Burden of Command is an emotionally authentic World War II tactical leadership RPG. You’re the Captain of a company of the fabled Cottonbalers, leading your men on and off historical battlefields from Morocco to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.

The Faces of Command Wed, 2 October 2019
Unit Portraits are Now in Burden of Command
In Burden of Command, you won't simply be moving pieces around a map. You're going to be leading men...Men with hopes, dreams, and fears...Men who hope to make it home alive.
So we're adding their pictures to the tactical map as reminder.
When you select a unit, now you'll look into the eyes of the men you're about to order into harm's way.
Lead them well, Captain...
Their lives depend on it.

How Far Can You Push Your Men?
https://youtu.be/MoZv12XIvX8
Knowing your men is crucial for any leader. Knowing exactly how far you can push them is much harder.
Burden of Command is modeling this challenge by giving you an estimate of your men's likelihood to follow certain dangerous orders, such as assaulting an enemy position.
You don't have the luxury of exact percentages in war. You only have the look in your men's eyes. Will they charge with you, or will you advance only to find yourself alone under enemy fire?
You have a gut feeling they will follow, but you can never be sure.
This is the Burden of Command.

Exploring the Enemy & Fog of War
Greetings, Captain.
Last week, we discussed how fog of war can apply to your own units.
This week we look at how it can shroud information about enemy units.
https://youtu.be/a76_VAdYAyA
Where is the enemy?
How many of them are there?
What is their morale status?
These are just a few questions you will be faced with in the field.
Prepare yourself, Captain. War is hell.

What are the goodies? Wallpapers! We have posted wallpapers of Lieutenant Thompson in two resolutions (1920x1080 for PC and 320x480 for mobile). Get them here! https://steamcommunity.com/app/887490/images/?p=1&browsefilter=mostrecent
And now a message from your commanding officer:
Greetings, Captain.
A good leader knows his men.
Here's a summary from the personnel file of one of your platoon leaders. You can see an image of him above. Study both well.
Name: Eddie Thompson Rank: 2nd Lieutenant Age: 22 Home State: Vermont
Lieutenant Thompson is an idealist. Few doubted the evils of war, but the fresh-faced Lt Thompson always sought out the good in men. The American spirit is more than mom and apple pie. Lt. Thompson is proof of that.
In the coming weeks, I'll give you files and photos of more of your men. Get to know them as best you can, Captain.
Their lives are in your hands.
That is all, Captain. Now see to your men.

We are putting out an open call to test the tactical engine for BoC.
Candidates will be chosen in the following phases:
Phase 1. Prior Game or Software Development. These folks know how the sausage is made and are comfortable operating in early developmental stages of a game engine.
Phase 2. Prior Play Testing Experience. These seasoned souls are familiar with industry standards. They will do all they can to 'break' our precious game, making it more stable ad robust in the process.
Phase 3. Anyone Else with an Interest in Burden of Command. This is our opportunity to gain a wider perspective. People from myriad backgrounds will give us their thoughts and opinions to make the finished product the best it can be.
We hope to have a testing pool made up people of all ages and interests, regardless of historical or military knowledge. We're looking for input from as many perspectives as possible so that this game experience can be accessible and meaningful to everyone from casual gamers to combat veterans.
JOIN UP HERE! https://burdenofcommand.com/contact
If you've already signed up, you're good to go. We've got you on our list and you will receive equal consideration based on the requirements above.
See You on the High Ground! The BoC Team

We've been a bit slow in releasing news about game-related updates lately. The good news is that big things were happening behind the scenes.
You may recall a post a while back where we announced the addition of a new play tester named Chaim Krause.
Well, it turns out that Chaim is far more than a play tester. He has been instrumental in our upgrade from Python 2 to Python 3, which took A LOT of work. As you can see above, that's just a part of what Chaim has been up to.
As a result of his hard workd and dedication, Chaim has been promoted to Devops Engineer!
Thank you, Chaim! We couldn't have done it without you.

