Title: ISM Group Build - Revell 1:72 Su-27 SM Flanker
Post by: JudgeDredd on December 31, 2015, 09:09:01 PM
Hi all

I'm doing a group build over at International Scale Modeller and I thought I would share my progress here for anyone interested in scale modelling. It'll likely be slow going as I've got 4 months to complete it - and I have other things pulling on my time.

I'm by no stretch of the imagination a great modeller - but I learn new techniques all the time and I pick up some great ideas from the site.

Anyway - I'll copy and paste my posts here.

Hi all.

Very nervous. First GB and I'm full of trepidation because I've seen the quality of the work from members around here. I'm a very, very amateur modeller who makes about 2 or 3 models a year...so I'll bring what I can to this build.

This will be an OOB (out of the box) build. No after market parts. That's partly because I'm a tight sod - but also, I like to make do with what I'm given.

Anyway - the subject matter...

The Revell 1:72 Su-27 SM Flanker

A small video of it's entertainment value from Youtube

And some information (from wiki)

Su-27
The Sukhoi Su-27 (Russian: Сухой Су-27) (NATO reporting name: Flanker) is a twin-engine super manoeuvrable fighter aircraft designed by Sukhoi. It was intended as a direct competitor for the large United States fourth-generation fighters such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle, with 3,530-kilometre (1,910 nmi) range, heavy aircraft ordnance, sophisticated avionics and high manoeuvrability. The Su-27 most often flies air supremacy missions, but its most modern variants are able to perform almost all aerial warfare operations. Complementing the smaller MiG-29, the Su-27 has its closest US counterpart in the F-15 Eagle.

The Su-27 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1985. The primary role was long range air defence against American SAC B-1B and B-52G/H bombers, protecting the Soviet coast from aircraft carriers and flying long range fighter escort for Soviet heavy bombers such as the Tu-95 "Bear", Tu-22M "Backfire" and Tu-160 "Blackjack".

There are several related developments of the Su-27 design. The Su-30 is a two-seat, dual-role fighter for all-weather, air-to-air and air-to-surface deep interdiction missions. The Su-33 'Flanker-D' is a naval fleet defence interceptor for use on aircraft carriers. Further versions include the side-by-side two-seat Su-34 'Fullback' strike/fighter-bomber variant, and the Su-35 'Flanker-E' improved air superiority and multi-role fighter. The Shenyang J-11 is a Chinese licence-built version of the Su-27.

This machine can perform the manoeuvre known as Pugachev's Cobra so beautifully shown in the video above.  The manoeuvre involves dynamic deceleration with briefly sustained level flight at a 120° angle of attack

Armament
It's armament for the Su-27 SM variant includes
1 × 30 mm GSh-30-1 cannon with 150 rounds
8 x R-77 advanced medium-range missile
6 x KAB-500KR and KAB-500L guided bombs
4 x Kh-29T/L air to surface missile
4 x Kh-31P/A anti-radar/ship missiles
4 x Kh-35 anti-ship missile

The Sprues

Lee's pet hate - sprues in one bag!

And each of the sprues - the detail isn't bad and there's virtually no flash - I mean almost ZERO flash. That's a good start.

The glass isn't amazing...

And the decals...there are lots and lots. I have to be honest, but the decals are always my least favourite part of building a model and made worse with modern aircraft having so many!

The Build Instructions
It doesn't look too difficult on the face of it...but it is Revell, so I expect there may be a few issues along the way

This is Great JD. I am really looking forward to this. Interesting subject matter.

When I did builds which required the graphics to be placed. I always got into trouble. It always ended up looking messy. Patience. A steady hand and washing up liquid helped.

Thanks for doing this.

Thanks Asid.

The ISM Group Build is "From Russia with Love" and anyone can enter anything created in Russia. Civilian vehicles, military, WWII, Modern, air, sea, land...it's all available. There's someone doing some "Napoleonic" era artillery figures

I happened to have this baby in my collection of unmade models (a modest 10 deep)...so I thought I would enter it.

