OK, so my game name evolved early this summer to just Combat Operations because it was wisely suggested I focus on all fronts at the same time. Previously it was COO because of the focus on Overlord, but I quickly realized the name convention was too close to Command Ops. The topic was broached at the eve of the campaign, and I tabled most of the conversation to concentrate on the task at hand. Now is a good time to bring it back up. I am not opposed to a complete name change, but I am admittedly partial to Combat Operations. Therefore I will throw out CO: World at War (COWW)...illustrates operational combat, WWII. If I ever expanded to WWI then CO: the Great War (COGW). Cold War, COCW, etc. Thoughts?
Here is a running record of the ideas in this thread:

Hi choppinlt
You might consider getting away from the use of "CO" as it may cause confusion with other existing software.
Just a thought.

Besides being too similar to Command Ops, personally I think that Combat Operations is too bland. I'm a big fan of brainstorming--throwing lots of ideas out there to see if someone else can improve upon them.
I'm not crazy about any of the titles suggested below, but hopefully one of them might spark a better idea by someone. Personally I'm always a sucker for wargames with some kind of German title ("Drang nach Osten" anyone?):

Exactly why I throw it out for discussion! By all means, brain storm away! As a native english speaker, I agree that the use of German adds a more exotic feel. I am open to suggestions. FWIW, we had some internal discussion about the name CO, and we had similar thoughts with being bland. But we all got occupied doing our own things that no one came up with anything special.

I thought of it because it puts across what the sim does in a clear and simple way.

OK, any more thoughts? I have added a few more over the last few days. And we have 1 vote for OBC!

I am partial to CO: World at War. Keeps homage to your original idea but makes it unique and creates a way of showing how any series of games might work.
Other than that Operational Command is OK
A suggestion I have would be Battle Command.
I don't like the variants that make reference to individuals such as those with Commander or Staff because I think the name should be reflective of what is going on rather than who is doing it. I also do not like the ones with German names in it. Sorry, all that means is I will never pronounce the game name properly and probably never spell it correctly either. :)

Yeah there are several I like, especially COWW and OBC...How about Theater of Operations? I will throw that up on the list plus your suggestions Ian.

Theater of operations is good. Might still be good to tack on something WWII related though.

Theater of Operations is OK. One of the problems with naming is that the campaign intends to cover so many theaters. Maybe you could call the engine Theater of Operations, with DLCs like Theater of Operations: Normandy and Theater of Operations: Belorussia '44.
I guess we're not in a huge hurry to pick a name though, it sounds like we've got some time.

The name is very important. Take your time.

Agreed, no reason to rush it at this point. So I threw up another suggestion of CONOPS. It stands for Concept of Operations and is very applicable to the operational level. With either of my last 2 suggestions we can also tack on World at War, or something like that. The beauty of either name is that it is not tied to any theater in particular. It also depends on the context of the word theater because ETO for the western Allies included NW Europe, Italy, and North Africa.
The DLC will be more focused on particular operations/areas...which was the plan all along. Just so you know the plan for DLC (at least shortly after release) will not be as large as the Normandy campaign...It would be more like Cobra, or Goodwood, etc...and in some cases may have to be in slightly smaller chunks. As we go along we may be able to provide some larger DLC. The size of the DLC can be priced accordingly.
