Horace Vernet was the grandson of Claude-Joseph Vernet. He studied under his father Carle, also a painter. He exhibited at the Salon from 1812. From 1828 to 1835 he was Director of the French Academy in Rome. He enjoyed the patronage of the duc d'Orlans, later King Louis-Philippe, who commissioned, for example, several battle scenes.

On 6 November 1792 Dumouriez defeated the Austrians under the Duke of Saxe-Teschen and Clerfayt at Jemappes, near Mons. This led to the French occupation of Belgium.