There's also a Group Build later in the year called "I Heart Tamiya" - and anything Tamiya related can be entered - and I have a Chieftain tank in my stash for that one.

ISM give out prizes from their sponsors for the top 3 kit builds in each GB (Group Build) and SiG (Special Interest Group) and it's a great community for modellers.

If anyone s interested it's at http://www.intscalemodeller.com/

How about some close ups of the Chieftain tank. That is if you have opened the box.

I can't open that yet as it's an "new" build...in other words, cannot be seen to be started. I could, perhaps, open the box and show the sprues through  the plastic bags - but I can't open the plastic bags...it's da rule!

It is Tamiya...so it's possible that the sprues show up in individual bags and therefore available to view...I'll look tomorrow - it's late

I've started - yaaay!

This will be slow as the super fantastic 6 Nations is on for the next 6 weeks and I'll be drunk most weekends (as a Scot, it's the only way to get through it)

Anyway. I made a start before I head off to Murrayfield to watch Scotland take on the mighty Auld Enemy.

It seems rather strange, but I've started at step 21. The reason for doing so is because the glue needs to set. The step is putting the nose weight in.

So - step 21 is putting 10g of weight in the nose
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0830_zpspgneeddq.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0830_zpspgneeddq.jpg.html)

First, getting the nose off, I had a bit of sanding to do to get rid of the sprue connections.

For that I used UMP Coarse sanding stick rubbed very lightly and then some UMP Fine sanding stick to remove any impressions the coarse stick left.
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0828_zps8eolta2b.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0828_zps8eolta2b.jpg.html)
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0827_zpsnktg7tk9.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0827_zpsnktg7tk9.jpg.html)

Next, get some PVA into the nose and wipe it around. This was just a precaution measure to make sure the weight I was putting in would have something to bind to the side. I then put 9g of weight in using Liquid Gravity
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0835_zpswyo7dhoa.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0835_zpswyo7dhoa.jpg.html)
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0836_zpsn7zpza9b.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0836_zpsn7zpza9b.jpg.html)

I then topped up the nose cone with PVA glue which took the weight to 11g
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0837_zpszpozfwar.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0837_zpszpozfwar.jpg.html)

I was rather surprised at how much 10g actually was...I didn't think it was all going to fit in.

Hopefully, jumping ahead to this step is not an issue. I knew I had to put nose weight in and I knew it would have to set, so I decided to do it early.

And that's that. Sorry for getting your hopes up...I know there's not a lot here. But I do hope to get cracking in Feb and March (rugby aside).

Quick question. Why the nose weight?

I'm guessing the model is tail-heavy without the 10g for counter-balance when sitting on wheels

I would have thought that the kit could have been manufactured taking centre of gravity into consideration. At the least maybe provide some weight.

Hang it from the ceiling  :-*

A lot of non tail draggers require weight in the model. It's been a "thing" since modelling began as far as I can remember.

I recall making models as a kid and not knowing too much, never put anything in the nose and the nosewheel would always be up in the air.

It's down to the modeller to deal with the nose staying down - not the model company.

This is a tip I've heard about just recently. I've only built one non-tail dragger recently and that was the Me262 - which I used a chunk of BluTac for. Now I've found this Liquid Gravity things are looking easier. There's other things you can use as well, lead being the best (I think) giving the best weight to size ratio.

In case anyone is wondering what Liquid Gravity looks like once the PVA is settled....

Sorry progress is slow. It's a result of the 6 Nations on weekends I'm afraid.

It has been years since I made the last scale model and I completely forgot that you had to add weight on the nose to balance it properly. I might get back to it one day.

It's very relaxing

Ok - no huge great shakes on the building front.

I decided to get some pieces built and, as is normal with me, I started with the weapons as they have to be made and painted prior to being put on the machine anyway - so if I make them first, I can prime them with the rest of the aircraft

So I got the missiles made that this bad boy carries - and she carries plenty.

