About This Game
"The Withering" is a modern world post apocalyptic survival horror simulator. The story puts players in a world where a terrible viral infection wiped 90% of the population, which in return triggered a series of catastrophic events laying devastation on already dying world.

The gameplay consists of two elements, a turn based management and a real time action survival simulation. During the management gameplay players take control of a survivors camp and manage it's population by assigning different tasks, building up camp defenses, constructing building, managing upgrades / production and diplomacy. Players will also have to make decisions at random encounters and events, making each gameplay experience different. Defend your camp in a turn based tactical combat simulation from hordes of infected or bandit raids. Craft and equip your survivors with different kits to help them on their missions, or form raiding parties to take resources from other camps by force.

Player are also able to create and manage custom characters, and are able at any time leave their camp to explore the dying world. Taking control of their characters in a third person action / simulator to scavenge resources, materials and equipment that can be brought back to their camp and used in production / upgrades and fortification tasks. Random in world events and loot drops and different enemy types will make each play through different. Develop custom characters stats to increase melee and firearms skills as well as character physical performance by spending experience points earned during the real time action gameplay and running successful missions in the management gameplay.

Free Roam: Development update #1
26 JULY

Hello everybody,

I am super excited to let you know that the Free Roam development is going very well! These last few days were extremely productive, we have added several more locations to explore on the map and I am personally very happy with the internal testing results so far.

Before writing this I decided to do a little run around the map, to be exact just the main perimeter highway that circles it, started the stop watch on my phone and started sprinting.. By the time I have reached the point where I stared, the stop watch counter was 30:46.7 , It took me more than half an hour real life time just to run around the map on a main highway, without stopping at any location anytime. And I haven't gone in a middle of the map yet, just circled it.

One of the best things I have noticed, is that I never was "In the middle of nowhere" for more than a minute at a time. There was always something coming up on the horizon. Personally I like the concept of huge maps, but I don't really enjoy walking / running simulators. So I think we have nailed it in that aspect. The map is a very decent size, and you don't have to run for 15 minutes just to reach a site you want to scavenge or explore.

And this is just a quarter of the Utah state that we are planning to implement into the game for players to explore. And yes, then we will do the rest of the states..

I will be making a short video showing you a little bit of the gameplay on the new map and how the interface in the camp will change for deploying to real time action gameplay, sometime this week. As soon as I will get a chance to record it.

Thank you all for your support and feedback, you keep us inspired!

Free Roam: Development update #2
31 JULY   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

It's me again and I'm here to give you another quick update on the free roam development progress.

First I would like to let you know that we are making good progress and plan to have a free roam map available with our next update. It will not have all of the features implemented but players will be able to explore the map and visit all of the locations.

I know that I have promised to record a gameplay video and I fully intend to do that, we are getting so very close to releasing our new player controller that I wanted to include it in the video. I also promised to show you how the new deployment interface would look like:

The new "MAP" button on bottom right will open the North America region map from which players will be able to choose the place to travel.

Once the location is selected, players will be given some basic information of what is available. Such as number of towns and cities, missions, controlling faction, etc..

The blank tab on the left will hold player character portraits to select and the left tab will display a list of points of interest, like City of Woodsfield for example.

The new free roam map will feature new gameplay elements such as random encounters, where players will meet other survivors or engage in combat with bandits for resources and maybe save someone's life.

There will be two more missions accessible from the map, the Waterfront Liberation mission will have players fight for control of the clean water supply in the area. And the Factory Assault mission will put players into a thrilling challenge of taking back the old factory and it's resources from the bandits.

I will be posting new updates as soon as possible, showing the new map and it's features in action!

Thank you!

Worth the Wait
12 AUGUST   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

I know it's been a little quiet during the last week and I just wanted to let you all know where we stand.

We have thrown all of our efforts on a free roam gameplay development and I am happy to let you know that it will become available with our next update scheduled for next week!

As I mentioned before, not all of the features that I discussed in my previous announcement will be available, but you will be able to explore the map in full and visit all of the locations on it. We will then start implementing the rest of the features gradually on a weekly basis as usual.

The rest of the sites will still be available to visit too!

Thank you.

Update 1.0.31.2
22 AUGUST   - CROCHAN

Update 1.0.31.2 is now live!

In this update we are introducing the new Free Roam gameplay element as well as the new camp interface which will allow players to easily travel to existing sites and the new Free Roam map.

Utah State east
The new Utah State east Free Roam section featured in this update is available for exploration in full. The section is still a work in progress and that means that players might encounter some raw areas (flat landscapes for examples). However, most of the locations planned are already present on the section, with several more to be added in upcoming updates.

Currently there is no "Map" available and we plan to implement it in our next update along with additional navigation features such as highway signs and dynamic region names as it is present on St.Claire site. To help players navigate the new Free Roam section we recommend to stick to the main highway as it circles an entire section and is linked to all of the locations.

The section is yet to undergo optimization both performance and memory consumption wise. We plan to have most of the optimization implemented with our next update as well as adding additional options to the menu which will allow players more control over the terrain details and balance the performance vs quality even more.

This new gameplay element opens a doorway to a lot of new features that we want to add, including vehicles and faction missions. These features will be gradually added on a weekly basis updated.

