsup

Update from pzgndr 03/08/18

"I got some good news today that loan money now appears to be working as intended, in the latest official release v1.22.02 with the hotfix. In a pbem game that I'm in, I tried sending $1 to each of my allies and it worked. So we have tried to expand this test for everyone in our game and try it in another game. In the other game, all money loans appear to have worked fine.

This has been a very frustrating bug to resolve. Basically the resolution was to 'flip' the loan money array variable. Instead of passing a +$ variable for receiver.sender during the sender's sim dip phase, it is now a -$ variable for sender.receiver. This keeps the sender's data within the sender's turn and avoids being corrupted. That was the idea. I just couldn't verify it using my hotseat pbem testing, but it appears to be working in actual games.

So. I will cautiously declare success and close out this persistent bug, unless I get any more reports of loan money not working. This has been a long-standing problem for pbem games, so it is really good news to report that this bug finally appears to be fixed. Score!"

Things are coming along. I have made edits to all of the data files (.ged and .tpj) for several reasons, and this may have an impact on current games, but hopefully the data files can remain stable after another comprehensive patch. Thereafter, I can make relatively simple updates with just the .exe for bug fixes, AI improvements, etc.

I have been stuck on the 1812 scenario setup for French forces, particularly for trying to add militia garrisons in Konigsberg, Posen, and Brandenburg. As a workaround, I intend to place the required militia in French depots in Warsaw and Posen, which should be close enough. French player can always move things around from there.

The other issue I intend to tackle is loaned unit behaviors, and I'll start another discussion thread about that. Certainly for allied operations in the late war, these issues should get resolved. With luck, I can wrap up these issues in the next couple of months and get out another comprehensive update later this year. I'd like to do more, but like I said above if we can get out another comprehensive patch then I can shotgun out more .exe updates later. That's the plan.

NEW: State of the Game and Future Plans as of 10/18/2018

Posted by the dev: pzgndr

I have an update, with some good news and bad news.

The good news is that I got the Bernadotte issue resolved, to remove the French leader in August 1810 and make the Swedish leader available in 1811. I wanted to get that done to be included in the data file updates for the .ged files. So, I have scrubbed the data files for all scenarios, 1805 and 1812, classic EIA and alternate EIH. The .tpj table files are also updated, one for EIA and one for EIH since there are morale and political differences. In the process of working on the 1812 scenarios, I found and fixed some things that also needed retroactive fixing in the 1805 scenarios. So I've done all that and I am pretty close to locking down the data files, hopefully to be the last time these will need updating.

The bad news is that all of the 1805 setups aren't working now and need to be rebuilt, plus I need to rebuild the 1812 setups that I had and finish the others. Just a lot of tedious work to do the get back to where I need to be to move forward with more bug fixes. Along these lines, I am no longer optimistic that games in progress might be able to continue with the new v1.23 update whenever it happens. Sorry. Just too many changes to the underlying data files. It may still be possible, but I doubt it.

Bottom line is that v1.23 will have a lot of nice improvements and that's something to look forward to!

Update 19/10/18
The bad news may not be too bad. Apparently I did something to the .ged files to prevent me from even rebuilding the setups, like View Available Counters did not display any counters? So I'm going back to previous versions that work and I will edit them again. It is tricky business, using both the scenario editor and hex editor to get everything updated. I will take this up again next week with a fresh start. Hopefully the edits will work well and the old setups will continue to work. I really was not looking forward to rebuilding 38 setups for the 1805 scenarios.

Update 25/10/18

Posted by the dev: pzgndr

I have another update, with good news. My re-edits of the .ged data files are successfully complete and all of the setups are still working. So I can now proceed to finishing the 1812 setups and then back to some code development.

This has been a tough exercise, and I proceeded step by step with saves along the way. I verified every single unit from the EIA v3.1 OOB and EIH v4.0 OOB for both the 1805 and 1812 scenarios; that's four times. EIA was mostly complete, but EIH had some errors and units that needed to be added (notably the Polish II corps and Guard corps that was reported to me). For EIH, I also added Bavaria II corps, Portugal II corps, Saxony II corps, Holland Lt Flt, Sweden Lt Flt, and Turkish Armenia corps. Persia now has three corps of 10 inf and 6 cav, still not exact but close enough. Most all minor countries that should have light fleet squadrons have at least one Lt Flt, again this should be close enough (I can't imagine these minor force pools being maxed out in actual games?).