First off, there were no letters on the sprues to identify the sprues - which seemed odd as the instructions had a sprue letter-number combo. Thankfully, at the beginning of the instructions, there's a graphic that shows the sprue letters...so I stuck a piece of paper on the sprue to easily identify it
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0881_zps2jclkzbl.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG0881_zps2jclkzbl.jpg.html)

Next, the R27 ET

All the missiles had tags from cutting from the sprues...

...so they needed a bit of TLC (sanding with an UMP Fine sanding stick)

And the R77
From Wiki

And when cut off the sprue, I had to deal with this

And finally the Kh-31
From Wiki
The Kh-31 (Russian: Х-31; AS-17 'Krypton') is a Russian air-to-surface missile carried by aircraft such as the MiG-29 or Su-27. It is capable of Mach 3.5 and was the first supersonic anti-ship missile that could be launched by tactical aircraft. There are several variants, it is best known as an anti-radiation missile (ARM) but there are also anti-shipping and target drone versions. There has been talk of adapting it to make an "AWACS killer", a long-range air-to-air missile[/]

Very detailed build JD. Thank you.

I am enjoying this thread. It is surprising just how much time and effort goes into building a model to a high level.

Wait til your mrs finds out her pegs are missing......  :-*

Eagerly awaiting the next part :)

Thanks Asid. People enjoying the build as much as me is part of the fun.

Some models appear to be overly complicated and mainly down to "fiddly" little bits. Whether these are older kits from older moulds, I don't know.

There's a lot of little bits on this kit. I'm really hoping to do it justice.

As for the pegs - she got replacements - she's happy  :P

So slooooooooooow. Sorry. Just not enough time in the week.

First off, a bit of filler was required for the Kh-31 missiles
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200054_zpsd0viekup.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200054_zpsd0viekup.jpg.html)

Next, the cockpit. So I had bought a resin pit for this, but really didn't like the look of it. Whilst it was relatively detailed, it kind of looked, well...messy. Anyway, it came with a complete pit and seat but also with panels and a HUD for using with the stock pit...so I decided to use that.

This is the standard pit (detailed, eh?)
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200053_zpsmucjvpdw.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200053_zpsmucjvpdw.jpg.html)

This is the ejection seat (stock) built complete with "fiddly bits"
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200056_zpst9wqdwu2.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/P2200056_zpst9wqdwu2.jpg.html)

And this is the pit with the seat fitted and the resin panels. They were not a great fit, but I'm hoping the finish will be reasonable when painted...we'll see

Next is primer and painting the pit which I will probably do with the airbrush with a base colour and then touch up parts with a brush before dry brushing

Don't hold your breath. At this rate I'll be lucky to meet the April deadline!

Hi JD

Things like this need time. Doesn't help that you have a deadline though :(

Is it a sticker for the HUD?

Regards

The stock "hud" (for what it is) has a decal for it. But the hud that came with the resin kit is quite detailed...so I think I'll be using that.

re the deadline - this did start in January...so I only have myself to blame. It doesn't look like a very complicated build. Fiddly in parts and may need some filler here and there.

I often find the most common issue for me is what to paint and when. I'm still a real newbie with an airbrush so knowing what to do and when can confuse me at the moment. I think the common process is to paint the pit and undercarriage bays, fit the plane parts together and then paint, leaving landing gear until the end.

We'll see what I end up doing lol

This model has a good amount of details for this scale. I have never been a big fan of Revell's 1:72 scale models but maybe they have improved.

Good god...so long since I put this to the side.

In truth I've been worrying about painting - shades, issues with the airbrush etc, etc...but it's just sucked the life out the enjoyment...so I've decided "screw it" and just get the bugger done!

These were actually primed about 2 months ago

I've been fretting over the colour. The instructions say some sort of grey (mix of colours) for the cockpit, but I've seen pictures showing blue - so I was in turmoil over that. Then once I decided I was going to do the blue colour, I started worrying about how I was going to get the right blue...as it is, I still don't, but I'm going to have a trial tonight for the cockpit and behind the cockpit

(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1011_zpsqkfz3a3y.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1011_zpsqkfz3a3y.jpg.html)

The cockpit is the standard pit and the standard seat. I had bought resin (which I have never done before) but I thought the standard was better than the resin for both the pit and the seat.
I did use a couple of pieces of the resin for the side panels

lol - I've been fretting so much over the colour I decided sod it - I'm putting paint on.