Our lead programmer Oleksii Myrgulskyi and his team is currently working on a new feature that will allow us to dynamically manipulate the sections of the game world. This complex system will lay a foundation for the seamless open world section transition, allowing us to create much larger sections without consuming additional resources or causing an impact on performance.

New Interface
The new deployment interface has been implemented.

It is accessible from the Main Camp interface and it allows players to travel to all of the existing sites and the new Free Roam section.

Additional Information
This is the first major update we are releasing since the beginning of the Early Access and your feedback is very important to us. Please keep in mind that all of the features introduced are still being developed, and will be improved with upcoming updates. Players are strongly encouraged to report any issues or problems.

I am opening a new pinned discussion thread on the forum dedicated to the Free Roam gameplay. Please post your comments and finding there.

Thank you!

Free Roam: Development update # 3
30 AUGUST   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody, it's been another very busy week for us here and I would like to share a few very important things with you! In this announcement I will be talking about the Free Roam gameplay updates coming our way as well as a short term road map regarding the new features.

Free Roam overview

First I would like to thank you all for your feedback! You have been a great help and because of this active community we can now identify and improve the gameplay experience.

I would like to start with my personal observation and experience with the new Free Roam gameplay. During the last week I was heavily involved in breaking down the gameplay and reviewing the feedback from the community. And personally, I felt that the gameplay was lacking in several aspects. The free roam section map did not capture the feeling of the open space and was heavy on the machine resource consumption. The overall experience playing the free roam map did not deliver what we were aiming for and it was something I was not comfortable with!

We put our heads together, and worked even harder on improving both of these aspects of the gameplay and I am very happy to announce that we have made great progress!

The screenshots below will show you the newly developed Free Roam Utah State section:

We were able to create a map that captures the essence of the open world gameplay. Vast planes, mountains and forests now cover the land that is four times larger than the previously introduced section.

These new developments allowed us to invest even more details into the living world of the game. Each location (node) that is spread across a huge terrain will have additional sub nodes that will be governed by the location state.

The sub nodes will be randomly spawned in the area governed by the primary location (like the farm in the screenshots) and those sub nodes can vary between scavenging sites, bandit or survivor camps, resource drops, random events, missions and more..

Expanding Horizons
22 SEPTEMBER   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody,

First I would like to thank you all for your support and involvement in the project. Since the very first day of the Early Access release our community have been helping us in this enormous effort, and I am very happy to see how far we've come, and what we were able to achieve with our small team.

Even though only a fraction of the planned features and content have been developed there has been tremendous early access success and support from the community. We are an independent studio and have been privately funded so far which has helped us develop the game with the vision.

This is just the beginning and to complete the vision and accelerate the completion of the full release we need your support once again. We would really love to have The Withering continue to be community driven and build on the success that our mutual passion has created. The more support we receive the more independent we can stay and continue to listen to the community for more great ideas that keep you plugged into the development roadmap.

We are launching a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter, with a goal of raising funds to expand our team and accelerate the development of all of the new features that I was mentioning in my announcements.

New Camp Management Gameplay - Development Update #1
10 October - CrochaN
Overview

Hello everybody,

As I have mentioned before in my previous announcement and comments here on the community HUB, we are working on a brand new Camp Management gameplay functionality. The new gameplay will allow players to take control of the leader and visit the camp.

In this announcement I will be talking about some of the features that will be presented with this new gameplay, functionality that will become available shortly with our upcoming update, and the final vision of the camp management as we want it to be down the road.

Most of the heavy lifting is already behind us as we have expanded our Environment Manager system responsible for day / night cycle, visual and audio effects (and weather control in a near future), to operate in the turn based camp management gameplay. Below you can see the screen taken directly from the game engine editor as we are reconstructing the camp. There is not much to see, since the majority of work were done in code, but I still wanted to share these with you, so we all can be on the same page.

Upcoming features

In the next update players will be able to visit and explore the camp, all of the currently implemented features will be available in the new gameplay, with a possible exception of the defense gameplay elements as these will still need to undergo major restructuring.

The new camp will reflect all of the buildings, upgrades and survivor models. Which means that players will be able to see everything developed in the camp from sandbags defensive upgrades to the main radio tower building and all of it's levels.

Players will be able to gain access to the camp interface by interacting with NPCs and objects in the camp, advance phases and travel to Free Roam and Sites. As well as all of the other camp management functionality currently available.

Long term features and expansion

I would like to mention a few of the features and major changes that we are going to implement down the road in regards to the camp management gameplay. We are going to expand the building management system to increase the maximum levels of all buildings, add new buildings to the mix, such as Garage for example, where players will be able to manage their vehicles, upgrade and customize them.

The crafting system will be drastically changed, with much more recipes for both weapons and equipment as well as combining items together, for example combining several different medicine items will result in a medkit, and combining several of those with additional materials will result in medicine resources, and so on. Some of the crafting will become available during the real time action gameplay as well.

The camp population system will undergo major refinement, survivors will have their own personality traits and skills, and players will be able to assign lieutenants to oversee some of the tasks in the camp, for example an engineer can be assigned to the workshop and provide additional bonuses to production, etc..