Another error I noticed was some depots with TR and SR ratings, so I verified all depots are now correct. In working on the Swedish Bernadotte issue and getting the new counters correct, I also made corrections for several other errors for minor fleets (Hvy and Lt) and Turkish corps (inf and cav). All in all, I think we are near perfection now and can stabilize the data files. It remains to be seen if games in progress will be able to continue in v1.23, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. For now, I'm happy to be done with the data files and able to move forward. Onward!

1812 Campaign Update

Posted by the dev: pzgndr

Here's a quick update on the 1812 Campaign.  I have more or less finalized the data files and setups for all of the campaigns, 1805 and 1812, for both EIA classic and EIH alternate OOBs.

The good news is it all appears to work OK.  The not so good news is that the AI needs some serious attention.  I played the first three months as Austria to watch what all of the computer opponents did.  France consolidated forces into a massive stack, made an attack on Brest-Litovsk, and finally sent a small force into Russia to Minsk.  Russia consolidated forces at Kovno and then moved into Konigsberg.  Not exactly the clash of arms we would expect.

And here's the situation in Spain.  My initial playtests had Spain surrendering right away on the first turn, so I dug into Marshall's AI code for sue_for_peace and made some edits to essentially reduce several negative factors for Spain.  This keeps Spain in the game so that France does not immediately descend upon Lisbon with all forces, but further playtesting is needed to ensure Spain is not adversely affected by these adjustments.

I think I'm at a decent spot now to move onto other bug fixing and then come back to AI performance adjustments later.

State of the game Update 2/1/2019

Posted by the dev: pzgndr

Happy New Year. I did manage to resolve the 1812 setups and move on to bug fixing. However, the passing of my mother in late October and issues with my "other" gaming passion (i.e., my Advanced Third Reich mod for Strategic Command and glitches with the v1.16 beta) have been major distractions to me working on EIA the past couple of months.

The good news is that I fixed several more bugs and tackled the loaned unit issues, at least as far as initial coding is concerned. There were quite a few places in the code where I added checks for loaned units (major and minor), and whether the controlling nation (lendee) and old_nation (lender) are at war, as applicable. The bad news is that I am struggling through some playtesting and finding problems. So I am in troubleshooting mode trying to figure out what's wrong and what I may have introduced with my changes. This may take a while.

A new major distraction is that I am about to start a new job next week. So I don't know what my "free time" schedule will look like for the next few months and when I might be ready to submit a beta package to Matrix. I remain committed to working on EIA as I can and getting v1.23 released eventually. Please be patient. Thanks!

Empires in Arms v1.23.00 Beta Now Available!

Please see https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4692101 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4692101) for details. Besides numerous bug fixes, there are two important updates:
1. The 1812 Grand Campaign is included for both classic EIA and alternate EIH versions.
2. Comprehensive changes made to fix loaned corps/fleet issues.
This has taken me longer to wrap up than I planned on, but so be it. I think it has been worth the wait. I did also post some comments about the 1812 scenario, and some issues that need to be resolved to make it playable in the computer version.  Enjoy!

NEW: State of the Game and Future Plans as of September 2019

This week the v1.23.00 Beta was released for playtesting. This took longer than I wanted since the last official v1.22.02 update in April 2018, but I think it successfully resolves the 1812 scenarios and issues with loaned units. The 1812 scenarios are playable; however, I've noted two major issues with the loaned Austrian/Prussian corps and with the setup situation in Spain. I would greatly appreciate feedback on these two issues over the next couple of months before going final with another official update. Two major areas of effort that I wanted included in this next update were improvements to AI allied operations and enhancement of the surrender code to allow additional separate peace options. I will continue to work on these over the next couple of months, as well as a few other issues.