As it happens, I found a colour in my Vallejo and just decided to use that - unblemished. I had trouble with Vallejo paints when I first got them...turns out it may well be my mixing technique. So I mixed the paint with thinner in a cup before putting it in the airbrush...didn't get a blockage.

This is it...no going back. I'm done.  I've never been a "rivet" guy anyway...close enough is generally what I aim for.

On second thoughts I think the blue is too blue. I'll be trying to mix a bit of green in it to see if I can get that "sea green" look

If not - onwards Christian Soldier!

The blue may be a close contender for the camo though...I'll keep it in mind

I think I've nailed it.

A mix of Tamiya paints - XF-23 (Light Blue), XF-71 (Cockpit Green) and a touch of X-14 (Sky Blue) - no measurements I'm afraid...I winged it.

What it was...

yeah - like she would LOVE to help me make some models!

This was much trickier than I thought. The pit (being 1/72) wasn't very detailed. I've done what I could. There was a couple of bits of after market resin I could put on the sides (though they had to be chopped and filed a bit to fit.

I also chucked some white tack on the seat to make it look like a cushion. I've put some dots of button colours etc - but it's all I've got really.

I didn't realise how bad my "hand shake" was until I started doing those wee details!

So I tried to put the top front part of the fuselage (the top comes in two parts...front section and rear section) and I could not for the life of me get the lugs to fit.

This had to be something to do with the front wheel well or the cockpit, because a dry fit of the top fuselage (both parts) fitted fine yesterday. It appeared to me it was the cockpit. The front wheel well had a lug at the rear - only one - and so that could not be out of place. Having said that, I don't think I did anything wrong with the cockpit either...I fitted it snug to the rear of the opening on the top fuselage as I could - as the instructions showed.

However, I did notice last night that the cockpit at the front was not making contact with the fuselage. This was because of the after-market hud I used. It was either ill fitting or I placed it slightly forward. Whatever the reason, this meant the cockpit was not making contact at the front with the fuselage.

(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1053_zps0jyk4so6.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1053_zps0jyk4so6.jpg.html)

This in turn would have a knock on effect of the cockpit sitting screwey and therefore the snug fit between the cockpit and the front wheel well (the cockpit sits in front of the well but it looks like it should be very snug) was knocked out.

So - I had to removed some plastic from the cockpit and the wheel well in order to allow them to fit.

Now - this was my first time using my rotary tool EVER. First bad move. Second bad move was having it on high speed when I made contact with the plastic to shave some off. I was caught by surprise at the amount of plastic it was removing...and now I have some holes in the back of the cockpit. However, it is the back of the cockpit, behind the seat and so unseen!!

Lesson learned, I turned down the speed and went considerably slower over the front part of the wheel well.

Both sanded down somewhat meant the top front section of the fuselage could meet successfully (although very snug) with the lower section. Nightmare avoided for the most part!

Top part of the fuselage is on!

It was a tough fit. Tight (due to my error above) and not a great deal of places where you can put pegs to hold it (sloping airframe).

But she's looking good I think. I do love the shape of this aircraft

Looking good JD.

I ALWAYS take my time. Do a dry fit. Read the de-structions BEFORE I commit with glue or fixings.

It will all be worth it when it is sitting on a stand on your mantelpiece  8)

Thanks Asid.

I did do a dry fit. There were certain things I couldn't dry fit test (like the hud and the cockpit)...and it was the poor setting of the hud that knocked the cockpit out I think.

But it's all good. She's starting to take shape. I love the lines of this baby.

Slowly but surely taking shape

This is a Revell kit and they are cheap for a reason. They are a bit more difficult to build (less lugs etc) and also can be a poor fit. For the most part, this has been ok, but there are some parts that have required considerably more glue and pressure than other sections.