Their Past, Your Future: The Big Guns
https://youtu.be/rGbyz8-u_NA
The landing craft are loaded. The night is dark. The sea is rough.
Your thoughts bounce back and forth from praying your Higgins Boat doesn't capsize to trying to keep your last meal from coming back up.
Thankfully, this should still be a relatively easy landing. The boys up at intel section aren't expecting any resistance on the shore.
You spot a long, bright, horizontal strip ahead in the darkness.
"It's the beach!" someone yells.
Some men allow themselves a smile at the thought of getting of this tin can.
Fear loosens it's grip on your gut. You're almost there.
Then the shooting starts...

The Cottonbalers and You: Week 5 Sun, 2 February 2020
Their Past, Your Future: On the Beach
https://youtu.be/Uxnk4q2zcUw
You made it ashore in one piece, but there's no time for congratulations.
A successful landing only means you're that much closer to the people who want to kill you.
You pat yourself down, checking your gear out of the habits gained from months of intensive training back in the States.
Frankly, you're surprised you made it this far.
The men start to mill around in the pre-dawn gloom, unsure what to do next.
They look to you. "Whada we do now, Sir?"
The muffled report of heavy machine gun fire echoes from further inland. It gives you focus.
You respond, "We do what we came here to do."
You set your boots toward your objective and march toward the sound of the guns.
"Follow me."

The Cottonbalers and You: Part 6 Sun, 9 February 2020
Their Past, Your Future: First Contact
https://youtu.be/QAuXXIIY_wg
You lead your men off the beach, thankful to feel solid earth beneath your boots. Whatever waits ahead, at least you're off that infernal Higgins Boat.
As the sun crests the horizon, you spot movement ahead. Your training kicks in again as you and your men hit the dirt.
You reach into your map case and retrieve a set of Army-issued field binoculars. Your eyes strain to make out the figures ahead in the gathering light.
"Infantry." You tell your radio operator. "Some cavalry, too."
You lower the field glasses as fear grips your stomach again.
Dying doesn't scare you as much as the idea of failing your men. Are you up to the task?
The men look to you. You can feel their nervous eyes upon you like a hundred burning spotlights.
It's time to find out what you're made of.
You grab the radio's handset and key the mic. "This is Alpha Six. All Alpha elements prepare to attack."

The Cottonbalers and You: Part 7 Sun, 16 February 2020
Their Past, Your Future: Fedala
https://youtu.be/zyf2MAueSQ8
You enter the town of Fedala at the head of Able Company.
The streets are quiet. There isn't a French soldier in sight. It seems the enemy has no stomach for this fight.
The only signs of life are the occasional glimpses of locals peeking through the windows above and the few denizens walking the narrow, dusty lanes. They seem unfazed by your presence.
Children appear. A few of your men smile at them. That's all it takes.
The youths are soon buzzing around the column like bees in a field of clover, bounding from soldier to soldier, tugging at pant legs and field jackets. The men hand them candy bars, C-rations, and anything other trinkets they have handy.
The scene reminds you of the stories the old timers told about orphans in France begging American Dough Boys for food during the Great War.
Your heart goes out to these poor kids, but you also know this is putting them and your men in danger.
This wasn't in the training manuals.
You have to do something. But what?
Your blood runs cold as you suddenly realize just how unprepared you are for this and whatever else lies ahead.

If you've learned one thing in your brief war experience, it's to expect the unexpected.
Your newest mission offers more of the same.
"A hotel?" asks a sergeant.
Your men a surprised as you are.
A private jokes, "Will there be room service?" It brings a laugh from the men. You even allow yourself a grin.
"At ease, Patterson." You regain your bearing. This is still a war...Even if your objective is a luxury resort.
"Listen up, knuckleheads!" First Sergeant Grant barks. That wipes the smiles from the men's faces.
Grant is a good man. You're thankful to have him. It's good to know he always has your back.
"Go ahead, Sir." Grant nods to you.
"Thank you, First Sergeant." You clear your throat. "As I said, our objective is the Hotel Miramar. Our mission is to capture some very important guests..."