The defense gameplay will be redesigned so players can fight to protect their camp in real time action combat.

Overall camp design will be changed, we want the camp to grow larger than 12 survivors, and as players will upgrade their camp it will look more and more like a small community town, with makeshift shelters and cargo container repurposed for homes.

It is a little bit early to dive in more details, but I will be posting additional updates as the development progresses!

Thank you!

Free Roam: Development update #3
25 DECEMBER   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

I know it's been quiet for a while, and I am very excited to announce that we are nearing a major update release!

We had a special team meeting this Friday where we were discussing the strategy for rolling out the major update as well as preliminary release date. The good news is we will be able to release the update in two phases. The first phase will include the new Free Roam map with all of the locations transferred from the previous Free Roam. This phase will also include the new Camp Management gameplay where players will be able to explore their camps with their leader characters. The new controller will also become a part of the update.

The first phase update is currently scheduled for roll out approximately two weeks from now on Jan 10th.

The second phase of the update will be the long awaited Multiplayer update. That will allow players to play in a Co-Op Multiplayer mode. Upon release the Multiplayer features will be limited to Missions only. And we plan to expand the functionality to Free Roam shortly after the second phase roll out scheduled for Jan 24th.

I will be posting development updates on a weekly basis at this point and share the new screens from the upcoming gameplay, as well as talk about the features in more details!

Happy Holidays everybody!
Crochan.

Community Announcements - CrochaN

Update 1.1.0.0 is going live soon!

The wait is finally over and we are happy to announce that our first part of the major update is about to go live! In this update we are introducing a lot of changes as well as new gameplay elements.

New Camp Management gameplay

The brand new Camp Management gameplay allows players to explore their survivors camp with their Leader character. Players are now able to walk around the camp and access all of the management features directly from the third person. The general management interface is also available to players, at anytime by pressing "O" on the keyboard.

We will be expanding the new camp management gameplay with additional features in our future updates, such as camp population, player characters and defense gameplay mechanics.

New Free Roam map

The new Free Roam map is also a part of this update. Players will now be able to explore the new Utah State map with all of the locations from the previous version of the free roam available.

*Important Information*

Due to the fact that a lot of changes were introduced with this update under the hood, players might encounter minor issues in this release. We are aware of most of them and are going to address them in our upcoming patches.

The new player controller will feel different than the previous version, and some of the functionality might not be as smooth. We are constantly working on improving this and plan to have a more polished version of the controller by the time of the Multiplayer release.

The new Free Roam map is also a work in progress and will be expanded with the new locations, missions and features such as reputation vendors and Factions gameplay elements in the future updates.

Please keep in mind that your feedback and bug reporting play a very important part in the development process. Players are strongly encouraged to report any issues they are encountering during the gameplay.

Thank you!

Update 1.1 Rollback
20 JANUARY   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

This announcement is going to be different from the rest of them, as it comes from me rather than CM Softworks Inc.

We are working on resolving the issues with the Steam repository merge as well as the bugs / issues that were reported by the community. It will take some time to sort them out and resolve the merge issue, so in the meantime we are going to roll back the changes to our previous stable build.

Unfortunately, not without consequences. Some of the progress data might be lost. Yes, it sucks but it's not the end of the world and Early Access means that sometimes $%&# happens.

The new 1.1 build will be available through the open beta and I will provide access to players who are willing to help with the testing.

Thank you all for quickly responding and providing us with the bug report and feedback on 1.1, it allowed us to gather and prioritize the issue resolution approach.

As for the rest of the noise that was echoing around the forum walls.. Please keep in mind that we are a small team of dedicated developers who actually care more about the game and it's community, than the number of copies sold.

Thanks.

Cloud Save
We are introducing the Steam Cloud save solution for The Withering with this update. Players game progress will now be saved to a file and synchronized to Steam Cloud. This will allow players to run the game on different machines and still gain access to the game progression.

Upcoming Changes

In our next patch that is scheduled for the end of this week we plan to fix the outstanding minor issues that were spotted during the testing phase and implement the brand new MiniMap feature.

Players will be able to easily locate nearby points of interest while roaming in the real time action game mode.

Quarantine Zone

We are currently working on rebuilding the infamous City of Woodsfield. The new Woodsfield will become a Quarantine Zone, where player skills will be put to the test, facing Elite enemies and new Elimination Missions.

The new Woodsfield will become a single Quarantine zone on a brand new map. The current city maps will be dismantled and reassembled as mission grounds. This will allow us to speed up the development progress and not waste any effort that was put into these maps.

The Withering 2.0
15 May - CrochaN

The Withering 2.0 Update is now live!

Personal announcement
Hello everybody! Oh, where to begin..? I guess I'll start from the beginning. When I originally introduced The Withering to the world through Steam Greenlight program, I had a vision, I wanted the game to bring something new to the genre. Being a gamer and a fan of the survival games, I wanted to expand the gameplay elements that I felt were lacking in many games. While we achieved a lot during the last year, I still did not feel like we are in the place I have envisioned.