There have been sections that have required some Tamiya Ultra Thin (thank god for that!) to be spread along the joins as you can see from some of the images

All that will be covered by paint anyway

lol - like my wife would buy me a kit!! She laid the law down the other day - "No more kits". Of course, I'm looking to flout that particular law!  ;D

I last year some time with another couple of models from a local store.

It's entirely possible I will not get this finished.

In fact, it's entirely possible I'm going to kick airbrushing to the kerb.

I went to use AK Xtreme Metal Gun Metal on the engine nacelles(?) and absolutely nothing was coming out. I turned up the air pressure to 30, 40 and 50 and eventually the tiniest amount was coming out...and then nothing again.

I really do not know what I'm doing wrong with airbrushing...but every time I go near it, I end up rage quitting.

For the record, I watched this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OnSqACPZRo
and the guy makes it look soooo simple. No mixing or thinning...just in the cup and go...and yet, here I am struggling again.

I used to think I was over thinking things. In fact, my previous airbrushing attempt (the cockpit etc) went quite well and I thought (using the "consistency of milk" theory people had told me about) that I had nailed it. But seriously - if this guy is putting the paint into his cup with no thinning and sprays so easily - then what am I overthinking? There really isn't anything to it.

Prior to trying the paint I had some thinner in the cup (a tiny amount) which I blew out until the air coming out was just air...so there was no blockage in the brush!

So - I am desparately sorry if this does not get completed. Time was short. I knew that. But I was fairly confident I could get it done as it would be all I was doing for the next week. Unfortunately, I hadn't taken into account my ridiculously recurring airbrushing issues!

I'm going to keep trying and I will probably get it done...but it depends on how this airbrush (or my technique or whatever the issue is) plays up.
Title: Re: ISM Group Build - Revell 1:72 Su-27 SM Flanker
Post by: JudgeDredd on April 22, 2016, 11:04:54 AM
And yet - I went back, stripped the airbrush and cleaned it, put it back together, turned down the air pressure to 20 again and poured neat AK Xtreme Metal in and it sprayed - easy peasy!

I just don't get it. I have to strip my airbrush almost every single time (at least down to removing the needle)...not only is it very time consuming, but it's also expensive - I think I use considerably more cleaner than most people!

Anyway...paint went on absolutely fine. I wonder if it was blowing the thinner through first of all that maybe helped congeal the paint or something.

These were annoying. There was a rather thick sprue in the middle of the engine nozzles
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1069_zpsaf8jboec.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1069_zpsaf8jboec.jpg.html)
Cutting them out left rather thick pieces to be cut and sanded.

And painting (after some rage!)

The insides were painted using AK Xtreme Metal Gun Metal
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1072_zpsm5kpqiix.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1072_zpsm5kpqiix.jpg.html)

And the outside section was painted using AK Xtreme Metal Steel
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1073_zpsxqjil55e.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1073_zpsxqjil55e.jpg.html)

When it sprayed, the AK Xtreme Metal paint is sublime looking.

Hi JD

It doesn't matter how long it takes to finish it. As long as YOU enjoy it.

Airbrushing is not as simple as it looks. Air pressure, mixture, thinners, cleaning, etc.... Practice definitely helps.

You are doing a good job. I am enjoying this post.

The metal finish looks really good.

Hang in there :)

Regards

Airbrushing, when it works, looks great and really adds to the models finish - however, it is proving a very frustrating technique for me at the minute.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've upgraded my airbrush twice. First time I had to as it was a really cheap piece of tat. The second time was to go for the normal handle and trigger Iwata TRN1 type. I'm absolutely certain there's nothing wrong with the compressor. I have checked the airflow several times and it seems to be constant.

It MUST be my mixing technique...must be.

Anyway - thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes a wee pick up helps.

These were such a pain to build. They came in 4 parts and the fit was very, very tricky

So the intakes seemed to have turned out ok in building - really difficult fit though and unclear instructions though.

They don't look too bad on

I was going to have the airbrake open, but 1. there's no detail to speak of there and 2. it's on the ground, so the likelihood of it being open are nil (unless being tested). But anyway, I choose to close it.