Since 2016 when I took on code development, progress has been steady. The old Mantis bug list had over 150 items, now up to about 174 with additional items added over the past couple of years. The v1.21.04 update in March 2017 resolved or closed out 39 items (22%), including significant AI enhancements and separate campaigns for classic Empires in Arms and alternate Empires in Harm. The v1.22.02 update in April 2018 resolved or closed out 48 items (27%), mostly bug fixes, AI improvements, game enhancements, and resolving PBEM issues. Several PBEM games were in progress, although not without occasional hiccups with an odd bug that swaps human players for AI at inopportune times, so there is still definitely interest in playing the game. This v1.23.00 beta resolves or closes out 38 items (22%), leaving about 49 items open. Most of these remaining items are either not reproducible and need to be closed, or fall into the "too hard" box and not likely to ever get resolved (e.g., Mantis #91 to add TCP/IP play).

So. If I can knock out the AI improvements and surrender code, plus maybe a dozen other items and make some acceptable compromise adjustments to the 1812 scenarios, that would be the ideal goal for the next official update. Please try the v1.23.00 Beta (players can make a separate install and still maintain v1.22.02) and provide feedback. Thanks. Enjoy!

v1.23.00 Beta, Update Issue
10/11/19

Hello all. I am aware of a few bugs with the v1.23.00 beta: 1) the pbem admin button not showing, 2) unloading units from ships not working, and 3) problems with placing depots during setup. I am working on fixes and should have an update available this coming weekend. The good news is that the installer seems fine and some pbem games are progressing. The problems are code related so an updated EXE will be easy to download and install.

Just posted the v1.23.01 Beta update at https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4700802 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4700802)

Attached is an update to the v1.23.00 beta that fixes a few bugs and adds a couple of new features I had already started on. Plus an update to the release notes for v1.23.00 regarding Bernadotte that did not get included.

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.23.01
=============================================
- PBEM Admin button not working in 1.23.00 - resolved.
- Unloading unit from fleet not working in 1.23.00 - resolved.
- Placing friendly supply source depots not working in 1.23.00 - resolved.
- Change "Allow Separate Peace" to "Deny Separate Peace" to make separate peace standard unless checked to deny it - resolved.
- Add France and Austria have a royal marriage (peace condition B.5) to setup for 1812 Grand Campaign - resolved.

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.23.00
=============================================
- Add Bernadotte as Swedish leader - resolved (see new rule 13.8.9).

I did also try to add checks in pbem games to verify player types (human or AI) when setting next player, but kept getting various errors during my pbem playtest games (e.g., a Portugal diplomacy turn being generated??). The pbem code is VERY finicky, as seen before with the persistent lend money bug that finally got resolved.

PLEASE update to v1.23.00 Beta first and then install the v1.23.01 Beta EXE file into the game directory to replace the v1.23.00 EXE. Very easy. IMPORTANT NOTE: "Allow Separate Peace" is changed to "Deny Separate Peace", so for games in progress players should recheck their settings.

I will proceed to work on some AI improvements and other enhancements. Surrender tweaks for "offer conditional" are on hold unless I hear players really want a change, but I am inclined to close out these Mantis issues. Lastly, the 1812 campaign setups "work" but have issues that we as a community need to discuss and resolve. Please see my other post and provide your ideas. Thanks!

Just posted another update v1.23.02 Beta at https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4715966 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4715966)

Attached is another update to the v1.23.00 beta that fixes a few more bugs. Plus an update to the release notes for v1.23.00 that did not get included.

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.23.02
=============================================
- Rebuild code file changes from v1.22.02 through v1.23.01 beta - resolved.
- Supply path not working more than 1 area from depot - resolved.
- Simultaneous diplomacy freezes (Waiting For MP Turns) with last player (Spain) - resolved.
- View Fleets On Anti-Piracy Missions screen not displaying - resolved.

Empires in Arms the Napoleonic Wars - 1.23.01
=============================================

=============================================
- Add Bernadotte as Swedish leader - resolved (see new rule 13.8.9).
- Allow loaned units to use home nation depots and allied units to use allied depots, where controlling player pays supply costs - resolved.

This was very challenging to find and fix (I think) the new problems with supply and pbem sim dip. I was concerned that the build may have been corrupted somehow, so I rebuilt the v1.23 changes to the last official version. If nothing else, I have a more solid build for debugging.

As before with the v1.23.01 update, PLEASE update to v1.23.00 Beta first and then install the v1.23.02 Beta EXE file into the game directory to replace the v1.23.00 EXE. Very easy. IMPORTANT NOTE: "Allow Separate Peace" is changed to "Deny Separate Peace", so for games in progress players should recheck their settings.

I will continue to work on some AI improvements and other enhancements. Better setups for France, Russia, and Spain would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I posted a v1.23.05 Beta Hotfix this morning at Matrix, same link at https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4784513 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4784513).

Quote
UPDATE 4/18/2020

After receiving reports of casualties not working in some cases (which is a major bug), I've been working with MapleLeaf and his intrepid pbem players to find and fix this bug and resolve a few other issues. The change log for v1.23.05 is updated with the following items:

- France and Great Britain not able to place corps and depots in Spain during setup phase of 1812 scenario - resolved.
- Battle casualties not being taken in some cases - resolved.
- Austrian Insurrection Corps ready to be placed message appearing during other player turns - resolved.
- Prisoners screen errors due to new leader ratings not working correctly - resolved and wgslabels.txt updated.

For the 1812 setup, France and Great Britain should comply with the scenario setup requirements. House Rules are in effect.

For the prisoners screen, I had a syntax error for printing the leader ratings. Once that was resolved the message length was too long with the additional (+2 PPs Gain For Release) message and a smaller font caused some display issues. So that additional message now appears as a popup when you hover over the Release Prisoners button, consistent with the other popups for the other buttons. Hence the update to the wgslabels.txt file included in the attached Hotfix zip. You should be able to extract the zip file contents into you EIA folder and the new file should go to \Data\programtext.

Alrighty, I trust this Hotfix update makes the v1.23.05 Beta playable. At least to the point of continuing PBEM games and starting some 1812 scenario games to generate feedback about the 1812 setup issues. I intend to review all of my notes for the v1.23.xx updates and settle on various back-burner issues to work on for v1.23.06 going into the home stretch for an official update. I'll add an update to the State of the Game later today or tomorrow.

Update Note: You do not need the earlier v1.23.05 Beta first; the Hotfix is a complete game EXE and the .txt file. So players can simply add the Hotfix. For new installations, make a clean install of the original game, update to the v1.23.00 Beta comprehensive patch, and then apply the v1.23.05 Beta Hotfix. (When I say clean install, please refer to previous guidance, as convoluted as it may be. Sorry.)

Attachment available at Matrix.

The v1.23.07 beta is now available. This is a comprehensive update. We'll run it as a public beta until the new year and then make it an official update. Please check it out if you own a copy of the Matrix Games PC version and see what you think. It is much MUCH improved now in many ways!

I posted a v1.23.08 Beta several weeks ago and a Hotfix #1 update yesterday. Information is at https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5003509&mpage=1&key=&#5014990 (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5003509&mpage=1&key=&#5014990). v1.23.08 implements A LOT of AI improvements for strategic advances and retreats as well as strategic redeployment of forces. The computer opponent is much more challenging now. Not brilliant, but better. The Hotfix #1 resolves several issues with PBEM games where some DOWs weren't happening and some game phases were being incorrectly skipped. Also, there was a problem with Spain getting through the diplomacy phase, either as pbem host or pbem client or AI player; that is all working well now.

If any players want to try a faster small-group pbem game with say 2-4 players and see how it goes, I'd appreciate any feedback you have as I turn my attention to resolving several minor bug issues and making a few more minor AI improvements for Hotfix #2 going into a release version. I really would like the v1.23.08 release to be fully supportive for PBEM games and as bug-free as possible. Some things may have to wait until later, but that's how it goes.

Some very good news to report today. It's been almost two years to the day since we released the v1.23.00 Beta, with many fits and starts along the way with eight version updates and more hotfixes than I care to count. But now we are finally here!

1. I tested the v1.23.08 installer package today and all appears fine. So the next official comprehensive patch should be posted soon. After that, the production team is going to expedite getting a remaster of the original installer out using v1.23.08, which means players can make a single download and single clean install without the patch hassles we've been dealing with for years.

2. Empires in Arms is on sale right now for the next few days for $9.60. If you've been on the fence about picking up this title, this is a bargain. See https://www.matrixgames.com/inventory/special (https://www.matrixgames.com/inventory/special) for details.

Very good news indeed. Enjoy!!