During the last couple of weeks, I have personally did a lot of heavy lifting in game design, gameplay and features. And would like to share this experience with you as well as provide you with a new 2.0 update for the beta branch. This update will change the game in a lot of ways and introduce to you, the players, all the new features that I personally think will make The Withering great.

Update Information
The 2.0 update is focused on all of the new features we are introducing with it, please keep in mind that this is a work in progress and some of the gameplay elements are not yet implemented with this first release. The weapon systems are undergoing drastic changes to fit into the new robust stats system and are not included with this release. However, players will be able to try all of the cool new features listed in details below.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Due to the nature of this update, players might experience an issue where the player character will not properly spawn during the first time running the game. In this case, simply enable the mouse pointer by pressing Left Alt and close the game from the Menu bar icon on top right. Restart the game, and it should resolve the issue.

The Camp
The 2.0 introducing a brand new camp gameplay with deep and fluent management system that is no longer a separate entity. In 2.0 players will dynamically move between the Camp and the rest of the world, while sharing the Camp features amongst all of the characters.

The Withering 2.0 - Melee Combat development update
23 MAY   - CROCHAN

Melee Combat
Hello everybody! As I mentioned before, last week I was working on implementing a new melee combat mechanic into The Withering 2.0, and today I would like to share the development progress with you as well as actually show you how this new functionality works with a demonstration video that can viewed by clicking on the link below:

WATCH THE MELEE DEMONSTRATION VIDEO

https://youtu.be/4ao5WEnmkYg

The new melee combat controller functionality allows players to engage enemies in a fluent real time melee combat with brand new amazing features like enemy locking system, dodging, blocking, a counter system, quick and heavy melee attack combos, and more!

I am currently working on combining the unarmed and melee controllers to work seamlessly together and allow players to dynamically switch between melee and unarmed controls with a single press of a button.

I also plan to release an update for the 2.0 by the end of this week and let you test this new functionality yourselves.

I'm sure you will have questions regarding the new melee controller and it's features, please feel free to discuss them in the thread provided in the Feedback section below.

The Withering 2.0.0.2 Update
28 May - CrochaN

The Withering 2.0.0.2 update is now live!

This update focuses on bringing the melee combat gameplay into the 2.0. Players will now be able to try out the new melee controller system. As well as a few other features being added with this update that are listed below.

Melee Combat
The new melee combat system is now available. Players can now roam the testing environment and engage enemies in melee. The new combat stance toggle functionality has been implemented into the 2.0 controller that allows players to go in and out of the combat stance by pressing "TAB".

Currently player character is equipped with a test melee weapon and players don't need to worry about dying, once dead players will simply respawn, no penalties are being involved. This approach is selected to expedite the testing procedure.

Extended Settings
The options menu has been extended to allow players more control of the graphics and audio settings in game. Players can now control the quality settings and enable or disable post effects directly from the game. In addition, the audio volume controls have been implemented.

Additional extension of these settings will be added in the next update.

Additional information
During the course of the melee combat development, several game mechanics were involved, developed and implemented into the game. Such as the advanced spawn system. This system will spawn and monitor the enemies and is designed to manage the entities to maximize the performance. The system will work with all enemy types, including the infected enemies that will be added in the future updates. Additional configurations can be applied based on the player feedback.

What's next?
As a next step, I will be adding the gunplay controller functionality into the 2.0 gameplay. The new gunplay controller will be similar to the melee controller in nature and will have all of it's advanced features including smooth transition animations, fluent character aiming and more.

I will be posting a development update along with the demonstration video sometime next week.

The Withering 2.0.0.3 Update
The Withering - CrochaN

General Information
Hello everybody! In this update I am introducing the new combined character controller into the gameplay. The new functionality consists of all three previously separate controller states, unarmed, melee and gunplay. The new controller functionality now combines all three states into one.

In addition, the new controller now fully supports the coexistence of the 2.0 character / item stats system. This introduces an enormous verity to the gameplay. As well as opens the door to additional features that will further expand the gameplay elements for the players.

The demo scene has been adjusted and players can now engage in both melee and gunfight combat with enemies being re-spawned across the map.

Important Information
Currently there are several elements still being developed for the new controller. The ability to switch directly between Melee state and Gunplay state is one of them. Players are still able to do that with the current controller version, but it requires to switch the combat mode off and on again.

The controller functionality will be expanded in the next update and it will fully support the direct transition between these states. As well as a fully functioning HUD. The new HUD will reflect the character vital stats such as health, stamina and fatigue, as well as have a fully detailed weapon display functionality.

Melee combat stats
With this new update, melee combat is being expanded to support the weapon stats. Each melee weapon now has combat stats such as damage, critical hit chance and critical hit damage. In addition, the heavy strikes now deal higher damage to enemies.

The melee combat mechanic has been upgraded to fully support these stats or any stats that will be added down the road.

Firearms combat stats
In addition to the melee stats expansion, the gunplay mechanic has been upgraded as well. Several firearm weapons have been added to the game and players can try them out in the demo scene.