Their Past, Your Future: Fedala Mission Planning
https://youtu.be/BhtWSpl1DdQ
In the finale of our miniseries about the North Africa landings in November of 1942, you are faced with one of your most difficult decisions yet...
You have your mission. The men are ready.
You examine your map...
Your task is not to take the resort itself, but to capture its high-profile German guests. That means you'll have to move quick and avoid alerting your targets. Otherwise, they are sure to escape and disappear into the desert.
There are three options. None are perfect, but you must choose one and commit all you have to it. Now you see what your instructors meant when they told you that the worst decision is indecision.
Life or death. Victory or defeat. Success or failure...
All are in your hands, Captain--And your hands alone.
This is the Burden of Command.

And as an added bonus, Sgt. Grant's character will be voiced by veteran actor Shane Taylor, who portrayed Doc Roe in Band of Brothers! https://store.steampowered.com/newshub/app/887490/view/1589131508785040938

VE Day Through a Soldier's Eyes Fri, 8 May 2020
A Letter Home
Seventy-Five years ago today, Sergeant Robert Mathis had just heard that the War in Europe was over. So had the rest of the world.
I'm trying to catch up on some of my writing tonight, so don't bawl me out for writing such a short letter. It's been such a long time since I've wrote to anyone, I guess you all have been worried about me.
Well, as you know Sis, the war in Europe is over. I for one am very happy. I still don't know anything about coming home though. I can sweat it out pretty good now that I don't have to live in a foxhole.
I'll close for now, but I'll be writing again soon. I'm sending you a picture of me in this letter. Tell Bill to be ready for that celebration I've been waiting for when I come home.
True From Your Bub, Cleve
P.S. Tell Bill if I have to count on the points system to get me home, I won't even have enough to get to Paris. CM"
Sergeant Mathis was an artilleryman in the 8th Infantry Division. He served in every campaign from Normandy the end of the War. He was also my grandfather. I'm very proud to be his grandson.
Happy VE Day Everyone. Wishing Peace and Prosperity to all.

The end of the War in Europe is celebrated on May 8th in the West (known as VE Day) and on May 9th by the Eastern Allies (known as Victory Day).
So we would like to wish a happy Victory Day to our Eastern friends.
Whichever day we observe, it meant that the war in Europe was finally over. After six years of unbelievable suffering, peace was finally at hand. Though it would be another three months of hell before hostilities ended in the Pacific.
As always, we wish you all happiness, health, prosperity, and peace.

Forging Ahead Tue, 7 July 2020
Putting the Parts into Place
Our Burden of Command team has moved to an exciting new phase of internal testing, and we wanted to provide a brief update on our progress.
For a while now we've been developing and testing the Burden of Command tactical engine and artificial intelligence, and the fiction and narrative of the Seventh Infantry Regiment have been growing alongside. Sound effects, music, historical images, and other important features are also coming together. Now it's time to start joining the pieces and integrating the story of the Cottonbalers into the tactical engine.
After testing through several hypothetical scenarios with nameless units, we're now meeting Capt. Lamb, Lt. Wilson, Sgt. Grant, and the others for the first time.
Reading their stories and learning their personalities adds a whole new layer to the decisions you have to make. Knowing what happened recently to one particular platoon, do you really want to order them to assault that fortified position? There's another platoon in range, and its leader has been wanting to get into the action lately.
Burden of Command's newest senior advisor, Colonel John Antal, is a soldier, military historian, author, and leadership expert. He served 30 years as an Army officer and was historical advisor and executive producer for the Brothers in Arms game series. He draws on his own deep leadership experience plus years of teaching others in contexts like the Normandy battlefields.
He is also the author of the newly reprinted interactive classic Infantry Combat: The Rifle Platoon, as well as 15 other books and hundreds of articles on military technology, history, and leadership. You can learn more about John at www.american-leadership.com.