It's all taking so long. So many just "useless" bits in the kit. Sometimes I find a bit and think "why is that a separate moulding". But as I said before, it is an old kit. You can get new moulds with a lot of pieces, but they are generally easy to fit. This kit has a lot of parts and they are all quite difficult to put together.

It's definitely turning out to be a patience thing.

I've got a few more wee bits to do, then I'll be looking at spraying the whole model (less undercarriage/doors and weapons)

I'm concerned about the front undercarriage...it's very flimsy given the 10g of weight in the nose!

I was going to have the airbrake open, but 1. there's no detail to speak of there and 2. it's on the ground, so the likelihood of it being open are nil (unless being tested). But anyway, I choose to close it.
It looks good. The definition is clearly visible.

Maybe counter-balance the nose with extra weight in the tail? Or some kind of stand?

You better hope the Mrs doesn't have a party and needs those cocktail sticks  ;D

Looking good my friend. Patience is the key.

Thanks Asid

After doing all this tedious work on the wheels, I may well have to do this "wheels up" and stick it on a stand. The parts for the undercarriage doors are just too fiddly

This is what I mean. Rather than the door coming with the "latches" for connecting to the fuselage, you have two tiny little pieces that you have to glue to the door and THEN to the fuselage. It seems like it'll be a severe weak spot and the parts aren't sticking correctly.
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1108_zpsbagaaamg.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1108_zpsbagaaamg.jpg.html)

I'll keep on with it. I have to paint the fuselage before fitting these parts anyway and then I'll see what I'm going to do. The bits above are not even the most fiddly sections!!

I have put quite a bit of work into the wheels though. I think I've probably spent in excess of 2 hours just cutting, sanding, painting and fitting!

Yeah I'll give it a go. I prefer "wheels down" - but if I have to, I'll stick it on a stand.

Close...very close

Taped up and ready to be painted.

(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1125_zpsogxrfekm.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1125_zpsogxrfekm.jpg.html)

For these parts I used damp toilet paper. When damp there's no "dust" off it, it's quite malleable and you can pull it around to fit the hole. I used Tamiya 10mm tape on the intakes.
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1126_zps0izg9inm.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1126_zps0izg9inm.jpg.html)

And I've decided to give the cockpit sides and back a black coat instead of that blue (I think black was the correct colour anyway) hence I've left it uncovered

Got the primer down.

I had mixed results tonight. First, I mixed the Badger primer with thinner until I got the "milky consistency" talked about. Now, I know people say you shouldn't thin primer, but it clogs up my airbrush faster than a rainy day turning up in Glasgow. So I did thin it. But, it kind of clogged anyway.

Also, as it was thinned, the primer on the model looked "patchy". So, I put some fresh primer in and whacked the airbrush up to 40-50psi in the hope that the air blasting it out might stop it clogging...and, hey presto, it seemed to work.

So - primed and ready for painting

I'll be looking to paint tomorrow - at least the main colour with the coat of camo on Wednesday, clear coat on Thursday, decals on Friday with weapons and undercarriage being fitted and clear coat on Saturday. Cutting it very, very fine...but hopefully I will make it as Saturday is the deadline for the GB.

Thanks and true.

Once I put the camo blue on (and maybe grey if I am going to) and silver up the engines, give a coat of clear followed by the decals and another coat of clear and then (if I have time) some weathering and - well, you never know...it might be a gem in the rough.

I'll be doing camo nef. I'm not sure what yet, but whatever I have time for. I love the digital camo out there...but I'm not sure I have time for that, so it'll probably be something simple.