Each firearm now has the following stats that have been fully integrated in the gameplay mechanic:

# Damage
# Critical Hit Chance
# Critical Hit Damage Multiplier
# Accuracy
# Stability

The last two stats work together to introduce an additional weapon control mechanic into the gameplay. Accuracy is governing the precision of each shot. Each following shot will be slightly less accurate as the weapon kicks, and this is where Stability weapon stat will dictate how fast the accuracy will be regained. For example, firing a long burst with a fully automatic weapon will suffer accuracy penalty with each shot. But bursts with a short pause between them will allow the weapon to be stabilized and suffer less accuracy penalty. Stability is critical for both, automatic and semi automatic weapons.

Next Update Planned Features
In the next update I plan to have the new controller functionality to be fully implemented and finalized.

The new player HUD will be added.

The construction of the new playable environment will begin.

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update
The Withering - CrochaN

Hello everybody!

It's been a very busy week and I am very happy with the results! I am slightly ahead of the estimated schedule with the development and the end result is better than I have anticipated!

I would like to share a few things with you on what was achieved in the past couple of weeks as well the plans for the near future.

Environment and HUD
The player HUD development was completed. HUD now fully functioning with the new player stats system and weapon display.

The following screenshots were taken from the new game environment that will become a part of the Withering 2.0 city map.

Let's break it down a little bit. One of the major changes in 2.0 is the scale of the map. If we look at the buildings in the distance, they are over one thousand game units away from the character. Now to put it in perspective, the largest map in 1.x is currently Upper St.Claire section of the city. St.Claire is built on a 500x500 game units map. What we see on the screenshot above is twice the size of an entire St.Claire map.

Let's talk a little bit about performance and optimization. I was able to develop a more advanced level design approach that allows for the same amount of details to be implemented while costing less resources. This also allowed for a larger scale construction. In addition, new features were developed such as cloth behavior emulation is now controlled via shaders rather than physics engine, and as such will reduce the processing cost and increase an overall performance. New improvements were also implemented for particle systems and other gameplay elements.

My initial internal testing yielded a much better results in comparison to the 1.x build. This testing was done BEFORE the major optimizations are applied. I am expecting an even better results once the map is fully constructed and optimized.

Development Roadmap
In the light of the latest development and testing, I am now able to adequately estimate the development road map for the Withering 2.0 up until the merge into the main branch.

The Withering 2.0.0.4 Update
17 JULY   - CROCHAN

The Withering 2.0.0.4 update is now live!

General Information
Hello everybody! I will keep this announcement short and to the point. In this update I am introducing a section the new City map for players to explore as well as the latest version of the character controller.

Important Information
The purpose of this release is to primarily gather the feedback from the players in regards to the controller mechanics and the new map performance. The map has been optimized for this build, however, this is not a final optimization pass. Once the map has been fully constructed it will undergo additional optimizations. Also, I will expand the player options to allow more detailed graphic settings for players to adjust for different systems.

The city map construction is going very well and on schedule. The new environment is by far less demanding than in the previous 1.x version of the game, and the memory consumption has been optimized.

The city map will be expanded in the next update and new random events will become available in the city free roam.

Current build controller has been expanded to work with the new character stats system and the new HUD system. Currently there is only melee and primary weapons available to players. Secondary and Sidearm weapons will be added in the future updates.

Additional controller functionality will also be added and current features will be expanded down the road.

The Withering 2.0.0.5 Update
1 AUGUST   - CROCHAN

The Withering 2.0.0.5 update is now live!

General Information
Hello everybody! Another update for the 2.0 is here and we are going steady according to the schedule. New features are coming in and the map is being expanded with every update.

Random Events
With this update I am introducing the new events system that will manage the randomly generated events across the map. With this system in place I will be able to build new types of events and easily implement them into the game with future updates.

These events will randomly spawn across the environment and players will get a notification message when one of these events is nearby. Once you receive the notification, be on a lookout for a red signal flare smoke. There will be multiple types of events: random resources, infestations, rescue, boss fights and so on.

Each type of event will yield different loot. For example a resource cache event might hold medical supplies, military supplies or a large component cache. Other events will offer better gear drops, special components, etc.

City Map Expansion
The free roam City map has been expanded in this update and I estimate it is now about 45% of the final size. A large portion of the Skyway underpass is now available for exploration and scavenging.

What Comes Next
I am planning to release the next update by Aug 31 as it was scheduled. With that update I will be introducing the new infected enemies and gameplay elements such as infestation events. In addition, the update will bring the camp gameplay back into the beta with new functionality.

The Withering 2.0.0.10 Update
15 NOVEMBER   - CROCHAN

The Withering 2.0.0.10 update is now live!

General Information
Hello everybody! With this update I'm introducing some of the new feature that I have mentioned in my posts on the forum. The reason I'm releasing this update rapidly after the 2.0.0.9 is because it features several gameplay elements that I feel will greatly contribute to the features of the previous update.

Enemy Loot
Enemies now drop loot! The loot varies, depending what type of enemy players have taken down.

Item Database Expansion
A new item type is now available! Commodities item type will now be dropping from defeated enemies. These items can be sold to any vendor for good profit.

Crafting Recipes
Wood and Medicine resources can now be broken down into medicine consumable items and wooden components.

Melee Weapons
Rare and Epic melee weapons are now available from in world loot and Black Market vendor in the Camp.

HUD Update
The player HUD has been updated to display the Camp Fame in free roam.

Main Camp Expansion
I have begun work on the Docks building in main camp and players can notice that the resource donation is now available in the camp interface. This is a first step in introducing the new Docks building functionality. The Docks will allow players to manage all Factions based functionality in the camp, as well as travel to the HUB, and trade with different Faction vendors.

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update #5
22 DECEMBER, 2017   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

As I mentioned before, with camp management features in place I am now able to shift my work towards the character development and for the last week and a half I was doing a lot of ground work on expanding the player character systems, to support all of the new upcoming features and some changes that will be implemented over the next few updates.

I think I have said that before, but.. Somehow, it's a special feeling killing Z's with a shotty! :)

With the next update, that is scheduled for this weekend, I will be introducing the new secondary weapons into the gameplay. The secondary weapon slots will be dedicated to shotgun type weapons for close combat. This will include the new ammo, new ammo recipe and a whole range of weapon rarities for the shotguns. Currently two types of shotguns will be added to the arsenal, and will be available for purchase from vendors in the camp. Yes, I do plan to add more..

Additionally, the work that was done on the character systems will allow me to implement the rest of the gameplay elements such as hunger / thirst and their effects on the character for example.

Thank you!

The Withering Update 2.0.0.19 is now live!

The latests 2.0.0.19 update has been silently rolled out last night. This update is probably the most important update to be released, as it introduces an enormous amount of changes and improvements under the hood. It is mostly focused on the player character mechanics and the way they are being processed during runtime.

Important Information
With 2.0.0.19 update, the player character mechanics have been expanded and reworked to allow for a universal player character game components. What it means is that after this update, I will be able to fairly easily and quickly implement new playable characters without having to redesign an entire inventory and stats systems for each new character.

This was one of the most important steps in the development and now that it has been implemented, I will be focusing on preparing the build for the main branch replacement.

Important Information
With this update, players are being introduced to a few new members of the underground survivors. Each character has an independent progression in stats, equipment loadout, yet have the access to the shared camp resources and storage.

New Recipes
Additionally, new firearms crafting recipes are being introduced with this update. Players are now able to craft multiple firearms with different rarity grades.

Community Testing
I would like to thank everybody who is actively participating in the public beta testing for 2.x, and would like to encourage players to report any new issues if they are to be discovered that are specifically related to the new multi character system introduced with this update. Such as:

Inventory system issues
Data saving / loading

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update #6
2 MARCH   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

The weekend is quickly approaching and with it the main branch migration of the BETA build. In this announcement I will talk about this migration and what is going to happen to the 1.x legacy build. I will also briefly talk about the next development steps and focus, post migration.

BETA migration
The current BETA build residing in the public beta branch will be migrating to the main branch over this weekend. Players that currently opted to the default branch will be migrating to the 2.x build.

The 1.x legacy build will remain available for now, under a new legacy branch. To gain access to the legacy branch please follow the steps below:

1) In the Steam game library right click The Withering and select properties

2) In the properties window, switch to BETAS tab on top

3) Enter legacybranch in beta access code and click on Check Code

4) Select the Legacy branch from the drop down menu

Due to drastic differences in mechanics, the 2.x and 1.x builds are incompatible and the data will not be transfered.

Next Steps
Now that we have a solid multi character player controller and management systems, I will focus my attention on developing and expanding the playable map. There are several aspects that I would like to address, and as a first step I will be working on finilizing the city map.

Once the city map construction has been completed, I will look into expanding the gameplay to a legacy free roam open map. As I mentioned before, the goal is to transfer most, if not all legacy gameplay elements into the new 2.x version with the new mechanics in place.

The Withering 2.x Migration to Main Branch
The Withering - CrochaN

The Withering 2.x Migration to Main Branch just went live!

Hello everybody!

As it was previously announced, the new stable Withering 2.x build is replacing the legacy 1.x build in the main branch!

Players who are opted to the default main branch will be getting the new 2.x build and all following updates. For players who want to gain access to the legacy 1.x build can do so by opting to the legacy branch. To opt to a legacy branch please follow the steps below:

1) In the Steam game library right click The Withering and select properties

2) In the properties window, switch to BETAS tab on top

3) Enter legacybranch in beta access code and click on Check Code

4) Select the Legacy branch from the drop down menu

Due to drastic differences in mechanics, the 2.x and 1.x builds are incompatible and the data will not be transferred. Please note that by opting to a legacy branch, you will not be getting any new updates.

The Withering 2.x new build information

With the new 2.x build, players will now have access to a brand new character system, inventory management, fluent camp management and other new features. The 2.0 update is focused on all of the new features we are introducing with it, please keep in mind that this is a work in progress and some of the gameplay elements are not yet implemented with this release.

The Camp
The 2.0 introducing a brand new camp gameplay with deep and fluent management system that is no longer a separate entity. In 2.0 players will dynamically move between the Camp and the rest of the world, while sharing the Camp features amongst all of the characters.

The new Camp is a living entity, with vendors, quartermaster and survivors populating it. The entire system is managed from a single menu directly from the character interface, which allows players to transparently switch between characters in world and still have access to all of the camp features.