Happy V-J Day! Sat, 15 August 2020
Celebrating Peace, 75 Years Ago Today
Hi Again Everyone!
Sat, 15 August 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Imperial Japan, which effectively ended World War II.
As many of you know, we draw great inspiration from our own family experiences in this conflict. In that spirit, we will share a few more of our personal heroes...
Meet Thomas P. Hughes and Agatha Chipley (later Hughes). They are the parents of our Project Lead, Luke Hughes.
Agatha served as a nurse during the war.
Tom served in the Pacific Theater as Lt Commander of the USS Arthur Middleton, then went on to earn a PhD in history and invent an entire field of study, the history of technology. Development of Systems Theory was a key element of his work.
He went on to become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1990.
You can watch a great lecture he delivered at MIT on his work here (https://infinitehistory.mit.edu/video/thomas-p-hughes-creating-open-systems-thomas-edison-arpanetinternet%E2%80%9D-mit-sdm-distinguished)
Another team member, Craig Elliott, also remembers his father, Ed Elliott, on V-J Day. After Ed graduated from Kress High School in West Texas in 1944, he joined the Navy and served as a radioman. He served on the USS Pine Island and other seaplane tenders, one of which survived a kamikaze attack. Ed earned two Bronze Stars and served through 1946. This photo shows him shipping out in 1944, and on the back is handwritten "The Kid from Kress."
Isaac served on the minesweeper, USS Token. His was the second ship to enter Tokyo Harbor.
After the war, he became a barber and settled down in Tennessee. He went on to become one of the best grandfathers ever.
That's all for now.
You can see more about our commitment to honoring history and those who lived it here (https://burdenofcommand.com/our-respect-for-you-is-a-problem-in-an-historical-rpg)
We'll be back soon with more game related news and goodies.
I'll see you on the high ground,
Rob Community Lead

To give you a better look at the men you'll be leading, we put together this depiction of the Cottonbalers (7th Rgt, 3rd Div) "Nickle" Company during World War II. It is fictional but historically structured in a carefully historical campaign, and advised closely by official Cottonbalers historian J. McManus.

Could you command a modern tank platoon? Thu, 17 September 2020
Try your hand at leading a tank platoon this classic reprint of Armor Attacks: The Tank Platoon - An Interactive Exercise in Small-Unit Tactics and Leadership, by John Antal, who is also:
• Executive Director for the Brothers in Arms games • 30 Years commander in US Army • Senior Advisor, Burden of Command
The reprint comes with a recommendation from Burden of Command Community Lead R.A. Mathis!
-- Captain - Lt Wilson - vet. Too old a vet? - Lt Thompson - eager. Too eager? - Lt Stern - an ax to grind... - Lt Dearborn - Thinks he knows best. Does he?
Good luck Cpt!

Tanks are smarter now. They keep better-armored front to enemy when retreating. Rather than weak rear.
Tanks ... such different beasts then poor GIs. Too bad you won't get many, infantry captain

And, yes:
1. We hope to animate tracks, etc., eventually 2. The explosion is odd since the tank didn't die 3. The tank should have presented its front, not its flank

Your decision on "illegal" and maybe "dangerous" brewing, Captain? Visit our official Burden of Command Twitter page and vote for your order.
1. No brewing 2. "Medicinal" brewing facilities allowed 3. Spread word of poisoning 4. It's dangerous but I'll allow it
(we had to omit the "safe Army beer" choice because Twitter only provides four poll choices)
We'll find the most popular order, then reveal what happens with that choice!

Update on our progress Sat, 9 October 2021
Attention! Since you've been asking where things stand we thought it was a good time for a quick update. We don't have a release date yet, but we are making great progress and have tested most of our planned scenarios.
In the scenarios we've tested so far, the Cottonbalers' opponents were on the defensive; we did those first because the AI was easier to write. We're working on the offensive AI now, and when it's ready (soon!) we will have seven remaining scenarios to test.
Then all those scenarios will be integrated into a true narrative campaign, and we'll need to add and playtest the RPG mechanics. And of course there will be fine tuning, balance, and polish.
It's all starting to come together, so remember to check back all the time because we have regular updates here on Steam, and on our Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook pages.

Early Campaign Playtesting Started! 10 Sept 2022
After we previously tested all Cottonbalers' scenarios as standalone battles, our campaign code is now working well enough that playtesters have begun the first "mini" (five-scenario) campaign: Morocco 1942.
The Cottonbalers were inexperienced and pretty ill-equipped going into Morocco, so we'll see how well the officers lead them in their first Burden of Command.
Here's a snippet from the "Hotel Miramar" scenario:
