SIM SKUNK WORKS is..

".. a group of experts simmers for many years acting into the flight simulation field. We are aircraft engineers, programmers, CAD specialists, experts in computer graphics, former real fighter pilots, both military and civilian aircrafts pilots, that have decided to pool their expertise to produce highest fidelity software for flight simulators."

Sim Skunk Works LOCKHEED FRF-104G "Zipper"

The single-place F-104G is a high-performance, all-weather, day and night fighter-bomber-interceptor powered by an axial-flow, turbojet engine with afterburner. The air-plane, built by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, is designed for high subsonic cruise and high supersonic combat speeds. The two-place TF-104G is used primarily as a pilot trainer. Notable features of the air-plane include extremely thin flight surfaces, short straight wings with negative dihedral, irreversible-hydraulically-powered flight controls, controllable horizontal stabilizer, engine inlet duct anti-icing, an anti-skid brake system, an automatic pitch control system, and on single-place aircraft a manoeuvring automatic pilot. The wings have leading edge and trailing edge flaps, and a boundary layer control system which is used in conjunction with the trailing edge flaps to reduce landing speeds. An upward ejection system is used for emergency escape. A drag chute is installed to reduce the landing roll and an arresting hook is available for bringing the aircraft to an emergency stop. Internal fuel cells and external fuel tanks may be serviced through a single-point pressure refuelling system. The photo reconnaissance version of the F-104G has three cameras installed in area of the shell-case stowage compartment and is referred to as the RF-104G.

The F-104G was an improved version of the C model built in the US under the Military Assistance Program and internationally by Consortium. The USAF never bought any G models; however, the aircraft was operated by the USAF for training of non-USAF pilots primarily from Germany.

The F-104 was the brainchild of the same man who would later design the world’s fastest plane, the SR-71 Blackbird. Clarence ‘Kelly’ Johnson

This Sim Skunk Works Sim Skunk Works LOCKHEED FRF-104G for P3D v4 provides highly detailed and frame-rate-friendly models with fully animated virtual cockpits in both single player and multiplayer versions. Both are fully compatible with TacPack and vACMI.

Almost all systems work as they do in the real-world aircraft and flight dynamics are 99% accurate. Features include Dynamic Drag Index System, NASARR R-21G radar, Litton LN-3 inertial navigator, dual timer bombing system and scenery of two air bases in Italy.

DDI (DYNAMIC DRAG INDEX)

The SSW F/RF-104G uses the Dynamic Drag Index concept; i.e. when you load/drop external loads not only is the GW changed but also the drag coefficient is affected and the model aerodynamics change accordingly. This is particularly important in the F-104 where external loads affect greatly the dynamic behaviour of the model.

Every specific model has its own internal layout with custom gauges (e.g. Dutch and German Zippers have their own altimeter etc.).

Also note that the internal layout will change into sub-versions depending on the ordnance you're carrying.

SOUND SET

A custom sound set has been developed from scratch, using live recording to give you a full immersion into the Zipper environment. If you are a Zipper fan,you will enjoy staying outside and 'playing' with the throttle, listening to it's unique voice.

WEAPONS ON MULTIPLAYER

A custom menu for each version (Fighter/Bomber,Interceptor,F/B 'Recce' and RF) gives the possibility to load a complete variety of weapons

Model is optimised for Multiplayer; it loads, fires/drops/launches AIM9, MK82/83/84, LAU-10/3, M117; weapon drop/blast and missile launch are visible both in single and multiplayer mode with no or negligible FSX server clogging (tested and verified with up to 10 players and 25 weapon, bandwidth load remains below 80 KBytes). vACMI is freely downloadable from SSW site.

DOCUMENTATION/OTHER

The model comes with complete docs including:
•   Three pilot checklists (normal, emergency, weapon procedures)
•   Zipper hints (a doc that help the pilot to use it effectively)
•   NASAR R15A simple user guide
•   Original 700-page Flight Manual in PDF format

SOLO/MULTIPLAYER CONSIDERATIONS (SOLO vs UBUNTU)

UBUNTU models are optimised for multiplayer environment; fuselage has less than 80,000 triangles, no bumps nor specular maps still maintaining an excellent graphical quality, it does not require great rendering resources and is frame rate friendly.

UBUNTU models can be used with more than 10 players with no or little frame drop; above 20 players frame rate is still acceptable on high end machines.

SOLO models can be still used in multiplayer as well, however they do have more complex fuselage, bump and specular maps. We suggest that you do not fly with more than 6 players with SOLO models. The installer let the user also install UBUNTU models or not.

I haven't had much time with it but I fly it with vACMI as it was designed specifically for that. It does work with Tacpack as well though.

I like it. It is sleek, fast and nimble. I think it is very well modelled. It comes with lots of documentation as well...delve deep my friend  :thumbsup

One thing about the F104 S and G versions is that the weight of fuel and load-out has a big affect on handling. You must consider this when you plan on manoeuvring after dropping a bomb(s) for example. It also has many systems modelled. The dev claims 99%, If I remember correctly.

I think it is a great aircraft and worth adding to your collection if you are interested in military planes of this era.

Don't forget there is an S version as well. They are also developing LOCKHEED TF-104 G

Working over the new single seater version,we discovered that...we have more or less nothing to invent more than we do normally. We try to raise the bar all the times that we release a new model, but this time it sounds a little bit...hard.

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/70815238_2121274544842752_9201884543106154496_n.png?_nc_cat=106&_nc_oc=AQn_c4AE1YmHc9DwbhTU2To4ufZu25wxIfnlSrRqEXh5BqhQ1CUcfS2HAVDnC2hxn6xrkCqyofDHTTdzRRS_S4Vq&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=de6a3c7d0de531d2e1b111985cbb28d6&oe=5DF1ECB9)

This is not an upgrade of the old model, but a new release built from scratch. According to this,it will be a standalone product. You can decide if buy a TF model standalone or a boundled TF+F/RF version,in the second case you will get a discount over the single seater version.

"One of the most tricky parts in painting is setting up proper reflections in a (theoretically) matte finishing. is not that easy because of the different painting during a long history (started with RAL coatings, finishing with FS) an the paint itself changes during weathering and use. So,it's very important to find the proper "thickness" of the light spot band during direct sun exposure."

"The number 1"

A little story about the 104's stenciling.

Since the white numbers on the front were applied locally on the Wing, the shape, thickness, roundness of the numbers were slightly different.
Here is an example, the.."number 1" of 53°Stormo (Wing) in Cameri, was something like a story by itself,if you compare it with some other examples.
Another difference that you can see here, the number "3" between 53-11 and 3-11,but there are a lot of examples and changes during 40 years of history.

F-104 (M.M. 6546)

This F-104 (M.M. 6546) never moved from the ground with this livery,it was just a nice static painting layout, made many years ago.

But yes,it's gorgeous.

Update: 03 Dec 2019

New F/RF TF 104 G develop continues in background, despite we had some delays due to familiar problems (Bonnie's wedding, some health problem now restored).

However do not expect any new stuff until spring 2020,

Here a footage of a test on special weapon drop at Capo Frasca, interior cockpit is still the old F/RF 104 G model used to speed up the development, new one will be remade from scratch.using last P3D PBR tecnologies.