Masked the canopy
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1154_zpsaaiqye39.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1154_zpsaaiqye39.jpg.html)

Painted the canopy
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1156_zpses2elfoa.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1156_zpses2elfoa.jpg.html)

I also decided to change the colour of the top of the pit...so I had to mask that up
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1155_zps9szpqxlg.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1155_zps9szpqxlg.jpg.html)

Then I painted it with a mix of Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver, X-1 Black and FX-20 Medium Grey
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1157_zpsw9bi7xsq.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1157_zpsw9bi7xsq.jpg.html)

However, I thought it was a bit too "shiny", so I put some pure X-1 Black on it to take some zing out of it and this is how it's ended up
(http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q499/wmar1967/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1158_zpsgntrvwal.jpg) (http://s1160.photobucket.com/user/wmar1967/media/Models/Revell%20Su-27%20SM%20Flanker%201-72/IMAG1158_zpsgntrvwal.jpg.html)

Next step will be the camo and Klear (tomorrow) followed by metallic painting of the engine nozzles and more Klear on Friday followed by decals on Saturday and fitting all the wee pieces...and done...hopefully just in time. I presume I have until midnight on the 30th April (Saturday).......if not, oops.

If I ever do another one of these, I'll be starting considerably earlier.

After my paint scare yesterday, I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to regret this.

I'm going to try and go for a splinter look...nothing too elaborate.

I so hope the tape doesn't pull off the paint. Any ideas on how best to remove the tape? Would putting the model in a cool place before peeling off help? Or a hot place?

Looking good JD.

Removing the tape at the right time is important. If left to long then you could leave lines. Too early and it could smudge/bleed. I think when the paint is a little "tacky" may be best. It's your choice. I look forward to the result.

Have confidence :)

Thanks Asid

Well, that wasn't 100% successful.

So I have some bleed and also some overspray

I'm still relatively upbeat. I have some grey to add which, if placed tactically, can deal with the overspray and bleed....as long as I don't get more bleed.

I think the bleed occurred from me not wanting to press the tape on too hard in case I pulled the base paint off. The overspray was me thinking I could be more controlled about my spraying than I actually can be.

That part was actually the easy part because you just stick random bits of tape on. The next bit I will have to be very accurate with the tape where it meets the white (which will be quite a bit because of the bleed!!).

I think so.

It's only paint. You can fix it :)

This is a nightmare  :o

I've now got to cover the white "random shapes" with tape and I'm realising being so random has a very HUGE time cost to it!!

 :'(

I'm at work today and out to Captain America:Civil War tonight, so I'll be working late into tonight and tomorrow to try and get this finished

Hi JD

How about giving it a light sand? Concentrate on the masking lines. Then give it another coat? Wouldn't that save time and agro?

Hang in there my friend :)

Unfortunately, the blue that is down is a "one off"...I had to mix it and so I have no more. I had enough for the extra wee bits and the fuselage and canopy.

I'll have to do it the hard way. I already started this morning masking the white bits - but I'm cursing making it so broken as it's taking an age - and lots of snipping tape!

I've given up getting this done by the deadline of tomorrow night. I simply will not be able to do it.

That's a huge weight off my shoulders and now I can take my time with the camo and make it (hopefully) super cool - without rushing. I was in danger of having to put tape on pieces of paint that hadn't had enough time to seal to the model...this way I can give it the time required.

I will of course continue to show it's progress here.

That's to all who showed any interest...I hope you enjoyed the journey.

Hi JD

Take your time. You will enjoy it better. Who cares about the comp? It's good that the weight has been lifted.

Take your time. I look forward to the result.

Thank you again for taking the time to post your endeavours here.

Thank you :)

Ok - well, this model eventually got finished. I had to - I wasn't going to make anymore models until I finished it and I wasn't wanting to give up because I didn't want to set a precedent where if something got tough, I threw it away.

Anyway, it's finally finished - 1 year on from when it should've been finished.

Hi JD

I like it.

We do these things for fun so there should be no time limit....Unless you enter a competition  :director

Thanks for documenting your build. Warts and all.

What will your next build be?

Thanks Asid. It was a "competition" hence the time limit. I don't normally set time limits.

Next build is actually what I was working on prior to starting the Su-27. I don't normally start a model until I've finished - but the Su-27 was for a competition and so I dropped what I was working on - and as I hadn't finished the Su-27, I didn't go back to the one I had started.

See my new thread on Big Cats  :director