The new interface allows players to manage all of the camp buildings, survivors and missions. Upgrade different structures and add-ons to gain multiple bonuses.

All of the camp upgrades, add-ons and other types of improvements are now managed directly from the character control, through our new robust inventory and stats management system. These elements have a verity of bonuses and stats, rarities and more. There are many ways for players to receive these upgrades, and one them being crafting.

New Crafting System
Crafting! Yes, in 2.0 players will gain access to a new deep crafting system that is easily managed through the new character interface. The system is based on several types of crafting categories like Tools, Armor, Weapons, Gear with recipes available in each of these categories.

More Crafting
2.0 also introduces the extended crafting mechanic that will mostly be used for constructing Camp upgrades and Add-ons, combine scavenged items into resource bundles or breaking down other types of items. This system will require players to assemble the recipe by dropping the items in appropriate slots. Different combinations will yield different results.

Players will receive the recipes by different means, like completing a mission and getting a recipe as a reward, or simply by finding one while scavenging the world with their character.

NPCs
In 2.0 players will now have access to the new types of NPCs such as a camp vendor and a quartermaster. With our new character system players gain access to the trading system, each items now have value and can be sold or purchased from different vendors throughout the world.

Some of these vendors will have specialty items that players will need for more advanced recipes or a special item bonus.

Another type of NPC introduced in 2.0 is the quartermaster. The quartermaster manages players storage, which is a shared repository available to all player characters.

These NPCs can be found in different areas in the world and players will be able to access their storage by interacting with them, so the storage is no longer limited to only Camp gameplay.

Player Characters
The new character system in 2.0 allows player to fully customize the character stats through gear, equipment and other means. Characters now have multiple stats that are used through the gameplay for different purposes, like interacting with NPCs, scavenging, combat, etc..

One of the most important changes in 2.0's character management is that players are no longer limited to the four characters defined. Instead, players will be able to find new playable characters through out the gameplay, by using the radio communication from the camp, running missions, exploring the world, etc.

Each playable character will have a background story and unique looks. Once players add a new character to their roster, they can take switch between the characters at designated spots in the world or in their camp at will, and customize the character stats to their liking with different equipment sets. This allows players to have different types of characters for different situations in the game.

One of such examples would be to have a character with high charisma and persuasion stats to use on diplomacy missions. And have another character to do the fighting.

Exploring and Scavenging
As it was mentioned above, players will now be able to fluently transition between the camp and the world map with any of their characters. This is done directly from the game world, by interacting with entry / exit points.

These points will allow players to cross between maps, Camp, missions and other areas throughout the world with their active character.

Withering 2.0 introduces a brand new scavenging system that will take the experience to the next level!

Everything in the world now becomes a part of this scavenging system, and players will be able to interact with the in world objects. The system automatically highlights the objects that are available for scavenging.

Different objects will yield different loot types and categories, such as components, resources, equipment and etc.

Scavenged objects will randomly respawn through out the world.

Feedback and Bug Reporting
Please leave your feedback regarding your gameplay experience and ideas in the following thread:

The Withering 2.0.0.22 Update
The Withering - CrochaN

The Withering Update 2.0.0.22 is now live!

Hello everybody! This update addresses the issues that were reported by the community as well as adding new features to the gameplay.

Minimap
As it was requested by the community, I am introducing the new Minimap feature with this update. The Minimap is now available on players HUD and it will display all nearby points of interest such as loot, map transitions, events and etc.

The new Minimap interface can be zoomed in and out by using the buttons on the HUD, or Plus and Minus keys on the keyboard.

Fixes

Fixed: Vendor interface scrollbars not visible sometimes
Fixed: Possible crash when transitioning between areas
Fixed: Mission reward item would get lost sometimes
Fixed: Additional technical performance fixes applied

Adjusted: Vendor interface panel has been adjusted for better view
Adjusted: Trinkets now provide greater stat bonuses for radio events
(Applies to new trinkets)

The Wilderness
As I mentioned before, I am now focusing my development on expanding the playable map. Based on community feedback, the main feature that is currently lacking in 2.x version is the free roam open wilderness map, and that is exactly what I plan to bring next into the new version.

The screenshot above is showing current rural area that is a work in progress. The new area that will become available with future updates is 5 times larger in comparison to it's predecessor in 1.x version.

I will be focusing my work on development of this new area over the course of the next several updates, and will be posting the development updates on a weekly basis.

The Withering - Development Update #7
22 MARCH   - CROCHAN

Hello everybody!

I just wanted to share the latest development update for the new free roam wilderness map. Overall I am very happy with the progress and development is going well and steady.

For the last week I have been working on and testing several technical solutions for the gameplay on a new map, and I plan to have finished testing these mechanics and processing approach by the end of this week.

The main goal is to ensure a steady performance from several aspects. Rendering, CPU and memory consumption. Currently I am working on developing a solution that will allow for dynamic loading and unloading of the components and models. This mechanic will ensure that a minimum memory will be consumed during the free roam play.

In addition, the mechanic will ensure that no excessive physics processing will be done in run-time. This will significantly reduce the CPU and in some cases GPU processing requirement and increase performance.

