The Napoleonic Chain of Command: From Marshal to Corporal
When you look at a Napoleonic battle painting, you see Napoleon on his hill, telescope in hand, directing everything. The reality was infinitely more chaotic. An army of 80,000 men stretched for miles. The commander-in-chief only saw a fraction of the battlefield. Everything relied on a human chain for transmitting orders—fragile, slow, and often faulty.
The French System: Army Corps
Napoleon's greatest innovation wasn't a weapon or a formation. It was an organizational structure: the army corps.
Each corps (15,000 to 30,000 men) was a self-contained mini-army, with its infantry, cavalry, artillery, and staff. A marshal commanded it and could hold out alone for several hours.
This allowed the Grand Army to:
- March dispersed on multiple roads (faster, fewer supply problems)
- Concentrate quickly at the moment of battle
- React locally without waiting for the Emperor's orders
Napoleon said: "Any general who is not sure of his movements must remain on the defensive." But he also expected his marshals to take initiative. This is where things often went wrong.

1) SITUATION:
a) RED:
Red forces in mixed Mech Inf Btn, arrived the area of EIMKE - ELLERNDORF this night. We are expecting that they'll continue to move east on the next day, when the Regiment arrived. Until then, the red forces stay in defense alone these villages and holding the line.
b) BLUE:
After the fast attack of the red forces coming from the west, the TankBrig 12, reinforced with the 44th PansInf Btn from the netherlands, moved to the western area close to EBSTORF and get ready for a delay. Until the red forces seems not moving further to the east, the Brig Commander decided to move to the west with reinfocred Infantry Companies. Their task will be, to check the actual strength of the red forces in the area of EIMKE - ELLERNDORF, then take these villages and hold the area as long as possible. When the attack to the OBJ starts, the Btn commander requests for 2 HE-Smoke missions east of the OBJ. These artillery missions will remain for 5-6 minutes.