As you can see from the new screenshots, the new free roam will have new locations for players to explore. These new locations will have event spawns, general loot and enemies. Most of the new locations will have buildings that players will be able to explore and loot, with detailed interiors.

This phase of the development requires extra effort and dedication on my end, and I will be aiming for releasing a new update with a playable new free roam part of the map as soon as all of the critical gameplay and technical mechanics are in place and ready for testing.

There are many already existing components involved in this process, such as camera configuration, visual effects, audio, etc. Additionally, while working on the new free roam I was able to fix several reported issues, the fixes will become a part of the next update that I will be announcing the release date for soon.

Thank you!

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update #8.5
4 APRIL   - CROCHAN

Hello again everybody!

As I was saying in my last announcement here:

https://steamcommunity.com/games/427950/announcements/detail/1675777608233720980

I wanted to show you the progress made, rather than just talking about it.

In the following screenshot you can see the smooth horizon transition that I was talking about. It was taken with maximum settings and a new maximum drawing distance.

This setting works well with the lowest drawing distance, more suitable for low end machines as well. You can see that happening on the next screenshot.

Additionally, if you look at the next screenshot you can see the new ground textures that I mentioned in my previous announcement and the amount of ground details that are now present on the new map.

If you look at the hillside on the right from where the character is standing, you can see how the new textures form a relief on the ground. This is being achieved by utilizing the shaders and new textures. Looking at the far hills, you can see that the amount of nature elements are almost three times more than the original screenshots I posted.

All that was achieved by utilizing a complex DirectX 11 technologies, and the great part about it is that it does not require DX11 at runtime, even if low end video cards will fallback to using DX9.

In this next screenshot you can see that enemies are being spawned at the location and the navigation system is working. The enemies will also dynamically load and unload with the location.

This last screenshot will display how players can see the locations from a far. You can see the buildings and the roads of this small town, however the rest of the details will gradually be loaded as players approach the location.

Some additional details were reworked, like skyboxes with better textures and more details.

Thank you, cheers!

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update #9
28 April - CrochaN

Hello everybody!

I would like to share the progress on the development of the new free roam wilderness map as well as talk about some of the features it will bring into the gameplay and a course of the development for the upcoming week.

Overall I am happy with the progress and internal performance testing is showing good results!

Over the last couple of weeks I was able to develop, design and build several location templates that will help with the construction process a lot and will also speed things up. Now, just to clarify what I mean by templates..

It does NOT mean that the locations will look the same, no. The templates I'm referring to are technical templates that allow me to easily create location layers. The locations will be different and I would like to show and talk about some of them.

In the screenshot below, you can see an example of an industrial type locations that will be available for exploration.

Here is another example of a rural location.

Players will often find abandoned cars and trucks on roads and highways.

And of course, gas stations and other service area locations.

Most of the locations will have one or more events with increased chance for higher grade loot.

I plan to continue working on constructing the free roam map for the next week and then start preparing the build for an update that will include a portion of the free roam wilderness map.

Thank you!

The Withering 2.0 - Development Update #10
The Withering - CrochaN

Hello everybody!

It's an end of another very busy week and I have good news to share! I will be releasing an update with the new free roam map by the end of next week and this update will include a much large section of the map that I originally estimated! The development is going very well and the construction is exceeding my expectations.

The new map that will become available will hold more than 20 locations to explore, including 2 towns. The playable area of the map will be span across half the full size of the final release of this free roam. So, half of the map will be fully playable by the end of next week.

Lots of different locations, abandoned cars, industrial areas, military, gas stations and of course towns. As I mentioned before, these locations will have a chance for an event and all of them will also have a chance to spawn an equipment crate with higher grade equipment that can be found on the city map. so, exploration will be rewarded.

I'll be posting a detailed breakdown at the moment of the release and will work hard to try and implement a map interface for this upcoming update.

Thank you.

The Withering 2.0.0.25 Update
The Withering - CrochaN

The Withering Update 2.0.0.25 is now live!

Hello everybody!
I'm very excited to introduce with this update the new wilderness free roam exploration gameplay mode, that I was talking about for quite some time now! The new map is now available and can be accessed from the camp, in HUB vendors area.

Important Information
Players are strongly encouraged to provide feedback on the new map and gameplay. Please keep in mind that this is still a work in progress and some parts of the map and gameplay might be a bit rough on the edges.

The landscape has not yet been fine tuned and players might see some broken / rough terrain in several places. These elements will be addressed once the map is complete and I will be able to do the final fine tuning run across all terrain.

The draw distance settings have been adjusted for the new expansion. Please configure them accordingly for your systems.

I would very much appreciate the feedback on performance and memory consumption while playing on a new map. Please provide your findings in this post.

The Wilderness
The new map consists of a very large rural area, with multiple locations for players to explore and loot. Most of the locations have one or more active events, and equipment crates.

Currently about 50% of the map has been constructed and available with this update. Additionally, a map "M" by default, has been added for the new exploration expansion.

This update also addresses multiple issues that were reported by the community or discovered during internal testing.

What's Next?
I will keep working intensively on the exploration map construction, and with the next update I plan to have it completed 100% and available. I will be posting a development update with details and estimated release date soon.
